A dining experience like few others. Extravagant food and delightful service - couldn’t recommend this place highly enough.
I ordered a duck confit tortellini. I really like that they used duck instead of chicken. The noodle, however, should be a little bit softer.
Wonderful spot. Great food, amazing staff, an absolute joy to visit.
The wife suggested it, and Prix fixe with wine pairing did not disappoint.
What a great place. Different than others, not what you'd expect from a new brewery. Lots of different styles leaning on English. ones. Plenty of meat pies, very tasty. Super coz spot, plenty of parking across the street. Amazing staff and cool ownership. Definitely a gem to be visited time after time
I loved every. single. bite. The care was in every detail- the texture of the pasta, the complexity/ plating of each dish, and the quiet elegance of the interior design. The portion sizes were perfect. The wine I paired with my meal was delightful. Even the dessert impressed. I had the a glass of pino noir to drink, the squash raviolis for my main, and split the chocolate mousse for dessert. This is the kind of place I am always looking for- unassuming, thoughtful, and absolutely delicious. Keep up the great work! I'll be back soon!
What an absolute neighborhood gem. Wonderful space/ambience. Staff is over the top with courtesy and knowledge. Food was timed perfectly despite being there on a Saturday at peak time. The kitchen had it all under control and the servers made sure everything got where it was going on time. Speaking of the food...WOW....such a unique menu and very blatantly designed by a chef with years of education and experience. Each dish was a combination of opposing flavors which came together to create a perfect harmony. You don't create these type of dishes by chance...there is some serious skill in the kitchen at Fat Hen. Wine list was superb, signature cocktails looked amazing but the wine list honestly spoke to clearly to my heart that I had to opt for a paired four course dinner. I was not disappointed. Rib eye and the scallop crudo stood out, but it was all simply decadent. 10/10 will be back.
We had an AMAZING dinner here. Definitely recommend doing the chefs choice. Every single dish was explained to us by the chef who obviously put a lot of time and thought into the dishes. We both agreed that this was one of the best meals we've probably ever had. Certainly will be coming back.
Amazing restaurant! We came for our 10 year Anniversary and it did not disappoint! We got 4 appetizers and I kid you not they were all home runs. The entrees we got were also amazing. A must must try spot in the area. Highly recommend!
Good food. Ingredients are fresh and dishes are tasteful. Atmosphere was quite and classy. Service was good. Space is shared with la Brasa. Prices were fine given the quality of food. Probably one of the best restaurants in Somerville. Will go again.
I have to be honest, when I first saw the menu, I thought there were limited amount of items I could eat. Then I was told to give it a shot. We selected the 4 course option and asked them to pair the wine. The food was unbelievable. The selection of wine was outstanding. Above all, the staff is phenomenal. Our server had tons of positive energy. He presented everything to us that would make a seasoned advertising agent jealous. It was so obvious that he loves what he does. I highly recommend everyone to go and try this place out.
I would give them 10 stars if I could! It was my first time truly enjoying a full meal since developing my many food allergies and the staff did everything in their power to provide me with the most scrumptious mocktails, starters and mains!! It was SO good and we loved the vibes! My new go to dinner spot.
Everything we had was absolutely delicious and they have an excellent wine list. We had burrata, beef tartare, gemelli alla wild mushroom, and bucatini alla carbonara. Highly recommend for a date night or bringing your friends and family.
Incredible food and great service! Ordered the chef's whim and thoroughly enjoyed every course. He came out to tell us about each plate and the timing between them was perfect. Would definitely recommend!
Small menu of great homemade pastas and entrees. Everything we had was excellent, including the cocktails, bread and espresso. You can't really go wrong with any of the pastas. Place is small, but has a nice ambiance.
Our server Sarah provided five star service, was knowledgeable about the menu, wine selection, and was able to make great recommendations. We had the prime rib and short rib, both were delicious!
Absolutely delicious!! Four of us went and all got the prix fixe menu. This option allows you to choose from among all of the choices for each course so we all ended up ordering different items. Everything was excellent. I had the stuffed mushrooms (the chanterelles were delicious!), the tagliatelle with cauliflower and chickpeas, and grilled salmon. The sommelier knew her wines and was very interesting to talk to - her recommendation was spot on. Can't wait to go back!
