Noodle Box Austin Reviews
Great food great price. It’s hard to find a place like this nowadays, no shenanigans, just serving you good food
I’ve been coming here for years and it’s some of my favorite comfort food in Austin. I’ve had almost the whole menu and everything is great, but my personal favorites are the dumpling soup and the mapo tofu noodles. Everything has a unique taste that I haven’t found anywhere else. If you’re new and not sure what to get, try the beef noodle soup.
Chen’s is our go to neighborhood spot! The noodles are our favorite in town and we absolutely love the mala beef soup and scallion pancakes. Service is ridiculously fast and you’ll always see the team working crazy hard to get orders out. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, you can tell it was designed with a ton of thought and heart. Such a gem!
Hidden treasure in an inconspicuous strip mall that is loved by many. Our go-to is the spicy beef noodle soup and lamb skewers. Mr. Chen's food always revitalizes me, especially after a hard day at work. I make sure to come here at least once a week. Ever since I've grown to love his food, I feel incomplete without it 7/18/25 Update: I tried the mala beef noodle soup. It was so good. My only regret was not trying it sooner. If you like the sharp tangyness of Sichuan peppers that come with that slight but pleasant numbing sensation, you'll like this for sure
This is not the place if you want to go on a fancy dinner with your whole family. Chens is small, unassuming but is serving up delicious food for a good price. The dumplings were plump and juicy. The lamb skewers were coated with spice. The wonton soup reminded me of broth my grandma would make. The noodles were chewy and filling.
Rewriting my review from a year ago because Chen’s has changed my life. The food here is so consistent, authentic, and delicious. Mr. Chen is a great guy by the way. Remembers his customers, what they like, and even asks inquisitive questions. I used to go to Xian Famous Foods in New York all the time and since leaving the city, I struggle to find hand-pulled noodles in Texas. Chens’ menu is a perfect mix of Gansu, Shaanxi, and Xinjiang-inspired food. My go to dishes are the lamb with hand pulled noodles, the beef noodle soup, and mala beef noodle soup. You cannot find this food anywhere. And if you do, chances are, it won’t be that good. Skewers are also fantastic. When you walk in, as I did everyday for the last 4 days on a trip to Austin, you’ll see folks from the part of the world that this food originates slurping on noodles without a care in the world, which is a tell-tale sign of how great this little restaurant is, but lately I’ve been seeing a more diverse crowd and I just get happy seeing the maturation of other people’s palettes! The food should be enjoyed by all! Chen’s is a 5 out of 5. Highly-recommended! Oh, the change the life part. I decided to book a trip to China and travel to some of the places in the country where this food originates. Yeah, it’s happening, so thanks Mr. Chen! Old review: George is a great guy and his noodles are even better! I thought it was Xian-styled food, but it was actually Lanzhou! Even better. I had the lamb noodles spicy, along with the Mala beef noodle soup and the skewers! Best food ever!
Food was spectacular! With a few cooks in the back and a semi run down storefront, I knew it was going to be good when I walked in. The owner was very nice, and served us very fast! This will be my new secret spot. For reference, we ordered the black bean noodles and the sesame pockets. Super excited to try the rest of the menu!
Excellent dining at this “hole in the wall” noodle joint! We were looking for a unique spot in Austin and got directed here via Tik Tok. Great hand pulled noodles, very fair prices. The food and services was fast, plenty of options of how to enjoy the noodles…dry or in soups. We went with a beef noodle soup and a lamb noodle soup. I really enjoyed my lamb, nice tender chunks. And the beef was really good too! The sides were fun and we went with a scallion/green onion pancake so good we got a second order, I think they were only $3 and the noodle bowls were $11. Definitely recommend!
Chen's Noodle House (陳記麵館) might not have elaborated decorations inside or out, but provides that familiar dining experience that I had in either China or Taiwan. We ordered the Beef noodle soup, spicy dumpling soup and cold pork (appetizers). All dishes had unique but familiar tastes of back home cooking; the portion size generous and the price was very reasonable. I am more than happy to have "discovered" this place and will definitely be revisiting to try other dishes. As of January 2024: I decided to try their "Mala Beef Fun", which is transparent noodles in numb-spicy (Ma-la) soup. Not bad, but I was expecting a little more numbness... 😅😅😅
with this place is it will ruin all other Chinese restaurants for you. Absolutely the best noodles in Austin. Spicy lamb is my go to. Also, hands down best dumplings I’ve ever had. Mr. Chen is a very nice guy with such a talent for what he does. He will make the noodles right there in front of you and there’s nothing like his fresh noodles. I cannot recommend this place enough. I absolutely love it.
