Best food and atmosphere in the state of California. A must for all people and families.
Always a pleasure coming here. The atmosphere is awesome and the peanuts before the meal is a welcoming sight. The two salads they bring, along with the bread...amazing. That can be the entire meal right there. I always order the filet mignon and lobster tail...its downright killer! The wait can be a little long, but whats a little wait for a great meal and time.
Favorites: Old Fashioned, Steak, Potato Skins, Cheese Bread. Atmosphere sends you to snow country.
A really cool place for the atmosphere. Clearman's has a long history in the area, and this is essentially a local landmark. It's pure roadside kitsch with a lot of neat architectural details. As far as I can tell, this restaurant opened in the 1960s but has roots going back to the 1940s. It's known for its steaks and prime rib.
Kept driving by, curious, finally went in. Step in and be transported to an American lodge, intimately lit with stained glass ceiling lamps and loaded with wall to wall details that keep you entertained. One of the rare themed restaurants left that goes all out. Real paintings, real taxidermy, real peanut shells in the floor! Attention to detail, a great environment for families. Good food, good portions and good prices as well.
Very pricey, but the food is extraordinary, as is the service and the intimate ambiance. Don't even get me started on the cheese bread, it should be in a whole new food group of it's own. So much food, I couldn't even finish half my dinner. (Combination platter) Potato, 3 huge scallops, a giant piece of fried chicken and steak chunk's with a side of rice.
This the best themed steak house! There’s great ambiance there! The salads, garlic bread, steaks, everything is delicious! The staff is friendly and helpful. We have been coming here since I was a child. The only thing I would change would be to use real candles at the tables.
Haven't been here in years. Took some friends and they enjoyed it. 😉 I kept remembering the good ol' days and felt a little blue. But my friends cheered me up. It was sad that the servers didn't sing Happy Birthday for patrons anymore 😢. We were celebrating 3 birthdays. They did get orange sherbet.
Food was good. I ordered the Porterhouse Steak. Which was cooked perfectly. The Baked potato was good. I recommend the cheese butter, but on the side. Salad and cabbage was good, especially their Blue cheese dressing. Clam Chowder is also good. The Cheese toast was good, but a little too greasy for my liking. And our Waitress was great, very helpful and even let us sample certain things.
Wonderful meal! Plus it was so much fun tossing the peanut shells at my kids uh I mean on the floor ;-)
Always a fun place to go. Great hunting lodge ambience. Food is delicious and a lot of it. Make sure not to fill up on the salads and cheese bread before the entree comes, no matter how good they are! It's not an in inexpensive place to go, but I feel it's worth the money. Surf n turf dishes are the specialty.
Log cabin vibes with peanut shells on the floor and giant salads. The cheese bread is dangerously good. Plenty of parking in the big lot. Portions are old-school huge, so split if you’re not starving. It’s kitschy and fun for groups. Service is cheerful and quick
Delicious, plain and simple. Michael was our server and his service was exemplary. The dimly lit atmosphere was a delightful example of an era that seems to be disappearing like the payphone and cigarette vending machines. Offering indoor and outdoor seating, this restaurant was running like a well oiled machine. We were greeted cordially, our order taken promptly, and the food was ready in no time at all. (We did order our steaks rare, obviously well done would take longer) Their cheese toast, and salads served with the entrees are RIDICULOUSLY DELICIOUS! Theres nothing else like it, honestly. I recommend this place.
Great food and service. Very consistent for many years!
This place is a treat for us, because the portions are huge! The service is always friendly, no complaints. The outside looks like a cabin in the snow, and the indoor atmosphere is dark, wilderness theme. They do have sports playing on large TV screens on the bar side of the restaurant. The crunch on the floor is from wood shavings and peanut shells, so don't be alarmed. Great food and many choices.
