Came here multiple times over the years for the afternoon tea. Recently came for the matcha afternoon tea and it’s still as delicious and enjoyable as ever. The portions are small but beautiful. The matcha cookies were delicious and I was feeling quite full afterwards. Love their themed concepts and looking forward to trying more!

If you’re looking for a relaxed cozy place for a unique afternoon tea, Cha-An in the East Village is the perfect tea house for you. Cha-An features an exclusive limited time Hojicha Afternoon Tea Set which comes with a pot of tea, three savory bites, and eight delicious sweets. The savory bites are presented on a tiered rack while each dessert item looks like a work of art placed inside beautiful traditional Japanese boxes. Enjoy the flavors of handmade items while sipping on freshly brewed tea. That pot of tea always gets topped off with a smile for an amazing experience. Come try Ch-An’s afternoon tea set only available on the weekends. Space is limited so secure your spot right on their website now.

An absolutely delicious experience from start to finish. The Japanese cuisine is refined, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Each dish was perfectly balanced, using fresh, high-quality ingredients. The desserts were outstanding creative, delicate, and not overly sweet, the perfect way to end the meal. The service was attentive and the atmosphere warm and inviting. A must-visit spot in New York for Japanese food and desserts.

Small intimate tea shop with delicious foods. Had the afternoon tea where they have a different menu each month so what I had might not be the same as other people's experience. The food presentations were top notch and the servers were very friendly, quick and on top of things. There were two types of tea selection during my visit (houjicha and genmaicha), both very good. The food portions were a little small but with the whole course, you won't leave hungry. The only thing that may deter some people is...you have to make a reservation online and pay upfront for the afternoon tea ($68 + tax + tip - during my visit) to reserve your date and time (they only have afternoon tea on Saturday and Sunday) so the only thing that worried me was not being able to make it for my reservation. Unsure what the cancellation policy is and if they refund or give you credit for a future visit if you aren't able to make it in case of unforseen circumstances.

The most delicious desserts and mochi!!! Absolutely cuteness overload and fantastic drinks as well. Great place to buy a gift for someone who likes mochi and japanese things.

Listen, obviously this is a tea place. Tea is incredible, highly recommend the matcha tiramisu. But the water must have come from Mount Olympus itself. Never have I had something so smooth and delectable as the complimentary water served here. I can never go back to regular water after this. This place has ruined me in the best way possible

My son takes me to this Japanese Tea House at times when I visit him, especially when it is a special day like my birthday or Mother's Day. The first three photos (with the parfait) were during a Mother's Day weekend, with a Sakura theme. That is the Sakura Parfait of Cha An Teahouse. The rest of the photos were from the reserved upper room where they were serving a four course Strawberry Afternoon Tea. When you see the teahouse (there is a photo of the door), you have to walk up steps to get to the main area where you are seated and you can order tea with sweet or savory snacks (like mochi or dango or even a variation of anmitsu where instead of jelly they use mochi. It's called Mochi Mochi). They also have good alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (my son orders the alcoholic one while I order the non-alcoholic kind). For the upper floor, however, you can go there only with a reservation. I encourage anyone going to Cha An Teahouse to make a reservation at least once for the four course afternoon tea. It's a very special experience that even the lady serving us was so pleased at the way my eyes lit up every time a new course was served. My son loved seeing how pleased I was with the experience as well, so I encourage anyone visiting New York City to go to Cha An Teahouse and even just once, make a reservation for afternoon tea (Note: You have to make it early, since they tend to get fully booked).

We came here for their strawberry tea experience and lived the food and atmosphere. The tea set is in a separate room and the service is attentive. We like the variety of food and the presentation was very good. Getting to the tea area does involve going up 2 flights of stairs FYI for those who may have difficulty.

Enjoyed tea at the tea house on the third floor of Cha An -- space was bright and quiet with ample space between tables. Service was great! The water in the teapot was refreshed regularly and the courses were served at a good pace. We enjoyed three savory dishes followed by around nine sweeter bites. We were sufficiently full by the end! Well worth the money and a huge thanks to our servers who were so polite and kind.

This place was soo cozy and cute! I loved the matcha jasmine drink and my friend got the hibiscus tea. The hibiscus tea wasn't really sweet but it had good fruity flavor so make sure to ask for a side of syrup if you want it to be sweet! The matcha parfait was delicious, it's like the one at Nana's green tea but in my opinion Cha-An's agar was better than Nana's. The service was amazing the waiters were soo sweet!

