Aye there last night and really enjoyed it. Servings are large and it's great value. You order then sit and wait for it to be made, like a bistro, and it's a family friendly place. Lots of beers. We had the Texan ribs and the selection platter - both were great.
Small chain BBQ. I still love it. If you like American BBQ, you'll like it. Everything is great on menu. Great place for burgers. Great ribs and other traditional BBQ dishes. Great sides. Good for take out or dine in. Fast for dinning in since there's no waiters and you pick up your own food. A few TVs on the wall. Big portions of food. A few BBQ sauces with condiments.
Great BBQ, super-friendly service, expansive menu, and their prices won't break your piggy bank. Lean brisket was just that, very flavorful and moist - even without sauce. Armadillo Willy's has two sauces - original and spicy. Their original BBQ sauce is well-balanced and not too sweet. Meat on ribs was very tender, corn muffins were yummy (if a bit too crumbly for my taste), but Armadillo Willy's honey butter made up for that. Great chain overall.
I order catering from Armadillo Willy's and have never had an issue. Delicious ribs and sides. Kids like the Mac, I like the corn
It is back! It used to be our favorite restaurant but we stop going during the pandemic, the food was bad and not fresh. Couple days ago just give it one more chance and the original delicious BBQ and burger is back! Wow, so proud of you and we will continue to visit. Way to go Armadillo Willy's BBQ!
The food was great, the first time in this place. I had to order some side dishes to take home, because of how good they were. I would definitely come back to this place and bring family and friends here.
This review is for the catering provided by Armadillo Willy's. We have hired Armadillo Willy's to provide a dinner during a family/friend's gathering, and the experience has been very positive. In the time leading up to the event, the communication with the catering team has been very prompt and professional. On the day of the event, the driver have provided updates to his whereabouts (since the venue is difficult to find due to a long, tortuous road), and upon arrival, he sets up the food and presented it beautifully. As for the food itself, it is delicious, as always, and as a native Texan who craves her BBQ, the food certainly satisfies. Overall, I would definitely hire Armadillo Willy's Catering again in the future if the need arises; in the meantime, I will continue to frequent their restaurants. Highly recommend!!!
Consistently good tasting and cooked perfect food
Had my favorite Sourdough Double Cheeder Cheese with Grilled Onions Patty Melt. I don't order this often. It was a special treat kind of day. For my side, I ordered the Sweet Potato Fries. Best meal combo, patty melt, SP fries, with cold Iced tea. 🍔, 🍟, and 🥤. 🙂
Just love this place. The ribs are all right, but everything else's really good. Especially the brisket fire hamburgers too.
Great BBQ joint. The brisket was perfect and they asked what I wanted and made sure it was right. The Cajun tots! Aside from being a touch dry they were some of the best tots I have had. How do top great food? Better service? From the first interaction to the last Imanol was simply the best host. I'll definitely be back.
I go up to the San Mateo/Redwood City area once a month and I like to try different places and types of food. I was a bit hesitant to eat at Armadillo Willy's for fear it was just another BBQ joint. The food was excellent! I had the brisket sandwich and Cajun fries. The brisket was insanely tender and it was flavorful too. I will be back next month, try something different.... I am looking forward to it!
Great place for quality BBQ flavor. Beef Brisket sliced or chopped, Pork ribs, Smoked Turkey breast & sausages too. Famous spicy coleslaw with peanuts. Everything is good and carefully prepared. Try it, you will like it.
My favorite spot for BBQ for 2 reasons: It’s walking distance to the office, and tater tots! Ok, the ribs are good too! I usually get the Baby Back and Tri Tip combo. And always get the Tater Tots. I like the fact that they have a salad and veggies as sides. For those days when I eat healthy. Make that day. The ribs are a little smaller than desired, but they make up for it with a wonderful BBQ sauce. By the day, I’m surprised I ate the whole thing, and I sit back fat and happy! All this compliments a great BBQ beer list. Go get some
Ordered the trinity combo with extra brisket for dinner tonight. Service was friendly and the wait for takeout was super quick, less than 10mins. Meat was done perfectly, and we loved the corner bread with butter spread, but the cajun fries was a bit overly salty. Overall it was great, and we will def come back again.
