We loved Hal’s so much that we ate there for breakfast all three days we were in Portland — and that says everything. The atmosphere is incredible — fun, welcoming, and such a vibe to start your day. It feels like an experience, not just a meal. The walkability from nearby hotels makes it even better, especially when you’re visiting and want something easy and memorable. And the food? Absolutely phenomenal. Every single morning was consistently delicious, fresh, and worth coming back for again and again. Thank you for being such a big part of our time in Portland. We’ll be dreaming about breakfast here until our next trip back!
I actually wish there were 7 stars for atmosphere! This place is on a whole other level. PURE MAGIC! The food, drinks and service, EXCELLENT. I tried my friend's "Old Fashioned" and it was etherial. My steak & mushroom bites, SUPER YUM. We had a fantastic booth view. I have only been here once before, in spite of seeing and driving by it a thousand times. I definately need to make a point of coming here more often! Can't believe it took me so long to revisit. Silly me!!!
My husband and I visited during our trip. We were surprised to find this place open on Veteran's day. I truly enjoyed their corned beef hash, and grits were cooked to perfection. The Chai latte was absolutely delicious! I would also recommend the raspberry spread which had pleasant hints of herb(maybe thyme?) Great atmosphere and art. Our waiter was very efficient. We will be returning for our next trip!
Fantastic food, desserts, and drinks! We had the basque cheesecake which was amazing, and the seasonal special sandwich with the truffle fries which were divine! Definitely will come back again and recommend trying if you’re in the area.
Overall good experience :) the drink I had was perfect, the calamari we started off with I forgot to take a picture but that was perfect, and the pizza! Wow very well done! The servers are friendly and it was nice seeing the open floor plan of the kitchen and seeing the wood fire stove for the pizza :) great location!
Stopped by Hal’s Cafe earlier this month and really enjoyed it. I had the Margherita Flatbread and a Dark and Stormy — both were super tasty. The flatbread was fresh and had great flavor, and the drink was spot on. Service was solid too — friendly and quick. Definitely a place I’d come back to.
Food was great. Waitress was super friendly! The atmosphere was so cozy. Even my picky 6 year old loved the food.
Food was great and staff were quick! The eggs Benedict was delicious! Definitely recommend the potato's as a side
Amazing food!! We flew into town on Christmas night and they were very nice about accommodating us, late at night, without a reservation. They were also great about communicating what would work for the food allergies in our party. We loved it so much that we had to make sure we went back again before the end of our short trip to Portland. Get the roasted fingerling potatoes -- the chef has some incredible creativity with those potatoes omgosh...🤤
An icon of Portland and on our radar since we moved here, Zeus Café did not disappoint us! The atmosphere inside is cute and cozy and ample outdoor space as well. We got there during happy hour wich had some great deals. Se started off with some beverages and the black and white fries. My partner had the chicken and waffles and I went with the Tillies turkey club. The service, the food, and the vibes were all on point and we will be back for sure.
Both meals were amazing! Burgers are not my daughter's fave meal but she was really impressed and said it was good. I had the steelhead and it was perfect and flavorful. I will be back if I'm ever in Portland again
We came here on the tail end of our trip to Portland for a late last minute snack and were pleasantly surprised! The drinks were the best we’ve had in Portland all week and the steak salad was amazing!
We had a relaxing and wonderful lunch here. We sat inside and enjoyed the interesting art and beautiful stained glass. The chandeliers really need dusting but other than that everything was perfect. We shared two small plates that were perfectly cooked and delicious. Wait staff was attentive. Service is a little slow but we weren't in a hurry.
We were here with our 2 young kids. We were greeted by our server with a warm smile. The server gave us a table away from the crowd so that our kids won't disturb other people. We felt really comfortable sitting at that table where we don't need to constantly remind our kids to lower their voices. The server also gave our kids some crayons so my 3 years old kid have something to do. The food was really good, both my husband and I enjoyed our food. Our kids enjoyed their food too. The service was exceptional, food was amazing, and the restaurant is kids friendly (Kids menu, high chairs, change table in BOTH washrooms). We will definitely come again if we have a chance.
My visit to Mcmenamins Hal's was a delightful surprise during my Oregon trip. We were headed to Powell's bookstore but arrived before it opened, so I checked my map and found Hal's just up the street. What a lucky find! The food was absolutely phenomenal! The Jalapeno cheese grits were a standout and a must-try. We felt truly spoiled by the delicious dishes served. My only gripe was the $4 upcharge for chicken instead of pork in my burrito. Nevertheless, the staff were friendly, and the overall dining experience was amazing. I will definitely be returning. Thank you once again from Ohio!"
