Belmo cafe Berkeley Reviews
A wonderful treat every visit ❤️ Belmo Cafe’s brioche is a must treat of all times ~ my mom who lives quite a distance always ask for their delicious freshly baked brioche - hope it will be available more. Also, at a work retreat folks immensely enjoyed Belmo Cafe’s turkish delight! We love trying new items each visit but the honey cake (sorry i do not know what it is called) paired really well with a cup of fresh black hot coffee. A total delight Belmo Cafe is. Mercí. Looking forward to next visit with the most friendly cafe workers, worth the travel despite high gas prices 🫶🏾
I promise the person behind the counter that I would only eat half and they held me accountable by telling me to put a picture of my half eaten cheesecake lol I love coming here and they always have so many choices it overwhelms me and then I get help with what I should get. The cheesecake was 4 out of 5. I really wished I could have tasted more pistachio dot but overall it was very fluffy.
This place has so many treats to choose from I just couldn’t decide! Pooped in for a quick croissant sandwich, sugar cookie, and coffee. Service was fast and straightforward and we were able to sit and eat on the sidewalk bistro tables. Will be back again to try the Algerian sandwiches and any of their other tasty treats.
Growing up in this neighborhood for a few years in my young life, I'm always happy to see a new business with something good on the Westside. I actually caught this place out of the corner of my eye, expecting a Middle Eastern restaurant that was there before, and when I saw the words French and Algerian bakery. I practically slammed on my brakes turning around to check it out. Man was I ever glad that I did this. A lot of people, especially students in this town, Don't really know what a real baker is, or the kind of things they create until they taste it and are blown away. I walked in here, noting a cafe tables outside on University avenue, and met the proprietor, Nadir, a master baker from Algeria. When you walk into the place, on the left are more of the French classical treats, and on the right are the Algerian and Turkish pastries, which are simply mind-blowing and amazing. Add to that, the staff is super friendly, all the baked goods are made there daily, there are chairs and seats outside, and to top it all off they make espresso drinks, as well as drip coffee. I think this is the spot that I was waiting for. I'm going to tell everybody that this is the spot to go for baked sweets, and I believe Nadir also does custom orders for people upon request. When you want to treat yourself to something truly special in West Berkeley, and love real, masterfully baked old school pastries, this is the spot to go. Say hi to Nadir!
The pastries from here are IMMACULATE! The pastries are so good, especially the croissant! It was so flakey, buttery and delicious with a sweet filling inside. The custard tarts I bought were amazing as well. Highly recommend getting the raspberry custard tart. The employees were friendly and attentive! Will definitely return!
Absolutely delightful! The counter folks could not have been nicer. So many options in the case, so beautifully arranged and decorated, made choosing really hard. Dining is outside only, but we had no problem getting a table for 3 on a Sunday morning. Totally savored my palmier and biscotti with a latte. Delighted to be served an almond/honey cake sample that was indescribably wonderful. I really appreciate a place that realizes that hospitality is as important as the food - and this place knocks both out of the park!
This little bakery might look quite misleading, but what they have is great and very tasty. Unfortunately, they were out of Turkish and Arabic coffee when I came late afternoon, but Turkish delight was top quality. The regular coffee was also very good. Highly recommend this place
Belmo Café is amazing! The coffee is rich, smooth, and perfectly balanced you can really taste the quality. The pastries are fresh and delicious, especially the Algerian and French ones. The staff are super friendly and the place has a cozy, welcoming vibe. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Berkeley for coffee and sweets!
This place is a hidden jem and wonderful world of sweets, pasteries, coffee and sandwiches. I can't imagine going to Berkeley or the Marina without stopping here. This is a real 5 star flavor experience. Its only a one person show so relax and be patient for the crafting of a wonderful eating experience. Its a French dessert/bakery with a little taste of Algerian. The croissants are exquisitely crispy and the chocolate/almond was not too sweet but that perfect blend of flavor, crunch and creaminess. The latte was not focused on Instagram highlights but was made with the finest smoothest flavor that was creamy and rich. A perfect complement to the croissants. I took a peach pastery and almond chocolate croissant to go. Dreaming of the next time I go what will I try....I have my eye on the Algerian Baklava. What will you try?
Please visit Belmo on University! Surprised to walk in on university and find a master pastry chef displaying fine french pastry. So much more than cakes and pies. Individual desert creations that are expertly crafted and skillfully decorated. Seriously, treat yourself, family, or friends to a selection of Belmo pastry today! I had to follow up with a visit to meet the chef, Nadir. He stated his pastries reflect his career of 10 years in Algeria, 8 in London, and a year and a half in Paris. I tried a small chocolate mousse and I have to say Amazing quality chocolate and texture. Thx, Belmo!
