Sandovals Benicia Reviews
Just had a huge burrito and it was so great. Beans were cooked perfectly, cheese was warm and melty, and the rice was delicious. Great service too, waitress was very pleasant. Very cool retro looking, air conditioned building. Overall experience was excellent, 10/10. Hopefully I will be coming again in the future! 🙌
I had chicken enchiladas dinner and was impressed with the flavor of the first and last bites. Great service and the restaurant was busy, but service was great! Was with my wife and friends and we all will be back soon. ( Hope we get a table after this review 😃)
Very good food and friendly service...I love the super fajita steak burrito...I get mine with extra meat and extra sour cream...prices just went up but it is worth it. Update on 5/17/2024: today I used their new online ordering and the menu isn't quite the same as the in store menu but it is easy to use and place an order. The one thing I do need to mention is, I was told my order would be ready in 50 minutes and I was told I would get a text message when it was ready. But when I got to the restaurant in 30 minutes, it turned out the order was already done yet I didn't get a text until I was already home with my order almost 20 minutes after i picked it up. That's not good. No one likes cold food!!! Please fix this...
Absolutely love the fajita steak they have. One of the servers, Evan is always super kind and helpful! 10/10 wpuld recommend
Honestly I did not expect much from this little place but I was taken back by the relaxed atmosphere, great service and freakin yuuummmmm fajitas! The server said the chicken fajitas the most popular item on the menu. Fajitas are never my first choice but since they were recommended I got the steak tri tip. They were so so good! My mother got a tostada salad which she said was not great and my bff got a combo plate, she inhaled it so it must have been good. I recommend this little place, order the fajitas cuz they #1!
My family and I are very pleased as well impressed with this little Benicia restaurant we've found. Inside it's very quaint and authentic looking but even better was the quality of their food. Wonderfully made and delicious. Their staff was always there checking if there was anything you desired or needed. Finally we found a local quality Mexican restaurant. Thank you so much.
I absolutely love Sandovals! Their meats are the highest of quality and marinated to perfection! The food is absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere and people who work there as well as the owners. It is literally like family each time I visit Love this place!
One of my favorite Mexican restaurants. The steak fajitas are to die for! The staff are friendly and hard working.
The food is authentic, savory, and fresh. One of the best Mexican food places in the Bay that has the unique taste of real Mexican food. The service is exceptional. The waitress was courteous, friendly, and helpful. A smile that leaves a lasting impression. Although the interior is a bit small, there is outside comfortable seating to enjoy the wonderful Benicia weather. Definitely a place to return to on a daily basis to enjoy a nice meal alone or with a group.
CHILE VERDE ENCHILADA WAS AMAZING!!! Service was friendly & quick. I don’t think it was intentional, and the chairs all being slammed around so the floor could be swept an hour before closing was … uninviting. (That’s the kind of thing I’d expect an hour after closing to remind customers to GTFO and it had the same effect on us.)
We love to have our chicken soup. They use the best pieces of breast meat, they make it fresh to order every time. It takes a little longer but so worth it.
we walked in and was greeted with big smiles. service was genuine. menu was easy to read and well put together. food was delicious i had the fish taco that included rice and beans, my wife had the combo platter, one of our daughters had tri-tip fajitas, our other daughter had shedded chicken quesadilla and our son had the cheese quesadilla kids platter. soft drinks came in very large cups that we didn't have too ask for refills. over all we all gave casa Sandoval 👍🏼👍🏼up! come visit! you will not want to leave.
Friendly atmosphere and staff. Great food! In a lovely street. I will definitely stop by again.
Deanne and her staff are amazing they have great hospitality amazing customer service and the food is even better a first impression of Sandovals couldn't have gone any better...my husband and I came back about a year later to find out its under new management still great food, service, atmosphere and reasonably priced
Altogether great mexican. I especially love their burritos and nachos! Ask for the Jimmy Dean if you are looking for a keto or carnivore meal. Just meat and cheese! 🤤
Five out of five stars. The food is amazing, I had my girlfriends leftover burrito back in January and I had been wanting to come back ever since, it’s now May, and I just had my first experience with the restaurant itself, first off, I ordered my food to go and it was ready by the time I got there, but when I got there I noticed they had free sour patch kids in a bowl like it was Halloween, lol that was the best thing I had ever seen at a restaurant! And then there was a guy named Eric that worked there, he was so courteous and accommodating, his energy and customer service was amazing and above par, I feel like he made the overall experience the best, thanks Eric!

