It was so adorable. It has this appeal that pubs in Ireland have. Although it's an English pub. The food was Awesome and the tall blond bartender He isSo Cute! The bar manager is super down to earth and she is a total sweet heart♡ Turns out they also do karaoke on Thursday Nights too !

Passing through on our way to a cruise, ate here last night on a whim. AMAZING food! The fish and chips was the one of the best I've ever had, washed down with a nice dark glass of Guinness. Gayle was a great waitress and took excellent care of us. Great place, would be a regular if I lived here!

Quaint Scottish pub. 1st time there, some items are no longer on the menu..however food was excellent. Shepherd pie was A1

One of my favorite pubs in the area. They often have Boddington's on tap which is one of my favorites and pretty hard to find! Very nice wood interior. Nice outdoor seating area right now. Food is a bit pricey but delicious, big fan. Wish I lived closer.

The W & A is an whole vibe that can stand entirely on its own two feet. The atmosphere within the pub is very cordial and inviting; it invokes wholesome feelings of comfort and familiarity that begin to settle over you the moment you cross the threshold. The Menu is filled with a variety of authentic English and Irish dishes, all of which are prepared and served with a quality that is more akin to that of a fine restaurant than it is a classic Pub. The bar has a subtle, classy approach that is stocked purposefully with favorite choice labels, delightfully crafted drink mixtures, and a beautifully selected variety of wines. I would more than happily recommend a visit here to anyone who has yet to give it a try. You won't be sorry 🙂

Invited to whale and ale by a friend who lives locally. Enjoyed the street side seating outdoors. Except for the traffic of course! Food was excellent! Atmosphere is like an old Irish pub! My other friend who came with us, mentioned that he was planning on taking his wife there sometime soon. This is a very favorable place!

Great experience, for a post covid sidewalk lunch it was a wonderful time. I ordered the shepherd's pie and my wife had the fish and chips; both very good and authentic to the old country. We washed it all down with a cool glass of pilsner, there is a great beer selection to boot. Friendly service and quality dining, highly recommend to those that love English style taverns, best of it's kind in the area.

We had a birthday party for 7 and each of us enjoyed our various main dishes. It's a British restaurant of course and I didn't ask if my meal came with vegetable. It did not. Next time I will ask what comes with the meal and substitute vegetable for rice, which was quite good but not my diet. Apple pie and caramel cake pudding were quite good. The bread pudding was kind of so-so. Nice environment to be in.

Great place! The inside of the place has a really cool old fashion English pub style to it and the food was superb. The bread pudding desert is incredible. Get it with a cup of coffee and it makes a dynamic duo. Definitely will eat here again.

Friendly, efficient service and terrific food (Shepherds Pie, Prime Rib, Fish and Chips, Sticky Toffee Pudding to name a few that we've enjoyed)! Good wine and beer list plus generous, well made cocktails. Try it, you'll like it!

One of the greatest places in San Pedro for hearty food. My family and I enjoyed a massive and deliciously cooked Rib eye, Beautifully breaded shrimp and chips, steak sandwich au jus and an amazing steak and mushroom pie. Service was excellent, the beer was ice cold and with a great variety. Definitely will come back because the only thing I didn't get to try was the bread pudding that happened to be sold out

Good pub grub in a pleasant atmosphere. Pleasant server and well presented meal. W&A is a long time San Pedro venue in the heart of the downtown district. Famous for their fish and chips and their meat pies. Live music on some nights. And let's not forget their selection of beers. I am not a drinker so am not qualified to comment. I had the open face turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. Thus was quite good, with tasty meat and gravy, nicely glazed vegetables, and lightly browned mashed potatoes. The dash was served with cranberry sauce. The bill including tax and a generous tip was $18.

Great fish and chips. Tim is an excellent waiter. You don't need a reservation, but it might be a good idea on the weekend. Good jazz music tonight. Music every Friday. Wife says the Shepard pie is great!

