Hunan Impression is my all-time favorite restaurant in the South Bay. The food is spicy, flavorful, and just as good as Ping’s Bistro in Fremont — but much closer! Every dish is bold and delicious, true to Hunan style. The only downside is the price per dish is a bit high, which makes it more of an occasional treat than an everyday go-to. Still, absolutely worth it for the quality and taste.

If you are looking for spicy hunan style food, you get it in here! I ordered sichuan type spicy chicken, and she did ask me if I would prefer mild or medium - I said just regular is fine. It definitely knocked my socks off and I had to order rice to ease the spicyness. But I did love the dish. The spring beans are classic yummy! They close at 2 pm for lunch. So better check the opening hours. The portion sizes are family size.

Great service, dishes came very quickly, server was responsive when we asked for something. Although Hunan cuisine is known for being very spicy, they definitely toned the spice level down to suit the locals. We asked for less spicy which was perfect for our likings. People eating at our table were from Taiwan, Wuhan, 潮汕 for references. Every dish was absolutely delicious and makes you crave more. The fried intestines were my favorite, not even a tiny bit of off flavor, they cleaned it to perfection.

This is a more modernized Chinese restaurant with nice tables and chairs. We order food using their web app. Right after the form is submitted, staff comes to confirm and ask if there’s any customization. Since this is Hunan style, expect the food to be very spicy. Some of the dishes can be adjusted to be none or less spicy. Be sure to let the staff know your preference. Foods are delicious. Crisp Lamb Chops with Chili & Peanuts is the best. They are vegetarian options, but not as many as I would like.

Definitely the best Chinese restaurant in the Bay area! Especially if you like Hunan cuisine or spicy foods. Highly recommended 🙌🏻 The taste was very authentic. The portion sizes were big, but you can wrap it up. Ordering was efficient because you can get to ordered on iPad. And the staff were friendly. Would like to revisit to try other dishes. 🚨Cons: 1. The parking area is unsafe, cars windows usually got smashed. 2. A little bit expensive (but definitely worth it!)

I’ve been coming to Hunan Impression for over 8 years and the service is consistently excellent. I’m vegetarian and they have plenty of options. My go-tos are the eggplant, the lotus root, and the cabbage (I order it without pork). The cabbage in particularly outstanding. I also tried the popular flaming fish in chili oil dish with soft tofu instead of fish (this is not on the menu but I insisted). I could tell the dish would've tasted much better with fish. They include an 18% service charge and ask that guests don’t tip beyond that, which I really appreciate. The staff and overall service are always warm and attentive, with people regularly checking in

Hunan Impression in Sunnyvale is one of the top Hunan restaurants in the Bay Area. The menu is very similar to Ping’s Bistro in Fremont. We ordered the Pork Ribs with Salted Egg Yolk, Sautéed Beef with Wild Rice Bamboo Shoots, and Stir-fried Cured Beef with Garlic Sprouts (Leeks). Overall, the dishes were well prepared and nicely presented. If there is room for improvement, one of the spare ribs was very tough to chew, and I wished the portion of cured beef were more generous. There is also a mandatory 18% service fee, which is not something I personally prefer.

This is our go-to place when we’re craving for Mala food. The food never disappoints! We hope the menu can offer more variety for people or young children who don’t eat spicy food.

A high quality and authentic Hunan place. Excellent mei Cai kou rou. Everything was fresh, well cooked, well presented. I recommend ordering the meat dishes that are spicy, as these are definitely this place’s specialty. The veggie dishes were good but not special.

Have been dining here for 10+ years. Dish quality is dropping. The dishes are super salty. It covers original taste of food and also indicates materials are not fresh. 10/8/2025 - The restaurant called me in the following day and thanked my feedback. It is a positive attitude!