Delicious tacos and enchiladas. The chips before dinner always come out warm and the salsa was delicious with just enough kick! Service was good and not sure, must be the owners son who is quite good in serving us and making sure our table had what we needed
They've been making the best steak fajitas in Benicia for the last 20 years, the salsa is also amazing.
This place was popping on a Wednesday evening! The street tacos were delicious. Good portions for the price. Friendly staff and community atmosphere. The salsa that comes with the complimentary chips could use a little more flavor/spice.
Friendly staff. Comfortable dining area. Fresh, generous and tasty portions. I had Fish tacos, which were good. Came with lots of chips and salsa. Attractive presentation. Overall simple Mexican fare, and a good value for the price.

Good restaurant. Our office orders from here frequently. Chips and salsa are good. Food is fresh and served hot. Staff is friendly. They still are not doing inside dining. There are a few tables outside. The wet burrito is a good choice if you want a big meal. Their pastor is delicious.
Hubby and I came here on a Thursday night around 530, there were still a few tables available in the small dining room. Server came over quickly with chips/salsa and took our drink order. The food took a little longer than anticipated, but it was so delicious we didn't even mind. It definitely satisfies that craving for Mexican food!
I really enjoyed lunch here. The default salsa is pretty good, but the warm green sauce is even better. Enjoyed the Chile Verde, it's almost as good as my own! Service was great and everyone was very friendly. Glad we tried this place, will definitely return for more.
The food here is very flavorful and fulfilling. They use good quality ingredients and prepare them very well. I particularly enjoy the amazing beef fajita meat. Primary issue for deducting a star is that the service can be somewhat inconsistent depending on time you go in. I don't recommend dining in within 30 minutes of closing as my family (on more than 1 occasion) has literally had to lift our feet as eager to go home employees start to "close" before business hours are actually over. I don't particularly enjoy the smell of mop water while I finish my dinner.
I usually have the fajitas and they are amazing. The way they marinade the meat is delicious. The chips and salsa are good. The service can be a little slow. The waiting staff need to learn to work together so the customers are not neglected. They are not unfriendly or unprofessional, just slow. I would recommend it if you are patient about getting your order in.
We ate there last night and the service was awful . It wasn't busy and there's a lot of folks working there . I ordered beef enchiladas with red sauce and got a real HOT green sauce . The servers are really young and not so Professional they may need some training. It's inexpensive and the food is always tasty ...
The service was unacceptably slow. It took almost 20 minutes to place our order and after almost an hour of waiting for our food, I asked the waitress if we could just get it to go because it was getting late and I needed to get my 4 year old to bed. After another 25 minutes our food was ready to go. I'm giving this 3 stars only because the food was actually very good.
When I first walked in there was a strong smell of pork . I ordered a vegetarian burrito to go. It arrived fairly quickly. When I ate it, it was very good. The portion was enough and filling. I compare all my Mexican food to El Faro. This isn't El Faro but will do since its closer to me.
I live 5 minute walk, I love supporting local businesses, today I order 2 Flautas Chicken and Carnitas, both no flavor, should have driven to Fairfield Chevys, very disappointing, DeAnna please come back and retrain the cook.
Food was okay not very flavorful and not a lot of variety.
Nice location and decor although the music was a bit loud for my taste during a 5:30 p.m. dinner. Had I been 20 years younger when drinks were more important than the food, I would have enjoyed the vibe a bit more. The complementary chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants are usually a pretty good indicator of what the food will be like. Unfortunately, this salsa was pretty flavorless with no spice at all. It is definitely not fire roasted. I had the 3 item combination with a ground beef crispy taco, ground beef enchilada in green sauce, and a chile relleno. The relleno was the best of the 3. The taco was mostly shell with very little filling. The enchilada sauce was good, but the tortilla on the enchilada was very tough and hard to cut. Prices were reasonable for downtown Benicia, but it's definitely not the best Mexican food in the area.