We sat outside and they immediately turned up the heaters and made sure we were comfortable. The service was excellent. We asked about drink recommendations and food recommendations and they were spot on. The rib eye was flavorful and the burger was very tasty! The coconut margarita with the black salt did not disappoint!! Definitely will be back.

The best fish and chips in this area. Great music on Friday nights. Service was just right, food excellent. Great way to wind down on a Friday night. Make reservations. Ate here again, March 2022. Was very disappointed in the fish n chips. The fish wss way overcooked, crunchy outside, really crunchy inside. Chips were also overcooked. Took my folks to dinner here....either they have a new cook or someone wasn't paying attention. Would have been better if I stayed home to cook. Service was great!

Fantastic little pub in the nicest block in downtown San Pedro. The owners are amazing! Super friendly, attentive and really love what they do. Our server was also very friendly and made us feel very welcome. They are organizing a dog friendly happy hour on thursdays which I thought was really nice. They give every dog treats, a clean water bowl and a lot of love (Extra points!) Food is delicious, specially their potato wedges (Fries)! Their beer and cocktails are also great. I will definitely come back!

Oh my goodness! Being English can be challenging when craving food from home; The Whale & Ale did not disappoint!!! FABULOUS food, great staff. Sat outside and enjoyed the vibe of San Pedro. New go-to for great food/service/atmosphere. Also try the London Pride beer if still searching for a lager- delicious. Recommended to all!

The food here is INCREDIBLE. There was nice live music, and the owner is super friendly. There's a beautiful fireplace that's lit when it's colder, and you felt so welcomed. Great first night of our honeymoon while awaiting our cruise the next morning.

Ended up at the Whale & Ale while on a brief visit to San Pedro and loved it. The restaurant is very clean, classic, and inviting. Great drink/beer selection and while the food menu was limited due to the soft opening, the food was excellent! We ended up chatting with the owners for a while and they were both funny, friendly, and wanted to make sure that we had a great experience. I'll come back to San Pedro specifically to go to the Whale & Ale and need to check out Campagno next door too! Thanks for a great time.

We happened upon this spot when the local fishmarket was too packed to visit. Im glad we did. Definitely worthy of a repeat. The owners and staff are top notch, attentive, and kind. Location is cute and plenty of seating. That Sticky Toffee transported me back to London. Please pay this place a visit. Invest local. They are more than worth it.

I love Mardo and the entire staff. Friendly crew and delicious food. I’ve had burgers, pastrami, salads, sausage stuff, shepherds pie, salmon…just about everything. It’s all so good. Tonight I had the bread pudding with ice cream. It has a custard-ee base. It was pudding-ee with crispy edgies here and there. So good!!! I highly recommend.

So glad this place reopened. We went on St. Patrick's Day without a reservation. It was packed, but we were still able to get a table. Of course we had the Corned Beef with cabbage, potatoes and carrots. Very good. We also had the Clam Chowder. My husband is from Boston, and is very picky about his Chowda. It failed the spoon test, but tasted outstanding. It's difficult to find here in Southern California without it tasting extremely bland. Yuk!!! It was a little low key for a St. Patty's Day, but still fun. Definitely going back.

The Whale and Ale Gastropub offers a unique blend of English food, beer on tap and friendly staff interactions. Wyatt serviced us with a friendly and open to questions attitude. We especially appreciated learning about the business through the eyes of owner Mardo. The food was delicious and definitely something to come back for. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Just spent a great Friday night here. The fish and chips was perfect and reminded me of the classic Wisconsin fish fry we always had every Friday before moving to San Pedro. They are a little short staffed, so be patient during busy times. Make sure to end the dinner with their amazing sticky pudding.