It was a Friday night and we were starving after driving across town during rush hour. Listen, when you visit North Woods Inn, you know what you’re getting yourself into. Bring your stretchy pants and be prepared to stuff yourself. You can review the menu all you want, but what you should be coming here for is a medium rare steak, grilled scallops, and lobster tail. The restaurant was bustling and after that drive I didn’t feel like waiting for a seat before ordering a libation so I started off by quickly ordering a tall boy from Ashley at the bar, who did an excellent job of managing multiple parties sitting in the bar area. Without even looking at the menu, we ordered our usual, steak, scallops, and lobster tail (duh). Within moments, out came the piping hot cheese bread wrapped in foil, and our personal favorite part, the cabbage and dinner salads. What you do is you mix 1/2 of the cabbage salad with 1/2 of the dinner salad and go to town. Occasionally dip the cheese bread into the salad or use it as a vessel by which you make a cheese bread/ salad flat bread, and you have yourself an exceptional first course. We had just enough salad to momentarily satisfy our appetite that way when the main course arrived we’d be ready to polish that plate off. A few minutes later, our main courses arrived. The steak was perfectly medium rare (as usual) and the grilled scallops had a wonderful charred, Smokey flavor. The lobster tail was bigger than my fist and the mushroom stuffing was a perfect compliment to the cheese potato and rice. Now let’s talk about how amazing this cheese potato is. When you mix the cheesy goodness together with the potato you get cheesy mashed potato goodness that perfectly marries itself with the steak and lobster. By the time we reached the end of our meals we needed a to go box and a wheelchair out of there. The service was amazing as usual. Considering we were in a large group, which the restaurant expertly handles, our meals arrived in a timely manner and were expertly prepared. I’m salivating thinking about our return visit.
Grade A (90): My dad used to take us to this place when we were kids because we could throw peanut shells on the floor without consequences 🤣. You can still do that. The steak here is ok, not a steak house quality of course but not bad. The salads are wonderful, the green lettuce salad with the ranch dressing and the red or purple cabbage with the vinegar, you can mix and get a delicious unique salad then you can't get at most places. The cheese toast that comes with the food is also good, most places have taken that out of their menus these days.
My wife and I enjoying coming to the Clearnan's North Woods Inn in San Gabriel for delicious meals they serve there including their world know for their steaks that many people come to the Clearman's North Woods Inn. Their meats is high standard quality meats they use that's why we come. We enjoy the red cabbage salad it's our favorite it including their salads everything is made fresh daily including their cheesy bread that so good.
Visited with two of my friends for dinner. T got the steak medium with shrimp which he said was so good. D got the seafood plate that had grilled shrimp, fried scallops, and fried cod which he said was really good but was too much food. He really filled up on the salad and cheesy bread. I got the rock lobster tail which was good and tasty with mushrooms lining the exoskeleton. It was all pretty good but I thought the cheese butter thing they put on the baked potato was weird. I might just not be used to consuming so much butter. Next time I would get it without butter. The host didn't seem too friendly but our server was great! She and her assistant made sure our cups were full and that we had a great experience. This place is so cute that I just walked around looking at the taxidermy and modern art inspired paintings reminiscent of Edouard Manet and other artists of that time. I also hugged one of the pine trees outside because I felt it wanted me to. Look forward to my next visit.
The food was delicious. The beer was a great size and the server was very nice. It was a far drive for me but worth it!
Fantastic dining experience! Built in 1958 this building was moved log by log in 1966 when the freeway was built. The ambience is wonderful with a turn of the century Yukon hunting lodge motif, complete with real log construction, stained glass, period antiques and of course the faux snow and icicles on the roof. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, the waitstaff are wonderful and the food is just amazing with huge portions. All in all this restaurant makes for a charming and wonderful evening out.
The steaks are always cooked perfectly and the cuts are the best. My wife loves this place for the salad and cheese bread alone which is always the perfect appetizer. Seriously, don't bother with the appetizers because the salad and cheese bread come with dinner and they are amazing. I don't typically order lobster because I'm cheap, but it did not disappoint. Huge portion, perfectly cooked, and very delicious. I barely had room to eat two bites of my steak before taking it home with me. This place is popular and gets very loud on weekends so don't expect a quiet atmosphere. Although the restaurant has a lovely ambiance. Servers are very friendly and helpful.
We made sure to make a reservation ahead of time. And i'm so happy that we did! There was a huge line because it's always so busy here during the holidays and the most we waited was about twenty minutes. Our server was so nice and attentive the whole time! We got two sirloin burgers, and we added the endless salad and bread. Our kids got the chicken strip kids' meals and they take one meal and split it into two at no extra charge.
