Delicious diner food at fair prices served by a very friendly and attentive staff. I had a breakfast sandwich and pancakes and both were very good. The sausage patty on my sandwich was nice and crispy and the pancakes were super fluffy. The coffee was fresh and pretty good. Overall, I’d definitely recommend checking this place out. The food is good and the retro stainless steel aesthetic is very fun.
The Gem is our "go-to" diner for breakfast. The food is AWESOME, the atmosphere is New Jersey Diner Retro, and the staff is friendly and attentive. Almost all of the staff have been at The Gem for years and that speaks volumes for how well this diner is run. It is well worth the wait on weekend mornings.
Called in takeout order 2:45 while leaving doctor. Getleman called us when not there before closing. Told him stuck in traffic. So thankful they waited for us to get there about 3:05 to get wife's food. She loves Gem omelets. What awesome customer service!!
Classic retro style 50s diner historic to Syracuse The Gem truly keeps to its namesake. The food was sublime and we were attended to by the courteous and friendly staff. I am definitely going to go back.
Such a great place for delicious food! The atmosphere is fantastic and our server was adorable. I got the bacon cheeseburger with sweet potato fries and it was all so good. It was a nice, big portion and the fries were some of the best I've ever had. The chocolate shake was perfect, and the rest of the desserts looked so good I'll definitely be coming back.
We love the Gem diner! It’s definitely a go to spot for us. The atmosphere is fun, the service is great, the food is delicious! On a recent visit we had Danielle as a waitress she was above and beyond, honestly so attentive even while they were quite slammed, so sweet & helpful all with a smile on her face. If we had to give one critique it would be their pancakes & french toast are not our favorite (they are not bad, just not our personal favorite) but everything else we have ever tried on their menu has not disappointed.
What a literal gem! Loved the food, atmosphere and the staff. So glad we found this while visiting the area for a wedding. Good job all!
Visiting town looked at many options came across this gem. No pun intended. Food was fantastic. Service was wonderful great vibes coming back for that homemade corned beef and hash.
Great diner experience in Syracuse. This place has been around forever it seems - my in laws used to go here on dates! Great service and great food - I had the Irish Benedict...definitely ask for hollandaise on your hash browns! Good value for what you spend. Highly recommend!
I'll tell you the gem Diner you can't get a better Diner in town Doug is got a tip top atmosphere there and he's always on the move there him and Tammy do a super job down there the staff is wonderful very super friendly and it's always clean the food is fantastic there always good and hot and that's about it
Great diner with friendly service and a huge breakfast and lunch menu plus daily specials. If you like diner food this is a must visit. Also right off the Interstate highway for those passing through.
I found this place by accident driving to a nearby hotel. One of my colleagues and I went there for breakfast. The building looks like a 1950's dinner. Servers and staff were very friendly and helpful. I had a sausage an cheese omelet. It was very large and delicious. My friend asked for a modified version of a menu item and they had know problem making the changes at no additional cost. Pricing was reasonable and the atmosphere was interesting. I highly recommend.
First time coming here with my grandfather. We had a half-hour wait, but it was worth it. The wait staff were very polite considering how busy they were. The food was very filling and well. Portioned, definitely will stop back in when in the area.
The Gem Diner is a great place to have breakfast. We were seated promptly on a busy morning and served with a smile. Food was great all around at our table. Definitely recommend. This was our family's second time being here while we were in the area. Will definitely return when we are in the area again.
Great diner experience! Big selection of food, friendly staff, fair prices. Breakfast, lunch, dinner foods. Booths, tables, counter. Nice bright and clean, ample parking. Great place to take the family, or just the two of us! It's not far from Destiny, the Harley Davidson store, or Harrison Bakery (another favorite spot). What are you waiting for? Go to The Gem Diner.
I am originally from Syracuse and enjoy coming here when I am in town. I always find something yummy on the menu. I especially love the selection of pies! The servers are always friendly and attentive. Portions are generous and the prices are good. Will continue to come back here for the friendly service, comfortable vibe, and delicious food!
If you’re at all fond of diner food and diner-style atmosphere, definitely take the time to go to the Gem. They serve breakfast all day and have a great selection of sandwiches and burgers. Try the sweet potato fries! The attached photo is of one of their pancakes: it was bigger than my hand!
Historic. Can I say “the tits”? The tits. I had my first 3am omelette here. I lost my virginity in the OG Doc’s. The shirts used to be better. Bring back Doc! Whoever hires the staff has the same search history as me. I don’t even get shaken when they mess up. It’s an institution. But also, why is there photos of shirtless men in the restroom?
Always come here for breakfast when I visit Syracuse NY. One of the few remaining " GEMS" left in the city. The Fritatta is also great! I suggest the half if you're not a big eater like me! Coffee is always hot and fresh, and the atmosphere with the old school NYC/NJ chromed out caboose diner is where it's at! I remember coming here before it was remodeled and cleaned up!
