The Bean Broadway Reviews
It is the spot when you need a chill area for coffee and your laptop or linkin up with friends. I am so happy that management has done an amazing job with their staff and expectations. I can't recommend this place enough. I always bring all my friends visiting out of town.
I loved the coffee! So flavorful and though it was expensive, not unreasonable for NYC. I also found the staff to be very nice and they filled up my water for me. 10/10 would go again.
Elliot is the best barista in NYC! Great at giving recommendations and always knows the bathroom code!
Great spot for coffee, studying, or getting a snack. They are a little on the specialty/pricey side for a student or person on a budget, but they have a wonderful selection of food (quiche, baked goods, etc) and drinks (coffee, kombucha on tap, etc). The seating is limited but if you can get a seat, you'll either be at a quaint round table for 2, or sitting near floor to ceiling windows lined with cushions and tables. I love coming here with a book or work to do.
The best coffee I had while on my vacation in New York! All of the baristas I encountered were lovely and helpful when I couldn’t read the menu because I didn’t have my glasses! There are multiple locations around Manhattan making it super convenient while walking around and exploring.
One of my favorite coffee shops in the city. The regular coffee and the specialty drinks are well made and priced. It can get a bit crowded at times and there are only benches outside to sit on, so prepare to be a seat vulture.
A hip coffee joint selling breakfast foods and some interesting bowl of what looks like a smoothie that they sell for $10.50. The staff is super friendly and the music is amazing. The refrigerator in the corner makes a loud sound, so between that and the music it can get a little loud. There are lot of outlets near the windows and some comfortable seating. The crowd they cater to are a lot of students and young professionals. All the prices have tax included in them, which makes them cheaper than Starbucks. Bring some headphones and you can get a lot of work done. I hope this post helps!
Best ice coffee I ever had :D I love the decor and sharing tables too. Edit: I've tried the Smartwich there. A MA ZING!!! Chef is the nicest guy and so obviously proud of every one he makes. The mozzarella one is probably the best sandwich I ever had in my life. Homemade bread, mozz and fresh veggies made with love :) so yeah the Bean rules......
I ways come to get my dirty chai with oat milk and it's pretty good. To kick it up a noch, I like to get pumpkin spice syrup in it or Irish cream syrup and... It just makes my day. The staff is nice and the atmosphere is very calm and relaxing.
A very special place converging busy city life with its own, organic self that delivers exquisite vibes for your taste buds and other stimuli. Accidentally walking by is sometimes more than sufficient to realize that their moccas are the thing you were missing for a whole week without even knowing that! Definitely going back there on my next NYC trip.
This place is wonderful. When I'm in this part of town, I make sure to stop by. I always have a great time.
I used the app (Too good to go) and was greeted with a plain poppy seed bagel, an absolutely amazing almond slice pastry, and the most amazing lox bagel with butter soft salmon creamy cream cheese and thinly sliced cucumber on a plain bagel. When I say if it was legal to marry food I would marry that bagel it is 0 exaggeration. That was hands down the best bagel I've ever had and I got it on a complete whim. 100/10 recommended.
The energizer was one of the best juices I have ever had. Space is clean, but gets really warm in the sun.
It’s the coffee, it’s the staff, it’s the location, and it’s the people who choose to regularly enjoy its offerings. But it’s mostly the staff.
The best fresh juice I've had in a while ❤️ It really "rehydrated" me 😄
Go visit!! The baristas are so nice and patient!
Good atmosphere and friendly staff... polar opposite of Starbucks. The Frozen Mona Lisa is perfect for a hot day. Highly recommend.
First off Everyone who works here has always been extremely helpful and nice! They’re good, hard workers. Especially the closers and openers. People need to be nicer to these hard workers. The girl with the tattoos and glasses is very respectful, I witnessed and you’re very rude! Be nice to these hard workers, I’m a regular and they’re all very respectful.
When i have a heavy workload and want to be on campus, i love to stop by. They have a two hour time limit on the Wifi with purchase, but the barista was awesome and hooked it up for my 6-hour work day!!! Nutella Fitzgerald, hot or frozen is 🔥 I step outside for a puff and get to watch my table from where I'm at. Music is also a vibe, would love more bakery variety items though!
I come here all the time, it's a gem. The staff is so lovely and hard-working. My only qualm is that it seems most days, they're totally swamped with customers. I can't help but wonder if they can be helped out a bit more in terms of hiring more staff? Coffees and simple drinks take longer as theres only two people behind the counter.
