We had a beautiful day at The Ram's Head Inn. We were there for Winterfest and it was great! They had a ton of activities for kids: cookie decorating, a hot chocolate station, s'mores, bird feeder making, sheep to feed, bocci, hammocks to chill in, tetherball, a letter- to- Santa writing station, then a tree lighting ceremony and Santa himself showed up. There was also a piano player in the bar playing Christmas music! It was a wonderful place to spend a whole day.

The inn itself is beautiful and comfortable; but what set the experience apart was Nicholas and his amazing staff. We wanted for nothing during our stay.

Amazing experience - the food, the ambiance, the location and more. Tucked away where you can watch the sunset while having dinner on the patio with live jazz music. Service was quick, food was delicious served in a good portion. Worth the money! They do need more bathroom stalls though.

An enchanting and beautiful place to spend time on our 22nd wedding anniversary marveling at natures wonders: the beaches are simply stunning. Take a kayak and enjoy the sights. The rooms are comfortable and nice and dinner. options are fantastic.

This is a little overdue but we had our wedding at the Ram’s Head inn last June and it was the better than anything we could have ever hoped for. Corinna and the staff bent over backwards to make sure we had the perfect wedding there. We’ll always cherish the day and the memories. The Inn is chic and cozy at the same time and the food was unparalleled. We will be visiting for years to come.

Absolutely the best place to stay on Shelter Island. The staff is wonderful, friendly and accommodating. The rooms are beautifully decorated in a very classic eastern Long Island style. Excellent food and drinks too! There is also an adorable beach with a small sailboat, kayaks and SUPs for guests.

There is something to be said about kindness and the Ram’s Head Inn is all about kindness. My son Christopher proposed to his love Alyssa on June 4th, 2022 at the gazebo at this quaint inn. The staff, Molly, Corrina, Dennis, Rebecca and everyone were unbelievably the best people to help in every possible way in making this special day even more special. The owner Aandrea Carter, is a wonderful person who emphasizes the fact that her staff is a team of wonderful people working together to make this place intimate and warm and charming,…and it sure is! It makes someone like me want to come back often. What a feeling. The rooms are beautiful, the food is delicious, the ambiance is great, the people are warm and friendly . I am a big believer of kindness and this beautiful inn is all about kindness. I love this place! And I love the people!

This was our 3rd weekend stay since they completed renovations last fall, and I’m happy to say that everything was wonderful. We’ve been coming in the “off season” to just get away from the craziness of the city, and between the beauty of the location and charm of the Inn, these have been incredibly restorative weekends. The rooms have always been clean, comfortable and relaxing, while the food in the restaurant has been superb and delicious. We thought we would try other local restaurants for dinner, but “fortunately”, after having difficulty making reservations, we stayed at the Inn and thoroughly enjoyed the chef’s creations, the roaring fireplace, and drinks at the beautiful bar. What was also so satisfying was the friendly and helpful staff, they remembered us each time, welcomed us back, and could not have been more accommodating. Our compliments to the new owner who clearly has a vision of keeping this place very special.

Food was delicious! They accommodated my moms food allergy with ease. Cocktails were tasty. We had the shrimp cocktail and hearts of palm salad for apps - everything was extremely fresh. There was both indoor and outdoor seating + a bar. Can't wait to come back!

This is a special place on a special island. It’s a 100 year old building. Each room is different and they don’t all have private baths. If that bothers you pay close attention to what you are doing when making reservations. My husband and I drove from NC to stay at this very special inn. There are no tv’s and you are tied off from the rest of the world. It was a beautiful, well kept property. The continental breakfast was simple and just enough. Dinner in the restaurant was perfection. We loved the island and the many people we talked to. We will forever cherish our time at Rams Head.

Great experience! Dinner was great. Staff was nice. Enjoyed the kayak and paddling boarding. Only thing I would say is that the room we had was very small for the expensive price we paid and the breakfast could of been a bigger selection than cereal and bread

My husband and I just got home from our fall getaway at Ramshead Inn. We love shelter island and are so happy we picked this place to stay. They treat you like family. From the hospitality desk with Rachel and Robert to our amazing waiter Tim and bartender Christa. The food and cocktails were top shelf and loved the ambience and decor. We could have sat by the fireplace all night. The grounds and views are top notch. Can’t wait to go back. Pete and Laura

We've been to the Inn several times for dinner. It's always wonderful! Good food and excellent service. My partner of 25 years and I are planning our wedding there in November. Catering and booking staff have been terrific to work with. We're so excited!

