If you're planning to reserve a spot for a large group dinner, it's best to plan ahead. We booked OX a full month in advance for our company holiday party, and the preparation for our set menu was executed flawlessly. The place has a fantastic vibe, with that classic open-fire grill aroma hitting you as soon as you walk in. The staff kept the energy up and provided attentive service throughout the busy night. The food was outstanding— the steaks practically dissolved in your mouth, and the maple-glazed pork was tender and juicy, quickly becoming a team favorite. Now, let’s talk drinks: the cocktail game here is on point. The drinks were expertly mixed and easy to enjoy. It’s clear the bartenders don’t cut corners. Overall, it was a top-notch dining experience and a perfect way to celebrate the holidays with the team. Highly recommended if you’re after quality food and a lively atmosphere in PDX
This an amazing food experience place. I wouldn't say is a pricey because is gourmet food, from the baguette, chimichurri, salads, entrees as empanadas, of course the meat (Argentinians cannot be beat on it) finally the desserts are especial. Everything has a special taste. The service is a high end place kind, Shawn our server was amazing, he explained us every plate. It's not an expensive restaurant because I deserve it!
Our best meal in Portland. No reservation? Walk in early, join the wait list, and grab a seat at the bar in the back while you wait for a restaurant table/bar seat. Service was excellent. Skirt steak was among the best we’ve had, ever. We’ll be back.
This spot definitely requires a reservation. We tried to drop in on a random Monday and it was quite full. Had to wait 30 mins to get a seat at the bar, which is totally fine but unexpected for a strange time. The complementary cauliflower soup from the chef absolutely blew my mind. It was like a delicate potato chowder in the best way. The hint of chili oil was insanely good. It was perfect. I wish I could order it by itself. On a follow up visit, we got mushroom soup which was also very delicious, it had paprika. Warm house made sesame baguette ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - that baguette was genuinely warm - had the most perfect texture - salted butter: so soft, tasted milky and delicious - would reorder this if this is the only way to get chimmichri Tripe and octopus ⭐⭐⭐ - the octopus was 5 stars for me, but I'm starting to question if I'm a tripe girl - my boyfriend noted there was something missing, he seemed more content with more chimmichri on it, but not entirely - the octopus sells the dish though, it's the best octopus I've ever had ♥️Clam chowder with bone marrow ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - not super spicy - only the jalapenos were - I don't know if the bone marrow gave me much but I liked the dish over all - wasn't overly heavy - the clams were fresh ❤️Beef empanada ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - what I came in for - sweet and savory - wish the habanero was more spicy - needed get chimmichri for this Heirloom tomato salad ⭐⭐✨ - my boyfriend loves this but I was just ok with it - specifically some of the tomatoes were a little mushy to me but it was well seasoned and executed - I like the medley of vegetables too - the peppers had the tiniest bit of kick to them too bc they were in season! Roasted beet salad ⭐⭐⭐ - it was good but didn't blow my mind - it was just ok Taretare ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - it was a special so I'm unsure if they'd ever have it again - so amazing, I loved the yuzu and the seasoning - the adorable Brazilian bread balls with it were perfect Potatoes ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - really good - wish it was more crispy but a lot of them were perfect - the sauce was horseradish in the best way possible Mixed green Salad ⭐⭐✨ - just ok - little too salty for me - exactly what you'd expect but salty Rib eye ⭐⭐⭐✨ - you know? It didn't blow my mind. I might need to try another steak but I've come to realize I'm rarely impressed by steaks at resturaunts --- dessert --- ❤️Dulce de leche tres leches ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I adored every aspect of this - the dulce de leche was a little savory - the cake was certainly legitimate tres leches, but it wasn't moist moist which is totally fine, what passed for me was that it wasn't a sponge cake - offset in a good way by how fresh it was - the whip cream tasted hand whipped and wasn't sugary - the merange also wasn't so sugar - just a delightful dish
Octopus and Tripe was absolutely amazing. Never have had poached Octopus but its now the only way to do it. Perfect texture. Oysters were locally from Washington. Very meaty and subtle ocean flavour. Shucked perfect, not a single bit of shell. The rib eye was solid. Cooked correctly. The wood flavors from the wood stove was an awesome touch. (White Oak)
This is the most delightful place. Every year, every time I am here, I have a great time. I spent my first wedding anniversary here and honestly, everyone is delightful and made the experience awesome. I feel lucky to live in a city with such delicious food. I always do the chowder but I did the soup special per recommendation and was not disappointed. 10/10. I recommend ox to anyone who wants a kind, charming, and authentic Portland dinner. Thank you to the staff of ox. Yall have outdone yourself once again.