Food was great! The pork shank appetizer was especially good! Place was very quiet. Small place with maybe 10 tables. Great for a date night.
What an amazing place. Our chef Ryan was fantastic. We did the chef's tasting menu, highly recommend it, which was also tailored to my wife's dietary restrictions perfectly and consideratly. This is a great place for micro Italian cuisine.
Great place for a special meal. Five course tasting menu was a memorable experience. The dining room is very small, with a spare, modern feel. Service was good and the reservations help from Kelly was excellent. I am eager go back.
Exceptional meal. I highly recommend the tasting menus. Everything we tried was so delicious and they do not skimp on the portions. you won't walk out feeling like a fat hen but you get the exact right amount to feel satisfied and like you got a good value. the 4 course menu at $55 dollars is by far the best deal. I recommend the Risotto, Croquettes, and scallops. Foie gras was the only thing that we found to be only okay (still good by any standards, but not amazing)
Such a wonderful restaurant and the food and the wine was amazing. There are very few upscale less traditional Italian restaurants in and around Boston but this will now enter the rotation of places I will go regularly. The pastas were amazing and the service was beyond impeccable. I recommend the chefs course, which was a small dish provided by the chef made uniquely that day. Overall an amazing experience and will definitely be back again!
My husband and I wanted to do something different and special for his mother for Mother's Day. She did the 3 course mother's day dinner and my husband and I did the 4 course. The food for each course was delicious. Mom thought everything she had was great and it was dishes she hasn't had before. We definitely want to go back.
Really awesome atmosphere, great food and wine list, super lovely staff. We got there 3 minutes before the kitchen closed at 930 (we were late for our reservation) and they still sat us, and were super nice about the whole thing. Can’t wait to go back!
Some of the finest dining in Somerville! Every course was a delight. Try the pre fix and you will find new favorites. Their wine pairing perfectly match every course
Ate at Fat Hen yesterday with a friend. We utilized a City Gilt certificate for a 4 course and a wine pairing. We had the best meal! Everything was delicious and the wines were well paired with the food. Service was also impeccable! Thank you for a memorable meal!
Had a perfect night out with a friend here. We loved the chic decor and there were so many things on the menu we were excited to try. The Milanese pork was outstanding !! It’s a must. Great cocktails too. Will be coming back!
My husband and I have been to Fat Hen twice (even years apart) and had a fantastic experience both times with delicious meals and superb, personalized service. I recommend the “Chefs Table” experience which comes with an off menu dish selected by the chef. We had mussels and pasta - perfection. Highly recommend.
Small cute restaurant with a short but delicious dinner. The tortellini in brodo was to die for! Good service too!
Date night at Fat Hen was wonderful! The atmosphere is intimate and stylish. Food and drinks were delicious from start to finish. The waitstaff was attentive, speedy, and friendly. Would definitely recommend/come back.
Really nice place to eat. The octopus starter was good but the burrata crostini was a bit smoky. The gnocchi was very good and we liked the actual pasta a lot, the sauce on the pasta course was good but not great. Our favorite part of the meal was the entrees. The bass was excellent and was served over an awesome pea salad dish. The steak was also fabulous and came with these amazing fried potato gratin cube things, they were really awesome. We got two desserts, blackberry panna Cotta was not good. The actual panna cotta was bland and completely overwhelmed by a champagne topping. The white chocolate semifredo with strawberry gelato was incredible!!!! One of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time. Really great service and all around really nice experience.
