Casa de Luz Austin Reviews
Great place. So zen. The food was fantastic!! Saw a great concert. Met great folks. I will be back.
I couldn’t recommend this place more. There is tons of bamboo growing and it feels like you are in another country. In the evening little Christmas lights are glowing it’s so pretty. Casa de luz has a set menu meal of the day and it’s vegan and Ayurvedic and really lovely if you enjoy healthy food. I adore bringing any friends who visit here :) Nearby in the same “village” complex there is the third eye mediation lounge which is so lovely too and has workshops
Amazing food, prices and surroundings! Above all expectations. I especially enjoyed sugar-free desserts and hibiscus tea. We’ll come back to try breakfast.
Genuinely the cutest yummiest places I’ve ever been to!
My favorite restaurant in Austin. Fresh, delicious food, very chill calm atmosphere, seating inside and outside. The employees are nice, the desserts are perfect, and the price is right. This restaurant is set in a small community of holistic health services and events. The atmosphere outside is magical, gorgeous. Do try!
The food here is completely vegan. Some would consider it little raw but I loved it. It may not be completely filling but it is very fresh and colorful. The desserts are also of big variety and again made of healthy ingredients. They also have a market here of different merchandise items and clothing. There's also Cafe inside. Apart from the food and the coffee the ambience is just fantastic. Very very green, the buildings are painted inside, the vibe is brilliant, there is a play area for kids & a lot of therapy rooms too I love the vibe and I will be coming again soonI love the vibe and I will be coming again soon
How did I never know about this! 🤩such an epic experience that I look forward to returning to. They were even patient with my interruptions with questions 🥰 while they were checking out others. So cool. I felt so good after eating here and learned a lot.
I absolutely love everything about this place! It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a community. From the moment you walk in, you’re transported in a serene and loving atmosphere. The vibes here are incredible—so peaceful, homey, safe and warm feeling. The food is absolutely delicious, nutritious and healthy. It’s 100% vegan and makes your body feel good! Everything is made with love, as if it was your grandma’s cherished recipes that she cooked for you. I desperately wish there was one in the DFW area because I would go all the time, just like I did when I lived in Austin. I also have always wished for casa de luz meal prep- now that would be amazing to eat this healthy food daily. Anyways, now, I’m many hours away, and all I can do is reminisce. I wish I had some Casa de Luz food tonight! 😫 If you can’t tell, it’s a 5-star experience! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Locally sourced, organic, superbly and creatively prepared vegan food in a beautifully landscaped and peaceful setting. A relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. A set menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lunch and dinner are self-serve except for the entrée, which is brought out to you. The set includes soup, salad, the main dish and a choice of teas and coffee. Everything is delicious, and your dog is welcome to hang out with you on the gorgeous patio. I’ve been a vegetarian most of my life (because... cheese!) but after the delicious dinner we had, I can finally see going vegan all the way. I couldn’t name all the spices in our to-die-for squash lasagna and the sauces on the side dishes, but I know I want to taste them again... Absolutely delicious. On a side note, this was my carnivorous husband’s first foray into a vegan experience, and he loved it as much as I did. Afterwards we got to relax in the romantically lit, serene garden spaces to complete a beautiful evening of excellent food both for the body and for the soul.
I was introduced to this place by a friendly neighbor who took me to this interesting place... The ppl were friendly, pet friendly, children friendly.. my daughter n my friends daughter had a good time playing at the playground.. food was really good.. definitely going back before I head back to Houston... It was just so relaxing great vibes...
It’s just the best. Makes your heart feel all good. An Austin institution. So grateful to have it back in my life.
Hello from Eugene, Oregon. It's nice to see that there are still spots like this in Austin. Lunch was fantastic - main, desserts, and the environment. I'll be back while I'm in town. Onward, thru the fog!
Conscious cooking at its best!! You can taste love in every bite! I'm not vegan but that does not matter here. Organic consciously managed ingredients prepared with love just taste like your in another dimension of delicious! Perfectly nutritionally balanced meals are served from the heart in an enchanting environment. Joy is abundant as kids play on the playground and I am lounging in a hammock. DO NOT MISS THIS EXPERIENCE!
