Foster's Freeze in Santa Rosa is a classic spot known for its burgers and milkshakes, evoking nostalgia for many. While some appreciate the fresh food and friendly service (Alex mentioned), others find it overpriced and inconsistent in quality, with some complaints about pricing and service.

I don’t know I know it’s old fashion I used to just get a vanilla cone on the way to LA just before the grapevine that place is gone :-( find a couple of cool places in Napa and here as well in Santa Rosa. I have a new trick I get a Nila con That’s dipped in chocolate you know the kind it hardens up then I ask for a large cup and a spoon dropped the whole thing in then pop off the cone have the ice cream in the cone and then settle back to a nice upside down chocolate sundae with a hard shell.:-) Now you know my inter-most secrets
Retro ice cream stand. Only had a shake, but it was delicious; made from quality soft serve. A few picnic tables outside makes for available seating. Otherwise, strictly carry out.
Fosters has been a Staple for me since I was a small child and as an Adult it is still a Favorite Go To Spot. The Boss Burger is Amazing and My Fiancé loves their waffle fries and deep fried burritos. And if you still have room when your done dont pass up on their Chocolate Dipped Cone or Triple Berry Shake!!!
Its great. Above average good food. Affordable. There's a reason its been there since before i was born 40 years ago and will probably still be there for my grandchildren to enjoy.
We only get ice cream here (not burgers or anything) so I can only speak to that. Cute little old fashioned walk-up with great soft serve. Simple as it gets!
Omg! Great place for ice cream! If you got kids they will love it here! All around a great place to go and enjoy some good food and ice cream!
Love this place and so sad that there's only a couple of them left. The food is freshly made and worth the wait. Always a great place to stop by for some yummy food.
I never had Foster's Freeze before and I'm upset I've lived here for four years and just now having it. The food is great and well worth the stop and wait.
This place is awesome!!! The ladies working on the day I went were so sweet. It was my first time taking my kids there and they did a great job on the sundaes
Now this is truly a little hole in the wall. But to me it is the original Foster Freeze. I loved the hamburgers and of course the soft ice cream cone dipped in chocolate. Doesn't get any better than this.
This my favorite fosters freeze, it may not look like the cleanest but the food is always great and quick and the employees are awesome. It's just an old building.
my children and grandchildren go there because of the good food, something for everyone. when you have a child who is very picky. But she always likes something they have. plus it brings back memories.
I've been coming here since I was a small kid with my grandpa, the quality Still Remains and overall everything is absolutely fantastic. The only thing I don't like much is the indoor eating area is a little dirty and can get super hot during the summer, but outside of that if you're just hoping to grab food and go this is a great place.
All the food there at the Fosters Freeze in Sta. Rosa is ALWAYS tasty. The burgers are big and delicious and they have a very extensive selection of yummy food to choose from. The service is polite (like places used to be.) However, the prices are not like a Marranos OR Junk in the Box, but neither is the quality or food. So do yourself a favor and say, "next time make mine a Fosters Freeze, please!" See you there!
This is the best Foster Freeze in Northern California! A local fav, I have been coming here for more than 50 years and they still deliver some of the best fast food, creamy shakes, dipped cones and more. If you want something slightly askew of the menu, just ask!
My husband and I love this place. Good burgers and fries. My favorite part is the ice cream choices. So many to choose from and all are delicious. I usually get a corn dog cuz they're really yummy
Fosters Freeze is always A delight. Reminds me of My Grandpa taking us all to get a Vanilla Cone dipped in Chocolate. Grandma loves the Fish & Chips. I now get to Carry on what my Grandparents used to do and take my Grandbabies for a Vanilla Cone. Always A Good Place to grab a bite & dessert simple and delicious.