Delicious appetizers Mains were hit or miss - the rigatoni was way too salt - the tortellini with duck was ok - the pasta with shrimp was delicious Unfortunately despite their airco being on it was uncomfortably hot Staf was kind and doing a great job especially since it was sooo hot
The food at Fat Hen is delicious, well-balanced and offers a great variety. It's also paired with exceptional service and attention to detail. Having said that I would not call this an Italian restaurant. I came wanting to try the gnocchi and ended up going with the chef's whim 6 course tasting menu, but requested the gnocchi as one of the courses. Having the chef deliver and describe each of his creations shows his passion for the food. The meal started with smoked bluefish which was delicate and presented perfectly. The next course was hamachi crudo which was my second favorite with a balanced sweetness from Meyer lemons and a surprise with the inclusion of chili oil. This was followed by foie gras which was a little salty until mixed with the quince and cocoa. The potato gnocchi was my favorite and worth waiting for. This dish was a contrast in textures and deep flavors. The rainbow trout was tender with a crispy skin and as much as I like bacon, it felt unnecessary. I was excited to try the NY strip steak which was cooked sous vide and then seared. While it was cooked well, it was missing the deep sear I prefer in a steak. The meal was completed with baked doughnuts which were delicious. It feels like the restaurant and chef are using different influences and techniques to showcase their food, but are still trying to find a true identity. They have a small, cozy interior except for the large plate glass on one wall where the fluorescent street lights shine through. Overall it was a very good experience and I look forward to returning and experiencing more of their ever changing menu.
Food was really good, but with any special kick which would attract me to come back for sure. Not having beer on tap was a disappointment. The best of menu were desserts. Both chocolate cake with tomatillo marmelade and whipped cream and tres leches were absolutely amazing. It was quite loud, difficult to have a conversation at the table, but not a big deal.
We had a lovely Valentine's dinner here with a pre-fixed course menu. First few courses were really delicious. I found the main course (chicken) tender and juicy but was less impressed compared you the other courses. Dessert was delicious
I had a great experience at Fat Hen. The waitstaff was attentive and the atmosphere was quiet and relaxed. I ordered the shrimp gnocchi, which was perfectly creamy and enough to fill me up without being too much. I have nothing bad to say about the gnocchi--I simply believe that it was a basic, and small, dish for the high price point of $29. For dessert, I ordered the pistachio cake topped with grapefruit and vanilla ice cream to-go. Even as a takeout dish it was delicious, so I imagine it would have been outstanding if I ate it at the restaurant. The cake had a moist, bouncy texture; its richness nicely balanced out with the refreshing grapefruit on top. I would highly recommend Fat Hen as a nice and quiet date night spot.
Food was delicious - ordered the lamb belly and funghi pasta and loved both dishes. Only issue was the pasta came out long after the lamb so we were watching each other eat. On a busy night I would understand but we were the only ones in the restaurant.
This place is kind of meh to be honest. It's not bad but it isn't great. I had the bolognese and it tasted more like taco chili and my date had the wild mushroom linguine which was actually quite good. The atmosphere was a bit odd being it just feels like an extension of La Brassa. You have to cut through the much larger sister restaurant to find the restroom. The one big question I had was why is the place called fat hen and has a logo font that looks like a waffle pattern but this is a fine Italian place with I think only one chicken dish. It made me think this place was supposed to be a chicken and waffle joint and they changed their mind on the product last minute.
My girlfriend and I went to the Fat Hen over the weekend, after I had seen good reviews and been intrigued by the menu. We had very differing experiences. Her first course was a ravioli that tasted amazing but consisted of only 4 tiny raviolis for $17. Her second course centered around a steak, which they did not ask her how she wanted it prepared and it came out very rare. We took that to go and I grilled it more (to medium) and it tasted very good. I had the rabbit gnocci and the braised short ribs. Both tasted excellent and I had no complaints. I also had a Negroni cocktail which was amazing. 3 stars is a mix of mine and my girlfriends experiences.
Meh. Definitely don’t get the ribeye—it tasted like an unfiltered cigarette. The ceviche is great and the pasta is pretty okay. The ambiance is nice but the glassware and silverware was dirty! The waiter gave me an uncomfortable amount of eye contact and not in the attentive way that nice restaurant waiters do. Not at all worth the price.
