Chess Club Cafe Blanco Reviews
We had such an enjoyable meal. Three of us ordered the Surf and Turf. The filet was cooked perfectly medium rare with just the right seasonings. The shrimp were delicious, tender and not overcooked at all. Ambiance was lovely with impeccable service. We make an annual trip to Blanco and already plan to come to Chess Club Steak House next year, if not before. Thank you for a delightful time.
People should be comings from all over the state to eat at this establishment. Our beautiful female server was kind, informative and patient with us. Crab cakes, and the steak special were out of sight, and fairly priced. Chocolate cake was large enough for 4 to share, and delish. The wine was perfect. My family ate at Ruth Chris a week before, and this steak was SO MUCH better. Top notch, Bravo to the owner and staff!
Great food! Great Texas wines. My wife and I shared a house salad which was quite big and delicious. She ordered the halibut and I ordered the fried shrimp. We were both very happy with our meals. The halibut was not overcooked like most places overcooked fish which we were really grateful for. Chef Steve and host Emily and their entire staff are fantastic! They also have Texas wines. We ordered the Mourvedre from William Chris which we highly recommend.
Best breakfast on 281 between San Antone and Lampasas. Food 5⭐️s I had Chess Club Bfast...Eggs, home fries, sausage, toast. The toast was homemade half white, half wheat, eggs done perfectly over easy. Can you screw up OE eggs....yes by overlooking. Not at Chess Club. Home fries were done fine. Sausage not your outta the box restaurant sausage. Wife had a bacon omelette....she said was perfect. Service 5⭐️s Service was spot on....we were there on a Wed AM, and they were not real busy. But the waiter kept checking on us. The "staff" was joking....very friendly crew. Bakery 5⭐️s .....Wow. Cinnamon rolls, Dinner plate size Snickerdoodle cookies. Atmosphere 5⭐️s. Dine inside an old house or outside on picnic (and other ) options. Eclectic comes to mind. The Chess Club Cafe gets 10⭐️s on the price to value equation. Given the quality and VOLUME of food PLUS their prices have NOT recieved the now normal BIDENFLATION UPTICK. If you are needing some sustenance and are running up or down 281...or for that matter anywhere near Blanco Chess Club has the best food for your $. Guuuud Vittles.
I cannot stress enough how amazing the chicken fried steak is.. it's not gummy, it's tender and crispy and probably the best chicken fried steak I have ever had. The sides were just as good as the chicken fried steak. The bread and butter I'm pretty sure were homemade, the gravy was delicious and the potatoes were amazing. The French toast was also delicious! The service was fast. They originally told us it would be a 30 min wait but it was only 15 min. The food also came out fast. The building may be on the smaller side but it doesn't matter cause they have seating outside and seating inside. Highly recommend coming here with your family, and friends. Or if you're just driving through Blanco Texas
Best place to eat here so far! We had breakfast here on our last day. Large portions and the food was delicious. I had bacon eggs over medium, potatoes (home fries) and toast. The BREAD is homemade and so very good. Our waitress/cashier was very sweet and answered my questions about the history of the place. We’re definitely coming here for lunch next time we come to Blanco TX. P.S. I started eating before I thought of taking a photo because it looked so good.
My husband and I stopped here for brunch and oh my goodness! This place is a gem. From the outside it doesn’t look flashy or grand but it had lots of cars parked on its lot. The host was quick to set the wait time (as people were lined up) and asked if the customer has a preferred table. We just stated first available table. The place is like an old home converted into a restaurant. There is a homey feeling. The pastries look so beautiful and appetizing in their displays. Chess Club has a simple straightforward menu which makes you want to order everything! Hubby ordered the eggs benedict with syag sage and home style potatoes while I ordered the chicken (tenders) and waffles with a side of egg and bacon. When I had a bite of that chicken and waffles, seems like it’s my birthday. It was just so delicious! The serving was just right for the price. They place was not pricey, our server was wonderful, we didn’t wait long for the food to be served, the food was perfectly cooked. It is for this reason that I am giving this place a 5-star rating. And if you are in Blanco TX, definitely stop by Chess Club Cafe.
Donna was our server and she was sooooo sweet! The food was incredible but the SERVICE was out of this world and that makes all the difference. We started with the biscuits and gravy, our friends had waffles, chicken & waffles, and an omelet. They all loved their dishes. There was a wait so try to show up a little early to put your name down. They don’t take phone reservations. It is worth the wait. They have awards for being the best in the area… I believe it. This is a stop you should make if your in the area.