Just stopped by for a late night Hot Fudge Sundae with my wife. Very fast service even with a bit of a line. I have always loved their soft serve ice cream. I've never been to this location until now. I grew up going to the one in Berkeley on University, then have been to a few others around the greater bay area. I use to like their burgers back in the day, so I'll have to give one a go next time. *New Follow @WhatsEatingMo Twitter - IG - YouTube Coming soon: More reviews and videos. What a blast from my childhood 💜 We just moved up from a place where Fosters Freeze doesn't exist. I thought they were no longer around. Then I stumbled across this gem 💜 I had what I used to call a "Zebra cone" - the vanilla and chocolate twisted together, squee! It was just as good as I remembered from my childhood 💜 There's so much more than there was when I was a kid hundreds of years ago 😉 My kids had a hard time deciding. One finally picked one that sounded good but sadly, he hadn't noticed that there were marshmallows in the gorgeous concoction. I brought it back to them hoping they could, IDK, give it to a deserving soul (yes, I know it's against health code but my son hadn't touched it and it felt bad to throw it away). Of course, they threw it away. I ordered a replacement and told them I was paying for it as it wasn't their fault my son didn't see "marshmallows" but, they gave it to me for free! Sadly, I only had $1 in cash on me 😭. I'll definitely go back and bring a bigger tip! That was above and beyond 💜
The guy was super funny and warned me never to put tomato ketchup on my ramen ever again. I had a huge laugh, tasty shakes and crispy fries. I highly recommend this place.
One of the best quick burgers on the West coast! Everytime we head back to Santa Rosa CA we have to come. Consistent burgers, great fries and best shakes on Earth. There is also a small eating area that you see behind me using the #payphone.
Not many of these around anymore but glad I can still get a twister, dipped cone, or curly fries when the mood strikes. Staff has always been fast and friendly to us. Parking lot is small and shared with other shops, but I can usually find it close by on the little side street if I have to.
Staying true to it's classic roots. Even know this place is pretty deep in the hood you'd never even know it. The same tasty delights enjoyed at your local Foster Freeze can he had right here on Sebastopol Rd. Really quality food for a fast food restaurant. I'd eat here over any of the others(McD's, Burger King, Wendys, etc.)any day.
This is the same place I grew up with when we came from Sonoma to Santa Rosa to do clothes shopping for school in Coddingtown and Rosenberg's. Wow! I can't believe Foster's is still here and that it's been so long since the first time I went there.Tastes as good as I remember it!!! And even the pandemic couldn't take it down!!! Thank God 😊🙏🏻for that!!! I love 💘em and you will too!!!
Yummy! Burger was fresh to order. Looks like a locals staple.
We only get dipped cones and fries here, but they're consistently good and hit the spot when you want a nostalgic treat. Love that they're still here after all these years.
Great soft serve and delicious food. Walk up fast food that's quick and good.
The best Fosters in Santa Rosa, no doubt! The food is better, the desserts are made the way you actually want them to be, and the service is always top notch. The family that runs this one is super sweet and caring. I always drive the extra miles for this location in particular and I'm never disappointed❤️
I love this place! Friendly staff. Soft serve ice cream reminds me of my youth. I've never had anything else but other people seem to enjoy their meals.
Excellent food! Whenever I eat here it always makes me feel nostalgic takes me back to my childhood. One of the original burger joints in Santa Rosa way before Ronald,Jack or the king were here. I've been eating here for fifty years one of my favorites!
Really great experience here! The food was really really good and there was plenty of seating. I came here randomly, and so happy I came. My whole family including the kiddos loved it!
Great burger, my husband is a critic for sure and he couldn't stop talking about how amazing the double burger is and how it can compete with some of the top 10 in the US. I love their ice cream hands down and variations of simple foods.
The prices could b better 🙏✨
Yum!!!! Clean store and delicious ice cream.
I have to say that my opinion may seem a little biased because I work at this location now, but it's just honest. Foster's Freeze is a place that always reminds me of riding around running errands with my grandmother when I was a child. We always got lunch at Foster's Freeze. The food and the ice cream is just as good as I remember. I love that they do not make the fries until they are ordered.
Best tasting burger, fries, and drink combos my wife and I have had in a long time. The fries were probably the best I've had in my life, far better than restaurants that specialize in fries. The burgers were really solid, competing with and surpassing burgers I've eaten from places that specialize in expensive fancy burgers. The food was the first food in a long time to make both my wife and I feel happy through taste alone. The staff were friendly and upbeat while the atmosphere was happy and pleasant. A great place for a date. I had the Big Boss Burger combo, my wife had an old fashioned burger combo, and We split a oreo cheesecake twister. I highly suggest all three. We sat at the tables outside.