The Whale and Ale is on 7th Street in Old Town San Pedro. It is a hidden gem and you must try it when you are in town. They have the best pub food in the City. It is just a perfect place. Parking is on the street or behind the store front. We easily found metered parking right in front. We were there for lunch and it was not too crowded. We decided to eat outside and we loved it. It was a wonderful day and the umbrella kept out any sun in our faces. The entire staff is ever so kind. We were greeted right away and seated. A server was soon with us for a drink order. The menu is great. It goes beyond just pub food, it is fine dinning food in a pub. It is that great. We ordered calamari, mac and cheese and fish and chips. My grandson ordered and the server was so sweet to him. We decided to share it all. And there was so much fish and chips we had some to take home. The calamari was lightly breaded and just wonderful. I was able to get one before my "sharing" grandson ate the rest. The mac and cheese was out of this world. It was so full of cheese and had a great cheese grated top. We have ordered mac and cheese at some very expensive places and this one tops them all. Just amazing. The fish and chips were battered perfectly and so good and we got 2 huge pieces and could not finish it. Not one item was any less than what you might find at a 5 star fine dinning place. The prices are reasonable. We went inside and found spotless bathrooms and the cutest bar and sitting area. They even have a fire place. All the staff said hello as we walked by. We felt so welcome and we don't drink. Oh, and they have live music at night. Go there. You will just love this place. It is amazing.

N

I was impressed by this place. We were just walking by and decided to stay for a drink. We ended up ordering dinner. The food was incredible. I've been told that British food isn't the best, but this was sooooo good. We ordered fish and chips, shepherd's pie, claw chowder and a brisket sandwich. It was delicious.

This place is great! We were in San Pedro for the night looking for somewhere to grab a small bite and a couple drinks. The bartender made an excellent martini, and our food was tasty. They had a small menu for their soft opening--we got the ploughman's platter and a caesar salad. I feel like a caesar salad is a good litmus test for a restaurant and they did theirs really well. Nice atmosphere too! The owner was walking around checking on all the tables to make sure everyone was happy. He stopped and chatted with us for a while which was really nice! He and his friend of many years are business partners/co-owners. I appreciated their taking time to get to know us and be so hospitable. One of the co-owners also owns the French wine bistro next door, which I really want to try now too. We'll definitely be back next time we're down in San Pedro!

I haven’t been to Whale & Ale in years but I found out new owners have transformed this pub. Wow was I impressed! Staff is so welcoming, professional and friendly too. Halloween/Anniversary date at the Whale and Ale. They decorated the place and it looks even more quaint and cozy. The sausage rolls were DIVINE!!!! Omg we couldn’t stop eating them. The fish n chips were on point, flaky, and no fishy taste. Wonderful. And the fiancées Shepard pie was scrumptious.

Visited on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and chose to eat outside on the patio. First the service was great! Greeted warmly and promptly when entered by what seemed all the staff. Ha, it was “hello & welcome” in stereo. My girlfriend had the Steak & Mushroom Pie and loved it! Great recommendation from our waitress. I went for my favorite, good old Fish & Chips. And they didn’t disappoint! Perfectly crisp fresh cod, and the chips were made to perfection. Next time we’ll eat inside and take in the ambience that is Whale & Ale. But on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, it was tough to pass up the sunshine.

The staff and owner are super friendly and nice! I ordered the bangers and mash which was delicious. My husband ordered the fish and chips which was amazing and both were large orders. Moved to San Pedro a year ago, only to discover this place was closed. Imagine my delight when I found out it had reopened! I decided to check it out for the first time and was not disappointed. I started with a glass of French wine that was absolutely perfect—served in a glass with a decent rim, unlike the thick, cheap ones you often see at most pubs. For my meal, I ordered a burger that was succulent and topped with high-quality cheese, all on a brioche bun. And the pickles? Definitely not from a grocery store. The burger was so juicy that the juice dripped onto my fries, making them taste even better. For dessert, I treated myself to an espresso martini, and I’m very picky about those. This one was simply divine. My husband ordered an Old Fashioned, which was far from average and it was phenomenal. What a fantastic experience all around! Can't wait to come back.