Absolutely loved dining here! Great service and amazing food! Would recommend the filet, maple-brined pork chops, and smoked bone marrow chowder. Perfect for special occasions.
Reservation recommended! Ox has exceptional service; water glass is always filled, updates on your meal progress, table wiped down in between courses. This is an expensive meal for almost everyone (this should be obvious). The food is very, very good. Meat was cooked excellent, other courses were all good as well and dessert was a sweet treat bonus. Would absolutely go again for a special occasion!
Came here to visit my friend Jackie who worked the grill for us. I didn’t know what to expect but was blown away by the atmosphere, food, and friendliness of the staff. Everything we ate was cooked perfectly and I had a wonderful time. Highly recommend to anyone in the area.
Not a huge fan of Portland.. though, it seems like it might be getting cleaned up. However, this spot is a NECESSITY if in town. We didn’t have a res but they squeezed us in. Got to sit right next to the open oven/grill. Cool experience and great service.
Argentinian inspired, wood fired cooking with rich, smoky aromas wafting from the open grill. Reservations are highly recommended as the wait can be long for walk-ins. We booked about a month in advance for a party of 5, and still ended up at a table where one of us ended up at the corner of the table (the unofficial fifth seat squeezed in at the edge). The grilled meats were the star of the show. They were tender, expertly seasoned, and perfectly complemented by the chimichurri. Special mention goes to the clam chowder, served with whole Manila clams and a grilled bone marrow. The marrow is scooped into the soup, adding a deep, smoky richness that really set it apart. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the staff was clearly passionate about the food they serve. Overall, Ox delivered a memorable dining experience. It’s a restaurant that lives up to its reputation.
Nice anniversary dinner, great service. My wife gets brownies points for choosing this location. The host and the waiter were super nice and helped with their menu.
Visiting Portland for work and was told OX has one of the best steaks in town. After my meal, I can understand why they have this reputation! Delicious! I loved seeing a raging fire in the dining room grilling up all the meats. It truly showcases what OX is all about and puts it front and center. Also that clam chowder was amazing. It’s not often I call soup amazing but who knew adding roasted bone marrow to clam chowder would work so well?? You scoop the bone marrow right into the chowder and then leave the bone in the bowl so it can lend its smoky flavor into the soup. Brilliant. Dessert was the chocolate olive oil cake. Rich and decadent with wonderful texture. It was a great meal and I am grateful for the recommendations!
To the untrained eye, it’s easy to overlook the countless little details that made our experience so exceptional. I noticed the intentionality infused into every single part of it — from the attentiveness of the staff to the warmth of the atmosphere. And the food!? …Exceptional. I’ve dined at plenty of upscale restaurants, but few have left such an impression. If you’re an aspiring restaurant owner/server/manager etc., do yourself a favor and watch this team in action. It’s a masterclass. To our server Sean — thank you for making our anniversary dinner a truly memorable one. Bravo!
Great experience. Very attentive staff. 20% Gratuity was included in our bill and, for the first time ever, that tip was appropriate. The food was delicious. We had been there about 5years ago and it’s better this time. We had table tugged away.