Prices may seem high, but wait until you taste the Strawberry Milkshake. It's worth the price!
Great food here at this place! I have always had friendly service, and the dining room has always been clean. It offers outdoor seating as well. Absolutely fantastic variety of food, including snack items, and beverages. Everything from fountain drinks to milkshakes, yum! The ice cream cones are a nice treat as well; and I definitely recommend getting a dipped cone! I highly recommend this establishment. Trust me, I drive almost two hours round-trip for the food!
When my daughter and I want to celebrate something by enjoying a delicious meal together, this is our go-to favorite place! She gets the number two burger with extra cheese, and I get a crispy chicken sandwich with ranch on the side, bcuz you gotta dip that shizzle to make it delicious manicious... The fries and onion rings are straight banging, and if you really want a treat, get yourself a chocolate milkshake WITH MALT! 😁❤️😁 Bruh. You can't go wrong with a twister, too, ofc...
Went for dessert after a good dinner. Wife and I both got peach ice cream items (I got a peach sundae and she got a peach cheesecake twister). They both were excellent. I'm glad we decided to go there and will go back if we are in the area again.
This is a must stop when passing through Vacaville. Single dipped cone and a shake. Friendly folks, a safe place to dine in out while parked outside. You should stop by and treat yourself to a cone, shake, or burger. You're going to be glad you did.
No matter when I go to Foster's, or whatever Foster's freeze I go to, there Burgers are the Best in and around any town that I've found, and the milk shakes, ☆☆☆☆☆, 5-star rating, hands down.
Some of the best burgers In Santa Rosa in my opinion. Sure is a little on the higher price, but it’s worth it for the flavor and the choice of food at the restaurant. Definitely a classic for me.
The Triple Berry Twister was delicious. It’s the kind of treat you won’t feel guilty about—so good that you’ll finish the whole cup without even realizing it.
Today is November is November 17th 2025 the food taste fresh, burger was cooked to perfection and chicken sandwich was cooked great, the fried was immaculate , Alex was really nice and helpful
Their peanut butter milkshake is second to none. 🍔 and fries of course are delicious, located very conveniently, kind employees. 5/5 easily!!!
Best chocolate dip cones. Real milk ice cream. A classic. Delicious!
I love Fosters Freeze. They aren't the speediest service in town. But the burgers have a consistant great taste. Love the way they do thier fries and the chocolate dipped soft icecream cones are delicious. Check em out if you want an old fashioned fast food expierience.
They were really good. Hamburgers so fresh, a bun slightly toasted, juicy buger, crisp Iettuce,Tom, pickle and onion. Just like the one we use to have in Seecpol(Sebastopol). It smells and looks like a septic tank now. Anyway that Foster Freeze has been there I know since the 1970s so that should tell you something. Enjoy
For over twenty years I've been a customer of Fosters Freeze in Santa Rosa. My favorite order is their half chocolate, half vanilla softie. And bacon cheese burger is good. Throw in some fried onion rings for a little more flavor. Enjoy.
Quaint little burger shack with a couple wooden tables. Walk-up order counter, usually not unfriendly servicers. Wait about 10 minutes if not busy, expect 20 in a crowd. Dang good burgers for the fast food game! Fries are crinkle-cut but they're fat and crispy. Comparable to inNout with more ice cream/snacky items.
I enjoy my Big Boss every once in a while with the Banana Milk Shake and I must say I'm never disappointed since I've been coming here...10+ years. There is a side covered seating area not many notice.
Really nice people and the best corn dogs around. The old fashion burger is good too. You can't go wrong with any of the soft serve offerings. I almost forgot the onion rings, the best of all the fast food places.
I've been going to this foster freeze my entire life and it's always been a pleasant time. there's a couple benches on the side and then there's like the indoor seating on the other side and it's always been the kind of a nice little hangout spot to get some ice cream
Nice mom and pop shop delicious REAL big burgers and soft tasty ice cream. LOVE the drive up old school style. Would've give 5 stars but they had no restroom.
I really enjoy this place. It seems a bit pricey, but when you're there it feels like the old days. All outside eating and a sort of outside include area as well. Really good icecream and I haven't been disappointed by a burger yet. Nice little joint to take kids to or go on a date.