Very authentic building on a beautiful piece of property on Shelter Island. We arrived too early to be seated before dinner time on Easter Sunday, and instead of eating here, I wandered around the grounds and took some photos. The chef and his helper were resting outside as we walked back to our car. I told the chef that the smell in front of the building from all the good food he was making was fantastic; he smiled and said that it smelled pretty good from back there too. I laughed in agreement. Back again July 2020. We had brunch out on the patio. Masks and social distancing all around. Great food and tasty drinks. We will be back.

We had a lovey relaxing weekend at Ram's Head Inn. The room was clean and pretty and the staff very friendly. The food was very good and the grounds very nice. Very peaceful place. I love that there was no TV in our room. The hotel has clearly made a choice to keep things simple, classic, and low key. It is hard to strike a balance between low key and refined and they have done it. Just what we needed.

This review is a bit different… we never made it however when we do I can’t wait. My sister and I finally found a weekend that worked for a getaway. Due to unfortunate unforeseen circumstances we had to cancel. The front desk was beyond understanding and helpful to us according to all of the hotel policies etc. in fact from booking the actual room I was beyond pleased with the hospitality. Everyone was so enthusiastic patient and answered all of our questions. Customer service is hard to come by these days and although this didn’t work out I really look forward to rebooking our stay

We didn't stay here - to start with But we did bike here to have brunch ( delicious meal ! esp the Benedicts) and hang, and then the next day took a yoga class with a really kind, learned yoga instructor. The property is so gorgeous and the entire staff is very kind. Ram Island is such a stunning secret oasis - I would love to stay here during our next trip!

This is a review of the events portion of the Inn. Corinna is the events organizer and I cannot say enough nice things about her. She is highly organized and extremely calm. Her attention to detail was beyond what I have ever experienced. From the start she communicated well and clearly and planned for everything including every weather possibility. I highly recommend Corinna for any gathering, large or small.

Cheerful staff were always present 'in background' to assist if needed, but the overall vibe of the Inn focuses on self-reliance in guests. Coffee available to early risers like ourselves is a valuable plus. First floor / common areas are uncommon! The brilliance of the decor refresh is still fresh. Thoughtful breakfast offered something for everyone, with an emphasis on healthy -- we enjoyed the date-nut (?) bread especially. We had the best room of the Inn -- Room #1 with balcony overlooking Coecles Harbor. Everything stated on Aandrea Carter's web site proved true. I wish the new management the best. Note: Some bathroom fixtures and hardware -- once updated -- will close the circuit on overall exceptional excellence.

Ram's head was fantastic. The food was so delicious and prepared just right. We had fresh oysters to start and for the main course we had the stripe bass with ratatouille and the steak teaurnados which is a filet Mignon. The food is the best on the island. Our server Alan was even better! He had great recommendations, a great personality and all around very pleasant!! thanks for the great experience!

Amazing as always! Stayed here for Valentines day eve. Every aspect was perfect and the dinner and lounge singers were incredible! One of the best duck dishes I ever had.

Well, I suppose every story needs a villain, and in this one, “no WiFi” and “a red lounger from The Shining” seem to have stolen the spotlight. As someone who’s been to The Ram’s Head Inn more times than I can count, I can confidently say this isn’t a scene from a horror movie — unless your personal nightmare involves award-winning food, sunsets over the water, and live jazz under the stars. Yes, it’s an inn, not a Marriott (mercifully). The WiFi may take the occasional nap, but that’s half the charm — it forces you to look up and realize where you actually are. The “overpriced stew” you mention — I’m fairly sure that was the short rib bourguignon, which most of us consider one of the highlights of the menu. As for the owner, I’ve seen them everywhere — greeting guests, checking on tables, carrying trays, and yes, sometimes even grabbing a bite with friends. That’s called being human, not inattentive. Some of us come here precisely to escape the corporate sameness and rediscover what hospitality actually feels like — warm, personal, and a little bit timeless. So while you were counting the hours to leave, I was counting the waves hitting the shore, glass in hand, thinking how lucky I was to be right where I was.

