Hibino Brooklyn Reviews
There were things I didn't like but I could tell they were very well made for what they were. My chicken teriyaki was also great even after I reheated the bit I took home. My boyfriend loves the place!
The sushi is always very fresh and delicious. The specials are creative and usually cannot be missed. These guys do an amazing job every time.
Wonderful restaurant. After living in Japan, I come here when I get longing for authentic Japanese cuisine. Nostalgic but contemporary comfort food. Never disappoints.
Great sushi. Selection of daily specials that mix it up. Friendly staff. No reservations, and the word is out, so there is usually a wait, but you can grab a drink a few doors down!
The sashimi platter was excellent, and I had a soup starter from the specials board which was delicious. So nice my partner also ordered another one.
Best sushi in Brooklyn Heights / Cobble Hill! Friendly service, great atmosphere and delicious selection of sushi and other dishes. True neighborhood spot.
Everything is delicious. Good trick is to go with a 1-2 friends and order 1 item from every section on the menu. Don't go expecting sushi -- the cooked dishes are the stars.
Authentic Japanese Sushi --- one of the few in Brooklyn. Small and intimate, so it can be a wait but worth it. Highest quality food, beautifully prepared and presented.
Hibino is a restaurant not to miss! Off the radar, delicious and fresh fish, authentic Japanese, great service and the menu is always changing with their daily obanzai. Simply the best in Brooklyn.
Favorite place in all of Brooklyn Heights / Cobble Hill. It's amazing service with even better Japanese food. You have your option of sushi, entrees and obanzai. Hibino is famous for their obanzai, which are $5 appetizers that come from a family recipe and change weekly. Get here early though because the obanzai do sell out often and quickly.
Hibino is quiet, stylish, the food is delightful and the waiters are wonderful. On the rare occasion we eat in a restaurant, usually it's HIBINO! 💕‼️FYI - early in the evening it is an ideal family restaurant, later it becomes more cozy, couple-ideal.
After many months living outside the city due to the pandemic, one of the best parts of coming home was Hibino. The food is extraordinary. The restaurant is low key and attractive. A great restaurant.
Both sushi and cooked dishes are very high quality and beautifully presented. Service is meticulous and friendly. Wonderful value for money.
Feels like the kind of place one would eat in a study Ghibli film. No joke. Affordable bento boxes and the nicest staff on earth. I go here weekly for the lunch special.
Great quality price ratio. The sashimi set was extremely delicious, particularly the two salmon ones. Definitely recommend.
Got sushi takeout here and it was delicious. Two rolls and tuna tataki. The interior looks nice - we will probably return for dine-in.
Excellent sushi and Japanese food Quality of mackerel is amazing. Their homemade tofu out of this world They also have a consistent quality, every time I go it’s the same excellent food
This is our favorite sushi place in the whole city. We get takeaway once a week. It's fresh and flavorful and we absolutely love it.
This place was amazing! The fish was so fresh and everything was delicious. If you’re a spicy scallop lover definitely order that.
Simple, excellent Osakan cooking, in a lovely neighborhood place. The obanzai (small dishes) are great every time we go.
Delicious, eel and yellow tail dishes were the star. Miso soup and rice great. I would say don’t expect the entrees to be more than the item in the dish name.
I've been coming here for a while with my dad. It's my favorite Japanese restaurant in the city. Everyone who works here is so friendly and they always answer any questions I have. I love the rotating obanzai, they're always great and there's always at least one I want to try. The miso salmon is my favorite permanent menu item, but I've had pretty much everything, and it's all good.
I’ve been to Kyoto and just found a little Kyoto in Brooklyn. This restaurant is minimal and zen which makes it quite authentic. It’s not overdecorated or trying too hard to feel Japanese. This is as Japanese as It will ever get. We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The staff was pleasant too.
