All this fresh seafood for $25?? Unheard of. Also, the sushi chef was the cutest old man. Will be coming back.

Awesome place. Very small, simply ran, humble—but delicious food and great service. Thankful we were able to stop in.

Had a great solo meal on a quiet Tuesday night. Ordered an Omakase and a toro nigiri - both were delicious. It’s relatively casual, evidenced by the reasonable prices and bento trays for serving. The space is small but cozy and inviting. The sensei works behind the counter steady and serene. This place deserves more customers!

The best sushi I ever had in the Unite States. I really enjoy the sushi there and the food there is super fresh. Besides, the miso soup and the tea are also wonderful.

Great traditional sushi restaurant which is quite large for a restaurant with a single chef. Be prepared for a wait (on a Tuesday at 8pm, it was about 45 minutes for food to be served), but expect some fair prices and solid sushi in exchange. The menu is quite simple (basic nigiri/sashimi/maki options with a small special rolls section). I chose the assorted sushi set with a side of the uni sushi. The uni was good (not fishy at all), but as compared to my expectations, the boiled shrimp stood out to me the most, as it's not usually a piece I particularly enjoy but the texture of the shrimp here was nice and chewy. Overall, however, all of the fish was high quality and tasty. My only complaint was that they used a fair bit more rice on the nigiri than I would have liked, but that is easily fixed. One more aside, this place has a large counter and a few tables for 2. The restaurant is a great option for solo or couples dining but probably not great for groups larger than that.

This is my secret sushi spot. Fresh fish, generous cuts. Amazing value: mango tuna rolls for $7! In 2018!? The interior looks like it hasn't been updated for 20 years, but that's part of the charm. Great service, but there's only the sushi chef and his partner running the whole place so don't expect speed if it's busy.

M
Melissa Esparza

Amazing, fresh, and authentic! We absolutely loved this small sushi place. The owner was attentive and nice. Would definitely come back!

L

I love this place! I came to San Francisco on vacation and looked up sushi and this is where I landed. The sushi was fresh, service was friendly. Came with my sister and we had time to talk and enjoy our food. Try the Dragon roll and the dynamite roll. Omakase was a suggestion from the table next to us. Looked very beautiful next time I will have to try it (leave it to the chef). I would definitely recommend this place. They have been open 26 years now I know why. They are perfection.

Quality sushi at much more reasonable prices. A one-man show in a small but comforting place. Enjoyed the takeout last time and decided to reserve a table. Toro available! A couple of the mango rolls offer a nice kick. Will be back.

Wayo is our favorite sushi spot in the city. Besides having great sushi, it’s extremely unique. There are only a few tables, it’s reservation only and the chef doubles as the server and host. The prices are extremely fair especially for the quality of fish we’ve had there.

I’d give six stars if I could! This place makes you feel like you’re in a Japanese nook. Came here and it was closed not realizing how limited the hours were and called in a reservation. This guy is amazing. A one man show. This is the definition of intimate

Need to go back. Arrived and saw the sign on door said closed. Waved through the glass at worker inside, he came and opened the door and welcomed us in. Regardless of the fact it said “reservations only” on the door, because there was only one other party eating, I think he was okay with us dining. The entire operation was one man whose service and food was simple and satisfying. No frills. For the price is it unbeatable. Atmosphere feels like you found a small sushi spot in a corner of Tokyo. Really great experience.

I came to wayo 10 years ago when I first came to SF. The California rolls with real crab and tender rice showcase the skill of the chef. I will always come back for the authentic sushi here. It tastes incredibly fresh and high quality

Best quality sushi I have had in a long time. You have to call in to reserve a table but it’s well worth it. This quaint restaurant offers a personal experience at unbelievable prices for San Francisco. We will be back soon. Super happy we came here for dinner !

One of the best sushi that Ive eaten and the prices are very afordable. Small place with a great ambiance. You need reservation to eat there

N

Please take cash for tip if you are paying with card! 3 people and the bill was a total of 64$. The sushi was amazing, the salmon nigiri just melted in my mouth. All the rolls are very well priced and the quality of the sushi was incredible! The waitress was absolutely the kindest human to walk on the earth. It’s a hole in the wall but well kept! Will definitely be back!

C

Excellent food for very reasonable prices. There's just the couple running the place, so only one person preparing sushi. That might mean a wait if there are many other customers there before you. But it is worth the wait. Tremendous sushi and appetizers. Make sure you check the specials of the day, my favorite was the special salmon and mango roll. So good! I can't understand why anyone would give this restaurant less than five stars. I've been to many sushi places, including many in Japan, and this is up there with the best IMO. Sure they don't have super expensive (usually overpriced) fancy tuna and other high priced fish, but what they offer are good fish for good prices. What's not to love!?

M
Michael Mircea Rosenberg

I had my first date with my wife there in 1991 and continued eating there until 1994. Went back in 2004 and the place was amazing still. Best sushi ever. Sent friends there in jibe 2011 and they were very impressed with the quality and prices. The owner is the chef and Japan town is around the corner. Freshest sushi.

