An absolutely delightful and delicious restaurant. Perfect for dates, special occasions, or to just treat yourself. Atmosphere was lovely and the food was spectacular. I can't wait to go back!
Run don’t walk. Beautiful space in an upper level of the building with large windows looking out into the trees and sky. You’re immediately greeted by friendly, smiling staff. Our server, Lucy went over the menu with us and checked back in if we had any questions as we were making sure we looked over each amazing item on the menu. We ordered an array of Maki and Nigiri along with a couple other items like the oysters which were phenomenal - nothing like we’ve had before. The Nigiri had beautiful flavors with perfectly tender rice. Our Maki had Tuna and crab which was then tempura fried in the lightest batter ever which gave texture without taking from the overall flavors. The St Helen’s Volcano was presented flaming and had such an amazing flavor profile to round things out. I couldn’t decide between two cocktails so Lucy suggested I put Tequila in the Good Bye Kitty instead of vodka which I loved. Lucy was super knowledgeable on the menu but also had a humorous side to her and was joining in the jokes to make our experience a memorable one! Don’t miss this spot and be sure to ask for Lucy!
This is my favorite upscale sushi place! The food is delicious and the flavor combinations of the rolls are inventive. Ambiance is great. It has a romantic lounge vibe with soft lighting, and it's quiet enough to make conversation easily. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu and can make good recommendations. It's also one of the few sushi places I've seen that consistently has blue fin tuna! The otoro is my favorite. Highly recommend!
The food and service was amazing!! The quality of the sushi was excellent and at an affordable price too! Will definitely go again if I find myself in the Portland area.
A lovely place for a date night. The atmosphere was elegant. The food was delicious and the drinks were perfectly balanced. We will be back!!
Intricate. From the little soy sauce dishes to the detailed preparation of the food. We were thoroughly impressed and will be back for more.
Our first visit to Masu Sushi was an absolute delight. With the absolutely beautiful decor with large windows encapsulated with the view of trees, to the incredibly delicious sushi rolls that melted in our mouths, this is one of the best sushi places I've been to in Portland. I'm disappointed I did not try this local restaurant earlier, it was amazing!! All the employees were really welcoming, they did an amazing job making sure tables and seats were clean and the server was welcoming.
Absolutely outstanding experience. This was hands down the best sushi I’ve ever had. I did the omakase and highly recommend it! Each course was incredibly fresh, perfectly balanced, and thoughtfully prepared. The quality of the fish, the precision of the rice, and the attention to detail in every bite really stood out. You can tell the chefs take immense pride in their craft. Excellent service and a truly memorable meal. I will absolutely be coming back and recommending this place to anyone who appreciates exceptional sushi.
I’m a total snob for sushi and this place is great, at least for the dishes we ordered. Ordered assortment of nigiri and everything had a great flavor, texture, and made well. The rice is slightly brown from the type of vinegar they use. The calamari on the happy hour menu had a great spicy after burn. Definitely coming back!
If you feel that sushi is as sushi does, then you haven’t tried Masu. Portland is a city with incredible food, and I firmly believe Masu sits right at the top of that pyramid. The ambience is unmatched - even entering, going upstairs adds to the allure. Every cut of fish melts in your mouth and lingers. The staff are knowledgeable, helpful, and… supportive? I felt like they cheered us on all evening. I can rave about the sushi, which is the best in the city, and you must try the bincho (wow), amberjack, hamachi, and it’s the next morning as I write this - I haven’t stopped thinking about the makanai. They accommodated my extremely odd dietary needs (whatever your specific dietary concerns, they can help you!), and gave our group a memory. One we won’t soon, or likely ever, forget. Thank you!! 💜 💙
A nice sushi restaurant in Portland near Pearl. Very low key entrance but when you reach to upstairs it has quite a large area. Handsomely done interior and an extensive selection of sake. Food is excellent and the happy time menu is a good bargain. All wait staff are very nice and friendly. I will come back to this place many times more.