A true diner. Great staff, good energy, and really good food.
Great Diner food! Will definitely back!
ALWAYS GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE ! ! ! Also The Movie American Dresser was Filmed here Starring Kieth David Tom Berenger and Bruce Dern... King Of The Road ( Played by Bruce Dern) Stumbles in a 50's Style Diner Lil Gems Diner Was Used for Scene... Unsure who played waitress at counter when Bruce Dern walked in...
This past December I was a part of a Holiday Tour that happened to stop at The Gem Diner on our way to Buffalo, New York. We were a group of 14 and were seated promptly and courteously. I had a dish that I tell my wife and kids about months later. It is called “The Heart Attack”, and consists of two homemade biscuits, hash browns, and eggs, covered with sausage gravy. I was swooning over this dish as I consumed it entirely!! The only thing I would change about it, respectfully, is the name. It should be called “Smothered Alive”.
Loved this place. Cute decor and atmosphere. Service was on point. Food was delicious and coffee was hot.
I love coming to this diner. Its one of my favorite places to eat at.
Syracuse's Gem for sure! Great food, service, atmosphere. We have a growing "boutique diner culture" with high cost menu & bling, this one is a forever diner, you get what you order and with great staff- no need for the bling . Love this Gem
Irish Benedict……. Amazing Made with corned beef hash
I’ve been going here for many years with family and friends. I’ve never been disappointed with any of the food. They have huge frittatas.
Went for an outing with my dad and sister for a special meal after visiting our late mother/ wife. Nostalgic as she loved it there and we had a few meals as a family there. It was lunch time on a Saturday, so very busy and had a wait to be seated. Food took awhile to come out as well, but the server was excellent about refills. When food came, it was hot and excellent quality. I chose "the heart attack". Sausage gravy was tasty, eggs made the way I ordered. All on shredded home fries...a nice touch. My sister was happy with her grilled chicken, and dad loved his burger (that's his "go to"). Definitely won't wait so long to come back next time! Highly recommend.
Their staff is amazing and their food chef kiss it is so warm except for sandwiches and their car that’s out side is so cool because 1 my name is Gemma and my nickname is gem so that’s really cool
Just an awesome place for a hot made from scratch breakfast on a cold December morning. Hash Attack plate is worth it as it warms the soul 😁.
I love the gem, and have loved it through all the different owners. I'm a little bummed that they took away the mural for challenger baseball, but it was replaced with a good cause, and there is a picture in the entry still. The food is great, the servers are very nice and they will let you modify things. Prices are a little higher than what you might expect at a diner, but isn't that the case everywhere? I had the fish sandwich and fries. They have good crinkle fries.
The best food I have had in a very long time. The corned beef hash was perfectly crisp. The veggie fretatta 1/2 plate was fantastic. There was so much food that I needed to take half of it home. My friend had the Irish Benedict and liked it. The hot cocoa had real whipped cream. Best breakfast in a very long time. This will be a go to place when I am in the area. I unfortunately live over 2 hours away. Service was great and the price was great.
Amazing. In town, looking for breakfast. This popped up, took a chance..what can I say it was amazing. Busy, and as a Englishman in New York surprised as to how busy. Got a seat at the counter ( bucket list ) and was served by friendly and attentive staff. The accent caused a bit of a stir and spent most of the time chatting to an ex Veteran. Oh and the food was amazing.
I work next door, and each time I've gotten take out I was extremely satisfied. Buffalo chicken sandwich is huge and flavourful. You can't go wrong with the hotdogs either.
I Had a Great Experience , the Waiter Name was Leslie . SHE WAS remarkable . Nice positive Energy and fully of Great Hospitality . I would like to Applaud her for being so Awesome 😊😊😊
We were really pleased with our breakfast at this diner. The service was amazing. The diner was busy even for a slightly off time (10:30 on Sunday morning) but there was plenty of parking and seating. We had a small wait for the food, but it was well worth it. We each got a variety of different things to try out (pancakes, French toast, omelet, bacon, hash browns, French fries) and everything was delicious. We felt the price point was really good for what we got and we loved the atmosphere as well.
When my dad was younger, his dad owned part of this diner, so I always heard stories about them eating there. We were seating fairly quickly upon arriving and given adequate time to order. It felt like a true classic diner, with families all around and workers who had formed relationships with the usual customers. The place was very busy, so it did take a while for us to order, but our waitress did come by to apologize for the wait and let us know it would be out soon. We both ordered 2 eggs, rye toast, and home fries. My boyfriend got bacon as well on the side. I ordered my eggs overeasy, testing if they would come as true overeasy eggs or slightly uncooked, because I have unfortunately had that experience at other diners. My eggs came out PERFECTLY, I was so excited. Everything tasted perfect and it was a great breakfast to have before our drive home. I understand why my family spent so much time here and im proud to have a connection to it.