I just like the soft serve vanilla ice cream. It’s my favorite.
Hey you spilled their drinks. Good waters though.
I grew up going to Foster’s Freeze and the flavor still hits the same. The burgers taste familiar and satisfying. The soft serve stays smooth and creamy. Every visit brings back good memories. This place keeps the nostalgia alive while delivering solid food. I keep coming back and always leave happy.
The prep has improved but The Franchises claim to Fame has always been its way of doing things..the current owner has NOT STAYED TRUE TO FORM.Doubt me? One example.Fosters signature ..ice cream cones. Fosters it's always had a signature way of making ice cream cones that right there is an indicator
Decent food, VERY high prices and calorie counts! Just make sure you know what you're getting yourself into, and you'll have a fun time going back to the diner style food and feel!
Overpriced. For a small cone, I paid almost $3.00. Okay, so it was dipped in chocolate. Ice cream was okay but McDonalds cones are just as good, and a lot cheaper, too.
Showed up at 9 and got told the kitchen was closed so no food or even French fries so we went forward with ice cream and then got told I need to spend a total of 10 dollars to be able to use my card. I figured I would give them a try since I come from inglewood the Original Foster's Freeze location. Maybe better luck next time
While the flavor never changes, the prices and quality definitely do. Cones were busted up, shake barely shaken and all of that for triple what it used to be. Thankfully it still tastes good but no need to go back any time soon.
Ice cream was good, but rather pricy. Service was good. Did not try the other food items, but the prices on the menu are very high for a fast food joint.
Oh how I have wanted to love this place as long as I have lived here in SR, but alas, I do not. It is fine if you want just "fast food" in that area and Super Burger across the street a few hundred yards is closed, or full ;-)
Food was great as always. A bit of a a wait but that's to be expected because it's always packed. Kinda shocking that chili cheese fries, a shake and a classic burger was $21 though. I could've given it one more star but the price got me.
Very expensive. Icecream was really good ! Would come back for the icecream. Dairy usualy hurts me but I didn't hurt with this icecream which makes me very happy
I was in Santa Rosa for an appointment, stopped at foster freeze for lunch for two people and it was $71.27 then had spot to ask for tip. I have been a life long customer of 45 plus years not including childhood in different locations. This was first time at this location, and am sorry to say I will never return nor will I ever return to a fosters freeze at any location!
Ice cream was great. But wayyyyy too expensive. You get side eye if you don't tip. Over 20 bucks for two small shakes
I know the foods great, but don’t bother showing up unless it’s before 9:30pm or all you’re getting is ice cream. 99% of the menu was shut down with no signs even mentioning it. 😕
This was a big let down, for how expensive the food is, they should get a better cook or something cause the onion rings where not editable from being burnt and over cooked maybe,(like they got left over the day before and then tossed back in the fryer for a 3rd time) the burgers I guess weren't to bad, tomato wasn't rip, little soggy on the bottom bun and the top bun was burnt, and the ice in the soda tasted like stagnant water or something, but the ice cream looked great and the customer service was good. Wouldnt recommend the food though unfortunately!! $65 for 3 meals and one plan cheese burger..
I go to order the spicy chicken boss and they don’t have any. fine. I ask for all of my meal in a large and instead they gave me everything in a small. I spent $60 on four meals and it’s like whats is the point of going somewhere to order something if you can’t even have the people taking an order listen to you. Also ate a few uncooked fries.
Wow! Just wow! We visited this location and were blown away. The prices are quite expensive and they do not offer any small, mini or kids sizes to combat waste. What we were stunned by was their complete lack of customer service. They post signs that if you treat them with respect, that is what you get back however they did not do that for me. After prepaying the portal including the tip, I ordered a peanut butter cup twister; what they gave me was a peanut butter sauce twister. When I questioned this, the counter person admitted that he did not hear the cup part and never confirmed the order with me. He turned around and asked someone about remaking it and that person said absolutely not and that I would need to deal with it. I was mortified with the lack of customer service. I told them I would not be eating it and they did not care. They got their money with tip and decided that was that. I will be telling everyone about this location and discouraging visiting.