Always 10 out of 10 since I first came here yonks ago! Mellow, righteous yet humble vibes, gorgeous vegan food with nothing to make your tummy ache. I love every thing about this place, from the gently lit, bamboo and hammock lined walk-up to the dessert case. Every living soul should eat here. I am thrilled to have lived in the time of Casa. Your get unlimited soup, salad, twig tea and an amazing plate of macrobiotic, gluten, soy and sugar free delicacies, which differ every day!!! How fun is that? If you don't like an item, say beans, just ask the sweetest staff there for a plate without them. Nom nom nooooooom!
Absolutely beautiful. Disregard the negative reviews. If you want healthy, organic food - eat here. Also my family is interracial, and we experienced nothing like some of these reviews say. We are almost all of our food, even the kids. Kids food for under 3 - free. Seemed like a nice community, and there was a park for the kids. Stunning. Too bad we'd never choose to live in Austin, but if so I'd live right here. :)
Our family loves to come here when we come out to Austin. The restaurant is tucked away in a beautiful environment of trees, hammocks, picnic tables and play ground. There is parking across the street if you need it. What you need to know is that there's a set menu here. You pay a fixed amount for drink, salad, soup and a lunch/dinner plate. For children, you pay less, and they figure out the price depending on their age. You can also ask them to just pay for soup and salad. They also have a variety of amazing desserts to choose from at the price of $4 in addition to your set meal. You could also just come for dessert if you're not hungry and want a fun little spot to relax for a bit. My whole family loves eating here because the flavors are so good and your body feels so happy afterwards. We also like that you can eat indoors or outdoors. The restaurant also sells some nice kitchen supplies, cooking ingredients and cookbooks.
The food was delicious! Such a find that I came a second time in my short 5 day visit. I appreciate good vegan food when traveling. The price was reasonable for what you get. A variety of wholesome foods on one plate. The time and expense to cook such a variety at home on a daily basis can be challenging. I highly recommend Casa de Luz!!
This space is truly a dream. The bamboo trail leading in stifles city noises and sets you into a relaxed state of mind. The food is phenomenal every time, and free of oils and extras that can leave you feeling heavy or greasy or sad. I’ll often go just for soup and dessert as the full plates are large. 3rd eye lounge has amazing chocolates. The massage therapist is great, too. And now there’s coffee!
This is my new favorite place in Austin. Playground for The kids, amazing healthy food (we had the breakfast and lunch) the people are so nice here, it's beautiful with a variety of trees, blooming vines and a variety of amenities from yoga to A kava lounge to dining hall and alchemy booth. It feels like you transported to a different country when you show up here
Love this place, the people, and the food! Such a wholesome and satisfying meal. I was referred here by a friend from around here and I got the lunch plate on a Tues around noon. Yum! And this is coming from me: I love eating meat. Veggies n grains n seeds n beans n all the starches of the world too, but not just vegan or vegetarian. And I’m a devout atheist, allergic to religion & new-agey stuff (long story) - a cult vibe often comes along with “vegan” places. Not the case here. This place is just great, period. Family and community make it what it is. Clear mission of making healthy food available and understandable. Food delicious. Folks friendly. Ambiance so chill. Love Casa de Luz. I can’t wait to come back; it’ll be the first thing I do when visiting Austin again! p.s. - don’t hold back, try the Kanten too ☺️
Casa de Luz is always such an amazing experience! You walk into a peaceful courtyard, with seating for groups or just a hammock for yourself. The food is simple and delicious, and you know with every bit you are nourishing your body. The teas are refreshing and the hot tea is always satisfying. The salad and soup are a great way to start before you receive your main plate. The colors of the different dishes jump off the plate! Eating here always reminds me to add new vegetables to my everyday meals. I went yesterday and can't wait to go back very soon!
One of our favorite restaurants in Austin. Never disappoints. Everything is flavourful. Flavors are complementary and one can taste the flavor of most of their ingredients, especially the veggies. Their salad dressings are yummy. Even their desserts are delicious and we have tried most of their desserts over time. Literally recommended by my PCP. So much variety in a single meal. If resources weren't restricted, I'd like to have such a meal daily. I wish they open a branch in North Austin. Pros: Variety of flavors in a single meal, Healthy food, Peaceful ambience
One of the best vegan/healthy restaurants in Austin. The food here is and truly FEELS like some of the most natural food I’ve ever eaten. Cafeteria-style eating so you pay a flat rate and get unlimited soup, salad, tea and 1 entree. They rotate all of the above every day and have specials like Indian food every first Friday of the month and sushi every first Monday.