Really good diner. My Hash Attack was awesome. The pineapple pancake was delicious too. The gravy was really good and the biscuits were fresh. I’m so glad that we made it here. The service was excellent and the menu is large. The atmosphere was very pleasant and cheerful. I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant.
I went to breakfast at the Gem diner. I was greeted immediately and was seat at a booth. Sam, my server, came over and took my drink order. When she returned she took my order of a western omelet without cheese, wheat bread and extra bacon. Home fries came with the meal. Food was delicious and I got 3 pieces of bacon. All staff was friendly and efficient. Prices were reasonable. A definite "gem". I would go there again.
This is the best Ruben sandwich twist ever! It is a Ruben Burger. Perfectly made so that you taste the burger in the corned beef and the corned beef in the hamburger! Amazing flavor! I had mine without bread! The service is the top notch! Best diner in Syracuse, NY
Everything I remember from Doc’s, and then some! I had the Hash Attack - and it was awesome! The service was definitely diner-level (think “coffee always full” and a staff with laughter and attitude). This Syracuse classic can’t be missed - absolutely make a stop for breakfast or lunch and you won’t be disappointed!
Our family chose The Gem Diner for breakfast. The service was fast and friendly. The decor is fantastic with a 50's old fashioned diner vibe. Our breakfasts were served hot and fresh to order. Overall, with many different choices in the area, The Gem Diner is one of our go-to favorites. Highly recommended.
The menu had a pretty large selection of items priced within a reasonable price range. The place is kept very clean. My hash browns were a bit greasy and plain; however, the omelette was delicious, you could really tastes the veggies. Coffee wasn’t burnt and tasted just right. The staff was very friendly and young. It was crowded and there was a pretty long wait as far a diners are concerned. Other than this everything else was just right if you’re really looking for a great diner experience

This was by far the worst food I ever had there today...I requested a medium burger and received an over cooked one and fries that were obviously cooked and re cooked to warm up and serve...they were so over cooked also.
Breakfast was really good. Next time upstate, will go again.
The food was pretty good. The wait staff were kind, and the food was delivered quickly. It was a little pricey for diner food, but with the cost of everything right now, that's to be expected. I'd definitely go back.
Had the Chicken Patty Sand w/ Tater Tots. Yummy! Tarter Sauce Great in my opinion. Good Burgers & Fish Fries. Delicious Oreo Cookie Homemade Cake when available. Have others also at times.
I am delighted to report that my patented Eggs Benny Barometer (for determining the quality and efficacy of diner fare) gave me a positive reading for this place!
Great little spot for breakfast. The waitress did a decent job, though she forgot to give us a last fill of coffee before we left. Overall a great experience.
Nice affordable diner to get breakfast. We went on a Saturday morning, so there was a little bit of a wait. The food was good and the coffee was hot and kept coming.
It was a great, classic diner experience. When we arrived the parking lot was packed and assumed it would be a long wait, but we were pleasantly surprised that they had available seating. The staff were great and handled the volume of customers well. The food came out in a timely matter as well, and was reasonably priced. Definitely worth stopping in if you’re in the neighborhood!
Definitely a hidden gem. Hehe, it’s a very good diner. Nothing crazy is going on here. But they are very good.
Really good food, and fast, courteous customer service. A must-stop place when in the Syracuse area. I had chicken fried steak with eggs and homefries, and coffee. Tax, tip and all was about $24. There are many options that are reasonably priced, but mine was more expensive because of the steak. I'll go again, and bring others for a business breakfast, lunch or informal meeting. There were plenty of seats, though I was there during a weekday.
A kitschy little diner with solid food and service. My boyfriend and I stopped there for breakfast and the service was quick and the food was great. The staff were super quick with coffee refills and were refreshingly not overly friendly or peppy. I had a Western omelette and he had a cheesesteak breakfast sandwich. Both were appropriate size and cooked well.
Been here few times. The girls (hostesses) are not very welcome. A smile here and there would be nice. The place is usually busy and the food is great. Tasty! In general, staff could be more welcoming. On one ocasione the check was placed on the table 2 seconds after food arrived. Was planning on ordering cakes from the front but didn't get a chance.

The food is decent and the decorations are pretty cute. On their busy days it is a nightmare! The wait takes forever to be seated and then once seated, to get your food. They over crowd their restaurant to full capacity. If you are afraid of getting covid do not come here when it's busy. I highly recommend eating here on a slow, non busy day that would make it worth your while!