Decent food but it felt like it was secondary to branding and atmosphere. Some small details that felt like misses. Thiiick and crunchy crostinis on apps, no starch on the protein mains, bad sear on the swordfish. I'm picking on pretty small things here about the food, but if you're gonna do the whole small menu, cool vibe, wood fired grill thing, I'm gonna be nit-picky about the details. Sever dropped a crostini on the table placing apps, food was auctioned off (waitstaff didn't know who ordered what and just called out food). The one in our party who asked for a to go box was handed it instead of taking the food back and putting it in for them. None of these are major things on they're own, but as a whole they drag down the experience, and at this price point trying to do this model foh details matter a LOT. Music was very loud for an empty space, we were the only ones in our area, and had a ringing sound similar to that of tinnitus that cut through the bumping bass of the reggaeton. Is this a small plates Italian fine dining spot? Because if so the vibe was completely wrecked by the music. Was it bad? Absolutely not. It was a very solid meal with well thought out and fairly well executed dishes, but all of these seemingly small details taken as a whole take what could be a really amazing experience and make it just okay.
We went to Fat Hen pre-covid and they offered a wonderful four course meal. I decided to revisit for a special occasion. The doors were locked at 5:06 despite our reservation at 5 pm. Odd. We signed up for the chef’s experience, which over the phone was mentioned as a way for the chef to offer dishes they were experimenting with as extras. There was nothing offered during our experience that was extra and nothing made mention of the fact that it was the chef’s experience. No chef came to speak to us. The beet salad was a pile of beets and dressed, Mediterranean style greens. It lacked brightness due to lack of acid and the plating could be improved. There was no additional herbs or garnish. Just pistachios, beets, greens and goat cheese. The flavors were very muddied. We received a bucatini carbonara that I had been looking forward too. It was extremely salty. My husband remarked that it was like a can of concentrated campbell’s soup. The pasta was not cooked enough, even by al dente standards. When we mentioned it to the server she said that since we already ate so much of it she wasn’t gonna do anything abt it. But there wasn’t even an apology or discount. The steak was alright. But there was a large pat of anchovy butter on top that was rock solid- a pat of butter 3 inches wide and half inch tall which was very large - usually maitre’d butter is softened but this looked like it was straight from the freezer. It was very tough to spread and also made the steak taste worse. They also forgot to put the uni on top until I flagged that it was missing. There was also a small bristle I found… like something off of a brush. Overall one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a while. Not sure what happened to this restaurant. Would not recommend.
I struggled with writing this review. I have worked in the industry for over 15 years and I know how reviews effect restaurants and staff. I want to start by saying the service was excellent. The plating was beautiful. The atmosphere is stylish and photogenic. The drinks were delicious. Unfortunately the food was a huge miss for us. The beet dish we ordered was so cumin heavy (an ingredient not listen on the menu and powerful even in small doses) that we couldn’t eat even half of it, and we both love beets and cumin. Both pasta dishes were way over cooked and water logged. I make fresh pasta at home, I have traveled in Italy, this is not a case of mistaken texture, the pasta was just way over cooked. One of the dishes was a mushroom pasta that was suppose to contain chanterelle and hen of the woods mushrooms, it was obvious that there were other types of mushrooms in there and not very clear if either of the aforementioned mushrooms were involved at all, it seemed unlikely. The sorbet we ordered was not a sorbet at all, it was more of a granita, completely different texture and experience. The nearly 60$ short rib entree was over cooked and dry with the most flavorless polenta, I can only explain it as being so flavorless it was sucking the flavor out of my mouth, like eating paper machete mash. To top it all off out of the 5 plates that came to our table 2 of them had visible dried food on them, dirty and not well washed. It was the kind of total failure food experience that makes it impossible to even say anything to the server. This meal cost over 250$ with tip. Very very disappointing for a restaurant rated so highly on this platform. As with any experience of this kind I want to believe it was an off night but I felt the need to warn off fellow food lovers who would have noticed these issues and been equally bamboozled by the reviews.
Overall the food was OK, beef tartar was good, pasta entrees were OK, but why I’m writing this review - the service was horrendous. We arrived on time for our reservation & seated quickly, our waitress asked us if we wanted water, then returned 15 min later asking for drinks, no water. And this is the start; plates were *no exaggeration* thrown on the table, almost dropped. I don’t expect Michelin star treatment, but i do expect to be treated like I’m a customer, rather than like I don’t exist. If I owned this business I would want to know that my employees are doing it a disservice.