Amazing Vegetarian Food - If you have never been - "ask how it flows" There are many regulars that go faithfully everyday and they are harmless. You pay first - fixed price $12 - I think (dessert is another $4.00 - worth trying once) Get your salad and soup, tea or water, and utensils/napkin. Ready now to sit where ever is available now. Once your done (I was told no seconds on starters) The go back to the soup salad area and ask the server for your main meal/plate. I have been there and the server will brought over the main plate (not exactly sure how that worked) It was Latino Enchiladas Wednesday (Taco too sometimes). Breakfast is good also. These pictures are lunch.
I love this place! It is quite literally my second home. I love the wholesome food, the relaxing atmosphere, and the friendly staff! There is something quite special about this place. Whatever it is, it nourishes both your body and soul! Thank you, Casa De Luz! You are AmAzinG!
I left the Barton Springs Pool in search of the closest vegetarian restaurant — but I never expected the experience I had. Being completely wowed and taken by the atmosphere and food only begins to explain what I experienced. I have been a frequent traveling vegan/vegetarian for years and I have never been to such a place like Casa de Luz. It’s healing, warm, welcoming to all, nourishing. There needs to be thousands Cass de Luz around the entire world in every city. Simply — if you like to eat food that is good for you and tastes like a home-cooked meal by friendly kind people, and you enjoy soft calm lighting in a beautiful community setting to enjoy that meal— this is your new favorite spot. Regardless of who you are or what you normally eat, I know everyone would takeaway a great experience from having a meal here.
It was our first time in Austin and we’re glad we found this very inviting plant based restaurant. The food was perfectly what we were looking for, purely plant based. Nothing processed added and it was a pleasant experience we had with my family. However, it would be great if there were kid-friendly choices. We consider coming back here again.
A nonpareil vegan rhapsody. The Austin standard for salubrious cuisine, a place whose ethos holds up the very roof – this creed is painted above the entrance to remind you as you leave, why you must return soon. It is good to know the rhythm of the set menu: First Monday of the month, vegan sushi is for dinner. First Friday of the month, the dinner is Indian themed. Tues dinner every week is gorditas. Wed lunch/Thu dinner/Sun lunch are tacos.
Gentle ambiance, friendly staff, mood lighting, tasty and healthy food all made our first anniversary dinner super special and memorable. Felt like stepping into softer, cozier world. A man played Spanish guitar in the courtyard, people laughed and cheered from a nearby game room, the giant chimes bubbled with breezy harmony. 10/10 would visit again on our next trip to Austin!
If you’re like me and grew up on a predominantly veggie diet, a weekend of eating bbq in Austin may have you craving your veggies! So, I tricked the hubs into checking out Casa de Luz with me. It was a dream. Absolutely lovely staff and delicious vegan fare. They even had one of my faves, hibiscus tea. Austin has such a fabulous selection of Vegan restaurants, even if veggies aren’t your favorite – this is the place to give them a try!
The environment is stellar. The location seems to serve as some form of retreat area, with a very simple and high quality cafe in the back. The food was of very high quality, simply prepared, and with an excellent flavor. Definitely check out if you are #Vegan #Nature Enthusiast #Meditation Enthusiast #Yoga Enthusiast #Serenity Enthusiast
Microbiotic food with in a zen atmosphere. We walked through the beautiful bamboo trail to the restaurant. We were greeted and paid for our meals. The dessert cabinet looked delicious but we were so stuffed we could not eat another bite after our meal. The artisan greens were topped with lemon and nut dressing. It tasted very clean and flavorful. The steamed veggies were crisp and the peanut sauce was very good. The lentil dish had a nice flavor. There was a round scoop of brown rice with a mushroom gravy on top. It was simple but filling. The soup was a sweet acorn squash and potato soup which I loved. There were pickled beets and another veggie dish with another sauce. The presentation on the food was great. The teas were delicious as well. There was a spa type music playing while we ate.