Had long been looking to come to Ox and had a lovely first visit. The restaurant layout is unique, with an outdoor space, indoor dining area, and an another sub dining space which is where we were sat. Noise volume was not crazy high but it was a busy evening for a Monday. The service was excellent. Our server did a great job explaining the menu and helped steer our ordering which was much appreciated. She was attentive and kind, really all you can ask for. Food overall was quite tasty. I might just order differently if I were to go back. Standout for me was definitely the chowder. I’m not sure honestly how much the marrow added but damn that broth was heavenly. Perfect to go with the fresh bread. We also got the halibut special which was delicious. When it came to meats we did the asado for 2 and the lamp shoulder. Everything was seasoned beautifully and cooked well. The skirt steak was a standout from the meat side and the portions were large. The spare ribs were a bit of a disappointment being pretty fatty and the blood sausage just isn’t for everyone. Next time around I would probably go for more of an incidental steak vs ordering the asado. It’s also just a ton of meat to take down. The dessert was a sorbet at chocolate olive oil cake which was nice as well. Overall tasty, just may order differently in the future. Appetizers all seemed like great options!
What a great place. We slipped in without a reservation and enjoyed a great experience. The staff was prompt, friendly and knowledgeable. Our steaks were awesome, prepared perfectly.
I would say this restaurant is our second favorite in Portland. This place offers a great environment, yummy drinks, and food. The service is above and beyond. Prices are reasonable. Every dish we had was perfectly and flavorfully made. Highly recommend this place if you are seeking a good place to dine. They have many options if you are not a meat-heavy eater and are very accommodating to allergies.
Absolutely amazing. Every dish perfectly prepared and presented. Our waiter Dane had the best recommendation for the off menu dish Halibut wing tip. My amazing girlfriend took me here to celebrate a promotion and I could not have asked for a better experience. If you haven't been GO!
Fast and kind service! We had dinner here for Easter weekend with some friends and we all were very happy with our food and server. I’m vegan, so it was great that they had a separate vegan menu!!!! We are very satisfied with this restaurant, the portions were big, so we all got stuffed! We’ll definitely come back here in our next trip to Portland :)
They have the best service quality I’ve ever had. I can feel their attention to details by how they are cleaning the table all the time and providing extra utensils, etc. The dishes were a bit too salty for us but still tastes good. I really enjoyed watching their oven flames which has fantastic ventilation. The tres leches cake was the best part. The sweetness is controlled and we loved its texture variations.
This place was our favorite place we dined in, when visiting Portland. The sweetbread and the mushroom soup is a must. The baguette hits every nerve bread is supposed to hit. The short rib, the ribeye, the lamb shoulder, everything was perfect. Our server was from Chicago so she was awesome :) they were accommodative to our earlier time request and friendly to our well behaved child
I went here with my two friends and we all were loving every second! The food, service, and atmosphere were all top tier. I would recommend this place for anyone who is celebrating an anniversary or birthday. The food was all delicious and drinks were great as well.
Truly one of the best restaurants in Portland. Definitely our new favorite steak house. The ribeye was amazing. I loved the asparagus as well. The Tres Leche was also amazing. The Absinthe Root Beer was great. The bone marrow clam chowder was delicious but didn't taste at all like clam. I hate clams, but loved the soup. My wife loves clams and clam chowder, but though she enjoyed the soup, said it wasn't clam chowder, but a potato soup with clams added to the top. The beef rib was good, but get the ribeye instead! Oh and the staff was 7 stars. They gave better service than some Michelin restaurants.
We got the beef empanada, cheese empanada, clam chowder with bone marrow, Argentinian barbeque for two, a handful of cocktails, and their hazelnut torte. The clam chowder and skirt steak were my favorite from the BBQ. Although the empanadas were very good too! Would recommend.
We had the clam chowder, duck, pork, carrots and beet salad that were all fantastic. The service was prompt and atmosphere was very relaxed.
Wonderful restaurant! Everything we ordered was divine and the service was like a 5 star restaurant, cleaning up between plates and checking on us at the right times. Definitely one to check out!
Our server really made our experience excellent, great recommendations and explained menu throughly. Also made suggestions for the cocktails as I was swapping out for tequila. Chimichurri was divine paired with the meats and dessert was delicious as well.
Best steaks we've had in a long while. I am so excited for our next visit. They have the classy vibe down without being pretentious. Staff is friendly and very courteous. The food is what you will keep going back for. Get their clam chowder and skirt steak! It's worth the money 💰
One of my favorite restaurants in Portland. Creative menu, fresh ingredients, and wonderful presentation. If your looking for a memorable and exceptionally flavorful steak experience, look no further than OX.
