Pete's Plaza Cafe Avalon Reviews
The guacamole was the best I have ever had. Unfortunately they ran out of avocados the next day when I went back for more. Would go back to Avalon just for the guac at Pete's.
Great food! Huge portions! Friendly staff highly recommend!
Pete's Avalon's Plaza Cafe served as a perfect precursor to the Bison Expedition. Basically pregame for the 4hr tour that was booked which was incredible. We definitely got the money's worth.
Nice spot to enjoy the outdoors & scenery. The guys that run it are helpful and on it! Good food and drinks, lots of options too!
Tacos delicious drinks great, and the live music just tops it off
The cute lady works there is the best! She was so friendly and nice. Happy hour taco and half off beer was great!
I ate here a couple of times had the buffalo burger and a double cheese burger . I gotta say Remember carls jr if it doesn't get all over the place it doent belong in your face . well thats petes burgers for sure . ill be back
happy hour as the least expensive place to eat in town, and some drinks too. $1 chicken tacos during happy hour
Happy hour is great. $1 tacos, $3 bud lights, $4 margaritas. The tacos are excellent. Service is fast and friendly. Artichoke heart quesadillas are an interesting and delightful combination.
Pete! You're supposed to be open at 7! What happened? That's okay. We didn't take it personally. We came back the next day and you delivered. Pancakes - light and delicious; muffin sandwich - a culinary delight; coffee - hot. Yay, Pete! And we loved your friendly, efficient staff.
They are the fastest service on the island. The bacon egg and cheese sandwich was delicious. They do offer shots and alcohol to.
The only place that serves tacos before 11 am, and they were delicious! The cook is amazing, the service is fabulous, and drinks are epic! Thanks, Pete's
Just a very short walk up the street from the waterfront, you'll find Pete's Cafe, an authentic roadside Mexican cantina. Great food, strong drinks, varied menu with great service. This is a must-visit place when you're in Avalon.
Great food, especially breakfast. The outdoor tables are easy if you have kids with strollers. There are typically no lines here, or just a short line.
The food is great here, They have all u can eat breakfast and happy hour. They have good music. The staff here is super friendly. I loved my experience here.
$1.50 Tacos, great margherita's, awesome staff. Please go here whenever you are on the Island
We received excellent service. Fabian our waiter was very friendly and helpful. The food portions were pretty sized and the food was delicioso! Thank you for making our visit memorable.
Love this place, my husband and I eat here very often and the margaritas are the best! The service is spot on, and the food is terrific! Definitely stop by and show them some love!!
Súper amigables. Boom asada Fries and great price( low price comprare to other places here). Definitely recommend. By far the best Mexican food on the island, thank you to the staff. They were so good I forgot to take a picture 🤗
First place we stopped to eat on the island and I'm glad we did! Friendly service, great relaxed atmosphere, and tasty food. We came for breakfast and it was definitely worth it!
The cashier was very king selling us pizza even though they were about to close
This is my go-to place when I'm making a quick trip from the interior into Avalon. With one of the best happy hour taco specials around you know you're going to get good food when you go to Pete's. I always recommend the artichoke quesadilla. The shrimp, no matter how you have them, are always delicious. Eat at Pete's and your taste buds will always love you.
Awesome food. Went for happy hour tacos which were a dollar each, asada, chicken and carnitas only. We don't eat meat but my mother does so she was happy. We ordered fish tacos with daughter and they were delicious. My mom enjoyed her tacos so much she ate 6 of them. Gaby and Manuel were awesome, great costumer service totally above and beyond!! We left so happy and full😁. They also serve margaritas, and others spirits. Smoothie, milk shakes ice cream and more.
Great place for a quick bite and beer before an expedition! The grilled shrimp tacos are so good and same with the asada! One or two tacos is enough to hold you til dinner. So yummy!
Vern playing live music here is why we stopped. Antonio and Lorena kept us here with their great happy hour drinks and tacos! This is a great place to chill. Be sure to add it to your list when you come to Catalina!
Carne asada burritos were delicious and had a ton of steak vs beans, plus service was perfection. The salsa was the best I’ve had and has a fire roasted taste and look. Will come back every Catalina visit.
This ended up being my favorite place to go. Strong drinks, it was amazing! And great live music every night. I never got around to trying the food, but I watched them chopping up steaks with EXCELLENT marbling for meal prep. Lots of room to navigate the stroller around too.. that turned out to be a great challenge in Avalon.
Amazing tacos. Butter pecan milkshake!? Good lord. Happened to come for happy hour and paid half price for margaritas. Strawberry one was my fave. Slow line progression but really it's the best the small staff could do. A great break between activities on the island, especially mini golf.
