Restaurant François Austin Reviews
Hands down one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in Austin. The service was next level, super warm, professional, and just spot on. Everything we ordered was 🔥 seriously high quality, perfectly cooked, and beautifully plated. The place itself is gorgeous, stylish, and feels special the second you walk in. I came here to celebrate my birthday, and they absolutely nailed it. They surprised me with a personalized birthday page printed inside the menu (!!) and also gave me a birthday card. Such a cool, thoughtful touch and totally unexpected and so appreciated. This wasn’t just dinner, it felt like a full on experience. Unique, classy, and genuinely memorable. Perfect for celebrations or when you want to treat yourself to something special. 10/10 would come back
I went and celebrated my birthday recently at Restaurant Francois and it was nothing short of amazing. Every dish was delectable but some of the fan favorites were the French Onion Soup (mouth is watering just thinking of it), Crab Villon, Pomme Frites and the Dry Age Porterhouse. Not only was everything delicious but the service and staff were top tier! Everyone from the hostess to additional servers were kind, helpful and just a joy. Mark and Hannah took care of us the most and they were spectacular. Very knowledgeable about the menu and the 20 questions I asked, very accommodating and overall enjoyable to have during our dining experience. We finished up our night with a handful of desserts, you can’t go wrong with what you choose, however, the Profiteroles stole my heart with the warm chocolate sauce to dip them. Thank you Restaurant Francois for having our group, it was simply the best night and dining experience. Everyone left happy and very impressed with the level of service and execution, especially since the restaurant had only been open for 2 weeks.
Restaurant François delivered an absolutely perfect night. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt intimate and elevated without being pretentious. We started with the escargot, which was rich, buttery, and perfectly seasoned — a classic done right. The duck two ways was outstanding, with incredible depth of flavor and beautiful execution. The Boneless Wagyu Short Ribs Bourguignon completely stole the show: melt-in-your-mouth tender, deeply savory, and comfort food taken to a luxury level. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and truly memorable. Service was attentive and seamless, making the entire evening feel special from start to finish. If you’re looking for refined French cuisine in downtown Austin, Restaurant François is an absolute must. We can’t wait to return.
A Beautiful French Dining Experience in Austin My family and I had dinner at François last Saturday, and the entire evening was outstanding. The service was warm and attentive, managers came by a couple of times to check on us, which made the experience feel personal and genuinely welcoming. The food was truly exceptional. The duck absolutely phenomenal. It genuinely reminded me of the top bouchons in Lyon. Beautifully cooked, rich, and full of classic French character. The lamb was tender, flavorful, and prepared with real finesse. Ok The Dover sole was one of the best I’ve had in the last 10 years—delicate, buttery, and beautifully cooked. If there was one dish that could use a touch more refinement, it would be the soufflé. It was good, but I felt it needed a bit more flavor and love to match the incredible standard set by the rest of the menu. Overall, François is a gem in Austin—authentic French cuisine, excellent service, and a dining experience that feels truly special. We will definitely be returning.
Went last night for Valentine’s Day and I saw that there were a few mixed reviews on here, but WOW, let me tell you, this restaurant was truly beyond spectacular. I can honestly say, it was one of the best meals I’ve had in a while. I also have Celiac and they were super knowledgeable on what I could and couldn’t eat and made tweaks to dishes even to make them celiac-safe for me! Here’s what we ordered: - Pepe Le Jardiniere cocktail - Moulin à Passion cocktail - beef tallow fries (my boyfriend who doesn’t have celiac got these and is obsessed) - chilled gulf shrimp - Dover sole - petite filet - asparagus w/ hollandaise - crème brûlée Simply 10/10 meal & experience
Restaurant François delivered a truly memorable French dining experience, perfect for a special occasion. From the first bite to the final flourish, everything was executed with elegance and care. We began with Comté cheese popovers, warm, airy, and deeply flavorful, followed by the Jumbo Lump Crab Villon, which was fresh, delicately seasoned, and beautifully balanced. These appetizers set a high standard for the evening. For the main courses, the Stuffed Lamb Saddle en Croûte was outstanding—tender, richly flavored, and wrapped in a perfectly golden crust. The Swordfish Steak au Poivre was equally impressive, cooked to perfection with a bold yet refined pepper sauce. On the side, the Jumbo Asparagus with Hollandaise was vibrant and indulgent, a classic done right. To finish our birthday celebration, we shared the Soufflé of the Moment, light, decadent, and flawlessly prepared—an unforgettable ending to a remarkable meal. Special recognition goes to our server, Marc, whose professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail elevated the entire experience. His service was impeccable without ever feeling intrusive. Restaurant François is a must-visit for anyone seeking refined French cuisine, exceptional service, and a truly celebratory dining atmospher
We dined at Restaurant François for our 3 year anniversary and just had the absolute best time thanks to our server (who’s name I am completely blanking on at the moment), the delicious food, the vibe of the establishment & of all the workers as a whole and just the kindness & attentiveness we received from the staff. We even got an anniversary card singed by the staff which is just the loveliest thing any establishment has done for us. Our server went above and beyond, as we are not from Texas, and wrote down some after dinner recommendation as well as some cities around the area to check out when we could. Absolutely loved it and will be coming back to Austin, TX just to be able to dine here again. 🔥
Truly one of the best restaurants in Austin! Immersive, glamorous, and attentive service. I’d recommend the filet mignon and the beef bourguignon - both were extremely tender and flavorful. I particularly enjoyed the extensive dessert drink menu. This would be the perfect option for an anniversary or birthday.