Such a lovely spot in Greenpoint ! Situated in really scenic area. The restaurant is small in size, but really clean and has great ambience. Food was so amazing. I love that Japanese cuisine has proportions that are just right. Each dish was so deliciously prepared. They seem to change out their obanzai ばんざい daily(since it is based on the tradition of using ingredients, mainly veg or seafood, that usually may end up being discarded). Our obanzai we chose were the Beef tendon curry (SO soft and tender, full of umami flavors) and Japanese Potato salad. My friend and I also had some sushi and the tonkatsu entree. So yummy! My fav was probably the obanzai curry 🍛 Service was amazing, efficient and fast, and all servers were super nice.
Re: COVID - super careful staff that obviously cares about reducing community spread. Spaced tables, completely masked staff, really great. I just went back here after two years and missed this place so much. The food is WONDERFUL. We were talking about the agedashi tofu for a week leading up to our reservation. It is delicious. Excellent sushi and sashimi. Our waiter made a perfect sake recommendation. This is truly one of the best places in NYC.
Prices are a bit higher than they should be, but this is the most authentic Japanese place in the area. They don't have much sushi - which tells you that you are in for a good time. Recommend any of the daily specials or miso broiled salmon - can't go wrong! Updated in April, 2022...still amazing! Hamachi Kama to die for. It's a local gem.
My absolute favorite neighborhood restaurant in the area, sushi is always super fresh, the $5 obanzai dishes are interesting, cheap and pretty much always a different selection, so something new to try. The chicken teriyaki is fantastic, which is generally not something you say about a 'plain' dish like that. The staff are super friendly and everything is reasonably priced for the quality. It fills up quickly with locals but plenty of bars nearby to grab a beer while you wait.
Some of the tastiest tofu I have had to date. Service was swift & patient while my group stumbled through the menu. New York City is the land of mediocre sushi, Hibino is an exception. A well deserved 5 star review.
Fantastic cooked Japanese food. Their appetizer specials change daily and are always a pleasant surprise. They home made tofu is amazing. I prefer the cold one.
Hibino has wonderfully fresh fish and delightful/kind service. Always impressed/very consistent spot. Sometimes hard to get in bc it’s so wonderful, but can get drinks nearby at Henry Public or other fantastic cocktail spots. Highly recommend!
Spectacular! I get excited every time I eat from Hibino's. A lot of attention to details, lovely staff and the taste is impeccable. Their lunch obento is delicious. I tried salmon collar, yellowtail tuna and fish cakes. Salmon is my favorite but the others are just as good.
The best and most affordable sushi you’ll find in Brooklyn. Their lunch special puts other options to shame. The service is also great, with the staff recognizing you each time. The specials never fail either!
Hibino is a nice quiet little Japanese restaurant. The servers are attentive enough to take care of your needs without being over bearing. The dishes are very unique being styled after Kyoto's cuisine.
They are busy here but the food is very good and the host is so nice. He gave me some tea when my date took a while to show up and he helped me get a soy sauce stain out of my shirt. A+
Very very good Japanese restaurant and probably the only authentic Japanese restaurant in Cobble Hill (of the ones I've been to). The fish is faultless and the daily specials are usually rewarding. I know Japanese restaurants, and this is one of the few in NYC that matches quality as it is in Japan.
Top quality sushi and Japanese restaurant. I particularly love the miso salmon. Their daily "obanzai" specials are a great way to keep the menu fresh. One of my top 3 restaurants in the neighborhood!
A neighborhood favorite! The sushi is really fresh and delicious and really great value, and part of the menu changes regularly. The sushi and sashimi platters are always interesting and fresh
Great local sushi and sashimi spot. Quality fish, great chefs who know what they're doing. Good sake menu and service. Will definitely come back!
This is a fantastic local spot, orders are always right and on time. The sushi is unpretentious and consistently good. Highly recommend!
Super fresh fish at excellent prices. Kyoto-style obanzai, pressed sushi, and futomaki are special, but really everything is delicious. Save room for dessert! The soy milk pudding and dorayaki ice cream sandwich are worth it. I've also been here numerous times for lunch. Great bento box special. Yellowtail and salmon collar options are the best.