The service was great and cheerful. The food was good, but depends in what you get. The bagel breakfast sandwich was great, but the tour breakfast was just OK. We had lunch at the same place the day before and it was also great. As with everything in the Catalina Island, the food was way overpriced. I would go back for another try.
So cool, Closest thing to a chinchorro on Catalina. The food was great, I had asada tacos there were fully loaded, and a breakfast burrito the bext day. The burrito was huge!
I love finding hidden gems when I explore. The shrimp tacos were absolutely the best, the fish tacos were the bomb. Watch out for the hot sauce they give you with them though, it will knock your socks off. Don't even get me started on the fresh Margaritas simply the best ever. Reasonable priced too.
Great little live music cafe with tacos , ceviche , beer . Little locals spot that is worth checking out !
I love Pete’s cafe, ESPECIALLY the happy hour deals. $1.50 tacos & $5 margs- you can’t beat it. So yummy and they’re open until 2am.
Tacos and Beer! A great combination. The asada taco was a healthy portion of meat topped with fresh onion guacamole sauce. Tortilla held together and added a wonderful chew. Salsa has a nice heat. Smokey elements. Outside seating. And super fast and friendly service. 100% would come back.
My visit to Pete’s Cafe was fantastic. It’s a great spot away from the hustle and bustle, which made it really relaxing. The selection of food was impressive, and their happy hour deals were unbeatable. We enjoyed the cheap tacos during happy hour and the big burrito. The atmosphere and friendly service made the experience even better. Highly recommend!
Pete’s is the only one who opens if you are hungry after 9 pm. As you may know most of the restaurants in the island close at 8 pm. And all the bars close around 10 pm. - midnight, it’s going to be a problem if you’re hungry after 9 pm. But no worries you have Pete’s open all day all night long from 7 am. - 2 am. The food here was good and excellent service. I really appreciated for your late night work!!
Stopped by here for lunch. This place has the good Nachos. We tried the AL pastor and carnitas double meat Nachos the carnitas were really good.
Happy hour, 2 chicken tacos and a beer 7.38. are they the best, nope for the price 5 star.
I got the breaded fish sandwich with fries and a drink, my wife got the calamary, the fish definetly tasted fresh and was very delicious. And so was the fish tacos...Def recommend this place
Get off the strip and get the goods. Cool chill vibe, great prices. Ceviche is bomb
Seems shady but was the best food in Avalon. Seriously everything else sucked and was overrated I would take a boat for 2 hours both ways in level 7 torrential rain and swells just to eat this again.
Pete’s is very affordable and offer high-quality food. It is open from 9am- 2am. The café is conveniently located next to the Bison Expedition meeting area. The café offers a delicious selection of Mexican American cuisine and alcoholic beverages. The breakfast burrito is big enough to share and it comes with sour cream and salsa. The breakfast burrito is packed with generous pieces of savory bacon and scrambled egg, blended with melted cheddar cheese.
The cook here is very kind and generous. The attached photo is a single meal split in two.

Love this place, love the food, love the staff! We visit every Fall for a couple of months on our boat and this is our go-to place. The asada tacos are amazing and they make a mean margarita. Prices are best at Happy Hour and often times there is live music. Service has always been awesome with a smile 😁
Amazing food, vibes, and music. We ate here one time and then every night after.

I love Pete's. We go for happy hour with $1 tacos and half price margaritas. People are very nice.
This place was a great, the only issue I had and it's not an exclusive issue to just the particular establishment but to most of the places on the island is sometime they lacked an ingredient or two.
Shrimp tacos are really good. Even though I love spice, I wish they had something milder (like tartar sauce) to go with the tacos. The steak quesadillas were good, but very oily, and would have been better with lettuce and tomatoes.
Fast, tasty, open late, and not horribly priced. I went there twice and had the burrito asada, chicken tacos, and fish tacos. Chicken was a little dry, but I can whole heatedly recommend their other selections.
My wife and I happened upon this place when we had some time to kill. So glad we did! Great happy hour, solid drinks, and authentic Mexican food. We each had some street tacos and beer. We then had a super delicious piña colada. It’s an outdoor place with outdoor seating only, but perfect for the island hang out. Honestly, taste-wise it was probably our favorite place in Catalina. Great casual bite to eat with good drinks.
Just about the best place on the island for a quick breakfast or lunch. I have never received a bad meal from Pete's. Nice sized meal for a good price. Only complaint is that occasionally there is a long wait time. Probably to be expected, however, there is often a large crowd.
This was our finish line for Fantastic Catalina race. Although we only had beer and chips and salsa...both were very tasty. Outdoor, porch dining gave it a neighborhood feel. Other folks who participated in the race ordered food and it smelled delicious, but I didn't ask them how it tasted...but they cleaned their plates, so that says a lot.
