Incredible. One of the best vegan cheese pizzas I’ve had. The crust, the sausage, the peppers, all top notch. But the reason for the 5 star review is not just the excellent food. The staff and management truly care about people and show real compassion toward the community. I was visiting a dear family friend who was in a devastating auto accident and brought to Portland for treatment. He’s coming along miraculously, despite having a long road ahead. As we were ordering, management noticed and came out and took extra good care of us. I will definitely be back for the food and vibes. Highly recommend this establishment! Life of Pie gets it.
The pizza is delicious, the ingredients are fresh, and the dough is perfect. The service is great, especially from our waitress, Asma Francis. She was friendly, professional, and added a special touch to our experience. I highly recommend it!
It is fantastic food! The Pizza is amazing we had the sausages marinara 🤤. The servers are fast and polite definitely recommend this place if your in the area
The staff is always so friendly here. You have to try the lemon kale salad!
$7 full margherita pizza for happy hour 11-6pm I mean cmonnnnnnnnnnn NOW. I haven’t even taken a bite yet, doesn’t matter, this is a deal and a steal in a clean, fresh, open air, warm lit wood fired dining getaway. And don’t I forget, the young gent at the register Kento really topped off the experience, walking me through the options, no rush, order out quick, provided a ranch no question, I mean CMONNNN!!! Can’t beat this place Update: teeth have sunk into the za, butter me up and blast me off, this pie doesn’t belong in the same league as other ‘pizzas.’ This is a Major League Pie. Sprinkle some more cheese on top, crust dunk into sweet chili oil. GaMe OvEr. Soft, fluffy, jaw in no risk of being broken, delectable joy. One of my favorite dining experiences in the city of Portland, and perhaps ever. All places should be order at counter and eat at your own pace. Nobody keepin tabs. Well worth a stop, a sit, and a succulent munch.
Life of Pie is definitely one of my favorite pizza places in the Portland area 😋 Brick oven pizza 🍕 beer 🍺 wine 🍷salads 🥗 😋 This establishment is still enforcing wearing masks, with outdoor dining only that is right next to a super busy, congeted road where everyone is welcome to breathe in smoke and smog from the passing cars as well as the loud and obnoxious noises that come with busy streets!! However there is a take out option!! Happy hour is from 11am to 6pm Get a great size Margarita Pizza for ony $7! Parking is extremely challenging to find and practically no matter where you park it is all metered parking! And Portland is all about giving out parking TICKETS!! Do Enjoy Life of Pie!
So happy this yummy fare also has a take out option. Perfect for a rainy Saturday
So thrilled I finally went to life of pie; it was long overdue! The happy hour margherita pizza is a great deal and the toppings were very good quality and a good ratio. Just the right amount of sauce, fresh basil, and mozzarella. The crust was soft, thin, and flavorful. Very glad my friend ordered the cheesy bread too- I was absolutely blown away. They use really good quality cheeses and the crust is airy and soft. If you don’t usually get cheesy bread with pizza, this is the time to break your rule. Don’t listen to your brain when it’s like “cheesy bread is just pizza without sauce, what’s the point?”; get the cheesy bread…you won’t look back.
Have been going to Life of Pie for many years. Always excellent pizza, and the best price in the city during happy hour which they do every day from 11-6. Quality ingredients, quality product. Go during happy hour for a margherita pizza.
Life of Pie combines two things: A very good Pizza and easy accommodation for the whole family. Pizza quality: Ken's Artisan remains our favorite Pizza, but this is very close second. I especially appreciate the crust that is protected from soaking by a simple metal grit at the bottom of the plate. Ingenious. Easy: The location is easy to reach from the Westside. We never had a wait even on Thursday evenings with a party of 5. The waiters are friendly and very straightforward.
We got the margherita pizza and it was so fresh and hot! The sauce was very flavorful and the crust was thin, which we like! The staff were wonderful and gave us great drink selections, both alcoholic and non. I really enjoyed this place.
WOW! AMAZINGLY GOOD ZA! We were at a nearby restaurant and they acted like we were doing them a disservice by walking thru the door. So after waiting 15+ min with no server ever showing up we walked over here and what a smart move that was! Some of the best crust I've ever had. Not sure how they do it but it's doughy, airy, and just the right amount of crispy all at once! Topping were also great! Kale Arugula salad had a fantastic lemon honey dressing. And to round things out some the best customer service in town! We will be back!