You know, I wasn't expecting much. Just another BBQ chain serving poor quality to just adequate food. I was, very happily, wrong. The food was excellent. The brisket was nice and tender, the chicken was moist and very tasty, and man. The chicken wings were standout delicious. Service was prompt, food was served hot and was of high quality, the atmosphere was welcoming and the facilities were clean and well maintained. Excellent place. Highly recommended it.
The food here is absolutely delicious. I had the Texas ribs, brisket and jalapeño cheddar sausage. Everything cooked to perfection. I'll be back soon!
So they used to have one in Dublin and unfortunately they’re not open anymore so I’ve been going to the one in San Mateo and Anna and Angel and all the crew. There are the team they’re all great great food great atmosphere great attitude.
One of the best places to get BBQ! We were introduced here by a good friend and this will be our go to spot! We all got the build your own which is $34. You can choose 3 meats and 2 sides. I got the Andouille sausage, baby back ribs and the brisket. The sausages was good but probably won’t get it again, didn’t think it was anything special. The ribs though, that was amazing. I wasn’t a huge fan of the brisket, thought it was a little to dry buttt it did taste really good with their bbq sauce. For the sides I got their pinto beans and Cesar salad. The beans was soo tasty and flavorful, loved eating a bite of the ribs and then a spoonful of beans! Cesar salad helped cleanse my palate. I had leftovers for the next day and it tasted just as great.
Excellent texas BBQ options and beer selection. Brisket, ribs and chicken options.
I had the Texas BBQ Ribs - Small Plate. The ribs were excellent! Not mushy, not covered in liquid smoke, just good ribs with a nice dry rub, and sauce you could add if you wanted. Not a fancy place but you can relax and get messy with your ribs. It’s a big place, so watch out that your little kids don’t wander off or out one of several doors.
Excellent ribs. Extremely meaty. Sides of beans and fries are good. Good onion rings. The house BBQ sauce is absolutely perfect.
Armadillo Willy's recently remodeled. They added new Pepsi art inside the restaurant. It was a bit sad to see them mostly empty at around 7pm. Last time I was here, they got rid of the flavored mineral waters. This time, the ginger ale, flavored lemonades, flavored ice teas and etc are now gone. For to-go, I got my favorite, brisket and ribs family pack $79. The meat was a bit dry. Luckily, there's plenty of BBQ sauce included. The garlic fries were soggy by the time I got them home. Next time, I won't order them for to-go. The food is still good. 2025 update. This is the last remaining Armadillo Willy's location out of four. Tonight's meal was an El Jefe sandwich (pulled pork, brisket, sausage and slaw) $19.50. This was OK. Their family packs are much better. They recently got rid of their flavored mineral water machine. Service was fine for a order at the cashier type of restaurant. Original review: The restaurant was empty at 6pm on a Wednesday night. My food came out quick. We got the Texas BBQ ribs w/potato salad and garlic fries $28 + side of brisket $5.40 and baby back ribs w/cajun fries and house salad $30.50 + side of brisket $5.40. The Texas ribs were ok. Slightly burnt and smoky. It didn't fall off the bone but still retained some moisture. The baby back ribs were a little bit better with the meat almost falling off the bone. The highlight for us were the garlic fries! So good. I should have gotten rid of the other sides and went with all garlic fries. As for the brisket, it was OK and needed BBQ sauce. We should have asked for more fattier pieces. Service is as expected for a self serve, pay at the cashier first restaurant.
Not a bad BBQ place. The Texas ribs are great, the brisket has a really nice smoked flavor, the sausage is tasty, and the pulled pork is pleasant. The coleslaw is a bit different so beware. The peach cobbler is absolutely disgusting.
