Matryoshka Albee Square Reviews
Haven't had authentic Russian food like this one for a long time, especially in Manhattan. This unique restaurant is connected to the spa, and it is easy to miss the entrance. The mushroom soup is so delicious! The Moscow Pelmeni are also testy, the cabbage rolls are average, I will try different filling next time. The price is affordable and the portion is very generous👍 Many movie and sports stars have visited it. It has many steps down/up and turns and with herbal smells from the spa, but worth it. I will definitely go back.
Such a gem in the middle of the city. We were visiting with a baby and noticed they had a restaurant (also a spa). They went out of their way to help us find a location to change a diaper and then introduced us to some excellent food the we literally cannot find in Texas. If you are curious about Russian cuisine this is your spot. It was excellent and the service was above and beyond. Highly recommend

This spot has become my reliable favorite. Food here strikes the perfect balance, with excellent mouthfeel and inventive preparation. The people working here are quick and careful. The restaurant rarely looks empty. My time there was satisfying.
It was best Slavic food in NYC!!! Big portions, nice atmosphere, excellent service! Thank you !!!!
Food was good but service was really wonky, everything came out of order and at random times. Long wait.
Wow. What some great good. Little place tucked away in a Turkish bath house but worth going. Very friendly staff and gave great recomondations. The food was so tasty. I've never been to Russia but I'm assuming if I had a Russian grandmother this is how they would cook the food. So good.
This was a perfect lunch of Russian cuisine, about which I was woefully uninformed & inexperienced until now. Black tea w/ honey, Oliver salad, salmon soup, traditional chicken patties w/ buckwheat, & black bread. The chicken cutlets were delightfully tart, such that they paired nicely w/ a touch of ketchup. Plenty to take home afterward.
Having never tried Russian cuisine before, I'll say this... it's delicious! There were 5 of us, each ordered something different and every dish was just as good as the next. Will definitely go back to try more items. They also have a spa, may have to give it a try too. Definitely recommend!
The entire experience was satisfying. The service team provides remarkably detailed attention to each table. Their food leaves me wanting another visit. They've achieved both class and comfort in their design. The meal was perfect. I want to return for their complete menu.
This place handles all aspects of dining well. Their dishes surpassed my highest hopes. Every employee shows authentic friendliness. The selection features diverse meal options. This spot matches my taste perfectly.
The menu shows thought and care in its creation. Service is reliable mostly, with occasional missteps. Their kitchen produces amazing dishes. This place sets the bar high!!! Matryoshka serves food worth remembering.

I regularly order take out from Matryoshka. I’ve never dined-in and I’ve never used the bath house, although I’ve heard great things. Matryoshka offers amazingly reliable Eastern European comfort food. My favorite are the blintzes with caviar. They serve you a generous portion of salmon caviar and blintzes with a soft texture and well-balanced flavor - just a touch of sweetness. Sour cream and caviar folded within their warm blintze is perfection to have at home. It is what I eat when I’m sad and when I’m celebrating. The pickled vegetable plate is a crowd pleaser. It comes with more than one type of pickled cucumber, green tomato, cabbage, mushroom, and carrots. It is a generous portion and I eat it throughout the week. The Vareniki is exactly as it should be. As a vegetarian-forward household, we get a serving of the potato and one of cherry for dessert. These are steamed dumplings with a clean and very simple flavor. They hold their shape and stay together even after traveling. They come with the traditional apple sauce and sour cream. If you have spicy mustard at home, enjoy! Top the potato ones with a little salt to your liking. Both of these are also great the next day. Their Borscht is also good and keeps well. Note: this is a non-meat/vegetarian review, they have many meat options I have not tried.
I loved this place. It was exactly what I wanted for this particular experience. Disclaimer: I expected and desired a hole in the wall. The interior and exterior would have you guessing that the food would not be any good. This is unfortunate, as the service and food beats that of more modern looking restaurants. This is the place for Russian food done right. I recommend the lunch specials, for thrift and for variety.
Took my mother here so she could try Russian cuisine for the first time. Everything was delicious. Portions were fair, and the decore really tied it all together.

This place is tucked away underground inside a sauna, so it's like having lunch in a speakeasy, but the borscht was really good! The meatballs and salad were also good and sizeable in portion, competitively priced at $13. The service was stereotypically Russian.
Matroska is located inside a Russian / Ukrainian bathhouse in the financial district. It is a little hard to find, but worth the required concentration and Google Maps assistance. Go in, wind your way around through doorways and up and down staircases to reach the dining room. Um, ask the receptionist for directions. The Eastern European food is s excellent. Dumplings and soup are recommended. Though, maybe avoid the salads. Prices are a little high, but lower (along with smaller portions) at lunch. Service is fast, knowledgeable and friendly. The dining arra is in a bathhouse, so atmosphere is what you expect. But it is quiet. Bring a colleague, enjoy the food, and have a good conversation while savoring your meal.
The food is a tasty version of home made Russian food. I wouldn’t really go here as the restaurant because is more like a bath house place. But once you’re in the bath house if you’re curious about Russian/Ukrainian food this place is worth the try. Also love the spa!

Mediocre food imo. The best was the borscht, which was flavorful and generous portion. However, the rest of our meal was lacking in taste and value... All of our meat dishes were overdone and tough especially the kebabs. The golubtsy was kinda bland and small. The blintzes were alright. Overall I've had better Russian / Eastern European cuisine in Brooklyn esp the Brighton Beach area.

I had a very unpleasant experience at their restaurant. The waitress and other staff were rude, never smiled, and didn’t even make eye contact. The atmosphere was dark and unwelcoming, with an odd smell that made it uncomfortable to stay!
Very bad, and unsanitary place. Food is horrible, old and not fresh. Not sure how people can even take a bath there and call it a spa. Pool was something other then blue. Staff is rude and not pleasant. If anything, but stay away from this palace
