Mr. Rick's Avila Beach Reviews
What a great find. I have not been in Avilla in years. Always a sleepy little town. I was surprised to find a great restaurant, great weather, and a lot of tourism. The restaurant is very limited with services. You walk up, order, and then try to find a seat. The food was good, I had the Ortega burger. We were here during the week and it was busy, so I am sure weekends will have a long wait.
We love Ashley! She's an amazing bartender!
Can't go wrong with some Mr. Rick's grub. It's fun to post up on their outside patio and have a drink while enjoying the fresh ocean air. The atmosphere is always chill and fun, good tunes and a good crew that takes care of you. Everything on their menu is tasty, go with the nachos if you can't decide, the best! This day (during COVID-19) pandemic we took our order to go and had a picnic on the beach while the sun set. Burgers are hardy and juicy with all the yummy fixin's. Fries and onion rings are high quality and delicious. They even had some yummy homemade type cookies I couldn't resist. They have a safe and conscientious set up to adhere to guidelines during the pandemic.
Food was excellent. The standouts were the best fries and clam chowder we’d ever had. The service is fast and the atmosphere is clean and inviting. They are dog friendly and even have a menu just for dogs. Our Maltipoos shared the “Marley and Meat” and loved their meals. We all agreed that Rick’s was our favorite meal of this vacation, and we will be back next time in Avila Beach.
The food at Mr Rick's is great!! We live locally and hadn't tried it, so we gave it a try yesterday. We tried the OCH burger and the French dip. Both meals were Awesome!! The burger was huge and juicy. My wife had the dip and absolutely loved it. The food was so good that we came back today, new years eve, to have lunch. We split the Fish tacos and fries, which was enough for the two of us!! They were also Awesome!! Mr Rick's is now our favorite fun spot to go to. Great atmosphere, and the staff are super friendly! See y'all soon!!
After a hike to Port San Luis.... Was able to have some food and drinks on Monday before close. Fish tacos were outstanding.... Salad and shrimp very tasty and fresh. The bar staff were very cordial and visited with us at the bar, we arrived at 830, Rick's closes at 9. Live music Friday and Saturday. Be sure to visit and support this establishment. Ron & Irina
We had an amazing time at Mr Rick’s. Sam and DJ are great staff. They were attentive, engaging, and passionate creating a fun and enjoyable time. Come have a great time at Rick’s! BTW, try the clam chowder bread bowl. Best in town!
As a single solo traveler finding places that are both safe and fun can be a challenge. The whole crew at Mr. Rick’s and the custom house make it easy to let loose and have a good time. Most recently I was served by Angie, keith, and Austin and had the best weekend visiting my favorite place. The live music and fun atmosphere make this place more memorable. Through and through a great experience highly recommend.
Drinks & food were delicious! The Jalapeño Bacon Burger had a lot of flavor without a lot of heat. The jalapeño is in a bacon jam and adds just the right touch of chile flavor. Service was good. The only negative is that table service was minimal. You pretty much have to go to the bar when you want to order something. It worked out. Atmosphere was nice. A digital juke box with a wide variety of music, 4 or 5 TVs with sporting events playing and a pool table in the back. Being right at the beach you can sit outside and listen to the waves crashing on the shore. However, if it's cool & breezy, even sitting inside near the front can be a bit chilly! 🥶
This place is a very nice place to sit and enjoy the surf and people. We like the combo fish platters. Always crispy and fresh. We bring our little dog and she brings with her a lot of attention. We've met so many nice locals dining here as well and catching a few old friends as they stroll by. We visit here almost everytime we come to Avila.
Perfect beach front bar for a beer and snacks. Food ranges from shrimp cocktail to a burger and fries and does not disappoint! The staff are very down to earth and all around great to interact with. There is a pool table in the back and a stage for the occasional live music and karaoke night. Make sure you have your ID handy as under 21 typically aren't allowed.
I haven't been here since the last time I recovered the pool table, which they no longer have, so however long ago that was. The wait at Custom House was too long and we just wanted an appetizer and drink before going back on the Bob Jones Trail. We had the street tacos which were very tasty and an 805. Simple and perfect.
Ashley is the best bartender ever! She made us amazing drinks, the food was great, and the ocean view was amazing!
Delicious clam chowder! Also have Happy Hour: M-F 3-5p & 7-8p, great bar along the boardwalk with beach view.
Such cool vibe at the outside terrace. Very subtle music so you can keep conversation going without too much trouble. Food was good: moist fish, good salad, a lot of fries as a side. Lovely place so do visit if you’re around.
Food is amazing. Service is the best. Karaoke night is just the cherry on top. Atmosphere is super fun. Staff are friendly and welcoming.
THE RIBS, the main reason I want to write this review is just say how absolutely magnificent the ribs are, not only are they perfectly cooked and seasoned, but there so much meat on the bone perfect rib! The clam chowder is really good too if you like a perfect rich flavor. Also the atmosphere is amazing and people are too, I highly recommend come here!
I ordered a couple of drinks and the Fuego burger. The drinks were good and the burger and fries were delicious. The proportions were quite large which is a big plus. As I sat back, I noticed the staff and I was pleased that their customer service was very polite and respectful. The bartender that served me was Alex, he and his coworkers were great. The atmosphere was calm and chill. I would definitely recommend this place. And I already have. If any of the employees read this, great job guys!
The upgrade is gorgeous It’s been a few years since I’ve been here but the last time it was a dive. Fun live music. Good drinks. And pet friendly!!