I've been coming here for 5 years and I have nothing but positive things to say about. The staff is friendly and the food is incredible. The dumplings are solid, same with the dumpling soup, but my go to is the beef noodle soup. If you are looking for some homemade noodles in north austin, this is the spot!
The dishes I ordered were nut allergy friendly. A small mom & pop shop type of restaurant, Chen's sits in the corner of a plaza filled with the most stereotypical Asian restaurant names in the city. However, Chen's manages to stand out and deliver above and beyond. We arrived around 7pm and it took about 45 minutes to order and get food. There is very limited seating, only about 6-8 tables. I saw a good number of people doing take-out. Dumplings: Great portions. They may look like frozen dumplings, but they were pretty flavorful with a nice thick shell and was served with very flavorful chili oil. Mala Beef Noodle Soup N9: Crazy spicy and a little oil-y. I wouldn't drink the soup here but it made the noodles, baby bok choy, and beef packed with flavor. The noodles were fantastic, and they are made from scratch in house. Lamb Skewers: I could eat these all day long. Flavorful, tender, and very sharable. We initially sat outside but our food kept being swarmed with flies. We moved indoors and enjoyed our meal a lot better. Overall, I would give Chen's a 4.5/5 if I could, only because of the annoyance in flies.
Great hole in the wall, no frills place!! The food was amazing!! Everything came out quickly. We got lamb noodles and chicken stir fried noodles. The handmade noodles were so chewy, had a great texture and both the dishes tasted excellent. We also got green onion pancake. It was super crispy and flaky, tasted great
You order at the counter. The restaurant itself is very small. It also self clean, but they will bring the food to you. I order the sesame pastry, chicken stir fried, and hot oil seared noodle. The hot oil seared noodle was my favorite. It came with slices of beef, and I love the flavoring. The sesame pastry is pack with meat. It’s a bit too salty for me, but it still good. The noodle in the stir fried is the chewy type which is my favorite. Overall, the food here is good and affordable.
Chens is a good experience. Hot soup, delicious dumplings, and plentiful portions are Chens' strong suit. The menu is large and clearly visible, with bright colors and easy to pick items. The dining room is a little small, and most all of the tables were dirty. My only complaint was lack of beverages to choose from, they offer very small cups it's too hot outside for 2oz of water 💧 lol I bought the bottle water but they only had 2 left. All in all will be back to try again.
Chen’s is a super solid noodle and dumpling house. Nestled in this small shopping plaza, it’s one of the few things that hasn’t changed in recent years. I’ve always been a huge fan of the sesame pockets here. They outside is light and airy and slightly sweet. It’s filled with braised sliced pork and not dry at all. It’s probably my favorite thing on the menu, but there is plenty of great options to try.
Came in with the assumption that long standing "hole in the wall" restaurants can often be the best. For us unfortunately, it didn't deliver. Staff was nice enough, but from MY PERSPECTIVE (not making any claims) place felt dirty, soup appeared to have red dye and I assume msg, lamb in husband's noodle dish tasted like dog food. Noodles were good! Just heavy. Basically, from our experience, food was not worth the grimey hole in the wall vibes.
Another spot that was hyped for freshness and authentic food, but unfortunately we found it mid. The prices are good, food was okay. Nothing exactly bad at all. Just wasn't something we loved . We had the spicy beef noodles, which wasn't very spicy at all. The green onion pancakes were great. So overall, I gave this place 3 stars.
Sesame Pocket with pork, Mala beef noodle soup and House special shaved noodle with pork. Everything was great except the Mala Beef noodle soup was a little too pungent for my taste. But the House special shaved noodle is one of the best I have had, the texture of the noodle, chewy, hearty but not doughy, if that make any sense.. In terms of dine-in atmosphere: Its a small dining area, tables are close together, room for improvement in the cleaniness department.