I really like Pete’s! They let us sit there with our drinks and dogs as long as we wanted.
So, this place was interesting. No indoor seating, but cheap happy hour food and margaritas. Nice place to sit outside and enjoy the weather under a canopy. I had a chicken taco here, it was not so great, but others I was with really loved the margaritas (saying they were the best they had had) and said the shrimp tacos were really good. The staff are interesting characters and made it fun and never minded us hanging around for awhile chatting.
It's an outdoor place to get some food. It was decent but not great. More affordable than many places on the island.
I would have rated this place a 5 start, Not only because is the only fast food open in Catalina Island 24/7 you should be so rude (talking about the only employee attending at night shift that January 17, 2026) to rude.. other than that food is good, Carne asada fries, carne asada burrito..

Fantastic food, good service and open late! Highly recommend if you're heading out to catalina!

We had the tacos. 4 of them to be specific. They weren’t the best tacos I’ve ever had, but they were fairly descent and overpriced at approximately $6.00 per taco but it is on a very remote island and I’ll blame it on the additional cost of importing food. I personally wouldn’t do it again but to each their own.
Pete's Avalon Plaza Cafe is a stand that serves a variety of fare: Mexican favorites like tacos (asada, chicken, shrimp), nachos and burritos, to fish and chips and pizza among other items. They serve sodas as well and alcohol (beer, margaritas, etc). The stand is open from morning (they offer breakfast) to late at night (11pm). It sits in a lot adjacent to where tourists can catch island tours. Like pretty much all restaurants on the island, prices are kind of high. Service is friendly here and reasonably fast. Customers place their order at one window and pick up their food at another. There are tables under a large canopy, everything is simple.
It's a nice place. Inexpensive and the guys working there are always happy and friendly. The food and drinks are good and they stay open past 11:00 p.m which is great for tourists. The place to go for a quick bite to eat even late at night.
Casual location with outdoor seating only. It's more like a permanent food truck than a restaurant. Nice staff, but limited menu. We observed the handling of raw meat and it wasn't up to par.
Tasteless, bland burger and carne asada meat. They got our order wrong and gave us a hard time about fixing it. Until a nice young lady helped me out and fixed it for us. Fries were just ok.
The food was good, but very overpriced and the staff were quite rude. Asked where to refill water and was lied to and then tried to upsell me on bottled water.
Not vegan friendly at all, and make sure the lady at the register is here because the cook is not feeling it. He cooked my fries in the fryer used for the fish. My wife isn't even vegan and her chicken tacos tasted old, and her asada tacos were served cold
The customer service was great. The man in the front was very kind. I got chicken tacos and French toast. My chicken tacos were extremely dry. My sister says her shrimp tacos was good. The French toast was comparatively very good.
Tried the chicken taco and shrimp, tacos, French toast, and Pete’s omelette burrito. Out of these only the French toast and shrimp tacos was fine . Rest of the food was quite subpar. Service was great. The people are great location. Excellent unfortunately the food is not that great.
Just happen to be in the area for happy hour. $1.50 great deal. NOPE. Deal is on chicken only which is not mentioned anywhere. Chicken was quite dry. Wanted to try out couple other things on the menu but since the tacos weren't good we just left.
I don’t normally write reviews, but this place deserves a warning. I paid $27 for Carne Asada Fries, and it was a complete waste of money. The fries were way too salty, and honestly, the whole dish was gross. I don’t even know how it’s possible to mess up Carne Asada fries, but they did. For reference, you can get the same dish in San Diego or Orange County for around $14, and it actually tastes good, nothing like what I got here. I’ll be sticking to those spots from now on. Save your money and go somewhere else. This place isn’t worth the hype.
Thought we’d have a quick taco since their happy hour seemed like an amazing deal! $1.50, wow!! Will gladly sample to know a good place. Ordered tacos, puzzled why so much? Oh, you need to ASK SPECIFICALLY FOR THE HH TACOS. HH is chicken only. Otherwise, $6 each and they say NOTHING to you about it when you order and there is NOTHING saying that anywhere. Now I have no issue paying for good food, but I don’t like being tricked. We’ll be here for three days. Guess where I WON’T be eating the whole time we’re here or ANY time we come back.

Really bad experience here. The meat and tortilla are marinated in fat and it doesn't taste good at all. Also the ice tea was terrible and it was all over priced. I would not come back.
Absolute garbage food and even worse service! Do not waste your time or money. There are several much better places to eat!