Happy hours here are amazing! We came here for lunch during their Saturday happy hour (I believe everyday between 11 am and 6pm) and ordered two margarita pizzas and a few 🍺 (IPA and cider). The pizzas were freshly oven backed. And the beers were awesome too (you can’t really go wrong with IPAs here in Portland). It is a somewhat self-serve type of place: you order the food upfront and take a number with you when seating yourselves. Waitress will bring the food to the table once they are ready. And bring your dishes to the tray once you are done. Pretty typical here in Portland to be honest, which I like because you don’t have to wait to be served. There are descent amount of indoor and outdoor seating but can be busy during happy hours as it is such a steal 😉 Highly recommend if you like freshly baked pizza and you are on a budget. 😀
This was a great place to relax and refuel after our hike. I love the spacious seating areas with wooden bench tables both set indoor and outdoor. I like the efficiency of placing my order and getting my drinks for that no-fuss, laid- back atmosphere we were looking for. Food was delicious too and was brought to our table as soon as it was ready. We ordered pizza, salad, and beer. It’s hard to beat their $8 margherita pizza and $6 beer at Happy Hour (everyday at 11am-6pm)! There are clean restrooms are located in the back area of the restaurant in a hallway that require an access code. We will definitely return here the next time we are in town.
I love both their pizza and beer. I especially enjoy that I am able to order only one piece of pizza. The beer is delicious!!
I wanted to go here after hearing that they have Napoletana Style brick oven pizza for just $5 every day for happy hour, it seemed a little unbelievable to me. But boy, was I blown away. the pizza was so delicious, and was brought to us super quick. it was fresh, cheesy, full-size with the perfect crust, better than napoletana pizzas at much fancier places. The ratio of marinara and mozzarella was perfect, and the entire vibe of this place is so chill, everything happens quick, and fuss-free. You order, grab your number, sit at the table and within five minutes your pizza is there. you can see the chefs working and flapping the dough around, such a joy. Plus, the vibe of the entire street (NW 23rd ave) is amazing, perfect for a stroll after pizza. it is a very light eat as well, I could easily eat a full pizza by myself without feeling queasy later. I wonder why it took me such a long time to visit this place. I think I am going to be a weekly visitor there now for sure. If you love brick oven fired napoletana pizza, get up and go here, and take your friends.
Fantastic wood fired pizza! They have a small list of on tap drinks, but it works with the pizza. Thin hand tossed crust with quality toppings. They have the awesome little pepperoni that curls and gets crispy on the edge! The sauce is a great canvas for the toppings whether you get a pre constructed pizza or make your own. It's not muted and unnoticed, but a wonderful compliment. Give this place a try!!
My absolute go-to when pizza cravings hit. I'll drive out of my way to get here. They do a Margarita pizza justice, have flavorful, chewy dough (a very nice take on the Napoli style) and their happy hour prices are simply impossible to beat when it comes to tasty, wood-fired pizza and a pint of beer 🍺❤️🍕
I’ve eaten here at least 20 times (both locations) and it’s incredible every single time. I love how I can order ahead with an option for asap or scheduled so I can plan ahead when I’m out shopping or heading into Portland. We moved away from the area in Nov 2020 but this is a must eat every time I’m back in Vancouver. Yes I go out of my way and travel to Portland for it! (Even tho Portland has gone so downhill…. Luckily it’s somewhat okay near both locations!) I’ve gotten many of my friends and family hooked on it and it makes me happy to support places that pride themselves on quality food with quality ingredients! I usually request my pizza to be double cut for ease of eating.
Fantastic new spot on 23rd. Friendly service and was slow when I went in the late afternoon. Their Happy Hour is really a Happy Day Time Hours because it goes from open to 6pm! That $5 margarita pizza was perfect for one person and very filling. Small but varied selections of craft beers too. Will definitely be back soon.
Solid pizza at a reasonable price! Your pizza will be about $15 and there's a day that they offer almost half price margherita pizza. If you arrive late enough then the neighboring library parking lot will be open for use saving you trouble of finding street parking. You'll have to bus your own table. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.
Kept walking by this place and it smelled so good that we had to come try it. It did not disappoint! They had a simple menu with only a couple of pizzas. I picked the mushroom, pecorino and truffle oil wood fired pizza. It came a bit burnt, but the dough was still soft and chewy. The toppings were fresh and flavourful. It’s a personal size pizza, cut into four slices. The slices are thin and easy to finish, but definitely filling.