Perhaps the best sushi restaurant in Portland. Food quality is exceptionally high, presentation is beautiful and authentic. Service level is very excellent. My server even taking the time to explain each type of fish in a dish, like the chirashi. The vibe is upscale friendly, with a beautiful view out onto the street (it’s on the second floor). Pricing is very fair for the quality, prsentation and service, even if somewhat higher than other downtown sushi restaurants. Highly recommended.
Wow, first time here this evening. We had the salmon and the bluefin tuna tasting, the rip city roll, the lioness roll, and crispy rice with tuna. It was amazing, the tastings were our favorites. The flavor pairings were unique and fresh. We had the sweet potato cake which was also a delightful dessert to end the night. The chefs wife is super sweet and service was great. Highly recommend this place!
Went here for my 25th birthday. I loved the freshness of the sushi. Great low light vibes to enjoy the food, and wonderful service. I got the Chefs Choice flight and it was delicious. Staff were attentive and had a high chair for my 11 month old.
Amazing place, fresh seafood and quality customer service. I visited from Texas and I could not recommend more, I believe you have to have reservations but I was unaware. Luckily staff was very understanding and helpful and sat me down at the bar after 15 min. The food was a little bit pricey but definitely worth it!!!! Please come out and try. Also anyone can eat here they have Gluten free and vegan options if needed🤍
Great place to eat with great chefs and outstanding food. It’s so much more fun at a sushi bar when you have engaging chefs that joke and chat. This place really has a wide open feel to it. Giant tall windows open onto the tree lined street. The setting sun painting the whole scene in golden tones and shadows. Really amazing! They have a really awesome selection of sake and the quality of the fish was superb! I’ll be back.
Absolutely wonderful food, cocktails & vibes. Sushi and small plates were soooo yummy. Amazing cocktail, wine and sake list. Atmosphere was great and so fun being up on the second floor. Servers were extremely friendly, helpful and attentive.
Hands down the best omakase we’ve ever had. Not only was the fish top notch but the creativity and pairings were daring yet rewarding. You can sip the shoyu, it’s that good, they have the most expensive nori on the market, the ginger and wasabi are good, and of course the diverse array of fish is high quality. I don’t know all the names so I can’t repeat it, but I’ll mention that the otoro is worth the admission. The duck noodle dashi soup was also a standout. Oh and the teas were fine as well The ginger ice cream monaka was a lovely dessert as well The location and vibes are very unassuming, as was the service, although the people are lovely. If not for the food you’d think it’s just a normal neighborhood casual sushi joint. You MUST treat yourself to the omakase, until they blow up it can be your own little gem here in Portland that SF and Seattle don’t have
Stopped here one night (10/28/25) after my conference. I was told by a local to go to Bamboo Sushi, but glad I found this little gem upstairs right before the rain started coming down. It was a slow night and was going to sit at the bar, but decided to head to the back table with a view of the street below. Yang was my waiter and he was great in his suggestions and service. I started off with some hot sake that hit the spot while I waited for my food. I ordered Chu Toro - medium fatty tuna and Sake Toro - King Salmon Belly to start. Then got the Rip City - spicy tuna, shishito tempura, green onion, habanero masago, and avocado before finishing my meal with Ami Aji - Japanese Horse Mackrel. All of these dishes were made with the freshest ingredients and melted in my mouth. It was my favorite meal of the week and I would recommend trying this place out.
Ended up here on accident and it was such a great experience! The atmosphere is super vibey and low lighting. Our waitress was so sweet and was able to answer all our questions and gave perfect descriptions for the food. The food.. was incredible! Quite eye pleasing but most importantly delicious. We got three appetizers and two sushi rolls, leaving us fulfilled for the night. Will be back to try more and definitely try the dessert next time.
Great sushi, fun atmosphere and great location. Took my team from work out for dinner and drinks. The service was very nice and the rolls and scallops were fantastic. Would recommend and will be back!
Terrific in all senses of the word. Appetizers, nigiri, main courses, cocktails, and of course dessert. Date night, birthday, or anniversary and you won’t be disappointed. Get a glass of Sake. Not asking, I’m telling you! (You won’t regret it!)