We enjoyed the food here -- I had a burger and my wife had wings -- and the waitstaff is good as well. We liked the food here better than at Stella's. However, the only concern here is the kitchen. Be prepared to wait half an hour or more for your food once an order has been placed. Could actually take that time as a good sign that they actually cook your stuff. Still, the long wait times cause the waitstaff to be more harried than they should be. So, go here if you have the time and want some diner food after walking at the lake or whatnot.
My family has worked there for long time and i know the food is amazing! But today me and my family went to the place and ordered a cheeseburger with baccon and something other idk but we asked for them well done you know basically burn the dam thing. When we got it, the food was just blood and greasy. So we asked for it to be cooked more and came back still pink and a bit bloody. I love this place my family has grwon up in that place but the food today puts the place to shame...
Had breakfast here this morning! As usual the food was amazing and service was speedy! However, I just needed to share my experience. Our waitress was great. She was personable and helpful! However, I couldn't help but observe the other servers (since their just behind the front counter). A majority of the servers seemed bothered to be there. I have been here many times, and today it was not as busy as usual. I watched one server in particular seat two separate tables. Both times she set the menus down and walked away from the parties she sat. She didn't look at the customers, didn't say a word to them. One party even tried to ask her a question as they sat down and she just kept walking. It was just a very tense enviornment that I don't typically experience here!
Was a cute place. Nothing really made it stand out from other "diners." Was nice and clean - that was good. Two dishes ordered were simple eggs, meat, pancakes with water. They were good. My husband wasn't thrilled about his. Said the chicken fried steak was the smallest he'd seen, and definitely a frozen item. He wasn't happy about a $4.50 soda either (I do not know if it was provided on the menu and he missed it, or what). Overall was a nice one-time "mom n pop" experience. I ate it quick enough, I forgot to take a picture.
My partner and I went here for the first time this weekend for breakfast, the chicken for the chicken and waffles was dry and seasoned with Italian seasonings. Not what you would expect for breakfast 👎 The server seemed so unhappy and the vibes were just NOT diner vibes. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone trying to have an enjoyable experience. We started our day here and couldn’t wait to leave. The food was not great, should have just went to McDonald’s for a better meal that would have cost less. 🤷🏻♀️
Food was ok. No complaints per se. Ordered 2 drinks, a panini and a chicken tender salad. Portions were fine. Total came to $40.
Food was okay for a diner, coffee is decent. Not really a diverse crowd. Food takes a while to come out. Food prices are reasonable but good service from staff.

Went for the first time on a friend’s recommendation because she’d gone years ago. Spent almost $30 per person to build a decent combo that exists on the menu of every other diner I’ve been to locally. Sausage gravy tasted like flour, hash wasn’t seasoned, brown gravy was lumpy, my friend had corned beef hash and it was undercooked. Potato pancakes tasted like funnel cakes. Service was just OK. After tip, spent $90 on the most mediocre meal I’ve had in Syracuse. Won’t be going back.
First time here and I wasn't thrilled. The food was acceptable however the service was horrible. I showed up with a friend of mine to just grab a burger and shake however we ended up ordering appetizers also. The waitress we had couldn't care less about getting our order perfect which was sad since there was only 3 other couples in the place so it's not like the place was really busy. We get through apps and most of the burger and we both asked for another shake. I guess that's a huge no no due to she had an issue with it. I'm fairly certain that if a customer requests something then you should be more than willing to comply with the request. So after about five minutes we got our second round of shakes along with the bill. Seems like we were being rushed and yet for what purpose really, we were now one of two tables of people in the place.. However we quickly finished our meal and paid the bill and left.. I get people have off days so I am willing to go back and give this place another shot. However for a first time experience it was pretty horrible
Food was eh at best. Overcooked for sure. Like how do you mess up breakfast food? Our server Kelly was inattentive and when she dropped off our check she didn't ask if we wanted boxes for our leftovers.
-DO NOT recommend -Garlic BBQ , literally diced cloves with bbq sauce terrible ! , - DO NOT recommend going on a Sunday you will be starving! Waited an hour for a booth got a table while a booth was taken by another couple. Waited another 30 mins to an hour for our food. -DO NOT Recommend - fratta and cheese was not melted down . I rate this a 3/10 for service combined with food.
The host lied that we would have a 15-minute wait when we arrived. We waited over one hour. After we arrived, it became clear that there were 50 people ahead of us and all were told it was a 15-minute wait. They clearly were packing the wait area by giving false information so people would not leave if they knew how bad the actual wait was. The food was average and not worth that headache.
FOOD POISON ALERT PLEASE DON'T EAT HERE.The food I ordered was steak breakfast and it's was rubbery and ok also the atmosphere was way of the staff only attended to me twice and brought me A1csteak sauce with hair on the top and shortly after eating that day I got food poison and couldn't stop throwing up all night. I wouldn't recommend this place even to my dog. And please don't apologize get better cooks and better service