Armadillo Willy’s BBQ catered our 50-year high school reunion at the Mountain View Community Center, and they did a fantastic job from start to finish! The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the setup was done on time. The staff member who delivered and set up the buffet was friendly, professional, and made sure everything was perfect. Our event started at 6, and dinner was scheduled for 7. He arrived right on time and did a great job of unobtrusively getting things set up while staying out of the way as our Social Hour commenced. When our originally contracted location in Sunnyvale closed earlier this year, our order was seamlessly transferred to the San Mateo location, ensuring we could keep our plans on track. Early on, we were treated to a pre-event tasting so we could choose our side dishes. Catering Manager Jennifer was fantastic—quick to respond, patient with my many questions, and even had a few suggestions. I loved that she provided a “key” indicating which items had food-sensitivity ingredients, so we could label dishes that were gluten-free, vegetarian, and so on. Everything was beautifully packaged and thoughtfully supplied: compostable plates and utensils, plastic tablecloths, reusable plastic serving spoons and tongs, plenty of BBQ sauce, and even wet-wipes! We were able to get standalone heating stands for a small fee, which worked great for our buffet. Excellent food, great people, and truly outstanding service—I can’t recommend them highly enough! It's been a while since I have Southern food. Not usually a "go to" place for me, but am down to try food like this. This restaurant happens to be inspired by other southern foods from Texas. Looks like that they decided to bring the food here to Bay Area with its several locations. I have to say. The place is very nice and reminds me the times that I go to Fuddruckers, which is closed at Union City. It replicates the theme of southern places in the US and the business has been running for over 40 years. Good thing that it survived the pandemic. They seem to even play southern music too. The food here is really good. I decided to additionally try the Texas toast. Really tastes different than normal ones. The chicken thighs are good with appropriate seasonings especially the fries. Also like how the fountain machines are set up especially when they have like special flavors you can add onto your drinks like Vanilla and Cherry. This restaurant gives you an opportunity to try foods that are mostly inspired by Texan food. Gives you a taste of how the food tastes like from the south.
The food was pretty good, service okay. It was close to closing, but the staff wasn't telling people when they were out of things (kitchen was waiting on substitutions that never came, backing up orders). I LOVED their cornbread muffins though. The pulled pork was a little rare for my taste, but good flavor.
They were out of the tater tots that my kids love. But the tri tip was delicious- its always good there. They were also out of the mac and cheese- nothing we order but I know so many do. Staff is super nice and always leave happy. Just make sure you have our favorite sides.
Bench seat at the shorter booth closest to the parking lot has large gap in padding, like a sunken 6" by 8" hole and next to that is hard wood. No labels on BBQ sauce so can't tell which is 'spicy' or 'regular'. Brisket and all meats I've ever tried here have been EXCELLENT.
I got there around lunch time, wasn't busy at all. Small portions for the price, in my opinion. Lots of side choices, which is nice. Let's just talk about this corn bread muffin for a minute, it was very good. Comes with a cinnamon butter which I was hesitant to try but I'm glad I did. The butter is amazing with the cornbread. I highly recommend trying it 👌 Lots of seating options: high table, low ones, with chairs and booths. Window seating. It's a self service establishment, the soda station is Pepsi with sobe, ice tea options. BBQ is kept hot to temperature as well, which was nice to see. Healthy menu options.
Good BBQ, we usually get the family meal and share. The cornbread muffins are good, they'd be even better if they came out hot and the cinnamon butter is so good. Onion rings, cajun fries & BBQ beans are good choices if you are unsure about the other side. Pork ribs fall off the bone, pulled pork sandwich is great, restaurant is clean, cooking staff are so nice when I asked them for extras. Place is clean, lots of parking available.
Not the biggest fan of the the kitchsy decor, but it does have a certain charm. The food however, was pretty great. Juicy brisket was actually juicy, and Mac and cheese and fries were decent. I wouldn't mind a larger selection of sauces, but the jalapeño BBQ sauce was pretty good.
Good food served fast, tasty but could be hotter in temp. I had BBQ ribs that were nice just cool
I've been to this place a few years ago. Service has improved. Place is always clean and the people that work there are helpful.
The food was dry but enjoyable, there is BBQ sauce available so it wasn't terrible
Good food, only thing I didn't like were the ribs. They had a sweet dry rub I wasn't into and they were dry.
I'm sad they've closed all their locations except this one. Back in the day, they were phenomenal . Times have changed, but the Sunnyvale location was my go-to whenever I was craving quick and easy BBQ on my lunch break at work. The Texas Toast and Mac N Cheese were to die for. They weren't the most authentic Southern BBQ, but I will miss it. I have eaten at this particular location and it was just fine, not near me but hopefully it survives.
