I came in here with average expectations and was surprised to meet the best bartender with a great selection of spirits and cocktails, and even better food! Steaks you can cut with your FORK! And flavor profiles that will blow you away…rustic and ridiculously amazing. What the heck are they doing in Stephenville, TX??

This was our 4th visit and again knocked our socks off!!! Undeniably the best filet I’ve ever had and consistently great every time. Cooked to perfection. The sides are equally incredible and super fresh. The service is top notch. The owners are amazing and very attentive. This is a place you get a high quality meal and an experience that will keep you coming back. Not only did we have dinner last night we just couldn’t get enough so we went back today for brunch. We live in the Dallas area and do not mind the 1.5-2 hour travel time to visit this place. If you’ve not been, you’re missing out!!!!

Great food, great service, and great experience! This was our first time and everyone was super accommodating! The server suggested the cheese appetizer and it was better than I could have imagined! We enjoyed the filet for our main dish, which was cooked perfectly, and honestly the best steak we’ve ever eaten! It was tender, perfectly seasoned, and a generous portion. The dessert was a chocolate cake that had us drooling! When we got the bill we were actually pleasantly surprised! We typically share a meal and for what we got (2 alcohol drinks, appetizer, steak meal, and dessert) we felt is was very reasonable. I’m glad I didn’t read any of the bad reviews before coming, it may have scared me away from one of the best meals we’ve had lately. So ignore those reviews and try this nice, upscale, local restaurant. For an additional bonus we got to meet the owner and chatted for a moment, he’s a super nice guy! We’re looking forward to coming back again, and bringing our friends!

Edit 2026-01-32 Back in. For breakfast. Still amazing! ************ Edit 2025-08-24 Stopped back in for Burger and a Beer night. Amazing as usual. Wife had the Green Chili Burger, and I had a cheese burger with jalapeños, and green and red hatch chili's. *************** Edit 2025-08-21 Decided to try the filet tonight. Got a filet on gnocchi with green chili alfredo sauce. And they did not disappoint with the seasoning and spice level. Amazing! Wife got a baseball cut sirloin, with fries. Said it was amazing **************** Edit 2025-08-06: We went back in for dinner... Wow the portions are even larger at dinner time. The salads were great, the Spicy Chicken Pasta was full of flavor, and the chicken fried steak was yummy and enough for four meals. ******************** OMGs... Finally, found some properly seasoned food in Stephenville. The benedict was the best we've had in a very long time. The grits are actually seasoned, and so tasty. The country breakfast was full of flavor. I love that I asked for the sausage to be well done, and it was just shy of being burnt (perfect). The biscuits and gravy were amazing! This place is definitely a must visit, and we will be back many times I'm sure.

Our office holiday meal here was excellent! First, the planning was easy with responsive communication from Melanie. The hardest part was choosing which delicious food to include. Second, the atmosphere and service were outstanding. New chairs and black tablecloths with just the right amount of cozy winter decor. Third, the cocktail menu is inventive and extensive. Finally - and most importantly- the food. Everything was perfect. Flavorful steaks cut with a butter knife. Chipotle mashed potatoes. Decadent dessert. The food here never disappoints.

This was my families first time in Chef Newton's restaurant. To say we were amazingly impressed would be an understatement. The food was outstanding. By far the best chicken fried steak we've ever had and the ribeye steak was incredible. The staff did a bang up job and the atmosphere made the whole experience feel like a homily little restaurant with lots of character. Chef Newton was great and even took a picture with us to include Master Chief Junior contestant Shane the train that also works in the kitchen. Chef Newton even recommended the type of Bourbon to use in the Smoky old fashioned drink that I ordered. Just a great experience overall. Now that my daughter will be attending Tarleton starting in the fall it will provide an opportunity for my wife and I to come up and visit her and eat at Newton's Saddleback restaurant many times to come!!!

Celebrated our Anniversary there and had one the best dinners ever. The steak was perfectly cooked and the salmon was the best I've ever had. The flavor was amazing. Our server Brooke was so attentive and super sweet! Great service Brooke! It was a perfect dinner to celebrate us! Definitely recommend and we will be going back!

My son and daughter live in Stephenville, and we have passed this place heading home many times. My wife finally talked me into driving in from Glen Rose to try it out. We were not disappointed. When we walked in, there was not a host to greet us, but as I was getting ready to wander into the dining room, I was surprised by the owner/chef offering to seat us. He was extremely friendly. He waved a server over to get us started and stopped to talk to every table on his way back to the bar. You can tell he appreciates his customers. The majority of the staff was very friendly and upbeat. The person that brought our appetizer was the only exception and they dropped the appetizer off without a smile, but it did not bother me. Starters: The crawfish appetizer was very flavorful. My only critique is the lack of crunchiness in the breading. My wife enjoyed a Texas Tea and noted it was "poured" very well. One more of those and my night might have ended on a different note. Entrees: My wife ordered the pork chop, and I got the Ribeye (capitalized out of respect). Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. The chipotle mashed potatoes were fantastic, and I even enjoyed whatever the green vegetable was that came with it. The seasoning was exceptional. I usually salt my food when I eat out and there was no need to this time. And then came the Deserts!! Top notch bread pudding and the cheesecake we ordered to-go for my son was also delicious (we took a bite, but hey, we paid for it!). Is this place perfect, absolutely not, but it is very close unless you are a stuffy individual always looking for problems. I'm talking to you Karen. The prices are not cheap, but not expensive for what you get in my opinion. We will be back!