If you're looking for delicious bagels or a nice cup of coffee, this is the place to go! I am currently studying at NYU and this is my favorite place to come do work when I don't want to be back at my dorm. All of the staff who have taken my order here are really kind and never fail to make a bad cup of coffee! They offer a large range of foods and drinks (coffee, tea, acai bowls, smoothies, bagels, etc.), all of which are mostly at a reasonable price, although some items do seem a bit more pricey. It tends to get busy on weekends and sometimes during the week, but its not super hard to find a seat. WIth your purchase you can also receive 2 hours of free wifi, which is a plus! Great place overall and my favorite cafe to sit down and do work while also drinking/eating something delicious.
Ambience was amazing, service was EXCELLENT!!! love the music played here it is always boppin. Rec. ordering their dirty iced chai it hits every time. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, especially the barista staff!!
Very pleasant staff happy to serve you. Varied background music to my liking. Alternative, rock and roll, etc. The place has a good atmosphere too. Tasty morsels such as the lemon bars and brownies. The salmon, cream cheese bagel was good. Next time I plan to try the vegan burrito or wrap.
I love the coffee at this place, and the atmosphere is chill. There is always a table to park for a while while sipping one's brew. The place is popular and sometimes one has to be prepared for a bit of a wait.
The coffee is great and there's good place to work. Wifi runs for 2 hours since you login.
This place is great. Everything is super fresh. Service isn’t the quickest but everything is made fresh which I would prefer. Great for snacks. Smoothie was insanely good
This is one of my favorite spots to read and get work done. There's plenty of seating space and natural light. The pastries are great, as are all of the drinks I've tried so far. Service can be hit or miss, depending on the time you go. There have been times when there are 20 customers in the cafe and only 1 person working. On other days, there'll be more employees than customers.
Friendly environment. People are drinking coffee and working all the time here. Hard to get a seat and always packed. The cakes and tarts are fresh especially when they first bring out the first batch. Lots of variety. Don't pick something too sweet.
Staff is friendly, fast, and helpful. The coffee is very nice, not outstanding, just good. There is never an available seat here within a reasonable amount of time. It has deterred me from ever going here to get work done, which is why I’m looking for a coffee shop a lot of the time.
This has been my go-to coffee shop in the neighborhood for the last five years. It has a nice vibe, good coffee, etc... Unfortunately, over the last few months it has started to go downhill. For years, my favorite foods to purchase at the Bean have been the muffins and the cookies. I would buy a muffin almost every day for breakfast. I bought the cookies less often, but they were incredible particularly the chocolate smores cookie. I have even brought some of these cookies to parties and they always get rave reviews. The Bean has over the last few months replaced both the cookies and the muffins with cheaper (and cheaper tasting) muffins and cookies. They are much worse and I am despondent. I have made my opinions known to staff members but no one cares. The main thing that keeps me going to The Bean now is habit and the fact that they allow dogs to come inside. At the rate things are going they will ban dogs next. Please, Bean. I love you but I am not happy with how things have been progressing recently. Bring back the old muffins and cookies.
Place to order is as soon as you walk in then there are tables around the barista area if you'd like to stay awhile. Smoothie menu is all the way on the other side of where to order if you want to see what they have.
Came in search of late night cafe to sit w/ a laptop and this fit the bill. (apparently most of NYC has a vendetta against tech at small cafes). Had 'The Fan' Acai bowl ~$12. Feels pricey but great taste, healthy, felt filling, and was made quick. Prob on par for NYC prices. Bathrooms have a code but staff will tell you. 2hr wifi limit per purchase and you get a code on your receipt. They filled up my water bottle behind the counter when I asked - nice staff!
I love the bean! Staff are really fantastic too! One thing- you’re often out of gluten free bagels! Please please restock them when you can! Thank you!
Spacious and good music. I had a good smoothie for $12. Wifi wasn't really strong enough to handle the zoom I was on, and the music was too loud for my noise cancelling headphones to drown out. So maybe not the right spot for taking a call.
I always come here to do work cause they close at 9, I like the music they play, and the chai latte is my favorite. The pastries aren’t great though you could definitely get better ones elsewhere.
Absolutely great service! Eaten was so kind, attentive and informative! Great tourist rest spot.