Very tasty, cheesy food. Service was good. I think they have some solid chefs/ cooks. Chile relleno, enchilada we're on point in the guacamole was very good and fresh. I'll definitely go back when I don't feel like driving to Tacos Jalisco in Vallejo. Slightly pricey that's 1st Street for ya lol.

I've been coming to Sandavols as long as I can remember. Their food has always been good, and when Deanna was working the service fantastic. We came here tonight with these expectations. We were sadly let down. We were able to sit right away, but had to wait a while to get the menus, after not being greeted at all when we walked in. Once our waitress came and brought us chips/salsa/menus, our drink order was taken and brought quickly. The food took FOREVER. Like 30 min forever. With nobody checking in with us once. And after the food was delivered? Not one visit from our waitress to check on us. Matter of fact, we had to go to her to ask for the bill because she was so busy talking to the other waitress behind the bar. Food was good, which is the only reason they got 2 stars. But their service was terrible. I don't have crazy high expectations for restaurants, but this one failed to even meet the lowest of expectations. Too bad. Probably won't be back.
Terrible. To be honest don’t waste your time, eat at Taco Bell it’s better than this. Meat wasn’t savory neither the chicken nor the steak. It was sweet as if they used BBQ rub to season it. Definitely not authentic tasting. So bad i would give it a 1 but my wife said her taco salad wasn’t BAD but it wasn’t good. What a waste of money. They also told me there was going to be guac and sour cream included but there was none. I could go on and on about my experience but ill leave it where it stands. Very bad.
I used to love this place. However, the last few times I have been here, the food has been average at best. In particular, the last time I was here, I ordered a Chili Verde burrito. It was full of rice and beans but had about 3-4 pieces of pork and one was all fat. I think I will start looking for another place for Mexican food.
Great service, friendly people and atmosphere but burritos were quite bad. Not very authentic and chewy chicken. Wish it was better because I love to support restaurants downtown but this was not good Mexican.
Friday night service, we arrived, were sat and waited 30 minutes before we were given menus, another 30 minutes before we could order, 20 minutes for drinks and 45 minutes for food. We didn't get out food until almost 9pm. We all got different items. The ground beef was too salty to eat and the taco salad shell was greasy and hollow like puff pastry. Inedible. We won't be back.
Definitely not Mexican Food, jalapeno poppers, nothing expectacular, guacamole lots of tomato, Chile verde, very spicy, refried black beans no flavor, for a Mexican restaurant no horchata or aguas frescas, only sodas. Food Needs better presentation.

I ordered just a cheese quesadilla only, no meat. Told me it was $14.00, was told it was big. It was not big but gave me a big bag of chips with salsa, sour cream and guacamole which I really didn't want. Not worth it, salsa was bland. I felt I was way over charged for what I ordered.

First-time experience. We received terrible service and terrible food. Ordered tacos and fajitas, and neither dish had any flavor. It was very overpriced for 2 dishes with no flavor, including old rice and beans. Staff was too busy eating and talking amongst each other instead of helping the customers. Do not recommend.
