It is a great spot for comforting and authentic Japanese food. The udon noodles were freshly made, thick, and perfectly chewy, and the broth was light yet very flavorful. I appreciated being able to customize the bowl with different toppings, which made the experience fun and satisfying. The service was fast and well organized, even when there was a line, and the prices were reasonable for the quality and portion size. A solid choice for a quick, delicious meal if you’re craving udon in Berkeley.

Super fast cafeteria style service. Food was good though a bit salty. Add ons make it so you can make anything you'd like if a menu item isn't perfect for you.

Already a regular here. They're known for their noodles, which are great. But my absolute favorite of all time is the katsu curry rice. Good pricing, quality, and service.

Now that I’m done with UC Berkeley, I can confidently claim that this has always been a very tasty ramen restaurant. I would go here whenever I had in-person campus visits. The thick vegan noodles with carrots, broth, and cabbage are very delicious.

A transcendent noodle experience at Marugame Udon… I don’t usually use the phrase “life-changing” to describe a bowl of noodles… but here we are. From the moment you step inside Marugame Udon Berkeley, it’s like being transported into a cozy, bustling noodle haven where deliciousness practically hangs in the air like perfume. We got the Curry Nikutama and the Vegan tan tan and if comfort and joy had a baby, it would taste exactly like this. The beef in the curry nikutama was melt-in-your-mouth tender, the broth a silky, golden ocean of rich curry perfection. The silky egg sat on top like a jewel, slowly swirling into the noodles, creating a sauce so luscious it should be illegal. Every bite felt like a warm hug from a very talented chef. Whoever invented the vegan tan tan deserves a medal. A vegan dish that somehow manages to be creamy, spicy, nutty, and deeply flavorful all at once? Sorcery. The noodles had the perfect chew the kind that makes you involuntarily close your eyes after the first bite. Toppings? Crisp, fresh, and beautifully balanced. Portions? Generous enough to make your future self thank you. Ambiance? Casual but immaculate, with that satisfying clatter of trays and chopsticks that lets you know everyone’s eating well. If I could, I’d build a small shrine to this place in my kitchen. If Marugame ever shuts down (god forbid), I’ll personally chain myself to the door and protest.

Efficient, clean restaurant. Staff are all really helpful from start to finish and the food was delicious as usual!

Great food at affordable prices! Finally something I can comfortably afford on my broke student budget 😅 The place is clean and spacious and although everything is self serve, the staff behind the counter is friendly and humourous.

My usuals for no frill basic authentic udon. No crazy long wait, clean (usually) and simple. Good selection of fried sides. Parking is a challenge but not impossible. Their AC needs serious work. It gets hot inside

Great place for a taste of authentic Japanese udon. Spacious inside and efficient service too. Food quality is on par (or even better) than other Marugame Udon restaurants I tried in other countries. At the time (Jan 2025) when I visited the restaurant, there was roadwork at Shattuck, so you may have to park elsewhere.

Great place for quick tasty udon that won’t break the bank. They make it in house too so it’s fresh and good, and you can choose your own add on tempura. There’s a line since they finish cooking and assemble as you order but it moves pretty steadily.

First time trying this place and loved it! We ordered the Tan Tan bowl and it was so good. It wasn’t too spicy and the flavors were spot on. The bowls run around $12 which is reasonably priced for what you get. We also tried the teriyaki chicken bowl, gyoza, matcha iced tea, and the mango soda which was also very good. Plenty of seating inside and outside. We will be back to try more!

Fresh noodles and hot tempura are the selling points of this restaurant. The udon is rolled and cut in front of you as you come in the door. The noodles are worth it and I'd definitely recommend the beef bowl over the curry (the broth is better). Meanwhile, the restaurant features many different tempura, from chicken to zucchini to pumpkin and shrimp. They are all good and there is plenty of dipping sauce to try. The drink selection is mostly tea, water, soda, and some sparkling juices.

Great udon! The fried food bar was cold and hard to eat though. The employee making our udon was so friendly, the cashier on the other hand was not and was annoyed and cranky for some reason.