We recently had dinner at Fat Hen during an evening that was warm outside. It was uncomfortably warm in the restaurant. We tried to address the issue with the staff. The home made pasta was delicious, but the atmosphere was horrible because it was sickly warm in the restaurant. We were very disappointed that the owner dismissed our poor experience.
Do not waste your time or money here! I made a reservation six weeks in advance to celebrate my daughter's college graduation. We were all excited to enjoy FatHen. Two weeks prior to our reservation we were informed that FatHen would only offer us a 4 course tasting menu at $100/p.p. and no option for alacarte, due graduation season. After a quick phone call with the front of house staff at FatHen I was informed that they normally offer a 4 course tasting menu at $75/p.p. along with an ala carte option. FatHen's dramatic price increase and lack of flexibility smacks of price gouging. While we likely would have spent more than ~100p.p. at the celebration we are so turned off to the restaurant that we will not dine there - regrettable because the menu looks quite good - as we can't support this type of behavior. After four wonderful and expensive years supporting a college student this is absolutely the wrong way to treat a celebrating family and guest of your restaurant.
With the name Fat Hen, you'd expect to find the menu dominated by fowl, but this place only serves the most mundane dishes you'd expect in an Italian restaurant. At 5pm, my date and I were the only customers and remained so for the hour plus we were there. The tableware were smeared and greasy, the walls were scored and marked up, and the overloud ambience music could have been assembled by a 17 year old in the year 1993. We had the wild mushrooom gemelli and the bolognese. The gemelli was very mushroomy, and that is really all that can be said about it. It was essentially a handful of what must be VERY expensive mushrooms added to some high class macaroni and cheese. The bolognese was truly disappointing, tasting predominately of taco-seasoning and with a tooth not unlike the meat used at Taco Bell. Both pasta dishes were smaller than you'd find at any true self-respecting Italian joint, and both were easily composed of ingredients costing in total less than 1/30th the cost of the dish. Don't bother.
I had read good reviews about this restaurant and was excited to try it. We ordered the cacio e Pepe angel hair pasta and the wild mushroom gemelli to go. Each dish was 24-26$. The servings were tiny to the extent where it seemed like they had given us someone’s leftover. We ended up getting food from another restaurant afterwards. The pastas were dry and had no flavor at all. We were so disappointed. This was a rip off. I don’t know if dining in would have been a better experience, but I otherwise do not recommend this place.
By far the shittiest experience I've ever had at a restaurant, to call it a restaurant is really over stating it since we never got served food. We had a reservation for 7:30, arrived on time and were told our table was not yet ready and would be in 15 minute, on its own not a but deal. Jump to one hour later and we still are not sat, and the hostess can provide no information on when or if a table will become ready. We accept a seat at the bar of the connected sister restaurant la brasa and order food. Over 1.5 hours later and we still do not receive any food. Completely incompetent restaurant management, they were clearly dramatically understaffed and overbooked at the same time. I don't blame the frontline staff at all but clearly the owners are either incompetent, greedy or most likely both. Absolutely terrible experience, 0/10, don't give them your money.
I would love to say that this was a good experience, but the overall situation that transpired from going to this restaurant has left such a bad taste in my mouth I cannot recommend this place to absolutely anyone! I went to dinner with a friend last Friday and I covered the meal, but I did not leave the tip on my credit card. And thank goodness immediately after I left the restaurant I made a payment for the exact amount of the dinner. I decided to check my card statement this evening and see an additional 20% was charged to my card. THIS IS LITERALLY THEFT! It concerns me to think how many other people potentially go to this restaurant swipe their cards and if the staff doesn’t like how much they’re getting tipped, they just decide to take it upon themselves to charge people additionally and think people won’t notice or check their bank statements. This restaurant literally steals people’s money and should be investigated at the very least if not shut down altogether! This experience raises so many concerns and shows levels of dishonesty. I wrote the total for the dinner without tip on the line of the receipt where it says total which means somebody had to cross out what I wrote and add an additional amount on the tip line in order for this to happen. If this happened to me I can only imagine how many other people this has happened to and they didn’t notice. I REPEAT DON’T EAT HERE UNLESS YOU’RE TRYING TO GET ROBBED OF YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!
