Really awesome service and food at this Bear! The restaurant is a converted dinner and the seating is a little small to accommodate enough people, but they do have regular tables in the back. I wish I could remember the name of our server, she really deserves a lot of praise for the way she handled my poor sense of humour. She asked me what kind of dressing I wanted for my salad, I said salad dressing, most servers would get confused as to what to do, but she brought me salad dressing on the side in case I didn't like it. I also asked for the impossible rare end cut of prime rib, i was served a slice of end cut and a slice of rare prime rib, they also had full strength horse radish. My wife ordered the chicken fried steak, I suggested the small portion since she doesn't eat very much, but asked the server to check with her, and the server brought the large one as she was asked to by my wife. My daughter enjoyed a really awesome salad and didn't have to eat "kid food" We were all delighted to have a fine dining experience for a nominal price, the food was service was exemplary! We were there on the Saturday night before the super bowl, I really hope that someone figures out what our waitresses name is so that she can be rewarded for her fine attention to detail and awesome character! It was amazing how she handled a freaky looking, 300lb high functioning maniac and his only slightly embarrassed high maintenance family. The experience was absolutely fantastic and helped make the whole weekend one of the best that we've had since covid. We felt great ever since, everyone on the staff was delightful!

I recently moved to Walnut Creek and while looking for a place to brunch, I found this gem. Service was fantastic, the food was fresh and tasty. Like any other Black Bear Diner experience, the theme is country meals, not the best, but better than most, service can leave you waiting during peak times, atmosphere usually chaotic. I like black bear for the heart breakfast that fills me up. The girls love the lemonade. Everyone leaves full and happy. If you are hungry and one is about, but your not sure of other places to eat, stick to Black bear and you will le a very satisfied.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve been to Black Bear Diner in Walnut Creek about 20 times now, and I can confidently say I've never had a bad meal! This place has become a typical family consideration for lunch or breakfast, and one of my top picks on the menu is definitely the orange juice—it's fresh and delicious! The atmosphere is welcoming, and the staff is always friendly, which enhances the overall dining experience. The quality of the food has consistently met my expectations, making it a reliable choice for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. That said, I do have a couple of minor criticisms. While the tabletop surfaces are always clean, I’ve noticed that the cleanliness under the tables can feel a bit lacking, and some of the windowsill areas near certain booths could use a little attention. It’s not a dealbreaker by any means, but it’s something worth mentioning. Overall, Black Bear Diner is a solid choice with a great menu and a cozy vibe. I’ll definitely continue to return for the tasty food and friendly service! Highly recommend it!

Stopped here with my mom and daughter for lunch after running errands. At lunchtime, we were able to get a close parking spot and get seated right away. Breakfast is a whole different story. The wait can be long. They do have a text notification system there for those days. There was a sandwich melts on the placemat that distracted me from the huge menu. My only dissatisfaction was the silverware, wrapped in a paper napkin, was dirty. Just take a look at yours before you use it. Everyone was very nice. Lots of visual stimulation. The bears are cute.

Ok for lunch but my burgerandfries tasted warmed up instead of cooked fresh. And they were barely the warm, not hot. Portions were large and prices were good.

Black Bear Diner isn't the place to go if you desire innovative or non-traditional breakfast fare. You're going to be seated in booths that are about 10% smaller than they should be while being served by a person who is managing too many tables simultaneously; that leads to an unresponsive server who is doing the best they can. The food is pretty uninspiring Americana dishes - soggy hash browns, and overcooked eggs were well represented at our table. I'll go back only if it is convenient. In general, it's no better or worse than any Denny's I've ever eaten at.

The coffee was just okay, nothing special. But what was truly terrible was the dish I ordered. It’s called the “Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak with Eggs,” and it was awful. It comes with a thick white gravy that tastes really bad. The “chicken” isn’t even a whole breaded piece — it’s some kind of dark-colored ground patty that doesn’t taste like chicken at all. Honestly, chicken nuggets taste better. The diced potatoes with vegetables were fine, and the over-medium eggs looked almost raw. Overall, it was a disappointing experience at this Black Bear Diner location. I’ve been to other ones — for example in Oakley and on the outskirts of Los Angeles — and they’ve been incredible. There’s no doubt that the cooks make a huge difference in the quality of the restaurant.

Food was terrible. I thought the Emeryville Black Bear diner was the worst, but this one is definitely in a close second. The server completely messed up the order. It was simple. I wanted two club sandwiches with double turkey and no ham or bacon. And absolutely no mayonnaise. I got a pair of club sandwiches that were covered in mayonnaise, loaded with ham, had barely any turkey, but she did get the bacon right. Then the dessert. I ordered the bread pudding. When I tried to stick my fork through it the fork stopped. I thought it was frozen solid in the middle. I could only eat a few bites from around the periphery. I didn't test the temperature of the center, so when I told the waitress that I couldn't eat it because it was frozen solid, she reported that these are baked fresh daily and not frozen. Clearly the problem was that it had been microwaved and burned solid in the middle. That would explain why the outside corners were molten hot, not like something that had been fresh baked, but like something that had just spent way too much time in the microwave. The server was way overworked and underperforming. I don't really blame her for this because this is definitely a hard job. But this is the second black bear diner that I've received abysmal food and service that barely qualifies for two stars.

This chain has become more like Denny’s to me: the best ones are off of a freeway on a road trip and NOT in your local radius. I don’t understand what their major malfunction with service is. This isn’t a Michelin star restaurant, but geez guys: could you remember my order? It was a fairly simply situation of two people eating dinner together. It took forever for a server to take our order. We weren’t in a far flung area of the restaurant. We were RIGHT NEXT TO the kitchen. When someone finally did come our way, she forgot that we had both asked for a cornbread muffin with our meals. After our food arrived (another too long wait for this level of food), we had to try to wave our server down again. She finally noticed us. When we asked about our side, she seemed shocked and amazed that we had ordered it. Huh? Yes, we got said muffins, but half of our food was gone by then. I’m done with this place. It’s so sad how many restaurants are no longer worth visiting in person anymore. I wanted it to be better, but you can want in one hand…you know the rest of the saying.

If I didn’t know better I think it was cooked in a hospital. I ordered this often. There were about 2 tablespoons of potatoes smeared with some gravy poured on it, not the usual portion. The pot roast was flavorless, there was no seasoning in the green beans other than big chunks of onion, no bacon and to add insult injury they did not deliver my salad and dressing so essentially I had institution style pot roast dinner and by the time I paid including delivery and tip it was $30 as many great restaurants is there are in Walnut Creek, Blackbear has always been a good choice, not so this time seriously doubt I would return to this restaurant very subpar meal