There are very few times you drive home from a meal, and all you can talk about is what you just experienced, and before you park the car, you’re already planning your return visit. Masu is one of those rare gems. Look forward to gracious service, astonishingly, thoughfully crafted dishes and cocktails, served in a warm and sophisticated setting. All provided by a team of dedicated and creative people - the kind of people who keep Portland’s heart beating through their good works. Go to Masu. Run to Masu. Bring your friends.
This place is now in our top 3 sushi places. The freshness of the cuisine. The staff knowledge. The environment. All perfect for our visit.
Excellent sushi in a fun, second-floor space. Our server was personable and very knowledgeable about the whole menu. She made great recommendations and the GM brought us a fun daruma when she found out we were there to celebrate our anniversary. Great experience overall. Will definitely return when visiting Portland again.
A couple of my friends and I stopped by here recently as they were randomly craving some sushi to snack on. It was a short walk from the Flock, where we were hanging out. The interior of the place is nice and spacious, and has that nice modern vibe to it. You can see the chef prepping the sushi from one end and also the bartender making drinks in the center. We ordered some stuff off both the happy hour menu and regular menu. I really did enjoy their kaarage, as it was cooked perfectly (had to order another) and their yakinku pork. The pork was super tender and full of flavor. My friends ordered a few sushi items and did enjoy it. They were impress with the uni. The service was super attentive, with our waitress checking up on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed. Overall, we had a pleasant time and would come back again.
This place is amazing! The food is absolutely delicious with a lot of variety. The service is outstanding and everyone is so polite and kind. Emily, who served us, was especially wonderful; she made us feel so comfortable and welcome. I definitely recommend this place for a great experience!
Cannot say enough good things about this restaurant! The staff are lovely and helpful, the food is amazing, and the vibes are comforting. Nothing could have made my experience here better !
Nice fancy dining room. The owner is such a friendly woman, told lots of things about the restaurant and the food. We really enjoy the happy hour. Also recommend these chef special items.
I cannot believe a place like this exists in Portland. Chef’s Michelin background is apparent. The black cod is buttery and delectable with a perfectly crispy skin and a sauce I cleaned off the plate. The current morel mushroom stuffed with shrimp mousse (and more) cooked in pork fat? To die for. The two current sushi/sashimi specials with names of fish I can’t remember (rare and from Japan)… one that was buttery soft with a light smoky flavor, and the other more toothsome, topped with creamy Hokkaido uni and delicately spicy shiso flowers. I am so happy. On my first visit, I had the scallop- crispy gyoza skirt situation with a bright tomatillo sauce, very sexy. The smoked salmon shokupan, perfectly toasted housemade japanese milk bread (I think) topped with the creamiest, dreamiest smoked salmon rillete (sp? lol sorry), crème fraiche and bright tangy yuzu gel. Ridiculous. Tuna flight— I think deserves a sexier name. Each bite in the four— so intentionally prepared to bring you so much joy. Screams Michelin. For someone who almost never orders dessert, 2/2 have ordered dessert here. Wow. Everything is stunning from beginning to end. Can’t wait to try their lunch and have many many many more sexy dinners here!!!! BIG MASU FAN!!!! 🙇♀️
Masu is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the Portland Metro area. We got referred to Masu after telling someone we intended to go to Janken to celebrate a birthday. I recently moved to Portland from Vancouver, BC, and have been trying to find a solid sushi restaurant at a reasonable price. This, I find, is something that Portland lacks in comparison to Vancouver, BC. However, I found that Masu is on par with a lot of the best sushi restaurants located in Vancouver, BC. Located in the heart of downtown Portland’s Pearl District, Masu did not disappoint. The food was amazing, the fish was fresh and all at reasonable price. Masu is also much less busier than Janken. The drinks and atmosphere was not a flamboyant as Jankens but, the food itself was much better and a more reasonable price. If you are a sushi lover and are in Portland, I highly recommend trying Masu.
We had a great time here; was catching a show at Crystal Ballroom so decided to have dinner here before the show. We ordered several different dishes; Japonista, Lioness, tempura, St Helen’s Volcano, even tried the Uni (which was harvested from my hometown Santa Barbara). Topped it off with the Sweet Potato cake. The service we received was fine, nobody was rude to us and we never felt ignored. The guy who was at the bar even brought us a seaweed salad and said it was on the house! We will definitely come back and try some of their other dishes.