Loud inside. I came in to order food to go. I sat at the counter order to wait for my order. Within 10 minutes the server who took my order (and I paid in full at time of order) came out Togo food and placed in the side counter. I had a feeling it was mine, however I did think 10 minutes was fast and I TRUSTED she would have given to me, she did not. 15 more minutes pass when a guy server asks me I’d I here to pick up? I said “yes, and told him my name”. He went to look at that order that has been sitting there (and I have been looking at it) grabs it & asks if I need napkins. Ugh. I took my cold food & left.. it was awful.. I’ll never go back..it’s overpriced as well. $21. For basic TV dinner .. terrible
The food has gone so down hill. We just can't get excited anymore. Either it takes 20 min to get them to answer the phone to place a to go order or they mess up the order. Almost trying to force you to use the online order app. (Which costs more) I used to go there all the time. I wish they could pull it together. I order a simple bean and rice burrito. I have explained I cant have the dairy. It is not good when I bite into the melted cheese. They get it wrong most of the time. Im over this place I ate here 2-3 times a week for 3 1/2 years. Never again Damn it. So few food choices in Benicia Please sell the place! Mr. Sandoval would be disappointed. I sure am. Last insult They refuse to refund your money when they scree up. That friendly person who takes your order has NO accountability or professionalism when they cant take an order correctly. Ex- Loyal Customer
Phone has been busy (not unanswered, but busy signal) for over 20 min and online ordering is closed. Last few times I’ve ate in, it’s been mostly young kids running the show and doing minimal work, getting annoyed. Makes me think they are disconnecting these on purpose. Too bad as I wanted to order takeout and still like the restaurant. You need some stronger employees if you want to compete with other business in town. Fix it and assure me it’s fixed, then I’ll happily remove the review as I know how important these are and I’m still a supporter. In the meantime, guess I’ll have to take my business across the street to Elviaritas or Chico’s.
My order was overlooked and I was never served. I will not be returning and just stay with Elviaritas instead. This was my second time giving them a chance and it was regretted. Looking at other reviews on here it seems the same waitress has delayed many orders or just ignores customers, can't see how a business can operate this way.
New management has really taken this place downhill. The wait times are ridiculous now—expect to be on hold forever if you try calling. Customer support is disorganized and unhelpful, which is a shame because the food is still great and the cooks are genuinely kind. The people in the kitchen are keeping this place afloat, but the front-end experience is frustrating at best. They don’t even play Mexican music anymore.
The authenticity of this place was amazing. Just the right amount of bland so that I felt I was at a retirement home in Florida. Lol. We were seated at 5pm on "Cinco de Mayo." Well aware this could cause an increase in service time, but totally unprepared for the poor experience we had at this restaurant. It took an hour (!) for 3 burritos to come out! Now the wait would have been forgivable if the food actually tasted good. I've lived in California my entire life, and I eat Mexican food all the time. I'm not kidding when I say a Del Taco Burrito would have tasted better! Burritos were $20 each which should mean extra deliciousness. Don't count on seeing any Mexican people eating here. No self-respecting Mexican would eat here twice. In fact, I feel a little less Mexican since eating here. Pros: Cute ambiance, friendly staff, location. Cons: poor service/ management and TERRIBLE food.
Google says they are open until 9pm - I showed up at 8:11pm and they told me take out only, even though there were two other people eating in the restaurant. If you are not closing early, and have clearly advertised that you are open until 9pm, why have I been refused service? I was looking forward to trying the food here, but now there is no change in hell I'll be giving them any of my money.
I have been a regular customer for years. They over charged my credit card the last time I went there by more than eight dollars. I figured simple mistake. But after I showed them my bill and the charges . They took a picture of my bank statement. They took my phone number and said I would get a call. I am still waiting. There has been no response from owner, and I will not go back until I get one. Very poor customer service.
Horrible customer service so we simply left! They are open until 9pm and at 8:37pm my husband and I were greeted with frowns! The waitress knew one of the customers and was friendly to her but rolled her eyes at us! We will not come back! We went to Elviarita’s Cantina up the street and had bomb tocos, drinks, and nachos! I wish more ppl understood how customer service works! 10/7/25 If you’re black or brown go to Elviaritas’s Cantina they’re not racist!!!
Can't tell you anything about the food here's why, and it seems we're not the first to complain about this. Came in at 8pm after planning to come here for a week to celebrate a special occasion. Seems their 9pm closing time listed on their website is just a suggestion as we were rudely told by the young blonde girl when asked if they were supposed to be open until 9pm and she quipped, "tonight we aren't" as we watched 2 couples that had just gotten their food eating in the restaurant. You get one chance in this industry and you just lost 2 new benecia residents that won't ever be coming back. Too many great Mexican places I'm this area ti be treating customers like that.