The location is great because it's on the corner and you can enter the small parking lot from both sides. This location is wheelchair accessible in every way, but ordering through the small window could have some challenges . The people running and working there, when I went there , were great and personable. However, this Foster Freeze was way overpriced and lacked all Foster Freeze flavors and love in the food we were served. We ordered a chili cheese dog suitable for a small child very little cheese, a double bacon cheeseburger that came without any bacon and was so bland I knew the burger was a frozen patty and we ordered another double cheeseburger that also lacked that Foster Freeze flavor of love in its food preparation. Our order included fries that were mini size almost unacceptable to be considered a portion for any meal. $60 this was a major disappointment and an expensive lesson. I will not be returning to this Foster Freeze and because of the cost I will most likely inform my family and friends not to throw their money away for a little unsatisfactory very expensive meal.
I loved foster freeze, their burgers were like burgers you got back in the day wrapped in parchment paper, real beef, juicy, delicious and affordable! I went to one in Santa Rosa and first off I was price shocked, I could not contain my shock/surprise when she gave me the total of my order that consisted of 3 cheeseburgers, medium fries and a drink...$34! I haven't eaten out for a long time because I can't afford it but also cook out meals. I heard it was expensive but really???? The burger was nothing like I use to get, it had a fancy type bun, fries tasted like water and oil and didn't have Coke had to settle for Pepsi. The lady was nice, I feel bad to give this bad review but I really was shocked and disappointed. You may like it, this is my opinion everyone has one.
I ordered a number two I believe. I asked for a bbq sauce and the cashier told me it would be .75 for just one and one doesn’t not come with the meal. I get home to find the white part of the lettuce sliding out of my burger. If my meal is $14 I’d like to have green lettuce in my burger, or for it to be able to stay in the burger.
not the Foster Freeze I grew up with... the burgers are like rubber, they skimp on the fries and they charge $4 for the same cone I can get at McDonald's for $1. It'd be nice to be treated with a small bit of respect when your shelling out $28 for 4 oz. of chicken, a hamburger disk that taste like a chew toy and half a small potato.
Burger was way over done. Not a product for the cost. I only ordered a dipped ice cream my friend had the WELL done burger. The made the cone right away so I was done ( had too it immediately started melting) long before the burger was done burning.
I'm not to sure if I got robbed, but I ordered 1 burger meal, 1 chicken tenders meal, 1 extra chicken tenders only, 1 large chocolate ice cream, 1 large strawberry cheese cake twister, 1 large drink and chili cheese fries and it came out to cost me $99 agonist$100 the hell with foster freeze I hope it shuts down
It was definitely the Foster Freeze I remember from back In the day. The Food was good and My Milkshake "Peach" was awesome. The only thing that was different was the price, for 2 regular single patty cheese burgers, 2 small orders of fries, and 2 shakes. Granted the shakes were all that. The total was $46.00!!! So Sorry Foster Freeze as good as the service, the food, and the shakes were. IT WAS NOT WORTH $46.00!!!
Never will i go there again. Hamburger was so nasty i was expecting a good hamburger for $13 dollars it was a frozen hamburger patty that tasted like old frozen meat. The oriental lady was so disrespectful to the customers yelling out fowl language to a customer that asked for his money back after she took his food away from him and refused to refund his money. I would of been better off going to burger king or in n out for a good burger.. i will never go to this place again. Nasty nasty food.
I used to love fosters. Especially this particular establishment. I loved the customer service, the food everything. That is until our last visit. My family and I went, ordered 80.00 of food as usual when we go out. When we got to the tables they provide outside, they are completely dirty. That's alright, I can clean my own table, as we did. Then the food came. And in my sons hot dog is hair. Not those small white linen hairs, actual black human hair. My wife takes it back and the boy in the front is very apologetic, and they remake the hot dog. Needless to say he didn't even bother touching it. We wont be back.
I have been a fan of Foster's Freeze for over 40 years. Recently, I stopped in to get a burger and a vanilla Pepsi. I was incredibly disappointed. While the service was great and the vegetables on the burger were incredibly fresh and delicious, the patty itself was dry and thin. I wished I had gone to SuperBurger accross the street.