Northwoods Inn (San Gabriel) is our go-to place for special occasions. Anthony, our waiter, was attentive and friendly. The steak was cooked perfectly, the baked potato with whipped butter is huge and so good, and the bread and salads are amazing. We tried the cod dinner tonight and it was fabulous! The fish was tender and flaky and cooked to perfection!
I was there yesterday after the track with my daughter. My cousin and his wife crowded inside our server,Nessa working six tables was in it and with. Smile food service excellent.great job mija you did an awesome job
Always a fave especially during the holidays! Love the cheese bread and salad! I usually get grilled scallops BFF loves the lobster with special dressing inside the lobster shell. Hubs loves the steak sandwich. All entrees come with massive baked potatoes, rice pilaf. I get the mushroom gravy on the side with cheese butter. You can always just get cheese bread and salad if you're not that hungry! They also have fun holiday cocktails!
I have been coming here for 40+ years. I have never had a bad meal here. The atmosphere is top notch. Now I can enjoy it with my kids and it's even better! They love it more than I do. Bar is always tip top. Servers always nice.
Best Atmosphere of any restaurant, ever. Not up for debate. Lol I can't say the food is 5/5, but I can't say its not, cause I've been eating at NWI for 4 decades now... and I can't rate food that I have such an attachment to, out of mere nostalgia. So, please don't eat here... I don't like having to wait to be seated. Haha
This place can get busy at times, so a reservation may be helpful. Reservations need to be made online though, no phone in reservations accepted. Walking up to the restaurant you start getting the feeling like you’re in the mountains! Once inside, you’re totally immersed. The service was good. Our server was attentive and friendly. The food was also good, good exactly as ordered. The bread and the baked potato are a must try! There’s a few locations scattered throughout SoCal which is nice. I’d go back again 👍
This restaurant (along with other branches) has one of the best vibes and environment to dine: serene, dim, and romantic! The food is delicious because they are cooled to your preferences. Dinner dishes have unlimited cheese bread, cabbage and lettuce salads. The waiter gentleman is very attentive, as he checked on us multiple times for potential add ons and refills. The prices are on the medium-high range, but I think they are somewhat reasonable for the aforementioned reasons. Please keep it up!
We get this to go every year during the holidays and it is always consistently delicious! The decorations making eating at the restaurant a festive experience. It's pricey, to be sure, but the portions are big and delicious, and worth the price. Allow ample time if eating in as the wait is often long, especially during the holidays, but again, worth it.
This is the beat kept secret ever! If you’re from SoCal this is one restaurant we all grew up with. A must go for the food. Over sized platters and delicious! Atmosphere is low light feel free to use your cell phone to read the menu. Music is always at the right volume and easy to watch the games on several areas in the bar. Be sure to wear stretchy pants you wont leave hungry!
My first time here. My guy and I really enjoyed the food. Everything was met my expectations. Tony was our server, he was nice and had a really great service. I got New york and chili mango margaritas. My guy got full rack of rib which didn't have on the menu but again Tony recommends us....it was so bomb. I would give it 10/10 💓 We would definitely be backkkk

Too tired/busy rn to go into details, but let's just say the food, service, and ambiance is 10/10. This is a classic LA spot. Go visit if you haven't already.
Yummy, love the salads and cheese toast. I make a meal out of that \nMy husband loves the steak and Lobster

Great food. My friend and I shared a meal. Soo much food. atmosphere makes you forget what you are doing and where you are.
Skewered beef and vodka Martini. Of course cheese bread with all you can eat. Cabbage and blue cheese salads. Was good.
I always trip out on sort of "fancy" places like this. So much hype for such simplicity. It is not bad, but it isn't great. Anyone can make this stuff at home, unless you're more about the sea food. I think people just like being able to throw peanut shells on the floor of a large dimly lit room near a taxidermy bear. Or, they come only so they can say they've been here. I guess it's "the experience" that matters to some people. The servers hustled with our massive group and did a great job. They even had to deal with an unreasonable person within the group who didn't even pay for the meal, but had no problem complaining when there was nothing to complain about. The one server who got the brunt of it mostly kept her cool. The demands were unreasonable and she was working a table of over 22 people and other tables and sweating bullets. As a person who has worked food service, kudos 👏 to her, because I would have lost it.