Friday night, celebrating my sisters birthday—Hibino was perfect. They only have limited seating, but when I explained I have two toddlers they were more than accommodating. The fish melted in my mouth and the rice did too. The special small dishes are worth ordering and the sake is a must, especially because it’s moderately priced. They even refrigerated the cake for us and lit the candles—all without a service charge.
Wonderful music, friendly staff, extremely tasty food. Probably the best japanse restaurant I have eaten in. A must visit!
This is an intimate authentic Japanese restaurant with very friendly and hospitable staff and a rotating tapas menu. We were here for the first time and were very impressed. The quality of the appetizers (squid tempura, duck noodles, and agedashi tofu) was excellent: unique and savory with each bite. The rolls were fresh. We were very full with 2 rolls and 3 appetizers for two people. Wish we took photos! Also, it was their restaurant anniversary so we were given complimentary tea and a large tote bag! This might be our new sushi spot in Cobble Hill 😍
We LOVE the food here. Cosy atmosphere with delicious fresh food. Seasonal lunch specials that change daily. Beef sukiyaki is my husbands go to and mine is their yellowtail collar! Divine! The staff are always so warm and welcoming.
Such a special spot. A break from the sushi places in NYC that are all the same. Homestyle japanese comfort foods too. Best agedashi tofu. Casual date spot after a walk on the BK promenade.
We had a wonderful time at Hibino. The service is friendly and quick, and the food incredible. We weren't familiar with obanzai during our first couple of visits but now feel like experts. You really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. It tends to get busy for dinners, but lunch is more mellow.
Top notch. Cozy atmosphere with very welcoming and lovely staff. The quality of the food is impeccable. They have a full sushi menu as well as other Japanese specialties. The soft tofu dessert is one of my favorite desserts around. They close relatively early so turnover can be tricky if you show up after all the seats have been taken
Simply the best. Great food in a cozy, casual setting.
I was first surprised at how oily the cuisine was, but the fat brought so much flavor with it. I went back twice in one week. One of my fav Japanese places. I DID NOT EAT THE SUSHI FYI. Even though I'm Japanese I don't like sushi. (May family as well)
dined on a tuesday at 6pm with my husband and a toddler— easy to get a table. service is attentive and the food is *excellent*. high quality, great portion size— the rice in the sushi roll is perfect temp and seasoned beautifully. the size of the sashimi in the roll is unprecedented! the salmon roll had fat, fluffy pieces of salmon spilling out of it. my toddler ate up all the edamame and the grilled salmon. we can’t wait to go back.
Hibino is our favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. It just exemplifies quality and care, the ingredients are top notch and the staff (especially Kenta!) are so friendly and welcoming. I get the bento lunch box weekly and it’s always something to look forward to. The salmon collar is unbeatable. They’re able to get their flavors so on point without it ever being heavy or too salty.
Wow, the Spicy Salmon I had here was fantastic. Some of the best I've had in NY. Super soft and fresh fish (not too fatty either), rice that had the perfect texture, and a well balanced spicy mayo that wasn't too overwhelming. Overall amazing sushi, highly recommended.
This delicious and affordable place tucked away in Brooklyn Heights is perfect for those seeking to get bang for your buck. Fairly authentic. Highly recommend the fried tofu and any daily special. The portion of fish in each roll is generous. You'll be full after 3.The roasted green tea ice cream is also a must! They don't take reservations so get there early if you don't want to wait. P.S. Try the Belgian style yuzu flavored beer!!
If Hibino is good enough for Jennifer Lawrence it’s good enough for me. Joking but not really — she and her fiancé Cook sat one table over from us tonight. My real review.... The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was thoughtful, fresh and delicious. The environment was cozy and perfect. Overall I loved it. I had the fresh tofu, chef’s sushi platter, miso salmon, shrimp in tofu skin (the highlight) and a bottle of Sake. All ideal. My neighbors talked this place up and it lived up to the expectations. Highly recommended in Cobble Hill!