What a special place! Had a wonderful stay at Rams Head Inn - the decor and service was perfect. The wine list was fun and Nick, the GM, was so hospitable! Would definitely go back.

Beautiful property on the water on Shelter Island. Rooms are small but they’re very clean and updated. The Manager Nick & the team were very attentive and helpful. Would happily come back and stay again

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Ram’s Head Inn is a true Shelter Island gem—peaceful, elegant, and full of charm. From the waterfront views to the welcoming staff and elevated seasonal menu, every visit feels like a retreat. As a local real estate professional, I often recommend it to clients seeking a refined yet relaxed East End experience. A beautiful destination that perfectly captures the essence of Shelter Island. — Cassandra Leggio, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson Curating Legacy, Refining Worlds

Nick, the manager makes his place feel like home. Listen to his recommendations, you will not be disappointed. Everyone else who works there is truly a delight. I'm just terrible with names otherwise I'd name them all.

We didn’t stay at the hotel, just came for dinner before The Perlman Music Program. The food was very good, the service was not so great. Atmosphere was lovely.

Very nice stay here. Incredible vibe in the evening especially with the lively restaurant and bar. The house itself is beautiful and the walk down to the private beach is wonderful. Disappointment in a few areas though - the electrical socket in the bathroom didn’t work and it took them two tries to fix it. The continental breakfast was exceptionally poor with inedible croissants so the only real options were yogurt and cereal. The hot water heater pot took way too long to boil - they should have a better way to provide hot water for tea - plus the coffee was terrible the first morning. There was a dog in a nearby room barking all night which gave me bad dreams. These places should not allow dogs unless they can be in a separate building.

Dinner was eaten outdoors on a beautiful patio. The food was quite good and the service professional. Afterwards we relaxed on the great lawn by the water. Our rooms were pretty and clean. Breakfast was also lovely. This year will be our third return trip.

Even if you're not staying at the inn you should pop in for a drink. It's a beautiful spot. You can sit on the lawn and take in the view and admire the pet sheep. I would love to see a more varied cocktail menu. My Bees Knees cocktail was a bit short on that Bees. It definitely needed more honey to balance it. My friend's enjoyed their RHI 75 cocktails.

The Ram's Head Inn location is fantastic and the 'backyard' grounds are really nice/comfortable with beautiful water views. It was nostalgia that brought my wife and I to stay here, him having spent youthful summers on the North Fork. The staff were all very sweet and accommodating. The bedroom was an adequate size given the age of hotel, however, the in-room bathroom left a lot to be desired. It's small, extremely dated and in need of repair/replacement items, with very poor shower water pressure. The morning's included breakfast was delightful with very nice touches, but while we enjoyed our dinner, it was overpriced compared to the quality/portion at countless other local restaurants. Similarly, the room rate price was high for what you get, and it was a bit ridiculous to be charged an additional $40 for 1 hour of pickleball played on a concrete slab 'court' marked by torn/worn painter's tape.

Ive been here a couple times. First, Id like to commend the service at ram’s head inn. Our servers at the restaurant were phenomenal, starting from our host jimmy and the tall lady at the front. We were then served by a waitress who gave us the wine for free “due to the wait” (there was absolutely no wait, she was very attentive). Food is OK. Did not like the base of my main course. But the service def deserves 5 stars However, i give this place 3 stars due to the dock out back and its path. The path to the dock on grass has very very dim lights even at night and most guests i observed had to bring out their phone flash light. The lights on the dock itself are pretty clear though. However, the grass path TO the dock with little tiny lights in the ground that dont help much. This wouldn’t be such a big deal if there wasnt poison ivy all over the path!!! The first time i came here, my legs flared up and it looked like i had just gotten back from summer camp.. upon coming back last night, my legs started itching again even though i was being very careful as i had learned my lesson from last time. Please ram’s head put in more lights on the pathway to the dock and GET RID OF THEM POISON IVY!!! It definitely contributes to the customer experience. Also put some doggone dock cleats on ur dock…

Love the place to death, but don't try to plan a wedding here, it will be very difficult to arrange and cost more than you can imagine. Too bad, we would have loved to do that. We love the food on the outdoor terrace, and the bar is lots of fun, but not intended for a young crowd, which is fine with me. The grounds have an old fashioned feel and you can use the Sunfish or paddleboards... whatever you want. Relaxed.