Marugame is always good because I'm a huge udon fan vs ramen. Their soup/broth base is very good! The noodles were cooked perfectly and the toppings were great! The Curry rice bowl was also tasty. If you want good basic udon and curry rice at a reasonable price. This is the place to visit.

For a chain restaurant, the udon here is high quality. The noodles were big and fresh, and I liked the ability to customize your dish and your sides. The bowl was really filling and worth the price (in my opinion), I was able to finish it all. The spices they had, which I added, made the dish taste even better. Overall, I hardly have any complaints. It’s not the best udon out there, but it’s pretty great. 4/5.

We arrived for dinner at 6:15pm on Friday and the restaurant was quite busy. Fortunately, we got a street parking nearby the restaurant. The service was good and prompt. My only complaint was that they need to clean the table as it was very sticky. - Nikutama udon: the udon was perfectly cooked and chewy. The beef slices were the best! They were tender, sweet, and in good portion. The poached egg was good too to be mixed with the dish. The tempura crumble gave a crunchy texture to the dish - Chicken katsu curry: the portion was quite generous. The chicken katsu had crispy coating and tender meat. The curry sauce was just okay & nothing special. - Sides: tamago tempura & shrimp tempura were crispy and good.

Fantastic Udon Noodles ! It’s a self-service indoor dining establishment with additional items you can select. Items such as fried Tempora , fish cakes, and additional udon noodles and BBQ pork. Pretty much street parking if you can find a parking space during the weekdays. I ordered the nikutama w/beef.thought of getting the curry Nikutama instead for a second. It’s all pretty good overall, you can’t possibly pick a bad entree.

My husband and I drove 92 miles for a bowl of Udon and then to spend the day on 4th Street shopping. While the food is always delicious at any Marugame Udon, the service was lacking at this location. When I placed my order, the server put my bowl of Udon on a soaking wet with tempura flakes tray that was cleaned but "dirty" at the same time, I was turned off by that. The station where we returned our bowls after we ate our noodles needed attention as the garbage was full and the counter was full of used returned bowls.

Udon and tempura were very good! However i didn’t really like the chicken curry bowl that much. Curry had its own unique taste, which was not what I expected, and there were only 4-5 small pieces of chicken. The store was kind of loud so the workers could not understand what I was saying and I could not understand what the workers were saying as well🥲 But I liked how they made the to-go boxes and bowls outside where customers can pack on their own! I am not sure if i would come again though.

Can’t remember the last time I’ve been so disappointed in a meal. First off, the line took forever due to inefficiencies. Like all they have to do is put noodles and broth in a bowl, but somehow it took 20 minutes to do that for 5 people. I got the tonkotsu, and the pork was cold. COLD. Wow. Inedible. The broth was too fatty. We also got the dashi broth and it was decent. The noodles themselves are the only saving grace of this establishment.

The food is great. But almost every time I order online they forget to pack something. Then when I call them, they don't want to refund and want me to go back to pick up the missing item. And that is if I'm lucky to get my call answered.

This is my son's favorite place so we come here somewhat frequently.... Unfortunately he's not the one writing the review. I find their food to be mediocre, overpriced, and greasy. There is a distinct lack of vegetables unless you want to pay far too much for a cold droopy bowl of vegetables that is smaller than the one they have on display to show what you get. Despite that, we come here for a fast meal. Until tonight...... this place has exactly one job, which is to make and serve udon noodles. Tonight they ran out of noodles and said it would be 10 minutes if we wanted to wait. They did offer for us to order at the register and they would bring it out to us. After waiting for over 30 minutes, and watching them serve every other person in line... they did finally bring us our food. This is the last straw. If I could help it we won't be coming back. The tempura selection used to be a draw as well, however recently it has been very slim pickings. For the amount you pay the value is just not there unfortunately

Unfortunately, the service was disappointing. The servers didn’t seem very welcoming and had trouble communicating in English. When I asked about the shrimp, I was simply told, “Here’s what we have.” The vegetables were served cold, the boiled eggs still had shells, and the green onions weren’t cut properly. Overall, it made the experience less enjoyable. I hope the restaurant can improve its service and food quality.