A truly authentic piece of Britain that has absolutely fantastic authentic food. The owner Andrew made a point of asking me how our meal was and Wyeth was an excellent server. As a brick myself I will totally recommend if you're even remotely hungry and somewhere near here you have to give this restaurant a try.

Fun pub atmosphere, the fish n' chips was awesome, their tartar sauce was made on site and was fantastic. We went because it was an old haunt that we hadn't visited in years, while under new ownership from when we went back in the mid 2000s, the food, while different from memory, was still fantastic.

This pub has a cozy, old-English feel that’s rare in LA County. I had the fish and chips, which were crispy and flavorful without being greasy. The interior has wood paneling and dim lighting, making it perfect for a laid-back evening. They had live music on the night I visited, which added to the atmosphere. It’s a nice break from trendy bars.

Wow!! This place has absolutely amazing fish and chips!! Very flavorful with a light vodka batter. Plus their homemade tarter sauce and french fries were amazing. Highly recommend!!!

I definitely recommend this place. I went on a cold night and they had the fireplace going and we sat next to it and it felt amazing and extremely cozy. The entire inside is a dark wood, which makes you feel like you're actually in England. The food was also great. We had the deep fried onion and burger. Both were very good. Probably some of the best fries that I've ever had. Also, the service from Sarah and the owner were very nice and certainly made us wanna come back. They also had live music when we were there which was also very nice.

Myself, wife and 2 fiends went there for lunch on Jan. 17. I cannot get over how great our server was (Cannot remember her name) She was fabulous. Very friendly and engaging. Food was top shelf. We hope to be back next time we are in the LA area

Small menu yet amazing food!! That’s the way to do it. We loved the atmosphere and friendly service to our family. Shepherds pie was delish and can’t wait to try the fish and chips next.

Fun pub atmosphere, the fish n' chips was awesome, their tartar sauce was made on site and was fantastic. We went because it was an old haunt that we hadn't visited in years, while under new ownership from when we went back in the mid 2000s, the food, while different from memory, was still fantastic.

Authentic British pub with great food. The fish and chips are spot-on and the service is excellent. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. They often have live music too. Love coming here for a relaxing evening.

Great fish and chips and pretty good fried calamari too. They had to reduce the size of their menu due to the pandemic but they kept a lot of their better items. If you're looking for a casual pub lunch or dinner in Pedro, then this is your place!

Authentic English pub feel. The food is really good , just a tad bit expensive. The menu definitely reminds you of a typical UK pub. We had the fish n chips and tandoori lamb, both were good options! Will definitely go again!

Pretty nice pub with good food. I ordered the shepherds pie and the flavor was nice, my only complaint would be the 10-12 pieces of bay leaves I kept pulling out of my mouth while I was eating and it was just slightly on the oily side. Browning the meat with a bit of flour and adding a little stock might have given it more of a gravy consistency. My wife and daughter absolutely loved the fish and chips. I think they could have been fried in a little bit hotter oil, maybe 25 degrees hotter to get them a touch crisper and more golden color. Obviously these are my very nitpicky preferences and overall we had a really great experience. Our server was so pleasant and attentive. If you're waiting for a table, there's a really great record shop next door that is easy to spend time looking through their collection. I'll definitely be back for a pint and a pie.

Had an excellent lunch the first time I went. Dinner was okay on my second visit, although the shrimp and chips left me unsatisfied (way more chips than shrimp). The lamb chops are absolutely succulent! Good service, prices fair for the area and setting.

I'm always ready to try a pub. I visited San Pedro and made this a stop. The sausage rolls were excellent. I also enjoyed their house salad and a oint of Guinness. The atmosphere was a bit full and could use some music. Service was great and friendly. There is a bar in the back, very traditional. There's dining seating in the front and outside.

Nice...family environment. Quiet and relaxing on a Saturday day of April. Good service. Reasonable prices.

This place has improved from previous years. The only negative was having to shew flies away. This may have occurred because we visited on 1st Thursday and the door was propped open.