Lovely setting, good food, but incompetent service. Our dinners arrived before anyone ever asked if we wanted wine. Sure, we had cocktails, but we kept the wine list in order to have wine with dinner. The cabernet had been refrigerated and was too cold. We'd been there before. The food is always good, but the service needs to improve.

First I have to say that the food in the restaurant is fabulous and the people who work here are friendly, accommodating and professional. The common areas of the main floor are lovely. The setting is spectacular . So why two stars? The inn is tired and in disrepair but they still charge 5 star prices. We paid almost $600 for one night. The room was small, the furniture and mirrors rickety and worn and the bathroom had enough mold in the shower to cause me to wear flip-flops. It was more like accommodations in a roadside motel than an upscale inn. The rooms, especially the bathrooms need serious renovations .

Sadly, the Ram's Head Inn was disappointing! The location of the Inn on Shelter Island is amazing, but that's about all your being over charged for! The outside of the inn is charming, wonderful landscape and plenty of Adirondack chairs and ocean views, but, I paid over $500 for a 1 nite stay in a two bedroom suite with a shared bath. Yes,the inn may be hisyoric but the owners need to fo more to maintain the interior. Not worth the price of the stay.In addition the meals are way over priced...more than $200 for dinner for only 2 people. Mind you, my stay was after season. I think the proprietors are just resting on their laurels with this place. Thet reall need to upgrade and redecorate the interior.

Just went for a dinner. Have always admired Rams Head beauty and history. Enjoyed dining on the porch however our party of four found the food to be mediocre. My pasta dish was sitting on a bed of overly salted mushrooms and overall flavor of pasta was disappointing. The desserts were also pretty mediocre. The profiteroles were not classic with a chocolate sauce made with heavy cream and so indulgent-instead we got a taste of overipe banana!. :-( Here's hoping next season will bring a chef who dazzles the diners.

Came for dinner one night. It was a three course meal and each course was slow to come out which is strange since they should have plenty of time in advance. I had the pasta bolognese, it had Wagyu beef, which clearly didn’t add to the ragu. I also was able to have both desserts which were both too sweet, one of which came from a box and was terrible (brownie).

A Disappointing Stay at Ram’s Head Inn – Overpriced and Underwhelming Ram’s Head Inn boasts a picturesque setting and a reputation for elegance, but my recent stay fell far short of expectations—especially for the exorbitant price of over $400 per night. While the ambiance and location are undeniably charming, the accommodations left much to be desired. Most shocking was the discovery that my room’s bathroom had to be shared with another guest room. At this price point, a private en-suite bathroom should be a given, not a luxury withheld. The inconvenience of coordinating with strangers for basic amenities was both awkward and unacceptable for a supposedly high-end establishment. For a fraction of the cost, one could book a luxury hotel with far superior privacy and amenities. The lack of attention to this fundamental detail makes it difficult to justify the premium pricing. While the staff was courteous and the setting lovely, these positives cannot compensate for such a glaring oversight in comfort and convenience. Ram’s Head Inn has potential, but until they address these basic expectations of luxury, I cannot recommend it to discerning travelers. A truly elegant experience should never come with shared bathrooms at $400 a night.

We have been going to the rams head inn for 8 years and have never ever experienced such horrible service. We had a massive party of about 15 people and a few children. We were seated at 7pm and as soon as the waitress saw how many people her eyes lit up with $$. We ordered drinks and children’s food and bread as soon as we saw the waitress. After a long wait, we still only had our drinks no bread no food after we had asked the waitress multiple times where the appetizer and children’s food was (chicken fingers) and she proceeded to tell us she had forgot to put in the order and would handle it. After over an hour and 20 minutes we had no BREAD or children’s food we decided we were not staying for food because of how poor the service. The service was horrible and we are extremely disappointed that this happened after 8 years . We were left there with no food, horrible service and starving children!! Will not be recommending this to anyone!!