Amazing food! The restaurant also has a good ambiance and the meats are cooked from a wood fire grill! The skirt steak and pork chop was good! Porkchop was very flavorful and well seasoned. Dessert was also really good
Ox is absolutely incredible! It was my first time in Portland and a colleague recommended this as a must-visit destination before I left for the airport. I ordered the oysters, skirt steak & garlic prawns. It was, without a doubt, one of the best meals of my life. Combined with the phenomenal service & beautiful ambience, I'll definitely be back.
Everything was absolutely delicious. Flank and ribeye steaks were perfect and came out so fast! but the real stars of the show were the “from the garden” selections. The radicchio salad was perfectly butter and spicy, the vinaigrette perfectly balanced. The beet salad was absolutely stunning, the maple glazed carrots were out of this world!!! Cannot recommend enough. The service was great, our food was packaged up for us after each course and brought back to us at the end of the meal. We had a great time.
First off, Ox has a private parking lot... that is a huge plus considering the restaurant is on an arterial road. Staff was professional, attentive, friendly and efficient. We had outdoor seating and it was fantastic. The food... simply, delectable. There was not one dish we didn't like or love, every dish was incredibly well prepared and tasty. The spicy beef empanada was perfect to start off the palate. I didn't get to taste the oysters but, everyone else loved it. The clam chowder was topped with a bone with delicious marrow... different for me but, I loved it. I'm very glad I ordered the maplle-brined pork chops because it was absolutely delicious. We will absolutely be coming back.
One of the best restaurants I've been to. The food was delicious and definitely worth every penny. The service and the drinks were also very good and made the experience that much better. Hope to try some more dishes next time.
Ox did not disappoint! I’ve heard about this place for a while but don’t eat meat often, so I was hesitant. That said, there are many great non-meat options to choose from if you’re vegetarian! Vegetarian options were also full-sized plates and not just sides. I’d highly recommend to meat and veggie lovers alike!
My husband took me to Ox for my 45th birthday at the beginning of December, because if I’m aging, I’m doing it with premium beef, strong cocktails, and good ambience. From the jump, Jen (Jennifer if you’re being respectful) understood the assignment. Impeccable service. Warm, confident, attentive without hovering. And as people of color in a fine-dining space, let me say this plainly: there was no weird energy, no side-eye, no “prove you belong here” nonsense. Just excellence. We noticed. We appreciated. We tipped accordingly. Now the food. Listen. That beef tartar special? Dangerous. The kind of dish that makes you sit up straighter and mind your manners. The filet mignon was cooked with authority. The endive salad had no business being that good. The potatoes were rich, comforting, and clearly raised right. We ordered half the menu and not a single plate came out lacking discipline or flavor. Here’s how you know Ox really did its thing: my husband’s birthday is a month after mine, and we always try somewhere new. But between Jen’s service and that menu, Ox said, “You’ll be back.” And yes. We will, in fact, be back this weekend. Hands down the best dining experience we’ve had in Portland in years. Ox understands quality, respect, and how to treat grown folks with grown palates. Five stars. No notes.
This was easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had. You could stumble in (with a reservation) and order ANYTHING off the menu and you’ll love it. The service was also impeccable, I felt taken care of the moment I walked in to the moment I left. Be prepared to spend some money, it’s worth it! Ordered: maple braised pork chop, Dungeness crab bruschetta, garlic prawns, and a sesame baguette. 100/10.