Great place to work and have a snack. The staff is great. Like most places in NYC, however, they'll give you take-away cups and cutlery even if you're staying in. Just get some crockery and a dishwasher. It won't hurt and you'll be contributing to a big environmental change.
I dropped by just to get a break from my usual coffee stop. The coffee is very good and the baristas were all very friendly. It's dimly lit indoors which gives it a relaxing touch. They offer an assortment of baked goods, organic smoothies & smoothie bowls, juice etc. I cant wait to try the cold brew next.
I really like studying at the Bean because I can always find a table, and their coffee, smoothies, and food are good. I really like their acai bowls and pastries. (I don't recommend their matcha or chai, though.) Things are reasonably priced, and there's a 10% student discount. They are always playing the best music. The one thing is that because they are right on Broadway, there can be some suspicious characters that stop in, but that isn't their fault. Additionally, some of the staff can be a bit rude, but you just have to be assertive. Wifi also runs out after two hours, and it can be hard to find an outlet. Despite these flaws, I think the Bean is a quirky and perfectly fine place to study.
nice spot with plenty of seating, had the Caribbean egg roll & was pleasantly surprised by how good it was!
A fun spots to go to! The food is good. I go there to get a smoothie! So so good! I also really like the employees. The main 2 employees that i mostly see working at that location is Danny and Lila! Every time I go get my smoothie, they’re always very friendly to me and so welcoming!
I came here after visiting the Strand bookstore. I got a telar drip coffee which was okay, a little too acidic for my taste. I also got a rehydrator juice which was fantastic. Staff were very friendly and efficient. The music playing was very early 2000’s emo/rock, so as a millennial, I enjoyed reading while listening to the musical selection.
It's a good corner location for Bean. It is big, plenty of seating. It's new, and it has a decent commercialized interior, not the romantic type. You can have your basic needs, seating, coffee and pastries, or simple lunch bites. The staff was friendly during my night visits. Overall I had a good experience here.
The Bean has always been my go-to place when I'm around Union Square. I think it's one of the early independents serving good coffee. I think their espresso is still good and their non-dairy lattes used to be but they changed at some point to a poor performing almond milk. They openly admit to this, so it would be nice to see them change: barista almond brands offer almost as good performance as dairy milk nowadays
I've upgraded my review to 3 stars based on really good croissants and a very amiable staff. Still wouldn't be comfortable eating in or ordering their coffee. Can't speak for their other menu items. But friendly goes a long way.
I really love this coffee place! It gets busy, so you have to snag a seat when you see it! This is the only place in NYC i ever order an iced chai from because it isn't too sweet! The only thing I dislike is how the staff don't automatically give you a receipt when you check out (the only way to access the wifi), and then I always get dirty looks when I go back to ask for it. I know they are busy, but I think since a lot of NYU students go here, you should just make a habit of handing out receipts.
Used to be my favorite coffee shop and I would regularly travel from the Bronx to come here. The coffee and food from here are excellent. They recently changed their sitting/wifi policy so that you can only stay for an hour with a purchase and use the wifi, which I don’t like. It used to be that you could buy a cup of coffee and stay as long as you liked. They are driving away loyal customers with this new policy.
Seems like a decent coffee shop but the bagels were a bit tough…
It can be cleaner to improve the experience and the food is average, though a bit overpriced. It's comfortable but depending on who is at the register, service is very 50 / 50. I had one server who was very kind and the next time, there was a different server who barely paid any attention to my questions before, during or after my purchase. I had to wave them down to get my receipt.
First time here and was considering becoming a regular. It was hotter in the coffee shop then it was outside. It was really sad watching customers walk in and immediately walk out saying it was to hot in here to buy coffee. Great environment , but management really messed up today with mine and a lot of other people's expediences by excluding something as simple as AC. idk if it was a budget issue or not, but it was really sad and poor decision making and customers suffered in the process.
I get service can be pretty slow later in the night, but it would be great if the workers could stop looking at their phones for a quick minute and take out the overflowing trash, refill the creamer container that an older lady was struggling with, and if you're going to have a complimentary water dispenser, at least refill that too. Despite that, the drinks are good and was made fast. The juices are pricey, and you can find cheaper options nearby, but not the variety that The Bean offers.
This place could not have slower service or more apathetic baristas. Hire more people to work here please!