Good wood-fired pizza becomes great during happy hour. Good balance of sauce/crust/toppings. The kale salad is my favorite. The marinara spaghetti was really good, but not on the happy hour menu. Jones fountain sodas available. Indoor and heated outdoor seating available. Staff is friendly.
Great pizza! My wife and I stopped here after a day trip to Seattle before getting back to our hotel in downtown Portland. I had the Bacon, Goat cheese, leek, and caramelized onion pizza and it was delicious. My only complaint was that the bacon was not cut into smaller pieces and rendered a little more. As soon as you bit into the bacon, the whole half bacon slice would come off the pizza slice. My wife loved the Margherita she got. We are slight pizza snobs and this place had amazing dough and their wood-fire oven doesn’t hurt either. If you love great pizza, you can’t go wrong with Life of Pie.
Stopped in for happy hour, which had a crazy good deal!! Only $8 for a whole margarita pizza. Also got a small kale salad which has a nutty sweet texture which was delicious and fresh. Pizza came in 5 minutes and we enjoyed on the patio. I’ve never had a plain margarita pizza where I don’t miss the toppings until now. Soft, fluffy crust and not greasy. Dinner for two for $15 crazy
On a recent visit to Life of Pie Pizza, I had the Bacon, Roasted Leeks & Goat Cheese EVOO Pizza (pictured). It was excellent. The oven-roasted leeks and caramelized onions gave it a sweetness, and the bacon, mozzarella and parmesan a light saltiness on a mild extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) base. And, of course, Life of Pie's wood-fired crust is always fantastic. I also really enjoy their Fennel Sausage and Mama Lil's Peppers specialty pizza (also pictured). That said, I am typically a classic Pepperoni person, myself (sometimes with extra mozzarella), which I have ordered from them many times, but their specialty pizzas are a fun and interesting departure. One really cool thing about Life of Pie, is that they have a $7 Margherita pizza (no modifications) happy hour special for several hours, each day, if you want to be simultaneously budget-conscious and bougie. Life of Pie has several locations in the greater Portland, Oregon area, and I have never had a bad experience with any of them. Love the pizza everytime! Have it a few times a month for lunch, can never go wrong with a happy hour 8$ pizza
This is a fun pizza and pasta spot in a neighborhood with good vibes. Order at the counter, they bring it out to you. Pizzas about 12” diameter. I ordered a build your own pizza with mozzarella, fennel sausage, mushrooms, basil and truffle oil. Wood fired right in front of everyone, with an open kitchen. Delish chili oil on the table, and relatively fast service. Came on a rainy Sunday lunch, solo date! The fennel sausage was tasty. Definitely added some red pepper flakes to kick it up a notch
Superior thin crust wood fired pizza! Dough is top notch! Perfect char! Excellent Ceaser salad! Reasonable price.
Really good. No more expensive than anywhere else. Good for gluten free options. GF pizza.
8 dollar happy hour pie! Crispy crust, zesty tomato sauce , strong basil - the chili oil to dip your crust or put on your pie is deliscious - service is good for an order to sit style - chilled atmosphere - highly recommended
My go to vegan pizza in Portland. Love their cashew cheese and the fact that they have a vegan protein option too with the field roast sausage crumbles. Chefs kiss. I accidentally ordered it with regular sausage online this time and they kindly remade it <3
One of the best pizza places in Portland. 9/13/2025. Again had pizza at this place. Not only the best in Portland , I believe it stands on of the top 10 in the US. After having pizza in Manhattan, this one is one of the best. They let you bring your own wine and corkage fee is only $5.
Just stumbled here today with my boys. Walk up counter to order with excellent service. The garlic bread is more like a garlic pizza which was divine. We are it all. The Caesar was enough to share the large and delicious. We ate it all The two pizzas which were New York style delicious. Meaning your pie piece folds in your hand. We would have eaten it all but after all that food we were stuffed packed it in a box and will eat for leftovers. What a fantastic find and will be one of my favorites to come to visit with my boys.
The pizza is great and they have incredibly fresh ingredients. The price point is perfect for the quality, they could honestly charge more. The only flavor that didn’t come through was the pepperoni. But the others made up for it. There is one big downside, you have to bus your own table. I kind of hate that. I’m paying and tipping, I don’t want to have to do everything. Overall it’s awesome and great seating outside if it’s nice out.