Waaaay overpriced. A regular burrito for $20! A total ripoff of what usually costs 6-7 dollars. Only paid because it was the only place open at the time. Canned sodas are $4. Do yourself a favor and buy something in advance if you get hungry late at night. Or go to the vons down the street. FYI burrito was served on small paper plate with no wrapping so you have to hold it directly with your hands, no sink to wash up since it's a food stand not a restaurant.
One of the few open late night. Would try somewhere else. Got carne asada fries that were not good. They used nacho cheese that had chili beans mix into it which kinda killed the carne asada taste. Would’ve been better with just shredded cheese or regular nacho cheese. Plus the chili beans were burnt so the food had a burnt taste to it.
Taco meat was extremely dry and upset our stomachs. Got a michelada served to me in a paper coke cup with a surprising $14 price tag
I had a chicken tacos ,the chicken was super to dry,I requested without onions/cilantro,they put extra of them, when I was complaing about it,I didn't get an apology nothing the cook just gave me a crazy look,i asked for limes and i got rotten limes that were black and brown from outside
Food was ok, but when i realized i just paid $11. For a hot dog.... This was my second time the first time had tacos...do not get the steak tacos. The carnitas tacos would have been worth going back for if i wouldn't have been ripped for the hot dogs
Horrific food poisoning here in 2018. I was hospitalized for two days and taken by ambulance. I do not recommend eating here if it was the last place on earth.
This place plays hideous and trashy loud live “music” on the weekends, ruining the relaxing Catalina experience for everyone in Avalon. Absolute worst drumming set I’ve ever heard. You can’t escape the noise! Nightmare. Avoid!
Staff shushed my wife when she asked if there would be live music. We were really confused.
Asked what was in the carne asada burrito. Saw one in the griddle being made. Looked delicious. My eyes fooled me. It was filled with pinto beans
Just had a carne asada burrito here, it was just so so, definitely needs the hot salsa to bury the lack of seasoning. This is second time I've been to this establishment. First time, I had their tacos, which were terrible and without flavor, I litterally threw away the leftovers after a few bites. Their margarita's come from a can, so no points for decent drinks. You can do yourself better by going almost anywhere else on the island.
Without a shadow of a doubt the worst tacos I have ever had in my life. We had them during happy hour for $1 each. Had I known how bad quality, taste they were, I wouldn’t eat them even if they paid me to do so. Worst food experience in years.
We ordered 6 one dollar tacos and 2 sodas. thought we were getting a deal until it cameout to 16 dollars, the cokes came out to 6 dollars a piece, we felt strong armed. Tacos were served dry with no toppings, he said we would have to pay for cabbage, he said we had to pay!!! what the what?!?!?! SAD 😔 ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE, I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND YOU EAT HERE UNLESS YOU LIKE TO BE STRONG ARMED AND MANIPULATED FOR MONEY!
Food was less in quantity with higher prices. They treat well with the customer who ordered their drinks I thought so. But they were annoyed with the people who ask for their price for the food and didn't look happy. I would not recommend it at all. The tacos were not good at all. I had fish taco which was not fresh. All their raw meat and food was outside the freezer which didn't look hygienic. It was literally on the open air.
This place was in a great area and I loved the relaxing environment. However, both the margaritas and tacos were horrible. The chicken tacos were flavorless with no seasoning and difficult to eat.
I’m a local I stopped in for quick drink. It was $14.50 for a rum and Coke. Absolute joke Foods always been over priced here and nothing to write home about in terms of quality. Really don’t bother there’s restaurants and bars within feet that coast literally half the price
I had 3 shrimp tacos on Friday at 2pm here at Pete's and by 7 30pm that night, was throwing up and with stomach flu for 6 hours. Eat here at your own risk, I NEVER will again. The prices for the food are a joke! So expensive for the worst food ever. How is this place open?? This place belongs in downtown Tijuana. I would have drinks with Bill Cosby, have Casey Anthony baby sit my daughter or have a home cooked meal from Jeffrey Dahmer before ever eating here again. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
They said my card had not gone through, found out later I got charged twice for a total of $90. Should have been $45. Beware!
The lady owner was so rude. She forgot to write down part of our order, yelled at me in front of the other diners, and refused to give me anything unless I came to pay extra from what I paid. Tacos had ZERO flavor. Needs tons of seasoning and some limes. Soda was 5.99. Would never come back here, way better tacos with kinder workers in other parts of the island. This place wasn’t not good at all.
Very rude to the point of chewing me out (his English was difficult to understand) when I calmly stood in line twice, after 2 groups of 2 people and one group of 3 people had ordered after me and been served, to ask if he was still working on my single taco. Very weird and unpleasant experience. Even just an acknowledgment that he had forgotten instead of his tirade would have been good. I recommend avoiding this place.