Generous portion of food, burger was delicious, wings good and spicy and fries plentiful. Kate, the bartender is a cheery, fun and efficient hostess! Definitely worth a stay to watch the game!
We walked in about 11am on a Sunday and the crowd followed us, be aware they have live music often. They were setting up when we got there, but had not stared when we left about an hour later.
We sat at Mr Rick's at ordered our food at the bar from the Custom House. Bartender was friendly, food was great, the sweet potato fries are the best!

Beach front location. Order at the counter, take a number and then find a seat either inside or out. We sat outside on a beautiful day and listened to the waves as we ate lunch. Clam chowder was good, but just a bit gritty. Bloody Mary was OK, not great. Eh…
Always enjoy coming here. My favorite place on the main strip of Avila Beach. The music and drinks are always good, and the food is always served quickly. It can get busy, but we are always able to find a table, eat, drink, and then play some billiards. Thank you! Be back soon, I hope! ❤️
Had lunch at Mr. Ricks at Avila Beach. Location is incredible, patio is dog friendly. They have “dog rules” on every patio table, but they are not enforced. For example, the rules say barking or biting dogs will be asked to leave, but there were a couple small dogs, a Jack Russell in particular, that lunged, nipped, and barked at other dogs, and even escaped his leash and had to be chased down by the owner inside the restaurant - with no consequences. If you have rules, enforce them. Service was great, food was so so - about what you’d expect from a restaurant with such a prime location - they don’t have to make it in the quality or price of their food. I had the salmon Caesar salad - tasty but small portions and the croutons were more like small rocks than dried bread - why do restaurants do this to croutons? My spouse had dairy and gluten-free tacos; not bad but waaay too many onions. Salsa was tasty. So - great location, great service, not bad food, pricey.
On the beach at the Avila pier (closed) so atmosphere/location is the draw here Food was average but the prices were reflective, so pretty affordable for a central coast restaurant on the water. I had the lobster roll sandwich. Not gamey. Didn't taste like it was caught yesterday but pretty good. Old Bay seasoned fries were cooked perfectly. Wife had ceviche and a salad. Both were ok. You'll spend 50 to 100 bucks in for two without alcohol. Given the spot that's reasonable in late 2024. Stop by if you're hungry and want to hear the seagulls and waves crashing against the pier.
This was my first time at Mr. Rick’s. We went with friends to listen to a local band. Band has nice area to set up and dance floor for 20-30 people. Indoor seating was all high tops. Plenty of outdoor seating. Food was good…went with my usual fare, fish tacos and they were very good. We also tried the clam chowder bread bowl which was tasty.
Located right on Avila beach. I ordered their clam chowder and bread bowl and it was not bad though tasted like it needed a little more celery. Pretty much had to go to the bar area to order. It had decent ambience.