Casa de Luz (the restaurant) and the little compound it’s in (the Village) has been one of my favorite places in Austin since I moved here 17 years ago. The Village is a sprawling complex that feels a little like walking on the beach road in Tulum. Lots of little nooks with hammocks, lounges, twinkling lights, and often incense wafting from one of the many healing spaces hidden inside. I am not a vegan, yet I find Casa de Luz’s pre-fixe vegan/macrobiotic menu predictably delicious, satisfying, and plenty to fill me up. I love going there when I need some clean food in my belly and a soothing atmosphere. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and outdoors is also a little oasis for children and pups. When my kid was little we came here often to get a nourishing meal while he climbed on the play structure. I noticed during my most recent visit that the bathrooms have been upgraded, and there seem to be several new spaces in the compound selling pressed juices, elixirs, and natural remedies. And there are all sorts of activities, like sound baths, qigong, and meditation going on regularly. It really is a little village where you can satisfy a lot of rejuvenation needs in one place. The only slight inconvenience of CDL is that parking can be hard to come by. There’s a lot of it, but it’s shared with city-run baseball fields, and is also overflowing parking Zach Scott Theater down the street.
Went here on a trip to Austin, so sad there isn't one in Dallas!! My husband has Crohns disease and therefore, eats WFPB, no oils. No refined sugars. We never thought we would find a restaurant that has this type of food!! It was beyond delicious!! Food was fresh and it felt great on our stomachs and we even had like 2-3 desserts each time 😅 this place is a gem, and we will be returning for our anniversary!
Oh how I love this place… this is an absolute gem in Austin. The food is absolutely delicious, fresh, and free of harmful oils — but this place is so much more than a restaurant. You can get food and then lie in a hammock, take a nice stroll around the lush property, sit in the garden and journal, or attend one of their fantastic classes or meetups. I’ve done family constellations (spiritual healing), breathwork classes, a Jeffersonian dinner (joined by the owner of Casa de Luz!), and yoga at different rooms in this place. My experiences here are magical and transformative. ✨
This is the first whole food plant based restaurant I've been to and I absolutely loved it! Their food is organic, vegan (no meal, no dairy, no eggs) and whole food plant based (less processed foods, no oil, no sugar, minimal salt) and it's extremely nutritious. It's a cafeteria style food system where everyone pays the same price (14+tax, no tip), and you pick your food up in the kitchen, eat and put the dishes back. The day I went there I got a clear veggie soup, 2 salads, sautéed veggies and a side of beans. They also have an organic tea, 2 teas - but I didn't like them. However, my brother absolutely loved the hibiscus tea. This was the first restaurant where I ate and didn't feel weird after eating it lol. Ideally what I'd want to eat for every meal for the rest of my life! I'll definitely be returning to this place several times.
I love Casa de Luz! The loving community warms my heart every time I arrive, which is about five times a week, for the healthiest and tastiest breakfast in Austin. The cooks and hosts are always laughing and they greet us as family. Shared tables if you like. Sit with friends and strangers or by yourself to pontificate. Inside or outside. Kids, families, and a dog here and there. I’ve made lifelong friends here. Pay as you enter with a credit card, or fund your own gift card account at the front counter, which I do, and just tell the host your name as you smile and walk in without breaking stride except to say good morning! Bus your own table as you depart and say your farewell until tomorrow. Frictionless. Long live the Casa de Luz community!
I love this place and wish there were more centers like this that offer healthy meals in a peaceful environment! My type of place 100%. The menu is the same for everyone - you only get to chose your dessert / tea, the rest is fixed. Love that it minimizes waste. Thank you! I’ll be back several times during my stay in Austin. If they offered a meal plan I would be eating there every day 🤩
Hippie heaven - this vegan and organic coop cafe is like stepping into a more caring and chill environment. Come for the healthy food. Stay for the amazing energy and community. There are many other little businesses and a great playground. A place where y’all really means all. It is actually a food coop! You can work for your meal if you do not have the money.
This is my new favorite restaurant. Casa de Luz has my heart and my soul because the restaurant makes you feel so free. Walking in, the scene is very calm and peaceful. Lunch was $12 even. You pay first and then get your own appetizers. The staff bring you your lunch, so don't worry they will bring you something. It does take awhile but it is so worth the wait. The food is hella fresh and organic. I met the owner's son and their whole mantra is just fascinating. Casa de Luz advocates for changing people's knowledge on clean eating and fueling your body with the right ingredients. You have to change your taste buds so they are used to the unprocessed food. There is no junk here. Beautiful place.