Came in for a late night dinner, and it did not disappoint. Service was nice and prompt. My burger was bursting with flavor and my friend really liked her ravioli. It's in a nice corner of downtown too. Like any other McMenamins restaurant, it's always a good experience.
Food was fantastic, not too heavy, super flavorful. The housemade hot sauce was amazing as was the coffee. Service was great and the outdoor bistro seating is lovely.
I’m not one to go to the same place for food multiple times on a vacation but we went for breakfast almost everyday! Everything we ate was a 10/10 and every single one of the service staff was so incredibly funny and nice! The drinks? Delicious. The food? Incredibly tasty. If you’re staying at the hotel make sure to get a drink at the bar before heading to the soaking pool!
We came for a complimentary breakfast package. The staff was very friendly and the environment in the morning is different in a good way! I'm not usually a breakfast or morning person. We ordered the breakfast burrito and eggs benedict and they were both delicious! I highly recommend taking the time for breakfast as it's quite worth it!
Hal’s Cafe was delightful!! This restaurant was within walking distance of Moxy Hotel. We absolutely loved the food. We stopped in for breakfast, and we were so happy with the choice. My sister and I got the eggs Benedict (spicy yummy hollandaise), and my brother got the classic breakfast. The portions were big, more than enough food! Service was great.
My family and I enjoyed the brunch offerings. The chicken chilaquiles was delicious. The steak salad was also fantastic with the fried onions. Bloody Mary and Mimosa completed the meal. We also observed that the kitchen and service crew were running very smoothly. There is a clear hierarchy. We will definitely be returning.
The food is exquisite. Michelin quality at McMenamins prices. There is so much care and detail in the crafted cocktails. Our server was very sweet and friendly. We practically closed the place out but never felt rushed.
Included Dinner & Breakfast in our room package at the Crystal Hotel. Both were amazing. Wait staff are the right amount of friendly and attentive.
Love McMenamins... this is #5 different location we have visited. Always great food!
Did 2 beer flights and got to try almost everything on the menu. I wish I had had time to try some of their unique cocktails but breakfast was really good! I got the Mt. Hood scramble with Como toast and country potatoes. The portion size was perfect, the flavors were spot on, and the venue was nice. Definitely would go back again!
I am never disappointed in McMenamins. All locations serve top notch food for a reasonable price. Breakfast was spicy and just like how I love my tacos. Zeus Cafe offers veggie sausage links, so I sub this to replace the pork links. Server was wonderful. We also stayed at the hotel and got food to go for dinner. As always, I never feel like I over pay and always am impressed with the chefs that McMenamins hires for all locations. The server that took my to go order asked me if I was a employee because of how I was ordering 🙃. Nah, just a huge fan!
The BLT is the best I've had. On the menu it's says, "slab bacon" and they mean it. Loved going to the Zeus for lunch. Also loved an afternoon ritual of their creme brulee with a nice cup of coffee. Enjoying the dessert and coffee while watching people going by on the street was a great experience. Going back to stay in October and looking forward to my little afternoon rituals.
Great place to stay, or just for a bite and some great drinks!!! We stayed in the Modest mouse room!!! Road traffic was an issue at night, but they give ear plugs. Not related to McMenamins, but I would park in a garage, tha crows are horrible and our car was covered in droppings!!!
The McMenamins Zeus Cafe is a swanky little kitchen/bar attached to the hotel with plenty of treats. Throughout my stay, I had a few items: yogurt with granola, a Bloody Mary, a gin and tonic, maple brussel sprouts, and a beer. Everything other than the Bloody Mary was to my liking. The granola and yogurt paired with fresh berries were a delight to consume, and despite it being a light breakfast pair, it got me through a groggy morning. The Bloody Mary had some unique garnishes, such as a tomato slice, a clove of garlic, and bell peppers, that failed to appetize, but the drink as a whole was solid. The maple brussel sprouts are some of the best I've had. I found the earthiness of the sprouts to be well-balanced by the sweetness of the maple dressing. All in all, I would return for more of their bites. I did find the prices a smidge too high to consider having a meal, given one's proximity to plenty of restaurants. However, the atmosphere and array of lounge rock music is a rustic delight to enjoy. Cheers!