U can travel to japan without taking a plane. The smile, treatment and japanese casual outfit of the staff make u feel far away from Brooklyn. Free tap water, good selection of drinks and food, very afforable prices with great quality. Outstanding obanzais (small plates) that changes daily.
Wonderful, wonderful small neighbourhood Japanese restaurant with interesting daily specials and quality sushi and sashimi dishes. I’ll return for sure!
I love this place, I did not expect for the sushi rolls to be so big with so much fish! Also it is so amazing how they have a large variety of options. The pumpkin croquettes were great. Service and atmosphere is like a diner almost, but with Japanese features.
The miso salmon was perfect, and the server was super friendly! I also recommend their soybean pudding! Really enjoy my time there, excellent vibe, food, and services. Have been to the LIC branch before, and the service was not nice, I feel the LIC one was short of staff, only 2 staffs there and the attitude was…😅😵
Had such a delightful time at this restaurant. The staff is incredibly welcoming, friendly and accommodating. It felt like I was a guest in their home! I got the yellow tail salad, miso salmon, and some of the specials they had for the day. Everything came out hot, fresh, and at such a reasonable price. Even the miso soup was delicious - which I didn’t expect to be so good! For my entree, I got the miso glazed salmon. It was well cooked, fresh, and had a great umami flavor. I also appreciated the good selection of sake they had available. Would definitely visit again, especially if I’m the neighborhood!
Minimalist awesome Japanese spot in Cobble Hill. Fresh awesome fish. What I love about this place is that it feels so family owned, but on top of that the food is just simply delicious. As Another reviewer mentioned mentioned there is no teriyaki drizzle over mediocre sushi rolls here. Usually, I can feel a little sick from bad quality fish and that It’s not the case here. I love that they do daily specials. A lot of Asian cultures embrace little side dishes! It keeps coming back fresh and fun. I love their spicy tuna roll and obanzais (side dishes that chang daily). Don’t get me started w/ the fresh tofu pudding. I wish I would’ve discovered this place sooner. My only feedback is I wished they had lighter dressings. They are a little overly seasoned for me. Otherwise, all the goodness. Love it! Support small businesses.
This hidden gem in Cobble Hill has one of the best sushi in the city. The pieces come very fresh and the rice is properly seasoned. It’s pricier than the typical sushi in a standard Japanese restaurant but you’ll get the premium quality of a high-end sushi place without the high prices. The variety of daily “obanzai” dishes keep me coming back; one day I had fried Salmon balls and another day it was a house-made tofu dish. Easily the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn, if not the city. And thank god the menu doesn’t have the sauce-laden rice-bombs-with-barely-any-seafood monstrosity people call “sushi” nowadays.
This small neighborhood gem has been around for years and I've visited a few times for lunch and dinner. The food is consistently good and high quality, made with fresh ingredients. They've developed such a local following that you can always expect a line of patrons waiting to dine. This time I went with cousins who are near weekly regulars. Their trick is to visit Hibino midweek before the restaurant opens to ensure immediate seating. We waited for about 20 minutes before they opened their doors and were the last group of people to enter before they were completely full. My cousin always gets the Grilled Salmon Collar Bento and raved about it, so the rest of us got the same and promptly cleaned them out of their stock of salmon collars. One of us had to choose a different menu item, so the Beef Short Ribs was selected. We also ordered some tuna and uni sushi to start. Everything we ordered had good flavors and textures, and gave me comfort food vibes. It was like eating Japanese home cooking, but what also stands out is how fresh everything tastes. The high quality ingredients and freshness is apparent in every bite, and I think this is what keeps people coming back for more. I daresay they'll make a regular out of me too.