Just checked out Casa de Luz Village and it’s a total zen zone. The moment you step in, you’re hit with this serene, chill vibe that instantly relaxes you. But let’s talk about the food - it’s simple, yet so tasty. Eating here feels like you’re part of a community, with everyone there for a bit of comfort and healing. Casa de Luz Village isn’t just a place to eat; it’s where you go to feed your soul. Absolutely impressed with this spot – it’s a must for anyone looking for tranquility and delicious food in one place.
Went for the first time today and we will be back!! My husband and I aren’t new to healthy eating and we often frequent vegan/vegetarian restaurants. We could easily give up meat and often try to eat mostly vegetables when we can. (Although I love cheese!) But at this place, you don’t miss it! I could eat the salad every single day- wish I had the recipe! After the soup and salad I was starting to get full. But I saved room for the entree and it was delicious. The sauce on the kale was amazing! And the rice was perfectly cooked. It was a gorgeous day so we sat outside. Our toddler loved the playground area and he even ate most of his salad! He also loved the rice! Everyone was nice and I assume that the most of the patrons were regulars. You can tell that they appreciate and respect the food, people and ambiance. We will be back! Probably weekly!
By far it has become one of my favorite places!!! Gorgeous mature trees, beautiful patio, delicious homemade plant based meals and tasty deserts!!!! Wind chimes every where provide that zen and peaceful vibe. Super attentive service, brought water to our pups without us asking!!! One true gem in Austin! Thank you so much!!!!
Could well be the best vegan food I have had anywhere, ever! Got an ample serving for the $16 charge for lunch. It was a nice, healthy assortment of beans, rice, cooked vegetables, soup and salad. Everything was delicious. Colorful and nourishing. I only wish that I had discovered it sooner, since I'm only in Austin a couple days more. I cannot recommend this place highly enough! 🙂
This is my favorite place to visit when I come to Austin! And I’m not even vegan. But the love that goes into their food. And this space is soooo zen. Heavenly! You must go!
I’ve been coming here the last 2/3 years. It’s such a unique experience. I literally feel like I’m in South America when I’m here. Casa taught me that you can eat vegan food AND it taste great. What a cool place! Can’t recommend it enough :)
This little community space is pretty special. The restaurant itself offers soup, salad and a main dish. It's plant based and quite delicious. It's a very chill vibe and there's seating inside and outside. If you'd like coffee, there's a shop nearby and you can order it there and bring it to enjoy with your lunch (they're ok with this, I asked).
The vibe is immaculate here, which makes food only part of the focus, because the space here is designed to attract those that are looking for a level of inner peace, and I was absolutely down for it. The food was simple, healthy, and delicious, and I had a great time consuming everything from vegetables to legumes to tea. One meal portion was $16 per person and I was served a plate of food that contained sauteed vegetables, salad, lentils, and steamed vegetables with sauces. Everything was delicious. Since I normally loved cooking vegan at home, some of what they served here, especially lentils, matched exactly what I would have cooked. The soup and tea were amazing as well, and there was a piece of paper on the table with explanations about the tea. Even on a Monday in December, this place had everything that I needed. There was a hammock outside, a path to walk on, and a bulletin board with flyers advertising all types of local events that were along the lines of healing and inner peace. That further solidified my perceptions about how this place would attract people whose energies aligned with what this place was trying to surround itself with.