What a surprise! Amazing atmosphere and amazing sushi….Im from Hokkaido and this is same grade of fresh fish you could get in US! Also best hospitality-I will promise you, coming back very soon from Seattle!!
Okay, don't make fun of me, but this was my first time having sushi. The servers were very kind and attentive, and the food was amazing! The calamari was crispy and flavorful and the gyoza was yummy and beautifully presented. I enjoyed the pearl roll and was so surprised by the incredible flavors. I can't wait to return and try more off the menu.
Drop everything and go bask in the immaculate, warm vibes of this place. The lighting alone will make you want to stay forever. 🌅 Nestled in the heart of downtown Portland, this sushi restaurant is nothing short of a transcendent experience. The moment you step inside, and make your way upstairs... you find yourself greeted by such a warm, elegant ambiance that it immediately sets the stage for the gastronomic adventure ahead.🍶 The sushi here isn’t just sushi—it is abundantly clear it is love and care translated through art. Every single dish I tasted was a true testament to the chef's skill, knowledge, and reverence for tradition, paired with an affectionate kiss of creativity. The fish is impossibly fresh. You really don't even need the soy sauce. The rice was absolute perfection. It's hard to find a sushi *experience* quite like this. 🍣 Standouts include the melt in your mouth otoro and hotate nigiri, the mind-blowing special I can't stop thinking about... the salmon flight. The salmon belly was OUT of this world with a tiny bit of yuzu gel... all I can say is I wish I could put that on absolutely everything. Then there is the miso-butter sauce on the black cod that had me in a chokehold. I could have embarrassed myself by licking the plate but held restraint. 🍽 I can't forget about dessert, the Okinawa sweet potato butter cake will have you punching the air... the salty-sweet miso caramel, again... puts you in a position to want to lick a plate. The chocolate dome with the raspberry and yuzu in the middle of the mousse is enough to push people over for. 🍋 Service is impeccable. Our server, Lucy, intuitively anticipated our needs, gave excellent and precise recommendations, enhancing the experience without ever being intrusive. Every detail, from the handcrafted ceramics to the thoughtfully curated sake menu, is a reminder that you are in the hands of extraordinary and passionate professionals who take pride in their craft. Truly, a haven for sushi aficionados and culinary explorers alike. 🥢 But WAIT, I can't forget their house-made chili crisp... I ate every tiny piece of garlic bit out of it and wish they sold jars of it. 🌶 Sorry, Lao Gan Ma... I'm already itching to go back to try the kaarage, the udon, and whatever new brilliance has landed on their specials menu. If you're still reading this review at this point, you might as well just make some reservations. 🤷🏻♀️
Has many Vegetarian options, spicy edamame and shishito peppers with their miso sauce is a must try. We tried green machine and veggie panko sushi and both are great. Highly recommend this place for vegan/vegetarians
Top of the line sushi. Great atmosphere and good service. I really enjoy every visit.
I just ate here! I love sushi. My favorites in Portland include Yuubi for the fish quality, but the ambiance isn’t quite like here. Masu has it all, ambiance, creative offerings and quality fish. All the food here is delicious including all of their dishes besides sushi, you can bring anyone here that isn’t a fan of raw fish. Can’t wait to come back!
I've been coming here for years. It is by far our favorite sushi place. The new owners updated the website and added some new menu items but kept a lot the same which I love. Very friendly and helpful staff. High quality sushi. Love that they serve sake by the masu. Looking forward to our next meal here.
I met up with some friends at Masu and we had an incredible time. The food was amazing; every dish was beautiful and every bite was a new experience. Thank you to the kind servers, host and entire team for making such a memorable evening.
Masu was really good. We found the small plates to really be the star of the show. Both the duck and miso cod plates were just mouthwatering. The sushi was very good quality too, though being completely honest it was not to the level I necessarily expected from the reviews. There is another local sushi place that my wife and I both agreed is a notch above - sans the small plates - but by all means it was a great meal. Orherwise we went for my wife’s birthday and I noted this on the reservation, I was a little bummed they didn’t acknowledge this in any way, but oh well.