One of the best pizzas I've had in a while. Life of Pie has delicious food, friendly staff, plus a clean and chill atmosphere. I tried the wild mushroom pizza and added bacon, which was a tasty choice. Their fried ravioli was also a good appetizer. I would definitely recommend this spot to others and will be back!
One of the best pizzas I’ve had. Perfect dough, spot on cooked and different flavors. I ordered the Caramelized onions, goat cheese and garlic confit, and I ate the entire pizza. Loved the open windows and the tables outside. Staff are attentive and friendly. Highly recommend this place.
This was some of the best pizza I've ever had. The Margarita Pizza was beyond good. Crust was perfectly cooked, sauce had a great flavor and a really high quality cheese. The other pizza included garlic confit and goat's cheese which just added a little something different to the taste. This is a casual place were you place your order and then seat yourself. They will bring you order to you when ready. They have a decent selection of wines, draft and can beer. Parking is poor as most areas of downtown but this is right on the 15 bus route on 23rd.
Giving this a 5 based off of my first and only experience here so far. I've put off trying this place because I'm not wild about the name, but the common lunch crowd finally pulled me in. Or maybe it was the fact that I heard about the margarita pizza happy hour (which is now $7, NOT $5). The pizza was the size of a solid personal pizza, and it tasted very good. Fresh ingredients. Good structure (not much "flop" to the slice), though it could stand to be a little crispier, imo. Great crust that is a bit on the thick side. Quality cheese. Also, the parmesan that they give you here is shredded and fresh! And being offered a side of chili oil as a topping was also new to me (though it barely had any taste at all). The inside of the joint looks pretty nice, but all dining is still restricted to their outdoor seating in front of the building. Overall, I am impressed with the value of the margarita pizza (even though it was $2 more than expected). I'll definitely be back for another one, and will likely try a couple of the other pizzas and pastas in the future.
One of my favorite places to get some great tasting pizzas, especially their $5 margherita pizzas on happy hour (11am - 6pm everyday!). You really can't beat that price for the quality and taste. They also have other great pizzas. This place can get busy during the lunch hours and also right before happy hour ends, but they do a good job of cranking out the pizzas. Both of their locations have seating inside and some outside along the sidewalk.
What do we really like about this place? Excellent service, tasty vegan toppings, very good crust. I called ahead to order a pie to take home and have dietary restrictions. The woman who handled my call was very gracious when she helped me select toppings. This is a nit, and I really would like to rate them 4 1/2. Make sure that you order a "light bake" because their regular bake has more burnt spots than we like. But we really like this place and will return when we're in the neighborhood.
Ordered garlic bread, caramelized onions goat cheese and garlic confit, and season mushrooms pecorino Romano and truffle oil. The garlic bread was good version of garlic bread because it was thin bread and the cheese (maybe Parmesan) was a strong flavor. Between the pizzas I definitely preferred the garlic confit, the garlic was definitely not overpowering but it definitely comes through clearly. On the mushroom pizza, the mushrooms were on the raw side which I don’t prefer.
Good pizza shop, counter-service. Check the website for their happy hour specials (starting from 11a), where they offer a basic pie for about $8.00. It's busy and the seats are extremely crowded together, but the food is good. Our wait for our food was about 15 minutes. If you just happen to be snacking up and down Nob Hill (or day drinking), this is a great spot to stop at to get some food.
Came here for lunch and was pleasantly surprised! The place was busy but the order process is fast and once you place your order and find a seat it takes about 15-20mins for your food to arrive. Since we came during happy hour my friend ordered the Margarita Pizza that comes with fresh mozzarella, basil and cracked black pepper for only $5 which was a bargain. I on the other hand got the Truffle Mushroom pizza for around $15 and both were packed with so much flavor and pure deliciousness. The white truffle oil they use isn't strong at all and is the perfect balance to the mushrooms. Definitely a must try and can easily be shared since it can be more on the rich heavy side. The pizza bread here is soft and the dough is really kneaded to perfection. I could eat it for days! The only downside was they don't offer any chicken toppings for pizza and I love chicken on pizza to get my protein. They do however have a lot more options for sausages if you're into that or veggie options like artichokes, olives, etc. Street parking is limited so we parked further and scootered from downtown.