Absolutely unbelievable! Healthy, delicious food made with love and passion. This is a truly authentic organic vegan restaurant — not some fancy, bougie Hollywood spot. Expect real food and a real atmosphere. The vibe here is part of the experience, so make sure you respect and enjoy it. The staff is super friendly, and it’s a great place for kids as well. There’s no menu — you simply get what they’ve freshly prepared for the day, and trust me, you’ll be pleasantly surprised every time. A must-try for anyone who cares about clean eating, great energy, and genuine hospitality. Highly recommended! 🌱✨
My parents and I visited this place, expecting vegan food, but not too much else. Upon arriving, we were beyond blown away. The place is inundated with nature - trees, flowers, plants, waterfalls, rocks... Everything is peaceful and quiet. The food was nourishing and delectable. The place itself is well-managed and decorated beautifully. It is as if everything that I could possibly imagine about feeling connected to people and nature, and about my well-being put first, are all packed into this one place. I can hardly believe it. This place assures me that no matter what situations life brings me, there is hope. There is knowing that anything that goes on in the outside world, or any hardships people face, can be solved, or at least be seen from a better perspective (if that makes sense). I would love to know more about meditation, kundalini, and so on, since these have interested me for a long time. Unfortunately, I have a lot to think about in my life as is. Nevertheless, this would be the place to explore those subjects. At Casa de Luz Village, you not only eat guilt-free, healthy and nourishing food at a reasonable price, but you also get to embrace how beautiful human communities and nature can be when put together. It makes me wonder why suffering and injustice exist in this world in the first place. We need more spaces like this, not ones that incite negativity or competition. Highly recommend this place to anyone.
Casa de luz and her staff are full of heart and devotion from my experience in this community. I witness the beauty and kinship that has been fostered here from this village for decades. With macrobiotic food, mindful and tropical atmosphere, community gatherings and events, the innovative and kind spirits I keep meeting in this beautiful place. Casa De Luz is so multi faceted and with Barton Springs I would say is the Heart of Austin Texas. Over my last 5 mo ths here, far from perc Felt yet so so enriching; Casa De Luz is the sanctuary where I have been blessed to study, learn, serve, and teach. This village is also ran by the kind devoted hearts of her family staff as well as deeply supported by it's patrons and benefactors. If you would like to experience a place to meet new wonderful people, challenge yourself in deep meditation and compassionate offerings designed to help us heal and grow, as well as explore the enduring example of what is possible for our future, please come visit or donate. And don't take my word for it, please see and experience for yourself. Namaste 💚
I ate here a couple times when I lived here years ago, so I was pleasantly surprised when they were open and serving the same wholesome meals when I was in Austin for a weekend. So delicious and nourishing. You pay for your meal and then choose a tea and they serve you a tray with a homemade soup of the day and an enormous plate of food. The seating is family style and there is loads of outdoor seating and a large outdoor playground for children to play on. There were also hammocks and beautiful little paths to walk down. Great experience.
🌿 Casa de Luz Village – Austin, TX If you’re looking for peace on a plate and vibes for the soul — this is it. Casa de Luz Village is more than a restaurant. It’s a sanctuary. An experience. A sacred space rooted in holistic nourishment and intentional community. ✨ 100% vegan, gluten-free, organic, and sugar-free — all prepared fresh daily. There’s no menu. Instead, the meals shift with the seasons, ingredients, and inspiration of the chef. You walk in, you’re greeted warmly, and then — you’re served a complete plate: soup, salad, a nourishing main dish, and optional add-ons. 🧘🏽 The entire space feels like a retreat. Tucked near Zilker Park, the lush garden pathways, open-air courtyard, and communal tables invite you to slow down and breathe. You can dine in peace, surrounded by bamboo and stillness, or chat it up with like-minded folks. 🍰 The desserts? Listen… next level. I had a cacao tart that was gluten-free, oil-free, and absolutely divine. Sweetened with whole ingredients that didn’t weigh me down. Pure bliss. 💚 The staff is incredibly kind, and Casa also hosts yoga, movement classes, workshops, and wellness events in the adjoining studios — all part of the Village vibe. This isn’t just a place to eat. It’s a place to reconnect — with your food, your body, and your spirit.
Casa de Luz is a truly inspiring organization making a real difference in the lives of families and children. Their commitment to love, support, and community is evident in everything they do. From providing meals and mentorship to creating a safe and nurturing environment, Casa de Luz embodies compassion in action. The staff and volunteers are passionate, dedicated, and deeply invested in the people they serve. It’s heartwarming to see the positive impact they have on the neighborhood, offering hope and transformation to those who need it most. Casa de Luz is a beacon of light in the community.