One of the best experiences we have ever had in terms of service. Food was really good too. Duck was the highlight as well as the desserts! Clear this place is managed super well. Thank you for the memorable night!
I really enjoyed this dinner. The restaurant is very beautiful designed and the service was great. Josiah knew the menu and made great recommendations. Wine list is great but it is a bit pricey. We had the escargot and beef tartare for appetizers and they were excellent. Dover sole was the entre and was great. Sole can have lots of bones if it is not done right and this one did not have any. Soufflé with crème anglaise was dessert.
Outstanding new addition to the Guy&Larry RG (e.g., Red Ash, Roaring Fork, ATX Cocina, and Salty Sow) portfolio. Austin has needed a quality french destination and Francois DELIVERS! Service is outstanding. Front of house is welcoming and accommodating. Bar staff is engaging, oh-so-very talented, and friendly. Shout out to Ryan, Jay, and Jess for keeping us well fed, well served, and entertained during our visit! Service staff all know their stuff, too. Management is visible and engaged—they'll make sure you're having an outstanding experience. Food is delicious. The deviled eggs are perfection. Beef tartare has a hint of horseradish that's surprising and delightful. The popovers rival Jeffreys' (and that's saying something)! Rabbit tagliatelle has all the fall flavors and warmth you'd want. Creme Brûlée was perfect. The extensive by the glass list (nearly 20 options) makes for good spirts all around. And the Manhattan cocktails were 10/10. Atmosphere is really nice—a teleportation to a vibrant Paris bistro. The space is beautiful. It's energetic but not deafening. The open kitchen provides a fun vantage into how Chef Marmulstein and his team create their delicious dishes. A table near the kitchen is a must if you like to watch the magic happen. We cannot wait to go back!
Just fantastic. Came for drinks and a bite at the bar (reservation recommended—had attempted to walk in on a weekend prior, to no avail) and can’t say enough good things. The vibe was elegant yet not stuffy, service was attentive & friendly, food was fantastic. We had the steak tartare, a bananas foster soufflé, French onion soup, crab villon, and the popovers (highly recommend using the popover as a scoop for the crab, as recommended by the chef—great combo). Everything was excellent—will definitely be back!
Restaurant François is the newest hot spot in downtown Austin’s 2nd Street District! The comté cheese popovers alone should be illegal—seriously some of the best bites I’ve ever had. Every dish we tried was outstanding, and with their GM Emma at the helm, you can tell this place is headed for big things. Chelsea was an absolute blast as our server (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a British accent?). Fantastic service, incredible food, great atmosphere. This spot is definitely going to be a regular on our list!
This place is SO good. We were really impressed. The Jumbo Crab Villon was a generous portion of crab and the white wine sauce was sooo good. For my entree, I got the Filet Mignon and it was the best steak I’ve had in Austin. Perfectly cooked with a delicious crust. Definitely recommend the mushrooms for a side! Dessert was profiterole- huge portion and so good! Loved everything, will definitely be back

Absolutely loved this new addition to downtown! The staff was incredible, the food was outstanding, and the atmosphere was the perfect mix of upscale and welcoming. Tried this new restaurant for a date night and it was amazing. The atmosphere was cozy but upscale and the food and drinks were delicious. Will be coming back!