Traditional pub with English food favorites and full bar. Very relaxed atmosphere with dining area or you can sit at the bar. Shepherd's pie and bangers and mash are always a great way to go.

The food and drink were very good but my reason for visiting was the duo of Simon Spalding and James Hendrix. They are great fun to hear, sing along with and even play with for some of the tunes.

The newly renovation of the whole bar and restaurant was done in good taste. The owner was here at the time we came by to split a G. If you know what I mean. To those who don't, it means to drink a Guiness to the point where you split the G on the Guiness label on your pint of beer. The menu is short but sweet. With both lunch and dinner favorites. Come back to enjoy the live music on Fridays and split a G with some friends.

Liked that there was a jazz band. Food is good. Had a cheeseburger. Companion had shepherd's pie. Nice place to be with friends, especially if you like live jazz music. Not sure, though, if music happens everyday...

We came in on first Thursday’s after exploring San Pedro for a bit. Very attentive server, nice ambience with open fireplace and old wood decor. Feels like an old Irish pub. Food is good. Sausage rolls were not what I expected, it’s an actual sausage wrapped in pastry, not ground meat. The Fish and chips were great and the gravy on the sausages and mash was really tasty. Two rounds of beers and ciders for two and it cost us $120 with tax and tip. Also they had karaoke on Thursday night which was a nice surprise. Recommend if you’re looking for warm vibe and comfort food.

Food was good. Atmosphere had the feel of a 200-year-old Dublin pub. Fish and burgers slightly undercooked. May have to send back for more cooking. Staff were very accommodating. Arriana (server) was super nice, knowledgeable, and unbelievably sweet. I'll be back!

Stopped in to try the fish and chips. Loved the look of the place and the friendly atmosphere. Fish and chips were good. Grabbed a Guinness as well which was a decent pour. Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend if you’re in the area.

Came here on a Saturday evening. Other than the food..which was very good, the service was slow and not very friendly. Also, unless you want to shout to have a conversation, avoid this place when they have live music. Too small and way way too loud. We may return but not go out of our way

Service was good at first then after we got our food getting the check and paying too almost as long as it took to get our food

This is an Irish pub in San Pedro, so it's not necessarily where you think to look for Irish fare. Our server was great....very friendly and very attentive, and all the staff seemed pretty welcoming. The atmosphere is a bit more dive bar than Irish pub and could use a little updating. The food was a little hit and miss. The chowder was a little fishy, and the ice cream with the bread pudding was freezer burned. But the French Dip was really good (and those fries/chips are probably worth the visit all by themselves)! The Scotch egg was different than any other we've tried, but in a good way. We went on a Saturday afternoon, and it wasn't super busy, but was starting to pick up as we left. So probably a good sign that the locals were starting to flow in. Not a "must stop", but worth a try.

The service was good, but the food was just OK. The Shepard’s pie wasn’t that great, but the fish and chips and fish tacos were good. The scotch egg was ok. They did have a mushroom soup and that was absolutely amazing though!

New Chef. Used to be great food and atmosphere with decent portions. Tonight I received Luke warm Steak and Mushroom pie in a soup bowl. With one ladle of filling and a mass produced puff pastry square on top. The beef and mushroom pie portion was a small ladle. Really disappointed. Seems like new chef is looking to make a mark by changing standards and save food costs. We are not fooled. Rookie mistake.

The place needs a good cleaning, ketchup bottle and salt shaker were filthy. Prices were extremely high for the quality of food. Gave two stars for the beer selection. The price on the receipt is their Happy Hour prices......

We made reservations for Easter Sunday. The waitress Jessica was the best very friendly and on top of everything. My wife ordered prime rib medium rare. It arrived medium well. She couldn't even cut it with a knife. It was horrible. We sent it back. It was that bad. The owners were there and covered for 1 drink which was nice. But the food was horrible. Just horrible. Needless to say we will not return.

Was good back in the day but now they give you lame size pieces of fish. I bought 2 fish n chips n paid $60 for a small size meal. I wouldn't recommend it at all