BBQ ribs are nicely flavored but could be more tender. Fries are hot and fresh. Peanut slaw is also a pretty good change of pace from the normal creamy slaws. The staff is friendly. Plenty of parking as the restaurant is located in a strip mall next to the hobby lobby. Decent beer selections with Shiner Bock on tap.
We were craving for BBQ after a long day out and found Armadillo Willy’s BBQ. We decided for the baby back ribs and a baby back ribs + meat combo. The ribs were ok, nothing special or extremely tender but not bad for sure. The brisket I had as additional meat was amazing! Sides are typical for BBQ, we tried the Texas toast fries and the cole slaw and all were perfectly fine. A solid BBQ if you crave some Meats.
Pretty yummy food. Quick service too. Food was ready within minutes. LOVED the Cajun and Garlic Parmesan fries!!!
I had a bowl of tortilla soup. It is served with a grilled corn bread muffin. The soup was broth, onions, spices, tortilla strips, cilantro and chicken. It comes with lime and Avocado which I left out #allergygirl. It was tasty and filling. They have a cup or bowl. I got the bowl. The corn bread muffin is amazing!!! It is served with a cinnamon butter which I can’t have but it didn’t need it. It was moist and warm.
The tater tots were so good! They were very crispy and not oily. I loved dipping it in their original sauce. I had their baby back ribs too and it was okay. It was pretty dry and didn't fall off the bone and I dipped it in the sauce for flavor. There were plenty of tables to choose from, you order at the register, grab a seat, and wait for your name to be called for your order. It's pretty loud in there so you have to stand near the window to listen for your name. Overall I'd come back for the tots and try something else.
The staff here was very friendly and fun to deal with, especially the cashier. The food was good, but nothing to write home about. Don’t get me wrong, the meats were cooked perfectly, juicy and delicious. But the bark, my favorite part of smoked barbecue, was lacking some flavor and pepperiness. The portion sizes were pretty decent and they run on average with what a lot of barbecue places charge
It was my first time there. The food was good! Definitely recommend the corn muffin!! The atmosphere was nice and it wasn't too crowded for a Friday. The chef's behind the counter were super nice!! The women's washroom could use some work tho. The guy in the office or register could have been a little more friendly too. But overall it was a good food spot. And not too busy for Friday lunch.
If you're looking for a Texas style BBQ, this is the place to go. I recently read that all the locations closed except for this one. It's not a sports bar, only two flat screens above the main dining area. It's not a place for a date, unless you and your guest are BBQ lovers. The food is great as it has been since 1983. I ordered a full rack of baby back ribs, l have to say that they gave me 30% more ribs (18 bones) than any other place I've been to. The amount of fat on the ribs were perfect, that it was juicy, yet it doesn't make you lose your appetite. The sauce was the best and well balanced. Everyone's taste buds are different, this is my favorite. I recommend that you try this place before it closes. I live in the East Bay area, I'll be crossing the bridge just to eat here. It's deliciously worth the trip.
The brisket was way too dry and the beans weren't tasty. Slaw was pretty good. BBQ sauce wasn't very enjoyable either. I don't plan on coming back.
New update. July 2024 Slow decline. French fries were hot and crisp. Turkey and brisket are good. No fresh brewed ice tea 😞 Cole slaw looked and tasted sort of blah. -------- Texas style BBQ. If you are a meat eater, check it out. Very casual. --- March 2019 update They replaced the previous fresh cut fries, with what appears to be frozen pre-cut fries. Disappointed 😕 Subtracted a star.
As I would hope from a Texas BBQ, the meat was well cooked. I had the tri-tip with Texas toast and corn salad. Their two sides with a serving of meat was just the perfect amount to satisfy me. The corn salad was a little bland at the surface, but it got better as I dug deeper into the bowl. I appreciated the amount of toast and seasoning on it. I just really wish that both sides were toasted because the other side was very soft. Even though the food was well made, it all lacked something that made it stand out. I would definitely go with family or friends who want to go again, but it wouldn't be my choice restaurant.