Very delicious sushi in an unassuming and cozy spot. Very empty when we went on a Thursday night and it was just the one man who was making all the sushi himself. Great price for the quality. Seriously such a good local-feeling place.

Excellent but you need to reserve your seat well in advance. Toro tuna was the best sushi I have had outside of Japan. Service is excellent. Drink menu is anemic but you wont care after the tuna and the mango spicy tuna roll which is amazing.

Hidden gem. I wish I could gate keep it but have to share it in case it may go out of business. So the restaurant experience is quite unique. It's open only 2 hours a day (6-8 pm). It requires a reservation but don't be too worried. I called just one hour before the opening and got accepted. Slow jazz music. Old paintings. Kind Japanese man my father's age is taking the order. Curious strangers are looking at us through the window but it doesn't disturb the magical atmosphere of peace; it only adds to it. I've been to many restaurants in the U.S. But this was probably the first time it felt home

The best, freshest sushi I’ve ever had. Intimate dining setting with limited seats, so you need to call in advance. The rolls are so high quality and shockingly affordable. I’ve had much worse rolls for double the price at other restaurants. Such an amazing spot that I’ll miss when I leave SF.

Best sushis I've had in San Francisco! The sushi chef was also kind enough to allow us to stay even if we had no reservation as he was very busy serving other customers. Also I would rate as A1 the cleanliness of the place, and the care the sushi chef takes when he handles the food, making sure the fish stay refrigerated at all time. I highly recommend this sushi bar!

This was the best sushi I’ve had in my life! Went with three friends and we all got the $28 omakase. The quality of fish is excellent and there is a lot of care that goes into the sushi. The toro nigiri was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. As others have mentioned, there is only one sushi chef who does everything, so you may have to wait a little for your food but it is well worth it, and you do have to make a reservation for dinner. This has always been my favorite sushi spot in the whole city which i can come any time. Casual and friendly. Fish are great and the rice is what to come for, always freshly made. Even the fake crabs feel “real” here. Plus point for a cute and clean toilet in the neighborhood.

Wow. This place impressed us. Fantastic sushi that doesn't break the bank. Had to order take out due to the shutdown and the sushi was fresh, well packaged, and just delicious. Ordered the omakase and added a roll and some other items. Seems like a family establishment too which we always love supporting. Will make this a staple of ours. Yum!

Truly a MasterClass in Sushi. As a comparison point I've been to some high end sushi stops in Japan and there are not many that come close to the expertise, quality, and class that is shown off. When we attended Wayo Sushi, there was only one employee who was our chef and waiter. I am still beyond impressed with the speed and attentiveness he showed while there were other tables to attend to. It's a small quiet shop, reservations are required but it makes a perfect date night.

An absolute gem! This small, intimate sushi spot is a must-visit for any sushi lover. The quality of the fish is outstanding, and the owner’s passion for his craft truly shines through in every bite. The sushi is fresh, beautifully prepared, and surprisingly affordable for the quality you get. Because it’s a cozy spot with limited seating, reservations are a must—but that only adds to the special, exclusive feel of the experience. This is the place if you’re looking for top-tier sushi in a warm, welcoming setting. Highly recommend! 🍣✨

Tiny 1-2 person place that is mostly takeout (al though they have a few seats for dinner service), with really good sushi at reasonable prices (and healthy portions). Everyone in our party agreed that their California rolls—juicy, with real crab meat—were the best we'd ever had. The mango rolls are also a standout, but pretty much everything was great. Also convenient for those eating gluten-free (both the California rolls and miso soup are GF, both of which are often made with gluten).

I have a new favorite sushi place in San Francisco. There is not much to this place. No fancy decor, overly quirky rolls, or long sake lists. The fish is really good and a great price. My wife and I got stuffed with two drinks each for $60. The only down side to this place is that there is a very small staff. One waitress and one sushi chef run the place. It took us over an hour from when we went in to get our fish. Luckily they gave us booze and apps while we waited for the sushi. -1 star for slow service.

Interesting experience here. The owner/chef was very friendly. Seems to be an one-man operation with very limited seating.. so be sure to make a reservation. The food was good and priced very appropriately. Loved how omakase also came with maki, miso soup, and salad. We spent a little more to get a few nigiris on the side. Highly recommend the uni.

There’s no walk-in dinings. You have to call ahead to make reservations OR to pick up orders only. So don’t expect to be able to walk in during its hours because the door will be closed.

It’s a very average food. I was so hungry, walked 30m to get there, but rolls are nothing special. I tried spicy salmon, cream cheese with salmon and sake nigiri. Idk what exactly didn’t work for me, but it tasted like the ones I make at home. A lot of rice, tasteless. Average

A

Says it’s open until 8, when you get there the door is locked with a sign that says reservations required. Upon calling and going to their website, there is no response and additionally no link to make a reservation. Poor experience.