My wife and I agree that this was the best restaurant breakfast we have ever had! I don’t normally leave reviews but this place deserves it. I got the cowboy breakfast and the chicken fried steak was the best. My wife got the creole omelet with shrimp—delicious! If we are ever in the area again, we WILL be coming back!
We stopped by this cute Cafe on a recommendation and we are glad we did. The meat lover's quiche is meaty cheesy goodness! My husband ordered the pork special and it was a pork chop on top of mashed potatoes smothered in a delicious mushroom gravy. I hear their breakfast is really delicious too. Since we went after 11:30, we had to order from the lunch menu. That just means we have to stop on again.
Well we finally stopped in. After driving by numerous times finally went in for breakfast. Friendly staff and really a nice variety of choices. The cowboy breakfast or chicken fried steak was really good nice portion Size. The chorizo omelet was a special and really good too. The homemade bread slices thick and great taste. Parking is at a premium get there early. We think we found our go to place. Cant wait to come back for the lunch menu. Stopped back in for lunch Feb 2019, made it just in time before they closed for the day. They were friendly just like last time .the sandwiches on the homemade bread was fantastic and no skimping. The chicken fried steak was great too. Another big win.
Stopped in while passing through Blanco, Texas on 281. Keep hearing about how good it is, so of course the intrigue got the best of us. I was wanting a traditional eggs and meat breakfast, but our server said the Chicken Fried Steak was “Award Winning”…….so I HAD to try it!! Lol. I added a Blueberry Pancake as well. He did also said we should try a sample of everything to see how good it all is. My wife got the Chess Club Breakfast plate and added French Toast. Chicken Fried Steak Plate 7/10 - the homemade gravy was the star here. The CFS was good, but not the best. It did have a good breading but could have been cooked slightly longer as it had no crispness to it. The seasoning was lacking a little as well. It was a slightly thicker cut of meat and tender, so that was a plus. The gravy had a great flavor profile just like my family makes. The eggs and bacon were done up right and enjoyable. The potatoes were very good. Blueberry Pancake 7/10 - light and fluffy with just enough density to make it hearty. The blueberries were plentiful but not overwhelming. Chess Club Breakfast Plate 8/10 - the eggs were supposed to be over medium (yellow runny but the white cooked) and they were a little overdone. The flavor was still good though. The sausage patties tasted fresh and flavorful. French Toast 5/10 - thick bread but not much flavor. Maybe more cinnamon needed? The syrup was cold not warm. Service 9/10 - the entire staff was extremely attentive, friendly and helpful. Kudos y’all. Atmosphere 8/10 - nice cozy, country cafe in a quaint little Hill Country town. Overall 8/10 - definitely suggest this place. Everyone that told us about the Chess Club Cafe was spot on.
This restaurant has been here for a looong time and it’s well known by locals. The first thing you’ll notice as soon as you get in is all the homemade pastries they offer. The pudding bread is pretty good. Honestly the food looks amazing and my friend told me the omelets anda pancakes are the best!! She’s being coming here for over 5 years Unfortunately they don’t offer vegan options or many vegetarian ones. You need to create them when you order. Also, when they provide syrup they come is plastic little packages. That sucks. The staff is very friendly and the place is clean.
Really Good Food! Comfort food. The menu has a bunch of good home cooking style entrees. The chicken fried steak was top notch and the sweet tea was also. Visited on a Saturday just after noon and they were very busy, so service was spotty. Not a problem though as the food was very good and they were giving a good effort to service everyone. Great Harley ride stop for Lunch and a great people watching spot – the patrons were fun to watch and everyone of them seemed to be locals. Will recommend and will visit again to try other menu options. Sit outside but be prepared to be there for an hour or more – again the wait is worth it because the food is good. Look for the chickens in the yard.
Finally got a chance to eat here! First of all, there is NO CHESS! ☹️This was a major bummer. Here are the pros & cons I collected: Pros: Nice people/atmosphere, great food, reasonable prices Cons: No French fries, terrible corn chips, no chess Unfortunately my family and I won’t be coming back because we love French fries with our sandwiches. I could have given it a pass if they gave us homemade potato chips but they gave us those crushed tostadas that come in 20lb bags for $5. The salsa was good though.