Everything was awesome. One of my favorites from the menu was the shira-ae. Basically blanched green veggies with a bit of salt and a tofu sauce. The tofu sauce was delicious, and different than any tofu I had ever experience. This dish was very mild and nuanced, and you could really just sink into the flavors. The agedashi tofu was also excellent. “Hibino” as I understand, means “daily.” As in the ingredients are prepared daily, and I will attest that everything tasted fresh. The sushi is also excellent, the yellowtail jalapeño was among my favorites. I imagine this is what a great restaurant in Kyoto tastes like. Our server was great too. She explained the dishes, to us and made some great recommendations. I look forward to going back there.
Really enjoyed my meal here. I would say this is a more modern take on Japanese food. They have the usual that you would expect but a fantastic specials menu where you can tell someone is taking care and effort. I love Japanese food and this was a refreshing place to go out of the normal spicy tuna roll spots.
Delicious, simple and affordable! Try any dish with tofu as it is housemade and absolutely singular in taste and texture alike. The daily obanzi, or homestyle recipes, are always surprisingly minimalist when it comes to ingredients and rich in flavor and textures. I ordered a non traditional coleslaw from this menu on my visit, along with the Hibino Sushi Plate. The sushi was fresh of course, and the chef selected items were relatively outstanding compared to the yellowtail scallion roll I selected for the second half of the dish, which was simply delightful. Last but not least, do not pass up the soymilk custard for dessert!
Fresh sushi in a non-pretentious setting. The lobster roll I had was tasty but was on the too awkward to easily eat side. Next time I want to try their much touted small plates and their desserts.
Food was great, as usual, but had to wait for 25 minutes in the cold waiting for a table, cause they don't take reservations.
One of my favorite Japanese restaurant in Brooklyn love their dinner set with obanza miso soup and rice. Homemade tofu and pudding is a must try. Love this place since 2007
Compared to other traditional Japanese restaurants, Hibino is a nice relaxing change of pace. Very relaxed atmosphere, an offering of Japanese Tapas, and freshly made Tofu, you should get there early for dinner since the place gets packed real quickly. Start off with the beef kakuna. For the entree with the most variety of flavors, get the Anago Hako Sushi box. and enjoy with a bottle of Sake.
The food is good and fresh but I dare a little expensive for my point of view only because for a kind of food like this you should expect a service at the same level and this is not :especially when you see the sushi man is drinking a beer when he is preparing food, or personnel bring you the bill at ten without asking if you would like a postry and finally when you ask to call a taxi and they tell to go just around the corner to find one.. Because generally hotel call a taxi!!!
Lunch was had here. Tasty. Trendy. But the kind of trendy that is trendy to the residents of cobble hill, so trendy. But trendy in a slightly lame sweater vest way. Like mature trendy. That flosses teeth everyday. Japanese comfort food for 30/ 40 somethings that have settled down and are full of regret. Regardless, The glossy soy delicately painted on the salmon, sushi, all yum. Lunch special, price, and portions - all great!
Homey little place, particularly when it's raining. Their staff is insanely warm, but not obsequiously so. Their sushi is great, but their specials board-- basically Japanese tapas-- is where they really stand out!
The lunch menu is great with a variety of plates. The dining room is quiet and nice but the staff want you stay outside when you are waiting for your friend and want you to leave very fast so not really client oriented.
Food was yum! They accommodated replacing pork broth as I don’t eat pork. And created a meatless dish for my friend. Music was a bit annoying as they started playing really fast rock music so I naturally felt rushed lol. waiters were friendly. Only a few people there on A Tuesday night and came in after stopping somewhere else that was overpriced. Clean and open. BYOB with no corkage fee if you buy from a place down the block with the same owner.