Stumbled upon this restaurant as we were strolling around Portland and stopped due to the great jazzy music and spacious patio seating. We had to wait around 30 minutes to be seated but it went by fairly quickly since we checked out the shops across the street. I had a pollen-something drink made with gin and it was absolutely delicious. I’m a fan of intense flower flavors and this drink was right on point, it even came with an edible flower which added a little extra flower flavor and flair. They thankfully serve brunch into the afternoon so we were able to order from that menu. I had the Slabtown sandwich and it was a good option for when you’re wanting brunch but need something more filling. The side of potatoes was pretty good but definitely elevated by the ketchup, it wasn’t just regular ketchup, it tasted more vinegary and spice-filled. Our server was also very nice and attentive!
The staff was polite and welcoming, and I loved the cosy seating arrangement. The pizza I ordered was fresh, although a bit smaller in size than expected. I requested for hot water instead of cold and the staff was happy to oblige. Overall, very nice restaurant and a wonderful service.
Very nice cafe in Portland Downtown, plenty of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I went there for a breakfast and I liked the food, the place and the atmosphere. The service was great.
Sat outside - sturdy area even in wind, heat helps. Service very friendly and all was chill on this Sunday night. Beet salad good size and fried chicken come surrounded by gravy - so good. Monday morning outside, chill and relaxed service crew was perfect. Nice city vibe sitting outside in the sun.
We met friends from out of town and enjoyed our meal. The waitress was great. On top of everything and spunky but not over done. She left us to enjoy our conversation but checked back. As per most McMenamins some good art and funky design.
Stayed at the hotel so had dinner last night (forgot the pictures) and breakfast this am. I think for the price the portion sizes are adequate... Although nothing all that elevated. For dinner I had the Aztec salad with flank steak. The flavor was good, the meat was perfect, but the salad... Mostly lettuce, maybe a teaspoon of the corn and black bean salsa, exactly 3 halves of the smallest cherry tomatoes I'd ever seen (literally small grape size). The avocado was not ripe and very hard. The dressing was just the right amount and covered everything well without over saturating. Breakfast as pictured, was the country fried steak and eggs with cottage potatoes (smashed reds, deep fried, and seasoned). I ordered the eggs over medium, clearly these are over easy, no firmness to the yolk at all. The steak was piping hot and as you can see took up nearly a quarter of the plate. However, the gravy... I was so excited, I love housmade gravy, but this has onions in it! I was as not expecting that and since I don't like onions it was ruined on me. The potatoes were the best part... Not even any butter on the English muffin. The bloody mary was delicious, but only served with a lime wedge as garnish. The garnish is half the experience of the bloody mary! Not even an olive! Was not served with a straw either. Overall a bit expensive for the quality, but not the quantity. Breakfast: country fried steak, bloody mary, and cold brew at the end, total with tip $50.33
A little disappointed with the pizza I got here. As you can see from the photo, there was a lot of very thick crust and the dough was generally too thick for my liking. The toppings however were good - I had the "fall equinox" which had Brussels sprouts and butternut squash. Overall, disappointing for the high price, but the restaurant setting itself is cool and the toilets were charming! There was also only one vegan main course available, which is a bit archaic in my opinion.
Had live music and the whole street closed off. Very friendly service and great environment!
I had a nice breakfast at this McMenamins location. The wait was a bit long, and the eggs were overcooked. The restaurant was busy, though; there was only one cook it looked like. I was compensated for the error. The food was tasty, especially the hash browns. Very enjoyable.
The atmosphere and decor is awesomely eclectic, just as every McMenamins. The service from everyone was fantastic, and the place was not very busy for a late Saturday breakfast. Eggs were cooked well and had great flavor, as did the bacon which was extremely crispy. Espresso was good, and all items were served quickly. Prices were reasonable, so overall a great value for a quick small morning bite.
Service took a little long but I would say that’s pretty typical of McMenamins in general. Our server was very apologetic and kind. The Black and White fries, cheese pizza, bread plate, side salad, cheese plate, Brie sauce tots with pork belly, steak salad, cheesecake, coconut cake and coffee was what we ordered. The fries and the steak salad got the best response at my table. The coconut cake was the most disappointing with delicious cream cheese frosting but it was a bit dry. For drinks I highly recommended the amaretto sour with extra cherries and blackberry cider.