This is my first time visiting Belmo Cafe in Berkeley California. The cafe is a exquisite taste of Algerians and French baked pastries. They also serve the finest coffees and beverages. Belmo Cafe is a hidden gem close to UC Berkeley. The owner and staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their pastries. I felt like I traveled to France and Algeria and I never left Berkeley. You can taste the best quality of the ingredients of each origin country. I highly recommend that you visit this epic Cafe. This will be my favorite stop everytime I visit Berkeley California.
Belmo Café – A Rare Bakery Gem Worth the Journey At last—we’ve found a truly exceptional bakery. Belmo Café is an absolute treasure, offering baklava of every kind imaginable, each one crafted to perfection with delicate layers, balanced sweetness, and rich, authentic flavor. Beyond the baklava, their specialty French and Algerian pastries are nothing short of extraordinary. Every item reflects skill, tradition, and care—these are not everyday desserts, but culinary gems you savor slowly and remember long after. This is the kind of place that’s worth any trip, no matter the distance. If you appreciate genuine craftsmanship, refined flavors, and pastries made the right way, Belmo Café delivers on every level. I highly recommend giving them a try—you’ll quickly understand why this bakery stands in a class of its own.
I've been going here since they opened, and it's hands-down my favorite bakery in the bay. Every pasty and cake is so beautiful and flavorful! I enjoy visiting each time because I get to try something new Chef Nadir makes that I didn't see before. The tables outside are great for enjoying your food with a nice cup of coffee in the sun. The lively customers that also frequent this place make it feel like a community each time you sit down. I wish this place nothing but success, and for everyone in the bay to become a local customer like myself.
Today we came to this small and beautiful cafe.. French and Algerian food.so delicious. We enjoyed the good food. Thank you very much guys. Special thanks the working people in this restaurant Ayoub, ameen thank you brothers you guys are doing great job 🙏🥰🥰
After picking up Coolbreeze McGee at the Alley Cat we headed to the only sandwich shop the Breeze will go to...the Belmo Café on University for some turkey and avocado sandos! Well, now I know why this is his go-to sandwich shop...that turkey avocado sando was bombtasticly delicious! 5 stars, and they didn't even try! ☆☆☆☆☆
Lovely little cafe with nice strong espresso drinks, delicious pastries, some outdoor tables. I was having a bad day and the clerk (maybe owner?) gave me a treat for free with my order. The alfajore was so good I almost cried. Definitely check this place out.
People are warm, helpful, welcoming. Pastries are terrific and a wonderful change from the same old chocolate croissant morning bun. The Turkish coffee opened my eyes on a difficult morning. Hard to spot, but don't miss it!
Belmo Cafe in Berkeley is super cozy, yet impressively they offer a little bit of everything in that tiny space. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. My sandwich came out juicy, huge, and packed with flavor. A perfect spot for a satisfying meal with great vibes!
I bought these 2 items, in the picture below, four times over in the span of a week. Incredibly delicious donuts and pumpkin -coconut bar!! The variety of items in the cafe almost feel endless
A beautiful hole in the wall. Many authentic yet simple options from sandwiches to desserts. Well done! A definite stop by on your way in and out of Berkeley for a quick bite!
Great pastries, fantastic croissant sandwich. Helpful proprietor. Sitting outside at the sidewalk tables is nice enough, it’s just this block of Berkeley that is sort of not great. The pastries make up for that though. I especially liked that the eclair was not grossly huge, and created so well that custard didn’t glop out the sides. A really perfect dessert. I look forward to going back.
A small jewel. The place itself is clean, welcoming, and the pastries are beautiful. They have gluten free option and all the food is halal. The chef is kind and Makes delicious sweets and savory sandwiches. We will definitely visit next time we are in Berkley
Belmo Café is an absolute hidden gem on University! It’s not just a Parisian-Algerian pastry shop! it’s a whole experience. From the moment you step in, you’re greeted with the aroma of fresh-baked pastries and a menu full of unique, specialty items you won’t find anywhere else. The real surprise? The liver sandwich. I know it sounds simple, but trust me, it’s heaven on a plate. Perfectly seasoned, tender, and packed with flavor. It’s an unexpected masterpiece. Orangina is a plus!
We were on our way home from dinner cruising down University and the bright lights of the bakery caught my eye, so we decided to check it out. Inside is very small, but the treats are mighty! Service was amazing. Went home with all kinds of goodies, tiramisu, pistachio cheesecake, almond cookies; and those that you won't find at a regular bakery...Turkish delights, variety of baklava, plain puff pastries, a mozzarella pie slice, plus treats from all over the world...even Africa! It's a must try if you are ever in Berkeley and in the mood for something different.