Visiting Clearman’s is a tradition for many people in Southern California. It is one of the easiest places to go when you have a group. They have a good selection, though not a lot of veggie options. Service is always good. Food is good—portions are always generous. The atmosphere is fun. Easy parking. Full bar. They do have ramps for accessibility and the rooms are spacious.
Relaxing atmosphere, comfy place to eat and be happy. Peanuts to eat and throw anywhere, so cool. Place can make you forget about the world outside due to the unique rustic interior. Love it. A little pricey but worth it. Excellent for groups of 4 or more. Lots of parking which is free. I grew up with these classic American restaurants, awww lets keep them going.
North Woods Inn has been around for many, many decades! I believe the San Gabriel location has been around since the 1960s. I went there in the 1970s- 1980s, 90s. I haven't been to North Woods in many years but went there for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The AC was fantastic and we were nice and cool and comfortable with temperatures outside in the mid 90s. It's very dark inside so it takes a little bit for the eyes to adjust but it's pretty much the same inside with sawdust on the floor. The menu has changed and of course prices have gone up. I ordered the brisket sandwich with rice pilaf, if you want fries, you add $1. It comes with a small salad where you can choose red cabbage or green salad or half half. I opted for half half. It was good but does not compare in taste and quality to the salad and cheese bread of yesteryear served back in the 1970s-80s 90s sadly. Maybe I'm being nostalgic of the fond memories back in the day. Lol. I used to go to the Clearmans "boat" as well that used to be in the same parking lot and they had good food as well but sadly was knocked down to make way for whatever is there now. The brisket sandwich I ordered today was okay/good but for $16.95, I might want to eat elsewhere since there are so many good restaurants in San Gabriel Valley with so many food choices. However, I'm happy that North Woods Inn is still around and have many fond memories of this restaurant and perhaps I will go back and try the dinner menu.
Great decor, peanut shells on the floor, amazing exterior, and delicious food (even the side salads and cheese bread). The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because my porterhouse arrived medium, when I requested medium rare. Everyone else's medium rare was perfect, though. Oh, well! Next time, I hope.
I enjoyed my visit here today. Exceptional ambiance. Great service. Old school everything, including the clientele. Filet was small but delicious and tender.
Clearman's is famous for large meal portions, I had the baby back ribs which were delicious and my son had a Lumberjack steak which he said was okay. Their salads and Texas bread are delicious. We were a lil' disappointed in the children's menu; there was really no healthy kids dinner selections, too many carbs and no veggies. We ended up paying separately for adult size side dishes to feed the kids.
Consistently good steak. However my loyalty is overall with the bake potato with cheese butter, cheesy toast, and the 2 salads...sooo fatty goooodddd. Tried lobster and very impressed that it was moist and had stuffing at the bottom! Also good blue lemon martini. Hardly needed any butter at all. Gets packed so make a reservation or go early!! Love the ambience of cozy wood cabin, feels so welcoming every time
The place was wonderful as was the serving staff. Our group tried the DineLA special with a mix of us getting steak with shrimp and the others getting the filet mignon. The beef dishes were perfection but a member of my group said the seafood was hard and had a burnt smell/taste to it. The salad was also not to their liking . I however got the beef soup and enjoyed it. Desserts were also delicious like the chocolate cake and the key lime pie. Accessibility was good and the bathrooms were clean, would return for the beef dishes and ambiance.
I had not been here for at least 30+ years. The place looks basically the same. I think the only addition are the large screen TVs in the bar area. A fun place to visit at least once every 10 years. Family friendly, plenty of parking, the food was good, the price a bit on the high side, and the service was not too bad, considering how busy they were. bartenders however we’re very slow. Great place to bring visiting relatives and friends from out of the area, as this is a very unique restaurant that has a lot of interesting history behind it, making it a must see and experience event. Bon appétit! 😎🇵🇷💪🏼
I grew up coming here for every single celebration my family had. I have wonderful memories here, eating with loved ones who are no longer with us. I moved out of state and I wanted a little nostalgia so I came back to visit. So much has changed. The bread, while always extremely delicious, it's now extremely limited. You used to get as much bread as you wanted and they would always bring you an extra basket to take home. Now, only 2 pieces per meal. The salads are no longer in their iconic wooden bowls. My brother always used to get the chef Salad but that's no longer on the menu. I ordered red cabbage salad which used to also be "free flowing" but now comes in a small plastic brown bowl. Our server was actually really terrible. He had an attitude. We were a HUGE inconvenience to him with our questions. After he dropped off the food, we didn't see him again until we got our to-go boxes. Glad I came back but sadly a lot of the nostalgia is gone. Not sure I'll make the extra trip to come back again.