This is going to be the best restaurant in Austin. Food is exceptional as is the service. The kitchen under the leadership of chef Harold Marmulstein will consistently produce amazing dishes. Donald Reinhardt
Restaurant Francois delivered an absolutely flawless dinner for a special occasion. The space is stunning, the service was impeccable, and the food was simply 5-star+. We had the duck, crudo, and popovers - every single dish was excellent. The cocktails were phenomenal too! What made the evening even more special were the thoughtful touches - our names at the bar when we arrived and a personalized acknowledgment in our menu. Manager Emma Brown and her team clearly care about creating memorable experiences, not just great meals. I split my time between Austin and NYC, and Restaurant Francois is absolutely top-notch by either city's standards. Will definitely be back! New Austin fave!!! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
My friend from out of town was visiting me in Austin that had made us reservations to Francious almost 2 weeks ago. After the holiday craze I just had to come back to review this place because of how much it stands out compared to all the other so called proclaimed fine dining places in Austin. Francious is cut from a different cloth. From the decor, to the quality of food, and most importantly the level of service. During our time in Austin, we’ve been to Bobs, Trulucks, Perry’s, and Flemmings. However, Francois stood out the most. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s relatively new but I will say the vibe is different and I’m so happy to have dined in a French restaurant. I don’t think Austin has a French place. The food was spectacular and our server probably was the best one we’ve ever had. I believed his name was Claudio and was extremely knowledgeable and so attentive. He gave us above and beyond information on ingredients and even his recommendations on pairing. I’m not sure how it’s possible to retain so much information but thanks for the incredible experience. You will be seeing us again. Reservation name was under Rhode.
A very good dinner for our wedding anniversary. The setting, atmosphere, food, and service were absolutely perfect. The beef bourguignon and lamb dishes were generous and delicious. Eating at a table with beautiful tableware and white tablecloths in a quiet setting where you can have conversations with each other is very pleasant. I am delighted to have finally found a French restaurant in Austin. Bravo to the chef and his team. And as a bonus: dessert was complimentary for our wedding anniversary. The profiteroles are simply delicious, even if you are no longer hungry!
Our first dinner at Restaurant François was nothing short of magical. This is easily the best new restaurant in Austin, and in my opinion, Chef Harold Marmulstein is the best chef in the city. The level of execution, flavor, and hospitality puts Restaurant François firmly in the category of first-class, top-tier Austin fine dining. From the moment we walked in, we were surrounded by excellence. The interior design is absolutely stunning, black & white & gold with a lovely selection of hanging artwork. It feels warm and swanky like Paris in the 1930s, in the heart of downtown Austin. Our server, John, was a master of hospitality. He was warm, intuitive, and had a fun little touch for our 9-year-old that made the night even more memorable. The sommelier, Gabby, was also incredible. Based on the flavor profiles we chatted with her about, she recommended two fabulous and interesting wines. Truly expert-level wine selection and service. And the food… perfection. We loved every dish that hit our table, even ordered a second round of the Tuna Crudo because our daughter loved it so much. The Swordfish had a peppercorn crust on it that was unique and delicious, this was my favorite dish. The Filet Mignon was flawlessly cooked and melt-in-your-mouth tender, it had a bright sort of rough-chopped herb butter that really elevated it. The Beef Bourguignon was rich and tender, paired perfectly with our bottle of CdP. We had a side dish of cabbage that was a surprise standout: savory, buttery, unforgettable. The potatoes au gratin were fluffy, cheesy perfection. OMG and the chocolate mousse was so good I contemplated licking the bowl. Restaurant François is a best-in-class addition to Austin restaurants, and a must-visit for anyone seeking elevated dining, exceptional service, and world-class French cuisine. Though it's no surprise, coming from the brilliant minds of veteran restauranteurs Harold, Guy, Larry and the whole team. This is a must-experience. We can’t wait to go back!