Last night I finally made it to Ox Restaurant in Portland, a James Beard Award–winning spot that came highly recommended and it absolutely lived up to the hype. From the moment we arrived, the service set the tone for the night. Dane, our server, was fantastic, and Richard, the Assistant General Manager, kindly helped us adjust our reservation from 9:00 to 7:30, which turned out to be perfect because this is the kind of meal you want to take your time with. The kitchen welcomed us with a small amuse-bouche: a warm potato soup with chive oil that was simple, comforting, and incredibly flavorful. After that first bite, I knew we were in for something special. We ordered a carafe of Malbec on draft so we could enjoy wine throughout the meal, and then started with the clam chowder with smoked bone marrow, which might honestly be one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. The clams were tender and served in their shells, the chowder was silky and rich, and the smoked bone marrow added a deep, savory flavor that made the dish unforgettable. Next time, I’m ordering the sesame baguette to dip into it. For dinner, we shared: • Pork chop • Ribeye (medium rare+) • Potatoes with horseradish aioli • Roasted carrots It was the perfect combination: two proteins, two vegetables, and everything cooked and seasoned beautifully. The ribeye and pork chop were both exceptional. They brought out chimichurri on the side, which honestly wasn’t necessary because everything was so flavorful, but it was so good we used it anyway. We ended the night with the chocolate sticky toffee pudding, with subtle orange notes that made it feel rich but balanced. I was completely full and still somehow made room for dessert! The food, the ambiance, the wine, the service was truly a 10/10 experience. Elevated but not pretentious, thoughtful but still warm and inviting. One of those meals you keep thinking about long after it’s over. Already planning my next visit for the duck and maybe the mixed grill for two. Portland dining continues to impress.
Probably the best meal we’ve had in the PNW. Every dish exceeded the mark. Crab bruschetta, cheese empanadas, smoked bone marrow clam chowder (winner), gnudi, and maitake mushrooms with veal shortbread. Each dish was their own world.. ah, and the tres leches was superior. But the real winner was our server Vivek. Outstanding service and hospitality! Thanks.
We've visited OX a few times now and every time we have went, the staff, service and food has been exceptional! The Bread, Clam Chowder, Skirt Steak and Pork Chops is usually the regular items we order and there really is no other comparable place that we have been to that has these delicious unique flavors! We HIGHLY recommend! Book early for your reservations!
Went here for the first time after a recommendation. Was celebrating an anniversary. The staff was amazing and really nice. Seems like it’s been a while that I’ve noticed such nice staff. Had the salmon dish and enjoyed it. Absolutely loved the potatoes that comes as a side. Definitely took the leftovers home. Only thing that I’d recommend and making just a little more space between tables. Feels like you’re sitting really close. But it’s a smaller place so seating might be tight. Would absolutely come back and try more dishes. Thank you !!
Scheduled dinner celebration for 10 people with Ox set meal. We started 30 min before our reservation in the Whey Bar. The bartender was great & came up to everyone to take drink orders despite being busy with other diners. "T", the hostess, was very accommodating. She helped us surprise my husband with a table setup that included a framed 8x10 baby pic and individual place cards before our party was seated. Sarah, our waitress was great! Fantastic food, service and environment. Plenty of food served hot given the set family style meal. One person with dietary restrictions had entire meal specially prepared. We were loud, standing to give speeches and no complaints. Ox is where I have gone for past bdays - my husband was glad he chose it for this special occasion/party. Thank you Ox for your consistency over the years. You have never disappointed.
This is a good place for a Fancy Dinner. All dishes are ordered a la carte. I would recommend making a reservation for a group over two people. I ordered their famous clam chowder, the beef short ribs and the pear salad. The clam chowder is extremely rich and deeply smoky. The beef short rib is a chewy grilled beef, which I personally prefer to fall-off-the-bone. I enjoy gnawing on the bones. The pear salad was also very rich from the bleu cheese and lovely vinaigrette.
• Halibut with Ponzu Sauce: The fish had crispy skin, but the ponzu sauce was a bit too sour for our liking. • Clam Chowder: This was a highlight! The smoky flavor from the bone marrow added a nice depth. • Beef Skirt: The meat was thinly sliced and flavorful, but a bit too salty. • Pork Chop: Surprisingly delicious! The only downside was the excess maple syrup, which made it a bit too sweet. The service was really good. The vibe at the restaurant was really nice, perfect for dates. I highly recommend sitting at the grill bar, as you get to see the chefs cooking the steak up close, and it’s especially cozy during the wintertime.