I only come here as part of meal pal and they make me feel like a second class citizen all the time. The meal pal barcode is hidden behind some table that someone is always sitting at so it's super awkward to scan. Then I always have to wait for it to be made while standing at where the line starts and say no I'm not in line 10 times. The drinks sound great but the prices are insane. The baked goods are also crazy expensive.
The coffee was of perceivable quality. This place is great if you want to have a sauna experience during the summer. My god it's warm in there. Wifi is only for 1hr.
The coffee is good and decently priced. The pastries are overpriced and the service is ATROCIOUS. There was a female employee that was the main culprit. She was very rude to customers. She kept her stuff in a corner and made coffee to put on a table to save for her friend or boyfriend that had left and came back HOURS later. She was so rude to anyone that wanted to sit there in this packed coffee house. She willingly gave away free things to her friend and was nice to them but refused to show anyone else the same hospitality. I'd have to be desperate for coffee in order to go here again.
The food/drinks are decent but the prices are bananas -- $7.60 for an iced tea slushie! -- and the main barista (manager?) has some sorta personality issue that makes him deeply unpleasant to deal with... When I said I was having trouble deciding which açaí bowl to order he said people have worse problems in the world and suggested I read up on Gaza 🙃 (and no, he was not joking -- he was totally serious and walked away, and someone else had to take my order).
Popped in for the first time for a snack. Seems like a typical college spot. Good deals, fast turn around but the only thing hot was the tea. The soup was room temp and the “eggroll” (fried burrito?) was cold. The food is handled improperly so 2 days later I’m still unable to hold in solid food.
I really wanted to like this cute little coffee shop, but I was frustrated all the times when I ordered something there, and not once did the extremely young, careless, first-day-on-the-job-looking dudes there took my orders seriously. They simply forgot all my orders. All the times. I won't go there again. I'm done with this place. If you want to pick up some coffee around the block, go to Cafe Bene just about two doors away. There the staff were always polite and attentive. Even though the pastries are less attractive.
Great espresso and açaí, horrible and mean spirited staff. I removed an air pod (no music was playing) and before asking me what type of milk I wanted, the barista went ahead and logged my order and complained "Oh! You aren't even listening to me? Fine." Look, bad days happen to all of us and I don't begrudge anyone for being impatient or miserable at their job. But bruh, you are working in customer service. If you can't bother to put that aside, you shouldn't be here. I like the bean, but if you're reading this, avoid this location at all costs.
Looking for coffee? Go anywhere but here. Their coffee was so bad. Also the folks making coffee were just regular workers and not baristas, who had no idea how to make a latte.
Very nice staff, great hot chocolate, good location & very friendly & helpful staff Shame their internet is so bad. Couldn't get anything done there.
tl;dr: - Really delightful coffee/espresso—Sweet, well balanced, ethically obtained. Big fan. - Customer service here is pretty mid to bad, despite my intense desire to want to like them - Atmosphere is more of a takeout coffee place with a few chairs and tables to stop in for a few minutes before heading out again. Not the sort of place you want to hang at for hours. Long story long: Okay, here's the deal: I LOVE the espresso here. Excellent coffee, beautiful espresso, and this is coming from someone who has worked in the coffee industry for many years. Service, on the other hand, has always been iffy. I've been here a number of times (often in Sundays, but othe days as well) as I am in the area quite regularly, and I WANT to like this place so much because their coffee is so excellent. And yet, every time I've been here, I've had issues with their service and wait time. First, their baristas don't seem to be particularly inclined to be friendly. I'm not saying they have to be exuberant and bending backwards for me, but a smile and some manners wouold be nice. Instead, I have received snappy comments, impatience, and a general sense of distaste toward my presence. They take their good ole time making my coffee and I often end up standing there for close to 10-15 minutes, despite only being one or two customers in the shop (including me). At one time, they even did not have what I ordered and then let me and my partner stand their for fifteen minutes or so, until I went up and inquired about my order, to which they informed me they didn't have the type of pourover coffee I ordered available. (I guess they just weren't going to tell me?) Atmosphere is fine—The financial district is a small place attached to a business building, so isn't necessarily the kind of place that has a cozy environment, but also doesn't really need to either. 1
The customer service is so bad, I didn't even have to set foot into this location to make my review. I work at a neighboring retail store and 4 employees used to go here religiously, until their staff got overturned. I'd constantly have to let my employees leave our sales floor to return to this coffee shop bc when they got back to work with their orders, their orders were botched! One girl ordered a plain black coffee for me and when she got back,it had milk and sugar in it..yikes! Another time another one of my employees got charged for 2 muffins and was only given one, and when she went back they didn't believe her...shady business.. we now all go to the 711 across the street and have never been happier lol. Better Service, options and way better prices at the 711
Worst iced latte ever. I ask for Splenda and they give me ONE, with a “just one, ok?”