Amazing pastries and excellent customer service, wonderful variety of French and Algerian pastries, treats, coffee and teas. We will stop here every time we visit. High quality pastries! Baklava, pistachios, mousse, apple danish, almond croissant, Italian donuts, and so much more worth a visit. Splendid outdoor seating among colorful lights and displays of delicious desserts
They have SO MANY options to choose from, both french and algerian. The pastries are top notch, my favorite is the savory tomato one. The domes, eclairs, choux pastries and mousse cakes are really good too. They also have baklava and turkish delight samplers I love those. I tell everybody to come here for little sweet treats, but I’ve had a sandwich here and it’s great too. The chef/owner is super sweet, he always gives me a little treat to try.
I wish I lived close to this place and that I had the metabolism of a hummingbird because I would eat everything they have. The selection was so beautiful and was truly what they claimed to be, in that they had a magnificent collection of French pastry and also Algerian delicacies like the coconut pomegranate roll and the outstanding merguez sandwich. Also wonderful date pastry that wasn't too sweet and very filling. Outstanding hospitality and style. A real gem.
Best location in the Bay Area for Algerian merguez baguette and sweets. When I am in the area this is my to go to place to eat in Berkeley. Coffee and tea are also available, but highly recommend to get their sweets.

We were in Oakland for a weekend and we were looking for a quick bite to eat. This place came up on google and we decided to give it a try. The food was extremely delicious and the cakes were very sweet and tasty. The owner went out of his to provide with free drinks for the whole group (7). Will definitely come back to this gem 💎 again. Very recommended. Sincerely, Ali Amis
This Algerian bakery is such a gem! My favorite item is the mhadjeb - which is a savory crepe-like flatbread filled with peppers, tomatoes, and onions. So delicious. Has a kick. The owner is a kind man. There are lots of other sweets and pastries. Highly recommend!

Extraordinarily slow service. There was only one worker taking orders and one guy ahead of me in line being served and I waited over 15 minutes before leaving. I normally don’t mind a slight wait but this was pretty egregious for an otherwise welcoming bakery. I have never seen a single food order take that long. I hope to try again in the future.
We han the chicken and liver sandwiches, both of which were great, as well as sime cheesecakes and pastries. Our only disappointment was the date cookie, which was dry and relatively flavorless.
Deliciously authentic Algerian French pastries! Made fresh daily, my North African husband and I try to get out here as much as possible (we're from the Northbay). I forget all the names but we got an assortment box that we'll be enjoying for the next few days. There were cute little cafe chairs out front and while we didn't order a beverage or sandwich, it seems like a nice place to enjoy an authentic pastry or meal. Merci à Café Belmo car nous avons fait un retour rapide chez yemma pendent en mangent vos pâtisseries 🥰
Good variety for gluten free people. The majority of the sweets are made with semolina flour so they are gluten free cakes, puddings, and more. Mostly Algerian sweets. I really enjoy it there. Because their menu is constantly changing, you need to ask the owner to point out gf items to you. This sounds sketchy combined with the fact that ther s no separate gf kitchen here, but I have never been glutened here. If you are celiac and extremely strict about cross contamination, I would not risk it at Belmo.
Their sandwiches are really dry but the other bakery items are good. We got the Marinated Grilled Chicken sandwich and its more some pieces of chicken with a pound of potatoes in it, plus we needed a drink with every bite since its so dry. Sharing pictures after separating some potatoes from the sandwich.
Honestly, I went to try this place based on the reviews, however I was greatly disappointed. I ordered pistachio latte and iced cappuccino in the drinks. And two basic desserts on the sides. The desserts were decent but the drinks was complete disaster. Pistachios latte just felt like water, it had no coffee or the pistachio flavor at all.

Inattentive service. Had one guy help me out then leave and ignore me, then another guy left mid order and came back 3 minutes later. Secondly, the pastries are overpriced and store bought. The pistachio cake taste like regular store bought cheesecake, you can even tell because they got a cheesecake slice but put pistachio sauce and toppings on top and thats why the swirls got covered too. Its literally a cheesecake with pistachio on top… misleading, they said pistachio cheesecake! Embarrassing charging 7.5$ for a slice of store bought cheesecake. The little sweets are 3$ each, you can find them usually for 2$ or less, some places even sell a pound for 5 bucks. If they give refunds, please me first because i threw it all away, 13.5$ is what i spent for this little box of low quality pastry