MUST TRY - Baked Ricotta with Grapes - Clam Chowder with Bone Marrow - Skirt Steak with Chimichurri PASS - Short Rib: Seasoning was good but it was a bit too dry without a sauce and hard to eat - Prawns: boring - Cheese Empanada - Hazelnut Torte: the torte itself tasted uncooked but the ice cream and honey crisps were good
We recently visited Ox Restaurant and were eager to try their creative menu, which had comforting classics and adventurous dishes. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and our server was attentive throughout the evening. While some dishes truly stood out, others fell short of expectations. Here’s a breakdown of our experience: Amuse Bouche (Soup): The meal started with a wonderful amuse-bouche, likely made from butternut squash. The flavors were vibrant, and the texture was smooth—an excellent way to begin the experience. Clam Chowder with Smoked Bone Marrow: The clam chowder was quite enjoyable, though different from the creamier versions I’m accustomed to. This one had a lighter consistency, with nice flavors enhanced by a spicy kick from the jalapeños. Roasted Beet Salad: The roasted beet salad was tasty. The tangy miso lemon dressing paired beautifully with the earthy beets, and the tempura bits added a savory crunch that tied it all together nicely. Maple-Glazed Heirloom Carrots: Unfortunately, this dish fell short for me. I was expecting roasted carrots glazed in a maple sauce, and I thought the carrots would be placed on top of the goat cheese. Instead, the carrots were chopped and placed in a bowl. They absorbed the maple sauce, but they didn’t have a true glazed texture. The combination with goat cheese also didn’t work well—the flavors didn’t complement each other. Asado Argentino for Two: This platter offered a variety of grilled items, and overall, it was a mixed experience: * Skirt Steak: Outstanding! The exterior was perfectly crispy, while the interior was tender and flavorful. This dish alone would bring us back. * Short Rib: It was rich and tender, and it melted in my mouth. A sprinkle of flaky salt could have elevated it further. * Chorizo: Decent, but I was hoping for a bolder, more pronounced flavor. * Morcilla (Blood Sausage): Not my favorite, but that’s more of a personal preference. * Sweetbreads: Delicious, with great texture and flavor. * Fried Potatoes: They were crispy and well-prepared; however, they were underseasoned and needed more salt. The horseradish dressing served with them was excellent. Dessert - Chocolate Cake: The chocolate cake was a perfect ending to the meal. It was moist, rich, and thick, complemented beautifully by the mascarpone mousse. The mousse added a creamy, luxurious touch. Final Thoughts: This restaurant delivered some standout dishes, particularly the skirt steak and chocolate cake, which were the stars. While a few items didn’t meet our expectations, we’d definitely return for the skirt steak!
The staff are very friendly and very professional. The food was good, but it could be better. I was expecting a better steak; it had a lot of salt, and it was hard to enjoy. The chorizo and sausage have different flavors not the best. The other downside is very hard to get a reservation because it’s always booked. Eating in front of the fire is very uncomfortable because you don’t have space to eat.
Sad to say this place didn't live up to its reputation. The building is charming and the bar surrounding the grill looks like a fabulous place to sit. We had a diverse order of starters, entrees and sides. The starters were the best items we had with crab bruschetta, cheese empanada and baked ricotta all being enjoyable. Two mains were wayyyyy too salty and we are salt fiends. And the shrimp were overcooked. Maybe just go get a drink and an app and eat elsewhere. Service was also meh. Main server was very slow. I had to go hunt them down for the check before even being asked if we wanted dessert because we waited so long.
The service is phenomenal, but the food is lacking. My meat was cooked to perfection, but other than that, I enjoyed almost nothing else of my meal. For $200, you'd think I would leave happy but I whispered to my boyfriend that I'd rather be eating my $3 homemade pasta leftovers that was waiting for me at home. The clam chowder had a really strong alcohol flavor to it, like they used too much white wine or didn't cook it down enough? The cheese empanadas were tasty, but not worth the price point. Their sausages were incredibly dry and the side salad had no flavor to it, like they didn't dress or salt it. The potatoes were the best thing on the table, crisped to perfection and seasoned well, but it's potatoes. If I'm paying $200 for a meal, $1 potatoes shouldn't be the only thing that makes me happy. I will say though that they certainly gave the fine dining experience if nothing else -- the food came out at the perfect temperature and staggered exactly right.