I tried this place for the first time and the Acai bowl was absolutely disgusting. The Acai tasted spoiled and when I went back and explained what happened the cashier was being rude telling me I ate half the bowl when it was filled all the way up just mixed up cause I thought it would help the Acai taste better. I took two spoon full and spit it out how bad it was. I spent $17 and got no refund he told me if I wanted another bowl I’d have to pay full price. I am absolutely livid and never will go there again.
Waited 15 min for smoothie and when we asked about it they said they forgot our order and there were 10 people in the whole spot already served, being busy okay I understand but barely and girl had audacity to be like it wasn’t that long 😐 ..
The worker did not wear a hair cap in my daughter and I got hair in our smoothies. They didn’t seem to really care for regular for regular New Yorkers and catered to the more socialist crowd. They let you know it too.
There’s short male with dark skin .. is coughing and sneezing without wearing a mask , spreading germs all over the Coffe machine, cups, all over 🙀it’s really disgusting
I’ve avoided The Bean for years because, frankly, it always looked dirty… but I needed to send some emails and most coffee shops nearby had already closed. I should’ve gone anywhere else. The matcha was chunky and overpriced (7.30 for a small), the space was dirty, and the staff? Downright hostile. The staff yelled at an elderly man for asking for the bathroom code, then mocked him after he left. It was uncomfortable and mean-spirited. Even getting on the WiFi felt like trying to clear TSA. Hard pass. Avoid.
89 F outside right now, humidity 85%, and they don't have AC turned on in the coffee shop. But not because it's broken or anything out of usual, it's just not meant to be on by the words of one of the baristas. So don't go inside if you want to sit and have a coffee or you'll have a stroke it actually feels easier to breathe outdoors
The barista I dealt with at this location was very nasty and rude to me. I stood at the cashier for quite a while waiting for him to take my order while all the while his back was turned without even acknowledge a customer standing there waiting. What he should have said was “I’ll be with you in a minute mam” and that would’ve been enough. But no, when I said excuse me, he barked “ I’m taking care of other people”. And I’ve worked in a busy customer service environments probably since he’s been in diapers and I know that snapping at customers is not how you provide good service. Clearly this barista with a baseball cap dark thick hair and mustache about 5’7 needs to be retrained on how to talk to all people. I told him now he completely lost a customer and left. In continuing to allow this pouty attitude towards customers, you’re going to loose patrons and will eventually loose business because no-one should be talked down and condescended just ro order coffee.
They are so short staffed- only one person working here and the wait is very long. Lattes are not good.
Shocking service. I was told by a staff member to order at a different spot. I waited there, but no one took my order and no one even acknowledged me. Then I watched the same staff member take the next customer’s order instead. This experience felt discriminatory and unacceptable. I don’t understand how this kind of treatment is still happening If the tall female staff member is working part-time, she should still understand her role and basic customer service responsibilities. Customers shouldn’t be left confused or ignored
Showed up to order coffee and croissants. We wanted to order and sit. My son's had sandwiches, I didn't want one. And they literally kicked us out. Said no outside food even though we were at the counter ordering. Never going there and not recommending for anyone
Tough spot. Really bad energy after dark. The manager was essentially yelling at his employee who was doing her absolute best. Super loud music, kind of an obnoxious energy, not very nice :( Mostly broke my heart how mean the guy was being. Wifi didn’t work. Asked politely for some support and was basically yelled at. Really yellow overhead lighting. Has outlets. Chai latte was very very very sweet.
WORST MUFFIN EVER GUYS. Never ever try any pastries here. I have ordered a Orange Muffin, it was so weird taste that I had to throw it away and then I went to the cashier and ordered Blueberry Muffins with a thought that at least this would be good, But sorry to say that these were the WORST MUFFINS OF MY LIFE and I have wasted my 9 dollars. Believe me, I have try so many bakery places, I can say that this was the worst one. I wish I could ask for a refund. However, Sergio was nice and hospitable. They also offer 2 hrs free Wifi only with a code on your receipt.