Paying $18 for cheeseburger, fries & med choc shake is not that inexpensive but, fine if your lunch is edible. The burger was a dry as a leather shoe, and nothings worse then over cooked fries!!!! Well… mine were way over cooked! :/ and it took forever. I can live with slow but, not gross food:(
I wish I could report the the charge on my card from this place a fraud because that's what they served us. We spent $40 on three size small burger meals and we all very passionatly feel that this was hands down the absolute worst burgers & fries that any of us has ever tasted in our entire lives. I'd rather eat hospital food. The only quality item this place has is their napkins. Try Ozzie's on Montecito Blvd or Carmen's Burger Bar in downtown Santa Rosa instead- it'll cost you the same or less, and I promise it will taste better than you could imagine in comparison to this place. I'm ashamed that I subjected my family's taste buds to this awful place.
10 bucks for a very small hot fudge sundae.
Went here after a few years, and the food quality is terrible. Even my son couldn't finish his burger and fries. This place was amazing a few years ago.
I love froster freeze and especially this location on 4th street because the 2main workers(Asian girl&Asian guy)Are so nice to me and they always remember me on my order to (2Large banana milkshakes with extra banana😉)but the reason I put a 1star is because today on November 8,2024 at 1:50pm I went to go buy 2 large banana milkshakes extra banana and it tasted just like vanilla. I didn’t taste the bananas at all and I went and asked her if she made sure she made bananas milkshakes and she said yes she did but she must of barley put any banana in it because it literally tasted like it was only a vanilla milkshake… so it made me upset because I defiantly didn’t want a vanilla milkshake but she said she made the banana milkshakes but she barley put any banana in it because me and my girlfriend both couldn’t taste the banana at all in both our milkshakes they both just tasted like vanilla… but either than this incident happening today I do love froster freeze the bananan milkshakes are the best when they are made right with enough bananas in it..
Used to be great 5 years ago, now it’s an overpriced shack with poor hygiene
Bought a Strawberry Sundae and a water bottle was charged $12.08 .... That's literally the amount for a meal. This was on September 27 and today September 29 woke up to an email from my bank , saying the amount was changed and it was now $13.08... Be careful if you pay with card they add charges days after purchase!!!!
Horrible ! Horrible ! HORRIBLE!! Absolutely WORST fast food ever. The picture makes it look larger but clearly it is a 1/5 lb burger with a tiny bun and cost $9.41. Fries were $4.50. Second child had just the tiny burger. Cost for two children under 6 years old was $24.94. For lunch? I just paid the bill on auto pilot but then added it up and realized I was over charged because sign said old fashioned burger (w/cheese) $6.99. Questioned why and people were downright rude insisting that they didn’t overcharge. Embarrassing that we brought the grandkids here for lunch. We have only gotten ice creams before and just paid the outrageous price because we were splurging to enjoy a treat. But, NEVER AGAIN. Place is a complete rip off. Told us the bathroom was closed, so kids couldn’t even wash hands. How do employees wash hands when they use it? Disgusting thought. And, inside room with tables was filthy with graffiti all over the walls. How could Health department allow this place to stay open? Don’t believe me. Stop by yourself for a firsthand view but plan to go somewhere else for lunch or dinner. ********************************************* 10/08/2024 NOTHING has changed my opinion but I was just reading the Press Democrat that Foster Freeze is celebrating its 75th anniversary. We’ve lived in Sonoma County for 49 years so it was long established before we arrived. VERY SAD that such an iconic place is now such a dump! Press Democrat should’ve done a little deeper dive for its readership. So much awesome food of every variety in Santa Rosa, so can’t see why they Hail a disgusting place like that. The people who visit there because of the article will get a revolting wake up call.
We stopped to get a smoothie and the lady gave us 2 ice creams in a bowl and then a root beer float. Vanilla ice cream tastes frost bitten and old and the bill was over $30 for something we didn't want. If they didn't have a smoothie tell my 82 year old grandma you don't have smoothies instead of giving her something else and not refunding her money. This place is over priced, horrible customer service and graffiti all over the sitting area. I wonder why there is a sign on the well known restroom door that says "no restrooms". This place has gone to crap we will never go back. The cook is in there eating food off there line like a barbarian snacking playing on her cell phone then with the same hands on her phone and in her mouth making up the order called back for a burger and fries. I can't! Absolutely disgusting. Glove up cook!