Cosy atmosphere, friendly service, generous portions and a great selection of beers (including fruit beers) on tap at Zeus Cafe. MrB had the Crystal Delux Burger & a Dr Owl Sour beer. The girls and I shared loaded taters tots, meatballs with spaghetti squash and fried chicken on buttermilk biscuits with sauted kale. I also tried the Cherry cider which was lovely. Note they take cash but can't give change.
We came here for some breakfast and drinks and Kaylee (spelling might be wrong) really made the experience here. We ordered two bloody Mary's and to be honest, flavor wise, it was one of the best my fiancé and I ever had. She was very friendly, had good humor, I would return if I wasn't an out-of-towner just because of her. The food I was a little less than impressed with. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, the biscuits were colossal and didn't really have enough gravy for the amount of biscuit given but it was pretty tasty. My fiancé ordered some kind of eggs, I think it's called Has amigas and it was good but the portion for him was really small, he could've eaten three more servings of it. It's a quaint place, cozy inside and friendly atmosphere. Limited menu but for drinks especially this is the place to go.
The food I've tried is good, not necessarily great, but I do like the loaded tator tots. Drinks are okay depending on who makes them. There is one bartender I'm not a fan of as he lacks the interaction a normal bartender comes by naturally. Will I be back... Sure. Am I in a rush? Not really.
I think for the experience alone this place is worth your visit. They have a great cocktail menu and a creative food menu. Really nice and quick staff. The restaurant is just really cool, too. The way it’s decorated and the set up make it perfect for a low key meal. They have a big outdoor seating area as well, but I loved sitting inside in a booth. The only reason I didn’t do 5 stars was my breakfast tacos were a little underwhelming. Still good. But everything else was great.
01/11/2025 (Sat) We had the Three Rocks Rum Banana French Toast ($16) and the Slabtown Breakfast Sandwich ($16). The French toast, made with brioche bread, was soft and delicious, but it came with a lot of syrup already poured over it, and the bananas seemed to be cooked in syrup rather than served fresh. This made the dish overly sweet — I would have preferred fresh fruit instead. The bagel was served on its own without any sides, but it was very tasty. It seemed like the staff was a bit short-handed, as it took a while to request coffee refills. I also noticed that some dishes were left sitting on the counter for so long that the plates became too hot to touch. The food itself looked great, so I’d like to try other dishes in the future. But for today, it’s a 3-star experience. 01/18/2025 (Sat) There was an authentic pizza oven, so today we decided to enjoy the A Love Supreme Pizza (12in, $21) and Avocado Toast ($14), paired with a Pumpkin Buttered Rum ($14) and a Coke ($4.25). Everything was delicious, and we had a great time!
Very confusing place so I’ll explain Their downstairs is called Al’s Den The upstairs is Hal’s cafe but it was previously named Zeus Cafe (but they haven’t changed the signage) Went for happy hour food and drinks The cocktails were straight up undrinkable. So strong and bad flavors (monkey puzzle julep and the seasonal passion fruit mule) Meat and cheese board was good Flatbread was not that good I liked sitting outside though
Nice cafe in a nice part of town. You can come by for a full dining experience or just hang out with friends over a cup of coffee and desert. I enjoy my visits coming here, I hope you do too.
Ok breakfast, many options. Both the scramble and eggs Benedict were ok. The sautéed Spanish on the side had lots of yellow leaves and did not taste good. Some of the side fruits taste stale.
Very disappointing. Arrived with my party of 7, waited to be seated then no hostess came. Tried to seat ourselves at empty tables but was told by the waitress that we needed to wait for the hostess. Then after waiting another 5 min the same waitress came and told us that it would be 20 min because she was the only waitress in the whole restaurant. Ridiculous. We then just left and won’t be back.
If you want hash browns whiter than Portland, this is the place to go for breakfast. McMenamins, stick to burgers, and even then y'all don't do a really great job. I thought if I tried a location attached to a hotel it would be a little better than this. The eggs benedict, worst we've had! I would have liked to know what the hollandaise sauce tasted like. I've left more sauce on a paper towel than was on this dish. Chorizo tacos. 😞 First you fill a blue corn shell with what can only be described as wet cabbage and Tabasco, then you try to convince us that the sausage is chorizo? No way. That sausage was country sausage appropriating Mexican culture. I can't even really give an extra star for the staff. The one time I was asked if I wanted more coffee it was almost like a verbal assault. Should have went to McDonald's, at least I could have expected the disappointment that way.