The Ram's Head Inn is a perfect example of an Inn with everything at it's fingertips, with no idea how to treat its customers. While the grounds and Inn itself are beautiful, I was quite disappointed at the level of service for the rate of over $550 per night. Not only was our room incredibly cramped and small (lacking basic equipment such as hair dryers, iron, etc.), and the service at the restaurant for dinner was painfully slow and inattentive, but the one thing an Inn of this caliber which claims it has free breakfast should provide - a hot, homemade breakfast, was not provided. The cheap, cold bites and Keurig coffee was not a welcoming sight. They clearly wanted us to wait until 11am to buy breakfast from their sub-par, overpriced restaurant. Additionally, the woman behind the counter had an attitude. The whole time I was there, I felt as though I was burdening them by my presence. Save yourself the anguish and don't stay here!

Beautiful location, but it’s apparent that management has changed in recent years. Restaurant is a MAJOR disappointment. Very expensive for the product / service delivered. I will never return unless ownership and/or chef changes.

J
Julia A Lindau

We are extremely disappointed with our stay and would never go back. In addition to subpar amenities, the service was rude and unhelpful. We paid extra for a nice room for a special occasion. It was so small we couldn't even wash our face in the tiny sink and the shower has no ledge to even put a bar of soap. The shower door was broken so every time we used it water covered the bathroom floor. The room was essentially the bed, with no extra space. I am 8 months pregnant and needed to do some exercises. I asked for access to the wellness center because there was no space in the room, and was told no. Then, we arrived to the breakfast that ends at 10 at 930 one morning and there was no coffee left... when we asked for more the woman said no, just use the Keurig. Both nights we dined at The Rams Head, our appetizers came out before our drinks and the second night we had to remind our server to bring them at all. If our stay had been a third of the price, we probably would have given four stars because that is the value of the service we got. But this place is just so overpriced. It was a real bummer.

The Rams Head Inn ruined our Mother’s Day. We received no food other than bread after 2.5 hours of waiting. It was clear all the other guests in the restaurant were having a terrible experience. Upon leaving another family asked if we had a similar experience. We told them we never got our food. They said “you’re lucky”

I

Location is beautiful. I couldn’t sleep didn’t get WiFi on ck in extremely disappointed in room. Sorry stay at a Marriot not worth the money. Atmospher is nice but food was much to be desired. The owner was at end with a gentleman eating and wasn’t pleasant. To me if you own a quaint inn you work it. My bf took me here thinking it would be nice let’s just say from a female standpoint I would avoid. Unless you want to sit in a horrible read Lounger in a shining novel. This could be a good nice place but now it needs alot of work and an attentive owner. A guest shouldn’t be left with no wi fi. I’m counting the hours I can get out of here so that sad if that explains it. Avoid.

Went for a birthday dinner. Awful experience. The owner cared more about entertaining her friends and her own dining experience rather than making sure the patrons were taken care of. Long wait for food. Bad food. High prices. Go elsewhere.

M
Michael Smith

Terrible experience. We reserved a two bedroom suite and stayed in rooms 2 - 3. The rates were very high, though comparable for peak season on Shelter Island. However, the room and service were some of the worst we ever experienced. Problems included: 1. No AC: You need to request the AC setting from the front desk. However, it never went on. 2. Room Full of Flies: Upon check-in, the room had at least 20 flies. 3. Window Screens with Holes: Since there was no AC, we opened the windows. All of the screens were very old and full of holes. Most likely the source of continuous flies. 4. No housekeeping: We did not get housekeeping. Front desk women claimed it was a “communication” error. However, they offered no apology. 5. Barely Usable Shower: They water pressure is so low, its hard to wash off soap. 6. Gross breakfast: The “continental breakfast” was nothing more than a Kuerig machine, yogurt and milk. 7. Terrible Service: We knew that this was an old lodge and were not expecting five star accommodations. But no AC, no housekeeping, tons of flies, etc. while still charging so much money felt like we were being ripped off. The front desk woman was dismissive, never followed-up and claimed that the owner would “call us” to discuss. No one ever followed up. We like the property for evening drinks, but would never stay here again.

K
Kseniia

Terrible experience.Despite all the beauty of the location and the beautiful nature around, this place is not worth the money you pay for a night there. We had an unpleasant moment when, having checked into the room, we went for a walk, and in the evening we wanted to change clothes and take a shower, and there were already other people’s things in the room. The number of rooms there is very small and I have never seen such a mess with check-in even at large resorts. Just remember that when receiving the keys to the room, someone else can also get them and you cannot leave valuables in the room.
