Al's Deli & Grill Birmingham Reviews
Ive always enjoyed the food but the staff has gotten so fed up they assume everyone wants to fight even when its a question. The women on the night crew definitely have an attitude and act as though they're ready to fight you. It was embarrassing to watch. I just recommend getting your food to go
Every time I come to Al’s the food hits the same every time.Burgers juicy and grilled to perfection; Potatoes filled to the brim and jam packed with flavor. It’s a friendly diner atmosphere that I can see many nights with friends ending with all smiles
This is your quintessential late night student study hole in the wall. Open 24 hours the food is incredible and the people are very nice. I always say please and thank you as it is showing them a sign of respect for the hard work they’re doing. If I was a student here, I would hear all the time do not bypass this place just because it looks rundown. The food is incredible.
Finally got the time too stop by here and my Husband said, now these potatoes are huge. Oh My!!! I ate off my BBQ Potatoes 4 times and it was so delicious and hot. It was so big and loaded just unbelievable. This definitely will be my go too place for a potatoe. The inside is small but it's space outside, if you like outdoors.
Al's has been my college and work lunch spot for nearly ten years. They are open 24 hours a day and have a large menu of food from around the world. My favorite sandwich is their Mahi Mahi. It is flaky and tender and always fresh with just the right amount of seasoning and sauce. The workers are friendly and the store is always clean. The seating inside is limited but this is made up for by lots of seating outside on the patio. It is hard to find a food place with healthy and tasty food and Al's certainly has both.
Great place to stop in for a quick bite. Great food at a reasonable price! The burgers and fries are good, the gyros and the bakers are awesome! The bakers are baked potatoes loaded with whatever you choose! I got the gyro Baker and my daughter ordered the BBQ chicken Baker. Definitely alot for the money. Outdoor courtyard seating and indoor diner style seating. Service was fast and helpful.
Bar-B-Q Grilled Chicken Baker: 7/10 Overall, this was a bit bland and the toppings were unimpressive- Barbecue sauce was tasteless and I could hardly find the sour cream or green onions. However, once we took it home and added our own toppings (chili flakes, sour cream, green onion, red onion), it was very, very good. Don’t underestimate how huge these are - 1 order lasted us a good 6 meals! The newly renovated outdoor seating area is lovely for a cool summer evening, but we did have quite a few cockroaches crawling around between our feet in the seating next to the bushes. Parking: Free street parking within a walking distance should be relatively easy to find during the evening hours and weekends, but will likely be difficult during weekdays. This restaurant is easily walkable from the UAB campus. .
Overall it was a very pleasant experience. Food was great! The staff was great! They have seating options inside and outside. Plenty of parking around and nearby. From at least the food we ordered the servings were substantial. I didn't get a picture of my salad. I just jumped in and started eating. Great salad options!
This is a nice local diner with a large menu and a variety of choices. Fast service, clean tables and decent prices. The outdoor eating area is spacious, but inside is small with only 9 tables. Close to UAB medical facilities and school. Not much parking but an easy access location. Generous portions. I had the chicken baker (huge) and my wife had the grilled chicken special with rice, salad and hummus. Delicious meal.
Very good authentic food! Calling is the only reason I gave this restaurant a four star. They're very busy and can only answer phone when they have a chance. If it's a call-in order, please make sure to get in line when picking up. I've seen food go in the garbage for breaking in line. Very good people, very good food.
If its 1am and you're trashed the food is fantastic. If you're sober and there for lunch, it's subpar. There is definitely issues with communication. I asked questions with little to no response. I stated clearly what I wanted but was not given the correct item. It is a Birmingham staple. Check it out and make your own decision.
Nowhere near the quality this place use to provide a couple years back. Employees arguing with each other as soon as the store opens, my "dine in" order was treated as a "to-go" order. My food ended up getting cold cause i was waiting for it to be brought to my table. Didnt have fries or cheese available on opening... this will be the last time I eat here.
This place is nothing like you remember it in college. It is so disgusting and dirty. Overstaffed but no one was working. They were not busy at all and after 30 minutes I asked for a refund because I still didn't have my food and my friend had already finished hers. Don't waste your time or money
I asked for a large baked potato and the cashier kept telling me that they didn’t sell that and when I pointed at it on the menu she just “oh ok” and had an attitude the whole time. She tried charging me for 2 and got irritated when I told her to please fix it. She was also rude to other customers for no reason. I do not recommend
Doors standing wide open to walk in & be told they’re not open yet, guy/owner behind the grill was rude. Restaurant has went downhill compared to the early 2000’s. From now on I’ll definitely take my business elsewhere such as the Purple Onion for such as a gyro even if I have to go 15 more minutes down the road
I’m writing this with deep consternation. I have visited Al’s numerous times before this and never had issues with my order. To being with I ordered a BBQ Baker with extra sour cream. I didn’t receive any sour cream which I paid to have. To top it off there was an extremely long piece of hair in my food. There is no way they could not have seen this before closing the plate.
I placed a delivery order on Al’s Deli website to have delivered by DoorDash. I ordered a BLT which includes bacon, lettuce and tomato. I received two pieces of toasted bread with 7 short pieces of rubbery turkey bacon between them and nothing else. A picture is attached. I had to call multiple times before anyone would even answer the phone. When they did answer, they told me to try to get a refund from DoorDash even though the order was placed on the restaurant’s website. They told me to call back if DoorDash wouldn’t give a refund or I could come to the restaurant in the next few days and they would give me a free sandwich. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
This used to be one of the best places to eat. Now it is not. We came in at 11:00 opening after being at the hospital since 5:30 am. starving. And we were given fries that were not even cooked all the way. I am extremely disappointed in Al’s quality. And it ruined it for me. I will probably never eat here again. Miss the old owners.
