Penelope's Coffee and Tea Berkeley Reviews
Got me a sugar free hazelnut latte. It was divine. Good vibes, nice and bright colors, and very friendly/helpful staff.
Penelope’s is a great spot in Berkeley. The Lillian Latte is perfectly balanced and not too sweet. It’s easily a standout. The free-range avocado toast is fresh, flavorful, and perfectly made. High-quality ingredients, which I always appreciate. I love a great coffee, and the welcoming vibe making this place well worth a visit! If you haven’t tried it yet go. It’s pretty new to Berkeley.
I can’t stop coming back to Penelope’s! The matcha latte is perfectly perfect. I’m never switching it. And don’t skip the new sandwich, The Morning Melt: soft, thick, crispy bread with eggs your way (I got sunny side up) and ham. I’m obsessed. Tomorrow I’ll try another sandwich (just for variety they all look great😉), but the drink stays the same. Theo, the owner, is all smiles and so welcoming. I watched him greet regulars and ask about them like he’s known them for years. Such a cool, non-commercial feel. Find Penelope’s if you haven’t yet!
The morning melt was absolutely amazing as was the Lillian latte. My wife had the omelette with bacon and a mocha coffee that was delicious. We also split a waffle which was a great topping to our meal.
The space is warm and welcoming, and the service is genuinely friendly. It’s the kind of place you keep coming back to. Easily one of my go-to spots in Berkeley.
I came here for a visit over the summer and stopped at this coffee shop every morning of my trip! By my last day here I felt like a local thanks to the welcoming staff. It’s not easy to find a Freddo Espresso just anywhere, and the avocado toast was my favorite breakfast item. Can’t wait to come back and try a “womelette” !!
Stopped by today for a coffee, it's on a busy segment of Shattuck. The place seems to specialize in Greek coffee and "womelettes" (waffle omelettes). The food options look great for vegetarians, but there are not many options for vegans. Will come back to try the Greek coffee! Edit: I came back to try the iced Greek coffee, I couldn't tell much of a difference from normal iced coffee based on taste, but it was good nevertheless.
Rock solid, strong regular black brewed coffee! They have pour overs available but have dark and medium roast brewed and ready to go and they were both good. Breakfast was good but the 5 stars are for the coffee!
My experience at Penelope’s in Berkeley was truly amazing! The diverse offerings of Roasts and Lattes stood out, creating a unique and vibrant atmosphere that made the brunch experience even more enjoyable. I’d rate it a solid 10/10. Whether you're a student or a local, I highly recommend checking it out!
I'm a longtime fan of Penelope's in the city, so discovering this location closer to home was an absolute delight! First off, their coffee is phenomenal! Rich, flavorful, and far superior to Starbucks or Peet's. The atmosphere is equally impressive, offering the perfect setting to meet friends for coffee or settle in to study and work. As for the food, it never disappoints. I'm obsessed with their avo toast and Greek yogurt, and when I'm in the mood for something heartier, their omelette waffle (yes, you read that right) always hits the spot. Highly recommend! I met the owner of this spot during soft opening and he is a gem! The staff was extremely friendly and the store was spotless. I love Penelope's and equally love supporting a small business rather than big chains. Today I tried the matcha latte for the first time, WOW! I am hooked!!!
Newly opened! Very light filled with friendly staff. Plus outdoor seating too which uplifts Shattuck and downtown Berkeley. It’ll definitely be a regular stop for us!
Best coffee/diner in Berkeley hands down the staff are excited to see you in the morning and then the food is awesome and reasonable in price
A very kind girl named Italia made a tasty cup of yogurt for me

penelope’s is quite a nice establishment. i ordered the spinach womelette and it was a pretty tasty brunch meal, but a little dry compared to a regular omelette. it feels strange to me that it comes with sour cream. is that a normal thing to put on eggs? or on waffles? also got the rose matcha and it was too sweet for my taste despite asking for less sweet. it’s a pretty typical coffee shop matcha latte, but not bad!! the environment is lovely and very spacious

Nice local coffee shop in downtown Berkeley, Ca.
I was excited by the list of pourover options, and went with an Ethiopian bean that was described as having blueberry notes. Sadly, this was not at all accurate - it was overextracted and bitter with a dusty character. I've had a lot of pourover coffee, this wasn't at all what I hoped for.
The menu does not list all the ingredients. I got things I did not ask for in the food& tea. When I brought it to the ladies attention she was bothered & dismissive. I had to point to the menu & show her the ingredients listed. They also got my order wrong twice. The veggie womlette was dry & the crossiants were too & cold. This was at 9a.
The mocha greek coffee is really sour and tastes awful would not recommend

I go in randomly because I was waiting for my shift at work to start and I commuted early. There is a homeless woman and her dog in there just hanging out. Whatever I try to move on. The ladies up front are speaking Spanish so I order ONE thing of waffles in Spanish and everything good so far. I get home and see my receipt to see I was added an extra item. Idk if they're doing it to scam or just a fat fingered mistake but it's unacceptable either way.
Went for their valentine's special and we got a rose matcha and a free latte, along with their roast beef panini. Neither of us liked our drinks. The matcha was way too sweet and the latte was super watered down. The panini was okay but not worth the money. They also didn't know their own special promo and thought we had to get two promo drinks for the promotion to count but it had said to get one rose drink and get any other drink free. The location and interior are nice though.

I went into the coffee to pick up a cup of coffee. I was the only customer in the store and was waiting for my coffee and out of curiosity I asked how long is the expected wait time and I was told " coffee takes time to make". Great coffee, tasty foo but their service can be worked on. Not the first time I waited longer than usual for my order.

They should call it homeless coffee, I stopped by to get a quick breakfast and it was full of homeless people harassing the cashier and workers, one of them even tried to throw a chair at her and started spilling water all over and cussing out everyone. A customer has to step and threaten to throw him outside. I was myself harassed by a homeless lady and had to buy her coffee to leave me and the cashier alone. The place stinks really bad, I like the idea and the menu but did expect that many homeless hanging out inside. The staff looked so unconformable and fed up. Owner should look into this before someone gets hurt.