Pricey BBQ for what you get honestly but the food is good. Ribs are fall off the bone and done well. Chicken was juicy but could have been seasoned more. For these pricey I was hoping for a lil more.
Beef briskets while tasty, the portion is very small compared to the almost $30 price tag; baby back ribs were too dry and not juicy enough (just my personal opinion)
The sausage sandwich was all right, but I’ve had better. It seemed only a little better than what I could put together from pre-cooked ingredients at the grocery store. Also, at this price point I expect toasted buns on the sandwich. The fries were pretty good, fresh, and crispy though.
Got brisket ($29) and tri tip add on ($5.40). Proportion sizes are good. However, I was very disappointed with quality. Brisket meat was dry and cold. Not juicy and seemed like cheapest kind of meat you can ever find. The tri tip was tough. Zero marbling. I would not order again. For $50 dinner I could have gone to a Brazilian steakhouse.
They ask for your phone number, then hand you a receipt with an order number on it, then they just shout "order up" and you're expected to get up and go check to see if it's your order. Wth? Soda machine not working. New Age music in a Texas BBQ place is pure blasphemy. Had to bus our own table. Food mediocre at best. Being from Texas it's not hard to see that this place used to be a Freebirds World Burrito. Maybe y'all should consider changing it back
If you're looking for an intense smoked BBQ flavor, you won't find it here. The meats are cooked perfectly but it's lacking smoke flavor. Food plating and presentation is great. Dining room is excellent with adequate seating. Nice atmosphere for family or group of various sizes. We have been here a few times and always order the BBQ Rib and Brisket Platter. The BBQ sauces are okay. The corn salad and peanut slaw are tasty.
Definitely not as good as it used to be. This place no longer has that Texas feel and the food was just alright. They were playing some weird new age ambient music instead of country. The ambiance felt very off for it being a Texas BBQ joint.
The food experience here is super mid. The brisket and Texas BBQ ribs are drying than my kid's chicken tenders. It was edible with their BBQ sauce but it was a struggle. The ribs do come off the bone pretty easily and the fatter pieces were quite tender for the brisket but again, super dry. Mac and cheese was good. Fries were okay but nothing really stands out.
We ordered the Texas ribs and the smaller portion brisket with fries and potato salad. Both meat had flavor but both were dry and cold. It tasted old meat in my opinion. It was a slow afternoon so I don’t know if that helps. The sides were good. The place is huge and I can see it packed during game day. I’ve had better barbecue in Ca.
Our family decided to eat somewhere in Bridgepoint as we wanted to shop at Target. This place has high reviews among others. The ribs are decent, but it’s quite fatty and oily to me, though my husband likes it. The soup is very good though, so that’s a plus. We ordered kid meals for our son, wanted a chicken sandwiches, but they ran out of chicken, so we chose pulled pork. Let’s say my son is picky eater who refuses to eat anything not delicious, and that night he only had fries for dinner, and some buns. We had the pulled pork all to ourselves, and it’s not tasty. The restaurant is well decorated and clean, but I’d love if they can check the soap in the toilet every now and then.
Ordered online. Even though the check off list on the outside of the bag had the correct items listed, it didn't correspond to what was actually in the order. Got shorted one meat and the rest of the order was wrong. Had checked the option for curbside pickup, but got no response when I called to say I had arrived. The call was dropped twice, so I ended up having to go in anyway. The food is good, but overpriced for the quality and quantity.
The portions are extremely small, the pulled pork was kind of dry, the mac n cheese barely had flavor, the BBQ sauce was basic, and the fries were just okay.
Good food, tiny servings. I ordered takeout and for ~$36 I got 3 ribs, a tiny cup of mac n cheese (no fork provided), 3 slices of brisket, and fries. The fries were the only thing that had a good serving size. No drinks were ordered either. The food itself tasted good, but it was not filling due to the tiny portions. Don't order here unless you want an expensive snack.