We did afternoon tea here. It was pricey, but a fun experience. The tea options were only 3. You have to pull out the tea bags or it will over steep! But, I like that it was not loose leaf tea in the pot. The savory items were my favorite. After $84 I did still leave hungry, lol. Lots of small desserts- they were unique. I was glad I tried it.

Love the atmosphere and vibes. It’s perfect for an afternoon tea with friends. The match tiramisu was awesome, lots of match powder on top and it tasted like there was a layer of sake soaked into the cake on the bottom, and wasn’t too sweet. There were many options for tea pots which came with a free refill of hot water. I’m giving this a 4 star as the rose tea I got didn’t have much flavors of rose, and everything was slightly pricey.

It’s my second time at this place and I think the atmosphere about Cha An is really cute. It did remind me a lot of the dessert places in Japan. I thought the desserts were quite good and rather tasty. The only thing I would say is that the desserts are fairly pricey and that is the only thing that is preventing me from giving it a 5. It’s pricey but the amount you get is not all that much. The flavour was there though and I would say the matcha in the tiramisu was quite prominent.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout our visit. We ordered the Kiwami Matcha, a Matcha Latte, and two desserts: the Hojicha Anmitsu and the Homemade Mochi set. Both desserts were beautifully presented and had delicate, well-balanced flavors. The downsides: a long wait to be seated, and the prices here are on the higher end compared to many other tea and dessert spots we've visited. That said, I would still recommend it for a special treat.

If you like matcha, sesame, red beans, and mochi, this Japanese dessert restaurant can be your choice. Try it at least once even I think it’s a bit too pricey for the dessert! Although the space is small, but the atmosphere is interesting.

This place has really gone downhill and is completely different from what it used to be. No more traditional japanese tea house experience. They were full so they made everyone wait on the staircase which seems like a safety hazard. Desserts are generic, uninspired, and way too sweet. Also very overpriced for the quality. Found the waitress to be quite rude and greedy about tips.

Very bad experience. Tables are about two cm apart and the waiters are RUSHING you out the door. Basically trying to milk everyone of their cash and then push them out, and conveniently make small talk only when they ask for the tip! It's also very hot inside, likely because of all the customers sitting so close together. And the match was very terrible -- so sweetened, it did not even taste like matcha.

Cha-An did change a lot since our previous visit, sadly. The dishes were drastically overpriced, as tiramisu shrunk to 1/3 of the original size (last photo was the tiramisu cake from our last time visit). Tea and drinks were unsatisfied, tasting no difference than alkane water. Will for sure not come back again.

Tbh overpriced matcha desserts… and in case u didn’t know, the TIP IS A MUST HERE. I went to this place last Sunday w my friends, since we know wut we’re getting, we ordered straight ahead, just these 2 deserts. And when we finished like within 30min (including the time they took to serve) and got the check and paid, the waitress (who didn’t serve us at all, the other one at least gave us water) said sth like “did our service upset u? Cuz I didn’t see u tip or do u wanna pay the tip in cash?” I’m like 😅 I did ended up tipping them 18%, and the said they’re going to refund the first charges within 3 business days, lol today’s the third business day

We came to Cha-An with high expectations, especially after hearing so much about their matcha desserts. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to the hype in any way. We were especially looking forward to the matcha ice cream, but it was a major disappointment, it lacked the authentic, earthy bitterness and depth that true matcha lovers look for. Instead, it tasted flat and overly sweet, more like a generic green tea flavor you’d find in a supermarket. I’ve had much better matcha desserts at other places in the city that don’t rely on reputation alone. The customer service was also well below standard. From the moment we were seated, we felt rushed. There was no warmth or attention to detail, which is surprising for a place that positions itself as a refined Japanese tea house. What really left a bad impression was the payment situation, we politely asked to split the bill, but the staff flatly refused and insisted on a single check without offering any flexibility. It felt unnecessarily strict and dismissive, especially for a casual group visit. The atmosphere, while quiet, didn’t make up for the poor service and underwhelming food. Overall, it felt like the focus was more on turning over tables than actually providing a good experience. For the price and reputation, I expected much better. Sadly, I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone seeking authentic matcha or respectful service.