Cannot say enough good things about this place. This is my most favorite place to eat in Austin. I love the atmosphere, the food, the workers, everything. I’ve eaten here countless times and it’s always been perfect. The food is high quality, unprocessed and all plant based whole foods. I tell everyone I know to come here. I’ve recently moved out of state and everytime I come back to Austin, this is where I go. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area where you are canopied by the trees. They also have a playground for the kiddos. Inside is a cafeteria like seating area with cozy lighting. They even sell their own cookbooks! This is truly a 10/10 place.
This place is quire magical! Once you step into it, you’re transported in a good, chill, relaxing energy space - it resembles a peaceful meditation retreat where everyone transmits positive energy. The food was great! Very healthy vegetarian dishes - and the desserts were good and healthy as well! I’d definitely come back to try more and relax. Super recommended if you need a getaway from the city life or just life in general.
Great spot, food, great vibe and staff. Bathrooms are a MAJOR issue though. Not enough of them. Poorly maintained, out of paper towels, commonly - things like that. 5 stars if bathrooms were on point.
The best deals here: - the taco breakfasts (I believe on Thurs and Sunday though I could be wrong about the dates and I do wish they posted menus online): about $3.5 for a single taco which you can fill yourself and the corn tortillas are handmade and the highlight here. Wish they had them everyday! -Amaranth porridge for breakfast - about $5 and comes with raisins, nuts, and cinnamon -during dinner hours you can sometimes get a pretty big plate of beans and rice for $8 which is not the best deal but not bad either for something very high quality I work next door and it has been a life saver when I foroet to bring lunch. Once they gave me guac for free with it and that was really good too. The full plates are quite expensive and though the ingredients are good quality it's not really my cup of tea. Mainly because some of the vegetable sides are too heavy on the onion. Some have described the food as bland, which is true, but I honestly like not too heavily spiced food sometimes. Everything has its place. I just wish they went further and didn't use onion/garlic (ik this establishment is not strictly that way but I am talking about ayurvedic practice of avoiding alliums). The cashew sauce is a knock out tho. Speaking of tea, the kukicha and the hibiscus lemongrass are both very good. Again, the type of food and the scene is not my favorite but I have massive respect for this place as an Austin institution that has been doing its thing for 30 years. The guy who runs it and all the staff is very kind especially Sheri(?) Jesus and Eduardo and it's in a beautiful and unique space you can sit in and work all day.
I went for breakfast on a rainy morning. I specifically went here because at a vegan gluten-free place I know I can eat anything since I have a gluten and fish allergy. I am not vegan, but after a night of barbecue, I wanted something healthy. It was a self-serve buffet style. My favorite dish was the white sweet potato soup and the oatmeal. for $12 and some change it’s a great amount of food that kept me full through most of the day. I would not say it was all super flavorful, but it was filling and healthy and that’s what I was looking for.
This place was delicious. The soup was a little bland but all the other dishes were good. I could barely understand the cashier. She was slightly incompetent. The price was $15 per person and included cold or hot tea. Desserts were $5. I had the chocolate pie. It was okay. It needed more fatty creaminess to it. The inside and outside atmosphere was nice. A fireplace would improve the place a bit. I would definitely come here again. You have to pay for parking. $2 per hour. Takes cards or coins.
The outdoor dinning and convenient playground for the kids is awesome. The food is just okay though. I like flavourful food and I'm sure this food appeals to many but just a little salt would dramatically improve the flavor of all the excellent ingredients. I didn't dislike anything but found it pretty boring.
Really wanted to like this place. Looks beautiful with a peaceful walk through. They have young kids at the register and didn't really took the time to explain the service. It was our first time there and had no idea they don't have an actual menu. They just serve you the food of the day. I got a kid allergic to lentils an another who hates onions. After walking around we figured out it's like cafeteria style. You get in line and they'll serve you. Kitchen people don't really help much either, eventhough I speak Spanish, they were really short with me. Over all not impress with food nor experience.
Expensive for weekday lunch, $14/person. Dinner or weekend feel may be more in price now, compared to prices in the past. Desert is expensive, $5 w/tax, but it’s good. Like how conservative the place is though with no light bulbs but natural light. Tea and water. Soup and salad. Reusable utensils and cloth napkins. Simple yet delicious food imo. Have been coming here for several years.
Food is good but it’s never a WARM or HOT meal. Can you please serve the food HOT??????????? I understand salad won’t be hot but the other food on the tray should be HOT please. I hate eating cold food everytime I come here and I know it’s food that should be HOT. Cold soups everytime??????? No yall need to FIX this problem.