I ordered take-out. It was a little bit of a wait but not too bad. But when I arrived at my remote location to eat, I opened up the bag, only to discover there were no napkins or eating utensils. I ordered a side house salad with ranch dressing and a salmon burger. The sandwich was in a carton by itself with no condiments on the side, like pickles. It would have been nice to have them. For the price, it seems appropriate. The food was OK, but overall, I'm disappointed. It was my first experience there. I don't think I'll be returning.
The brisket was the driest brisket I've ever had. Granted, I did opt for the lean option... You can get lean, fatty, or 50/50. But it was super dry and it felt overcooked. The brisket sandwich also didn't come with coleslaw, it was just overcooked dry brisket on a bun. The bun was good, and the white cheddar mac and cheese was pretty good, but this place has absolutely nothing on Everett and Jones BBQ and I won't be back. There was also no music playing in the restaurant. The person who took my order was helpful and friendly, and the soda fountain had Mug root beer, but it was very unfortunate about the brisket.
Nothing Texas or BBQ about this place. Pretty sure they just “BBQ” all their food in a convection oven. Aaron Franklin prices for some school cafeteria BBQ. Only thing semi worth it was the jalepeno sausage.
This place is the Chipotle of BBQ places. Calling the food mediocre is generous. You don't get alot of meat, was luke warm, the cold bbq sauce is served on the side, and the food is overpriced for what actually arrives. A BBQ brisket sandwich had 5 pieces of thin meat and nothing else, was bland and cost $17.99. properly priced what I got should have cost maybe 6 and change. If it's calories and no taste you want and 0 bang for your buck then come on over because this place would like to serve you up some trash and take your money.
Back in the day I used to give this place 5 stars. Would always order the pulled pork sandwich and would get a second one at times from how good it was. This is my second time of recently coming here and it’s just not the same at all. My sandwich was so dry and low quality, I finished it because of how expensive it was if not I would’ve left it there. A shame this place turned out like this but unfortunately a lot of places changed like this after Covid.
All the goodness went down the drain. Visited twice during in 2021, both times were just sad. First was a takeout, my son's kids meal- pulled pork sandwich was rancid. Took us a while to realized as he was taking far too long to eat it. So we thought he might not be hungry, and offered to finish it for him instead. To our horror, the pulled pork was rancid, once you get your mouth up close, the smell just burn your nose!!!! Next was a dine in, as we used to love the place so much(my review 3 years ago, according to Google was FIVE stars). We order ribs and burgers. Ribs still taste wonderful, but portion is much smaller. Now the problem is the burger, the patty was so THIN that it's almost none existent. We had to literally peel off the bun to marvel at it. And it's BURNT, thus dry! As we were leaving the restaurant (we tipped the usual) we looked each other in the eyes and I said," I don't think we should come back again." My husband nodded in agreement. And you can tell he was sad, as he love this joint.
The food is ok! Definitely not worth the prices. I got the bbq chicken and it was ok the barbecue sauce and the toast was the best part. Other than that it wasn’t all that great. I’m he potatoe salad tasted like store bought.
Very dry brisket: Brisket was bone dry. It didn't seem that it was freshly cooked, and it may have possibly dried out due to reheating process. Meat was a bit cold too that again suggest it may had been leftover from an older batch. Anyhow very disappointing brisket! Corn salad was disappointing too. Corn should've been grilled/smoked a bit. Felt very basic!
Place smell good but unfortunately the food fell short. Both lacking in flavor and dry
These guys are playing the Spanish brodcast of the superbowl. Lame. Make armadillo willies great again. Soda fountain is always out of soda. Get a new manager.
Worst “Texas” brisket I’ve ever had very bland, no seasoning on meat, hardly any smoke ring, if I had to guess they smoke it for a hour or two and finish it in ovens. Tasted like California roast beef. Brisket could use a 50/50 salt pepper rub or even if they want to have a million dollar brisket use salt pepper garlic and lowerys seasoning. Brisket fat would render down and taste delicious and candy like melt in your mouth every bite.
I travel all over California trying different bbq foods. Order the ribs+1 which was tri-tip and fries with texas toast and corn bread. They gave me 2 texas toast and not my corn bread. The tri-tip very dry like if its yesterday meat. The ribs were mid but did also receive a hard dried up piece. Fries were the best part of the meal.