I'll admit I'm a little biased. Mike Newton is actually a client of mine and has come to be a good friend. I'm super excited for his restaurant to open fully. For now he is doing Pop-Up event dinners. They are 4 course and are different every time. The twists he puts on traditional meals is amazing. Everything is full of flavor, both local and exotic. If you get a chance to come to a Pop-Up you will not regret it. If you don't, plan to make reservations for the restaurant in a few months!

What a great addition to Stephenville Dining! The lunch menu offers nice choices with a variety of Cowboy Newton's flavors to experience. I wanted to try everything but limited myself to a few of what looked like would be my favorites. I started off with Cowboy Southwest Bruschetta-what an excellent choice to begin with! We're talking about his Guac and Pico version, sprinkled with diced fresh jalapeno peppers. The flavor combination was excellent, and I will be devouring this again and again. Moving on, the Southwest Caesar Salad was next, and the croutons seemed to be marvelous large crunchy cornbread squares. The dressing had a Southwest kick, with a hint of smoky and spicy flavors. Excellent! They weren't serving the reuben, and they substituted thinly-sliced prime rib (yes, you heard me correctly!) on soft and buttery tasting toasted bread all all the scrumptious toppings. The ending was near, and we had some of the best Texas Pecan coffee with dessert (their specialty)-I didn't even use cream because it was so wonderful and smooth. Highly recommended. I opted for the Housemade Cheesecake of the Week, which was a decadent Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Cheesecake, covered in ganache. Take your time, and bite by bite SAVOR it! What a lunch-I'll be going back for dinner soon!

The food & service was perfect! Kaitlyn was our waitress and did a fantastic job! She knew the menu and made recommendations. I had the filets and it was tender & cooked perfect! My daughter had the NY Strip, again, cooked perfect! We just happened upon it while traveling from Dallas to Brownwood. This is a superb local restaurant that deserves a try! I can’t wait to bring the wife when traveling again to see our kids at HPU!

I cannot impress on you JUST how pleasantly surprised I was by this place. I have been to several high-end restaurants in the past and This place tops all of them hands down! The chef is not afraid to use seasonings but still leaves enough of the flavor of meat to shine through. Yes. It is a small place. Our table was quite small…but it was just me and my husband. The drinks were strong and they kept them coming! The bread pudding is also just amazing!!! More than that though is the service! I had three different servers/waitresses take things off of our table as they walked passed just because they noticed we were done…whether it was a plate or drink; it didn’t matter. And at the end of our time there; our waitress took care of boxing up our leftovers. I cannot recommend this place enough! I will definitely be returning with our family for a second experience!

Highly recommend! The food is amazing. The only negative is that there is one cook so the food takes a really long time to be served, especially if you have a large group. However, when the food is served, it delivers. So personally, I think it’s worth the wait.

My wife and I dine at Newton's Saddlerack every time we stay in Stephenville. The food is creative, tasty and always cooked to perfection. I think we have had just about everything on the menu and I can say my go to's are the Redneck Surf and Turf, pork belly, shrimp, jalapeno grits and chef's bbq sauce, for main course love the chicken fried strip and finally for dessert, I tend to be whiskey guy and they have a wonderful selection of the brown drink. The atomsphere is relaxed and friendly which is due to the owners, staff and bartenders. What's better than good food and drink in friendly, easygoing atomsphere. Keep up the good work and see you soon

Personally I don’t like this as it led to a jaw dropper at the end. My wife had steak and gnocchi and hers was excellent. I had the signature fried steak and it was huge and fried crispy. Yet it was quite bland and could have used seasoning. Overall a good value. I expected expensive but $173.00 ($200 after tip) was quite the sticker shock for two people with one appetizer without alcohol or dessert. It also got really loud and made it hard to speak to my spouse without shouting.

This is going to be a mixed review. Highlight was the jalapeno gravy on the chicken fried steak. This was our second visit and we were there to celebrate my husband‘s birthday. First time we had an exceptional experience. This time not so much. They had a lady literally giving Botox injections right beside our table. We were incomplete shock. I don’t know in what world giving Botox injections in a restaurant filled with people is appropriate. My husband was literally facing them the whole time and completely grossed out. Ruined the experience. There was also a lady in the corner selling jewelry. Again inappropriate but not nearly as bad as the Botox. On a positive note our server was wonderful and the food was good. But we just could not get over the Botox going on.
