Calafia Alameda Reviews
Calafia Taqueria is officially in my regular rotation. Stopped in today for their Taco Tuesday special and grabbed one chicken and two pork. Super flavorful, well cooked, no notes. They also offered complimentary chips and salsa, which made me feel so at home. Lovely staff, relaxed atmosphere, soccer on in the background. Easy 10/10. Can’t wait to come back.
Wonderful experience! Came in for a quick bite on a Friday. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. The ambiance is lovely, I felt like I found a little home away from home with their decor, music, and kindness. Soft tacos al pastor hit the spot and the house made Jamaica is DELICIOUS! Will definitely be going back and telling all my friends about Calafia Taqueria ☺️
I was lucky to stroll past hungry on a Tuesday during happy hour. Two soft tacos, roasted chicken and fish, both hit the spot. Five salsa varieties were great and chips were fresh. With a Modelo for a great price. Perfect light dinner!
Love, love, love this restaurant! The food is always amazing, and the customer service is excellent. I dine here personally and also have food catered for my team. They are incredibly family-oriented and truly make an effort to remember their customers.
I have been patronizing Calafia Taqueria for over 20 years. I usually order their fish tacos. However, I had eaten their beef and chicken enchiladas, tamales, burritos. Their food is delicious. I am hooked on their Jamaica agua fresca. They have a salsa bar with an assortment of salsa, lime, radishes, etc. Great restaurant to enjoy Mexican food.
The carne asada is fire here. I judge Mexican restaurants on their rice and especially refried beans and these guys didn't disappoint. I had a Michealada either lunch and it was on point. My team was happy with their food as well. Bien hecho
Definitely try the carnitas, you will not be disappointed! The best burritos in Alameda & the red salsa is incredible.
My favorite Taqueria in Alameda You know it’s good when you see all the local construction workers here s lunch. Good salsa music going. Best salsa bar ever. Excellent fish tacos Very reasonably priced. These folks care about their food. Real people cooking real food at peoples prices Check it out. You won’t be sorry
It was a dark and stormy night. I was starved. Like a beacon of hope shining through a bleak facade appeared Taqueria Calafia. This is the greatest Mexican restaurant that has ever materialized in our existence, and will stand as such until the end of time. Sublime burrito, tacos, salads, and free drinks for students. What more could you want?
Went here with a friend. Great experience food was absolutely delicious, hot, fresh and flavorful. The staff is incredibly attentive and kind. I love the aesthetic it captures the authentic Mexican culture beautifully. Pricing is decent and for students out there they offer a discounted student menu! If you’re in the mood for a true Mexican dining experience I would 100% recommend this joint. It’s THE BEST Mexican joint in Alameda according to Reddit…but also according to me!
Wonderful local Taqueria that also caters to nearby breweries. we came here to test the food as it was made from the source and we were very impressed. They have a wide selection of burritos, tacos, and other Mexican dishes. They have a ton of seating, both indoor and outdoor and the service is ultra friendly. When you walk in, you were greeted with an unassuming counter to order your food and then sit down. The menu is rather simple, but everything we tried here was great. One dollar chips and salsa was good too. They offer beer, and the seating situation here is amazing. The backyard patio was a HUGE surprise and there’s even a terrace back yard with even more space. This place is Well accommodated for events.
I just moved to Alameda and was surprise that Califas Taqueria lives to the name one of the best Taqueria I had a super burrito with extra meat. My drink was a large tamarindo I have to say it was good. The place is very Mexican decor. The cashier very fast. Service was great and the smells of the food being cooked can smell it outside most mission taqueria's smells don't make it outside. The picture of the burrito in the bag is big and weighs what a burrito should be like.
I finally gave Calafia a second try, after having them give or six years ago and being totally underwhelmed. Unfortunately they are still operating at the same caliber and I won't be returning again. I typically leave the island to get Mexican cuisine as I want OG seasoned food, not tamed down for American tastes. I went in close to 8pm on a Saturday to grab a carne asada super burrito, only to be told they were out of that meat. Really? One of the most popular proteins, and you're out of it, on a Saturday night? Wow, ok. I switch gears and go for lengua, thinking it'll be a tasty second choice. There was one dude eating indoors and the kitchen was quiet- bad indications of slow business. I didn't see anything behind done after I put in my order and paid, and it was perplexing. After perusing their salsa bar and deciding on what to try, about 8 minutes later a woman comes out of the kitchen with my tortilla and fills it with meat, beans, cheese, guacamole and sour cream, all items from the steam table to the left of the cash register. What took so long? What was happening for almost 10 min in the back of that quiet kitchen, when all the ingredients to fill my burrito were up front? Does it take that long to steam a flour tortilla up to make it pliable? When I got home I looked at the measly packet of tortilla chips they gave me. I laid them out on my plate- 11 broken chips. Not even one chip per bite of burrito! The only thing they were generous with, was the salsa bar. I'll get to the salsa in a sec. The burrito was so plain and flavorless, the lengua was waterlogged and did not have ANY hint of seasonings or spices. I've made poached chicken with more flavor- so sad. I paid over $15 for a burrito that was so disappointing. The salsas were the only redeeming thing, but even that came to haunt me. I tried the light, medium, and green salsas and they were all at tolerable heat levels (I knew better than to touch the dark one!) but the next day when I went to get the other half out of the fridge, the darker red salad container was bulging and full of gas like it was fermenting. I'm not usually afraid of fermentation, it's not MOLD. But this gave me a little hesitation. I decided to go ahead and eat it anyway, as the burrito was so plain- I ended up adding some TJs sweet & hot jalapeños to give it some dimension. Unfortunately, the next few days my gut has been rocked by their food and I'm never returning again. Not sure if it was the lengua that had probably been sitting there at the steam table for FAR too long, or the fermenting salsa, but the fact that my stomach has been messed up for two days is enough to say I'm driving an extra 1.5 miles to get food in East Oakland that has never given me stomach trouble.
I was so disappointed, we went around 4ish and they ran out of steak 😫 which is what I wanted on my burrito. Then I seen tamales they ran out of that too, like damn what do yal got lol. So I got the pork enchiladas plate with rice and beans and the rice was crunchy and the enchiladas was very bland. Don't think I'm going back.
Do not order online for pick-up through their website/ "preferred method"!! Website confirmed the order, and I got a confirmation email and text. At the register, the cashier told me, "oh, those orders don't come through, our system doesn't work." Not like, just today, but as the state of their world. Food is good :)
We’ve been looking to find the best burrito in Alameda and our search continues. We ordered two super burritos for take out and we’re very disappointed with the result. It took about forty minutes from ordering to actually getting our burritos. We brought the burritos home to find that none of the “super” ingredients were in our burritos. No guacamole, very little sour cream, etc. This restaurant is slow, overpriced (they charge extra for 50% of their meat options) and they couldn’t any orders right.