11-6 happy hour everyday! a real happy hour (not some weird time like 715- 928). The margarita pizza, $5 is a great pie all around. Crust is good, not too greasy like most pizza places, and simple flavors that bring the best out of each other. You're probably going to want a pie all to yourself. pay up front and find a seat, bus your own way.
This pizza spot gotta be my favorite to come back, too! All of the pizzas on the menu are worth trying. The salads hit the spot, and the fried ravioli was amazing! The one thing I wish would be different is the wait on the pizza. Usually, every time I visit, the wait can range from 35 mins to an hour on the wait for the pizza (came here about 5 times) I'd recommend to grab a salad or small dish to keep you happy on the wait. Pizza wait if worth it once it's out though!
Really simple menu, specialty or build your own, salads and spaghetti, order at the counter and grab a seat. Tends to get busy on nice days and during happy hour! Good atmosphere and ample seating. Fire oven, great crust, mild sauce. I added pepperoni, bacon and olives and it was quite salty, olives being pickled probably the culprit. They offer a homemade chili oil on the table and I found it milder than the crush pepper.
I wish they had more selections. I'm not a huge fan of goat cheese which seemed on every pizza on the menu. I had low expectations but then the pizza was sooo tasty. The wood fired makes a big difference. I will come back to try the mushroom pizza next time.
Ordered online for pick up. Was easy enough. They sent me a time, but also text when my order was ready to pick up. I ordered the garlic bread and bacon, leeks and goat cheese pizza (both pictured). Loved the combination of flavors on the pizza. Garlic bread was not greasy like other garlic breads I've had. Nice garlic flavor but not over powering. I also love that you can get up to two ranch before they charge you!
Pie quality and undercarriage was very good. Flavor profile was decent. They didn’t have any chicken options. Overall rating : 3.5
Used to be very fond of this pizzeria. Something significant appears to have changed in terms of staffing in 2021. Frequently receive wrong/missing/sparse toppings since then. I expect more when paying $16 + automatic 18% gratuity per 12" pizza. Only feasible explanation is that they've instituted an attitude surcharge.
I would say that they have all the ingredients to succeed. However, the first step is always to have a competent pizza maker. After I ordered, I sat and watched as this person over-floured the dough and stretched it incorrectly, resulting in a flat and lifeless crust. They kept adding wood to an already too-hot fire, which caused burning and collapsing of the gluten, ultimately leading to a greasy and bubble-less pie. The sauce and cheese were tasteless, and the basil they used was minimal and stale with no flavor. Sadly, this is no longer an authentic pizza shop; it has become just another American themed place. There are ways to return to making a proper pie, but it starts with having skilled pizza makers. As an Italian, I give your Margherita pizza a zero. Shameful pizza-making! On a positive note, the service was good!
Hate to rate places poorly but this pizza just wasn't good. We may have slightly higher standards coming from NY/NJ but I'm not that picky. The sauce was basically Ragu and the mozz was way over salted. The dough wasn't bad, nice and fluffy but it wasn't enough to save the other 2/3 of the pizza that was lacking. Ravs were 'toasted' but seemed like a fried frozen food to me. We were walking by here and needed something quick, ratings seemed decent so figured we'd give it a try. Wouldn't go back.
08/23/25 I am writing this review from a place of alarm - something has changed with the already perfect Margherita Pizza and we’re writing to say we hope it’s not the case. For some reason the sauce wasn’t thoroughly crushed, and the pizza was drizzled with olive oil after the baking which changed the taste of the sauce. Both are super unusual for the pizza here. My partner and I have been patrons of Life of Pie for years going at least once a month. We just hope the pizza recipe hasn’t changed because it’s our favorite. We think the pizza is better than Oven & Shaker. Please consider expanding the starters menu to include roasted olives (to compete with the olives at Oven & Shaker 🤞🏻)
My husband went inside to place our order while I sat at an outdoor table with our child. It was a slow time of day, and only about one-tenth of the seats were occupied, so me sitting down didn’t mean I was trying to reserve a table. There was no need for all of us to go inside together just to order. But the employee suddenly started yelling at me, telling me to get up immediately. She shouted loudly enough for every customer to hear, saying I wasn’t allowed to sit until after ordering. When my husband came back and asked her what was going on, she didn’t respond and just walked back inside. It felt like she was taking out her frustration on me for something that had nothing to do with us. There were plenty of empty seats, so I really don’t understand why she had to yell. Because of this woman, my child says they never want to go to downtown again.