Great atmosphere and service. The food was amazing! Sushi rolls, Makanai, Nemo, Lioness,we tried tasted very fresh with so many amazing flavors. Calamari was so tasty. Hamachi Nigiri was delightful. A true sushi experience for the palate.
Can I give 10s? First of all the fish was amazing. We had some knifejaw fish that was fantastic but even the more common items like the hotate and kani where prepared so nicely it took them to another level. I've never had oysters with pear but it balanced the braininess and made them truly remarkable. Great sake selection. Our server, Kaitlin, was also amazing. She walked us through each dish. All around great experience.
I took my spouse out for a date night and we both agreed on 5 stars. We sat at the sushi bar and the service from both the chefs and the server was outstanding. Best hotate and eel nigiri we have had outside Japan. The duck somen was outstanding, and the spiced apple ice cream sandwich will reappear in my dreams. My biggest regret is not taking pictures, but I was hungry.
The cozy restaurant’s on the upstairs nearby Vans store in downtown Portland. Premium sushi, friendly service but the menu is not always available, I wanted some oysters like pictures on Google unfortunately they are not. Overall, we had good experience for the first time.
I visited Masu Sushi for a Monday dinner with a 6 PM reservation. We were promptly seated at a window table as requested, which offered a nice view of the street from the second floor. A few points to note for future visitors: Atmosphere: The place was very lively and quite noisy. It is not the ideal spot if you are looking for a quiet place to have a meaningful conversation. Service & Timing: It took about 40 minutes for the first dish to arrive after ordering. Our server seemed a bit shy and wasn't particularly outgoing, but they were professional and performed their duties carefully. Food & Value: The food was decent (passing grade), but nothing stood out as extraordinary. Given the quality, the prices felt a bit high, likely due to its prime location. Overall, it's a solid spot for the view and the vibe, but be prepared for a wait and a loud environment.
This place was decently good. It is definitely on the higher end though. The serving sizes for appetizers were quite small and low value. Fish cuts were good. Staff were all friendly and prompt.
For a restaurant like Masu, we expect a little more, but not everything worked smoothly during our visit. First of all, our food service took quite long; after drinks and several happy hour items, our main plates took another 20 minutes of wait, and food quality was subpar expectation. The sashimi sampler was a little fishy and tasted foul to the mouth. The sweet shrimp nigiri had a mushy texture, felt like it had been defrosted for a little too long. The otoro sashimi fatty part was fallen apart, instead of being a whole slice. Otherwise, most of the other dishes are okay, e.g. i like the transformer mako roll.
My friend & I meet up for sushi once a month. It’s something we look forward to a lot. We both left a bit disappointed. The food here was good but the service was not. We arrived at 6:30pm on a weekday & our server was nice. We needed some time to decide, and I appreciate that he gave us space, but after he took our order we didn’t see him at our table again until we were paying. It took about 45 minutes to get our food which was nothing complex. I think it was partially due to the waiter also being the bartender. We couldn’t even catch his eye. Someone else delivered the food, which I understand isn’t uncommon… but we had mentioned to the first server that we wanted to order more after the first round. Since he never came back to check on us, I walked up to the bar & ordered it to go. I felt like I was bothering him by asking how long it would take. The table next to us which ordered after us received their food, ate, and asked for a check around the time we got our food. This is the first time in 5 years I’ve left less than a 20% tip. As for the food, it was tasty. We had sake toro which was excellent. I wish the pieces were a little larger, but salmon toro is my favorite & the flavor & texture were great. Top 3 of my salmon toro experiences. The chef plate with seared tuna was great. I forget the name of the dish (see photo), and the flavor was intense so my friend who likes heavily seasoned sashimi liked it a lot. She said her roll was ok. I ordered noodles to go and when I got home I had a few bites. It was just ok but I know it would have been better if I’d been able to eat it at the restaurant. We had planned to order a few more dishes actually. I’d like to give this place another shot in the future, but maybe for lunch instead. If I do, I will definitely update.
The sushi had good flavor, and the chef's skills were evident. The rice was perfectly cooked. However, the calamari portion was small and only mediocre in taste. Overall, the restaurant has a beautiful ambiance and offers good service, but the food was average.