It is such a cute place here, it is very much a theme and a vibe that goes a long way. The food is actually pretty good and the portions are generous! Paula Deen would approve of the butter usage lol the baked potato on each of our plates is colossal sized! Steaks were tender and cooked to requested temperature! Also love that they give you peanut snacks and you just casually throw the shells on the floor!
Food was delicious. I didn't care much for the scallops, I think it was the breading type, cornmeal I think. The bread and salads were great, my baked potato was huge. Our server was awesome, we didn't have to ask for iced tea refills, she checked on us often.

Went here for the Dine La event. The prime rib they served was absolutelt delicious and a very good size. The server was good extremely friendly and patient. It was almost a little too loud. We made a reservation and arrived there on time but still had a wait time.
I’m entirely not sure how this place is so busy & popular. My experience was mediocre at most. The restaurant has nice atmosphere but that’s about it. Food was average. Their vegetables tasted like they come straight from frozen vege bags & rice pilaf was very much like instant rice packet. Won’t be coming back.
Service was great. Our waitress was very friendly and patient with our large group. Just one heads-up, it is very noisy here and difficult to have conversations. If you want to visit with your fellow diners, you may want to look for someplace more quiet.
We were excited to come here as we have been wondering for a while what was inside of that snow-covered building. We had reservations on Valentine's Day and only waited about 5 minutes to be seated. The ambiance was nice and everything was clean. Love the peanuts on the floor vibe. Our sever was just ok and seemed to forget about us toward the end. The food was very mediocre, but expensive. We both ordered shrimp and it was well-cooked, but bland. I also had steamed veggies that looked like they came straight from frozen and were also not seasoned at all. Not sure if this is normal? It was pretty crowded, so I guess people enjoy the food, but there was literally no flavor, not even salt. Cheese bread and cabbage salad carried the whole meal. Oh and by the way, the regular salad is just iceberg lettuce and dressing, not much of a salad. Will probably not come back.
The service is excellent, but I feel that the food could be improved to better match the price. I tend to prioritize quality over quantity when dining out.
I've been coming here for decades. It's been at least 8 years since my last visit. Sadly, items have more than doubled since then. Quality is the same. Service was fine. Note that menu on the internet is far outdated. Do not rely on it. Be prepared to pay double. Which we did. Still...love the cheese bread!
Price 3/5 Taste 2/5 Aesthetic/atmosphere: 4/5 Menu: 3/5 Customer service 4/5 Service was great and the aesthetics has a classic feeling. You get a very old school kind of vibe and it's fairly refreshing for a restaurant. Unfortunately, the steak I got eat very bland and nothing to write home about. We ordered a appetizer platter and it alright for the price as well. The cheesy garlic bread that came with the meal was by far the mvp of the whole dinner.
The atmosphere is a big part of the attraction to Clearman's. The snow cover roof of the log cabin is very identifiable and an attention getter. The interior does take you away to a log cabin in the woods somewhere hidden in the mountains. The quality of the food was underwhelming for me and my party. I enjoyed the salad and garlic bread but was disappointed by the bland rice pilaf and my medium rare steak did not have a great texture. The cod lacked flavor as well. I did finish the steak because I did not order a large portion. The prices seem to have the atmosphere already priced-in. I don't see myself coming back for dinner. For less than the price of my steak alone I could have made a steaks and sides for a family of four and everyone would have finished their food with pleasure rather than leave portions at the restaurant. It's too bad because I really wanted to enjoy the experience with my family.