Worth the wait. This place is popular and cramped, but the crowd outside moves in pretty quickly, and the sushi is high in quality. Wait staff is attentive despite packed house. no loud sake-bombing atmosphere as in many others
The food was very good and I really enjoyed it. I had the chef's choice sushi platter served with miso soup and salad. The service was good but short people as far as I could tell. I arrived first of my party and was told to wait outside till the rest of the party arrived. It was over 90 degrees outside and there was plenty of room for me to stand in the AC. When my party showed up 3 minutes later we were asked to wait outside while the table was cleared, we didn't. It took a minute because they were short handed, we understood, but we weren't waiting outside in the heat. Lost a star for that. Otherwise the service was good once seated. I'd go back again.
The prices are on the high side here but the quality of sushi is pretty good and so is the service. I found the sushi platter options a little limited (no "for two" options, for example). They're kid friendly and have a nice dessert selection. The one person in our party who did not order sushi was also happy with their selection.
Fun spot with changing daily specials - their $8 obanzai is the main attraction. We had the pork shiokaji which was incredible, so smoky and just the right amount of fat. Their roasted veg dish and salmon tartare don were also delectable. Their barley tea was also superb with unlimited hot water refills. Their sushi however - somewhat underwhelming - average fish quality but fair price. I would come again for hot dishes
The pricing is pretty reasonable. The space is adorable and conveniently located near the train station. I highly recommend the panko-fried eel, which was absolutely delicious. The salmon skin sushi was also a great choice. However, I wouldn’t recommend the smoked salmon. The menu described it as having spicy mayo and jalapeño, but it didn’t quite live up to that expectation. Overall, it’s a great spot for a casual meal in a nice neighborhood..
It's no wonder why Hibino is always so packed - the sushi is simply outstanding! We had the tuna tataki salad to start, which was flavorful and generous enough for two. We also shared a sushi special, along with two pieces of heavenly toro. The fried eel roll was scrumptious without being greasy or heavy. And to top off the evening, we enjoyed a Cloudy House sake that was not too sweet. All in all, it was a delicious date night experience that reminds one why they fell in love with this restaurant in the first place. Highly recommended!
Long wait, friendly service, good food but nowhere near as good or fresh as Ki Sushi. I'd give it a second chance and try more dishes, but I can't see how people can put Hibino at the same level at Ki.
Their LIC location is better. We ordered the Beef Kakuni (which we loved at LIC) and it was a smaller portion and more expensive at this location. We spent over $200 (before tip) for 4 people and everything was just fine. I left still hungry. The staff was friendly. Check out their LIC location if you’re in the area.
After visiting multiple times, I’ve noticed an inconsistency with their food. I enjoyed the salmon box pressed sushi which tasted unique because of the natto beans and shiso leaf. However on one visit, they were hard to pick up because the rice would fall apart, while on another visit, the rice to fish ratio was way too high but the rice was perfectly sticky. They have daily specials called “obanzai.” The waiters were friendly. I loved their dessert sake which was a yuzu sake. It tends to be a little warm inside the restaurant. Overall, I love the service but I haven’t found the food impressive.
Mid sushi compared to prices. Horrible service (waitress had a stick up her ahh and weird attitude for service industry), atmosphere was average. They were rushing us out the restaurant, never asked if we wanted anything else, never said thank you or bye. Left the restaurant still hungry and unsatisfied. Would definitely not go back but you do you if you decide to go
I finished my meal as a solo dinner on a Saturday night and was taking a few minutes to relax before heading home after paying (including > 20% tip). The server abruptly comes over and says in a rude tone "the next table will be here in 5 minutes" and walks away. There was an empty table beside me (the wait-list rush was over), and this restaurant is walk-ins only so clearly they were just annoywd to have someone who had paid still seated. I appreciate it's a Saturday night and you're trying to turn over tables, but this behavior was uncalled for and absolutely ruined the meal and my experience. I know that had I been there with another person, or had I been drinking, I wouldn't have been treated this way. (Also, there are more subtle, friendly ways to get a customer to leave!) I told them as much when I approached them and all I got was a blank stare and "thank you for your consideration". One of the servers even looked me up and down as I was sharing my frustration. I live I the neighborhood and will absolutely no longer recommend this restaurant to my friends.