The best word to describe the meal I ate at Casa de Luz is mediocre! It was flavorless, the “cooked” veggies were hard and raw, the soup was the worst I’ve ever had… tasteless and had the exact same veggies on my plate. It gives vegan food a bad reputation and the place is so dark I could barely see what I was eating… maybe that’s what they want. And to reply to the owner's comment... I'm not here just to bad mouth your establishment, I'm here to give my honest opinion and I'm sorry it is not a positive one, I wish it were too. I am a vegetarian and cook organic, healthy meals all the time and in addition, they taste good! I don't add condiments to mask or hide anything, I do that to add flavor to it, I don't like spicy/hot foods, I enjoy flavorful foods, not blend food. In addition, I've had vegan food in many places, and they never tasted as or had the texture of the food served here. Maybe you should open yourself up to what you might not want to hear so you can grow as a person and improve the food you serve.
We went for lunch and was super disappointed. Absolutely tasteless food, no service. So for the folks who wants to try it out, here is how this place works. You walk in and pay for a tray and the person in the kitchen will serve what ever they have cooked. Not to bash this place, but if you are health conscious and don't care about the taste, then you may like it. But if you care about what taste and enjoying your meal then this is not the place.
Hoping we just went on an off day. We love trying new vegan restaurants but the food was just ok and all four of us were violently ill afterwards. One of us even ended up in the ER!
It’s funny how many people give this place good reviews. They want to be trendy and join the crowd. They use the cheapest Cisco products (just watch the delivery sometime) and the food is unbelievably bland. Yes they give you a lot of it and yes it’s 17 dollars. It’s a terrible and sad representation of what vegetarian or vegan food could be. You can be trendy or you can be honest. Also this place is not a non profit as they claim. They have opened an entire development investment and another location. It’s disingenuous to say the least.
We went to Casa de Luz last night and it was the cutest place. Everything was fantastic! The problem is my 3 year old and I shared my platter and both of us ended up getting food poisoning later that night. The one thing I remember consuming that tasted completely off was the avocado. It tasted like straight up rotten avocado but I dished up my kid’s food before trying everything. By then my child had consumed her entire avocado portion I gave her. We had come here with my sister and her family and our family friend. I asked everyone else if their avocado tasted rotten or weird at all and everyone said it tasted like it was seasoned just with lemon juice. By then I just plugged my nose and ate my entire portion of avocado because I didn’t want to waste anything. It was extremely dim even for the kitchen area so I wonder if that affected the ability to ensure no rotten food served. We wanted to love this place because everything else tasted amazing and the atmosphere with the nearby playground was incredible. I put a picture of the plate my husband had. Nobody else had a bite from my plate.
Absolutely disgusted by the way my family was treated at Casa de Luz. We are long-time Austin locals and have spent thousands and thousands of dollars here over the years. This morning, I asked the front desk what food was available. I was told black beans. I said great. When I went over to the station, there were only lentils. I calmly asked where the black beans were and was told this was all they had. I took a very small amount of what was left and gave it to my children. Right after that, a fresh pot of black beans was brought out. I asked why this wasn’t communicated to me. Instead of answering, the woman ignored my question and then rudely accused me of taking too many lentils. That was simply not true. I was told I could only have one tiny scoop for five dollars. At that point, this place felt like a rip off, and the service was even worse. This same woman has also yelled at my child in the past for wasting food. I’m sorry, but what I pay for with my own money is nobody’s concern, especially when it comes to whether a child finishes a plate of food or not. No restaurant anywhere should be yelling at a child over food. That is completely unacceptable. I had no choice but to report this to the front desk, leave a review, and attempt to contact management, because this behavior should never happen. Especially not toward long-time locals who have supported this place for years. I am beyond upset about how my children were treated. Casa de Luz was once the one place I could call home when I didn’t have family. It was a place of community and safety for me. Now it feels like a place that nickel-and-dimes customers and shames them, even children, over food. To say I’m disgusted is an understatement. This is not how human beings should be treated, and certainly not in a place that claims to value community. Get your act together. Treat people with respect, and treat our children with care. They are the future of our world.