It had been 20+ years since I last visited Mr. Ricks and this will be the last as the owners have decided to merge it with their other operation The Custom House next door. It used to be a nice little place further up the hill with a dtunning view of the bay, now it is down the beach with all the other restaurants and shops. The bar tender was cool and dug up.one of the last Mr. Ricks sweatshirts for me. Sad day.
Cool place. If I wasn’t 8m pregnant I’d love to be able to review their cocktails. Food was alright. Husband enjoyed his calamari and chips. Said it was mostly due to the dipping sauces. Western Burger needed help. Wasn’t worth the $19 IMO. Under seasoned and chewy bacon. Plate sizes were decent. Lots of fries as a side. Some tables and chairs outside. Inside is high tops and bar stools. Music. Cool vibe. Friendly staff.

Was an interesting spot, food is way overpriced for how it tastes and is presented. For $20 the food should be on an actual plate not like I’m at a cafeteria. The music was blasting and would pause and skip randomly. Overall not the best experience and too pricey for what you get.
Sun. Feb. 23rd 5pm The day that THE CUSTOM HOUSE was closed and but along with Mr. Ricks cooking and serving food outside. Walked into Mr. Ricks and sat up at the bar. Two other women sat up at the bar right next to us. Both bartenders and bar back kept walking back and forth but only serving the people that were in a "line." Neither one wanted to serve us nor did they talk and say that we needed to wait in the "lines." We even had been seated before some people in the lines. I found it rude and unprofessional. Been before and had a whole other, nice, experience. But today, We walked out!
Not as much fun as before, there's no bar anymore, no table service, no more pitchers of beer, prices really went up, no more pool table, no more Happy Hour, it's all changed, doesn't feel like a sports bar anymore, food prices really went up a lot, you have to stand in line to order and only one person taking orders.
Avoid if vegetarian. You'll be offered salad with the bacon removed, then chicken, then impossible patty at $3 additional to the already $19 basic burger. Fish taco and kids options were dry and flavorless. View and location is nice and I'm sure the drink selection is great if that's what you're after

My brother waited several minutes and was ignored by the bartender. Even though he waited patiently. I noticed everyone else was served except him. I’m glad they are open about their discrimination. I don’t like spending money where my family is not welcomed.
I've been here 6 times. Half the time they got the order wrong and one time the bartender was flat out rude to patrons. I haven't seen him so maybe they fired him. Anyhow, food is good, portions are good, location, among other positive things. It's a 4 star but I'm offsetting their 4.3 star rating.
Came out of town with friends and decided to stop here for dinner before heading home. Show up at 630 and its closing at 7 on a Saturday... so we place our order for 3 tri tips 2 mixed drinks and a soda with an order of onion rings. Came out to 100 dollars. Food came. Extremely dry no bbq sauce or anything. Order of onion rings cake with 3 small burnt onion rings. Went up to counter.to order another side of fries blonde lady was extremely rude. Very bad service and bland food for 100 dollars... Should be ashamed of the food and service that was provided..
My lobster roll was $30 and completely inedible. It was truly so terrible that I had to throw it away… that’s really telling in this economy. It was slathered in multiple sauces and the meat was imitation. It was so off putting considering the fact that I had to pay extra for the 10 french fries on the side which were the only thing I was able to consume. Would not recommend eating here. Friend ordered the burger and she was displeased by the secret sauce… she also paid extra for fries to come along with it.