Great portion sizes. Love the interior design. Friendly staff. However, the food was a hit or miss. Free peanuts are good, not salted tho but that's based on your personal preference. Ordered wings for apps and those were good. I ordered a ribeye which was tender and full of flavor. My bf ordered a new york strip and it was so tough and had no flavor at all. It was just bland. We both got it medium. The salads, pilaf and baked potato that comes with the steak were good tho.
I wish I could give a better review, as the food was certainly fine, nothing hugely special, but fine, and albeit pricey, generous portions. The reason I will never return is due to the service upfront. We arrived on time for our 6:15 reservation, as we had another commitment at 8:30. We did not get seated until 7:30, and the hostess was not very helpful or understanding. Since we waited 1 hour - 15 minutes to be seated, we decided to go to the bar for a drink, and it took 25 minutes there to get service. Once we finally sat, and rushed our meal, our server Amber was the one saving grace. Her friendly, prompt and professional manner helped to ease our frustration over the most unprofessional and incompetent first hour and a half of our visit there. Sadly, I CANNOT recommend.

If you care about your seating and covid, don't go here. We drove an hour because of their outside seating arrangement and they would not sit us outside because they said it was too warm outside. We waited a half an hour additional so that we could at least eat in the main dining room where it wasn't crowded as it was in the bar. We specifically let the hostess know. We sat down in the dining room, not crowded, no one there yet, it was a little before 4 p.m.. The whole place was empty in the dining room. We just got served our food when they sat a foursome directly behind us. They have signs in their restaurants to stay 6 feet apart. You couldn't even move your chair without hitting the next person behind you. I spoke to the seating manager I believe his name was Audrik. He just basically said he was sorry that he wasn't given the message and didn't do anything. But still they continued to seat people directly together instead of spacing them out . I expect a little more when I pay over $100 for a dinner to at least spread the seating arrangement out when there is no crowd! Other tables also looked uncomfortable and looked around like; why are we all stuffed into 4 tables when the rest of the restaurant is empty? Totally incompetent, they should be working more closely right now on this issue. We have been a customer for over 40 years. The only reason why I gave them two stars is because our waitress Jessica was outstanding and the food was good as normal. We won't be back until covid is over.
Love the atmosphere and Halloween decorations. The broiled chicken was juicy and tender, the cheese butter and baked potato was good. The cheesy bread was under broiled and there was not enough spread on it. The bleu cheese dressing was a bit watery. I guess their trying to save money. It makes me sad since I usually love the dressing and bread.
Went with a large group. Wasn't impressed with the food. Mahi mahi was overcooked. Sides were low-quality, not the clean eating that I prefer. Just not my thing. But had a great time with the group I was with.
I've been on the throne for the last two days, the brisket sandwich made me sick. I like the place, the ambience a any other dish I ordered before; but apparently I unfortunately ordered something that made me feel like I had a monster in my stomach. Dang, finally I starting to see things getting hard. Hahaha! Well, is the truth. 🤢 🍖 😅
Clearman's had been one of our favorite restaurants over the past 10 years or so. On our last visit, though, we were quite disappointed. I made a reservation for 6:15. (6 PM was not an option as it was greyed out on every day.) We arrived at 5:45 in case we could be seated early, however, we were not even seated on time. We weren't able sit down at all (in the lobby or at our dining table) until 6:50 PM, which was painful for some of our party with injuries. Then, the food and service were lacking. A few of us ordered steaks, but we all commented that we thought that they were extremely and unusually bland/ un-flavorful. Lastly, there was not enough salad or bread for everyone, though we certainly paid for each person to have them. It was such a letdown since we've often enjoyed this restaurant.
Been living across the street for some time now, finally decided to try it. We walked in, peanuts all over the floor. I wore sandals, bad idea. We waited to be seated the waiter just looked at us. …

Don’t be fooled by the nice exterior decor I should of known better when even the peanuts were stale Super salty entrees that comes with the meal from the inedible cheese bread to super salty…
Today I had the crispy chicken sandwich and it was awful. The coating on the chicken was soggy and made the bread wet. It was so bad I left the other half. I mentioned it to the waitress and she said she would let the manager know. But it was like it didn't matter. And even after we left a good tip. After waisting $17 for that sandwich. And we have never had a problem till today. This is Our family to go restaurant since we were younger. I will be back for my birthday 🎂 next month . But today my dinning experience was bad.