Comte’ Cheese Popovers! First and foremost - WOW!!!! The simple apps can be amazing! First time trying this restaurant and the experience was great. Introduction to this place by those who know their food fare! We were there to do drinks and tasting of several dishes on a Saturday around 5:30 after they opened. The staff was very accommodating upon arrival. We sat at the bar for a bit (great service) and then transferred to a table. Of course, getting there early, it was fairly quiet as the night (and wine) progressed, has any good restaurant does, it got a little louder, but nothing too crazy. There were four of us and we shared all of these. Tried the Escargot, the Steak Tatar, Pappardelle, scallops, The Belgian Endive and Green Apple Salad and Haricots Verte Almondine ( Green beans with almonds😁). One glass of Bourbon and two glasses of wine were also had. We'll have to come back for a few of the main dishes when we have more time. The ambience was a little similar to J Carver‘s steakhouse (yet another amazing restaurant - don't just go there for steaks, go for the fish dishes). Definitely a great French vibe. They had some pretty cool vintage silver flatware. You should try it out
Great service! The staff really goes out of their way to make sure you have good experience. We came in without a reservation and they were able to accommodate us. The dover fish, beef tartare, chocolate soufflé are a MUST. I felt the lemon tart was a bit water down perhaps undercooked, but the flavor was light and not as heavy as others. The lobster pasta had a bit of strong flavor and the noodles didn’t do it for me. The crab appetizer was also delicious and I would repeat. They have a great wine selection. It is a very nice dinner spot, great for business or a night out. I love the open kitchen concept, they have nothing to hide! Bathrooms are individual stalls, which can cause a bit of a wait.

I wanted to love it. The vibe and service are great. The fried are top notch. Maybe the best in town. Skinny and prepared in beef tallow. Yum. The milk punch special was also great. A beet salad with feta and pistachio was light and nice. The French onion soup was bland, as was the lobster angel hair.
It is sad when the highlight of the dinner is the pomme frites. We tried the following dishes: - Pate Maison: it was ok. - Chef crudo du jour: the fish lacked basic seasoning and it was too meaty for crudo. - Escargot: those were good but I wish they had even more garlic. - Veal (it was a special): it was BAD! It was rubbery, had water taste in it, no seasoning. We asked for it medium rare, it came well done (it was grey), I don’t know if they overcooked it or reheated it or what. The only good part was the puff pastries with chicken liver mousse, I would put those as a menu item, they were excellent. - Pomme frites: they were crispy and well seasoned

The pate and escargot were good. The pate was a country sweetbreads pate, good but I prefer a smoother pate. The escargot could have used more garlic but I love garlic and butter with a little escargot on the side 😄. The puff pastry that came with it was nice and flaky. The crudo du jour was not very good. I don't remember the name of the fish but it was tough and chewy. It could have used more citrus and salt too. The pommes frites were excellent and with the aioli 👌. The veal medallions were bad, it was one of the specials. They were tough and chewy without much taste but the chicken liver mousse puff pastries that came with it were excellent. I wish the chicken liver mousse was on the regular menu. The service was very good. Getting the car from the valet after dinner was a little disorganized. The waiter brought the ticket to the valet while we were getting the check but the car wasn't ready by the time we went outside 10 minutes later. He kept pointing to cars asking if that was our car. It wasn't. He had to run and get the car while we waited.
Gave it a try after seeing few early positive reviews which proved to be either wrong or most likely paid influencers. Deviled eggs wirh black truffle were flavorless, steak tartate was overpowered from mustard flavor , Francois lettuce salad was good. Main course duck 2 ways was bland served skin was not crispy at all and the cabbage side was horrible. French fries were one of the best ones we've ever had. We were excited after our bland meal for the chocolate souffle , that we ordered at same time as our main course since it takes 20mins but unfortunately was not good at all we left most of it untouched . To their credit mamager stopped by and asked how things were since she noticed we didnt finish most of our food. She ended up giving us about $40 credit on food which was a nice touch but would have preferred 5o pay full price and have good meal with good tasting dishes.
While I dined at this restaurant, I handed my truck over in perfect condition, I got it back damaged. That’s the fact. What followed was a masterclass in professional gaslighting. The response wasn’t just dismissive, it was a pathetic, polished denial backed by absolutely nothing. No footage, no logs, just a hollow "we reviewed it" and a miracle conclusion that they aren’t responsible. “Rent a horn” the valet company, is run by Poul Olufsen, who embodies every tired stereotype of a man trying to make a liability vanish. Dealing with him was a carousel of shifting narratives and unearned confidence. If you’re going to be arrogant enough to reach a "firm conclusion," have the spine to show the evidence that supports it. Until then, your word is worthless. Restaurant François is just as complicit. They are happy to show off about their high-end service until it actually costs them something. The second a guest is wronged, they hide behind the "third-party vendor" excuse like cowards. From a customer’s perspective, that’s total garbage. I didn’t hire a vendor; I used the service you put at your front door. You sold the "experience," and now you own the failure. If your business model relies on damaging guest property and then demanding we "trust you" while you hide the evidence, you shouldn't be in business at all. I came for a meal and left with a repair bill and a clear lesson: Restaurant François and Rent A Horn are run by people who lack the basic integrity to take responsibility for their own mess.
