Joloff Brooklyn Reviews
Joloff is a true family-owned restaurant, bringing beautiful Senegalese food and culture to Brooklyn. The owners are so friendly, they came up to us to see how the dinner was going. Beautiful fabrics and art around the inside. You must try the Tiebou Jeun, the national dish of Senegal. Support small biz, go here.
Definitely a must. The decor is exceptional, the food is very delicious and the staff very courteous. It has an authentic Senegalese feel.
Lovely and quiet atmosphere. The owner is always around and very kind. My favorite dish is THIÉBOUDIENNE and Joloff Restaurant is my favorite place to get it. Try the boulettes (seasoned fish meatballs) or the pastels (tiny fish empanadas) and the fried sweet plantains.
Listen Listen Listen omg Bless the cooks and owner. This is my second time eating from this restaurant and also my 2nd time eating fufu, becauseof this place I will forever love FuFu. Thank you so much for sharing your culture with us. I am in love.
We got a bunch of food and shared. It was all super delicious but the yassa chicken was to die for. I will remember that meal for a looooong time.
Joloff is the best!!! We've been eating here for over three years and it is still our #1 go-to spot!! Their food is consistently delicious, warm and comforting, with great portion sizes - and it delivers well too. My favorite is probably the Curry Tofu, but all vegetarian dishes are amazing; every entrée is also inherently gluten-free. And even our meat-eating friends can vouch that all their meat/fish dishes are phenomenal. Authentic and "ethnic" but crowd-pleasing (read: "different" but even your out-of-town / suburban guests will enjoy their meal). The vibe of the restaurant itself is very nice and quiet, relaxed and friendly, never a wait, with lots of space - and it's BYOB. We even went for a birthday for 15 people and they took great care of us. Great staff, great service, great food. GO!!!
It's very hard for me to give a restaurant 5 stars. Joloff was amazing and the overall experience earned it 5 stars. It is decorated in a very eclectic way that identifies its Senegalese origins. Mariam the daughter of the owner and waitress extraordinaire patiently explained the dishes and made amazing recommendations. The ginger lemon and Joloff cocktails were AMAZING! We ended up ordering a couple of appetizers (fried yuca and plantains. For our entrees we ordered the national fish dish with Joloff rice, a chicken dish, lamb Chops, and mixed vegetables in a delicious peanut sauce. Beneigh's were a perfect ending to this delicious adventure in West African cuisine.
This place is the real deal African food 👍🏽😁 I had Yassa Ganar, (chicken)let me tell you it’s delicious, also the Yassa Jeun (fish) was also delicious. The Mafe Ganar (chicken) was good too.Nata was the best hostess as she walked us through the menu 😁👍🏽. And people please don’t forget to get some Bissap (sorrel) before you leave 😋.
This restaurant always hits the mark for me. The food is always prepared well. The service is always pleasant. The food here reminds me of my grandmother's cooking. Cooking with love. Good portions, Great Flavor, and reasonable pricing.
Great food and excellent service! We ordered takeout and everything was still super hot even after walking home. Lamb and jollof rice was delicious - only thing was plaintains were a bit plain.
Joloff is an excellent African restaurant serving authentic Senegalese dishes. As a vegetarian-vegan, I was pleased to see a variety of meal options for meat eaters and non-meat eaters. Everyone enjoyed their delicious plates. The atmosphere was a relaxed and inviting. The staff was very nice and attentive. Five stars for me!
A lot of people might not know this but the restaurant is halal. I wasn’t aware until one of my mom-Muslim friends went here and noticed the halal sign on the menu. I decided to try this place out because I’ve never had Senegalese food before and let me tell you some of the best food I’ve ever tried! It took a while to prepare the food but trust me it was definitely worth the wait. Both my friend and my food was flavorful and delicious.
I have been coming to this restaurant for over ten years. I always bring my friends here when they come to visit me. There isn't anything on their menu that I don't like. I am not a vegetarian, but I love their curry tofu. They are great for smaller dinner parties and often have live music. Definitely try the fried yucca sticks. Ask for their extra hot sauce.
As someone who has only a few experiences with African food this place was wonderful! The staff was kind and food was served quickly to-go (and seemingly to tables as well), the taste was well balanced and price seemed right. Definitely recommend!
Excellent family run restaurant! Nice décor and comfortable environment. Get the bissap to drink, it’s delicious. The fried Yucca was good for an appetizer. The lamb was fantastic the sauce had great flavor. I highly recommend the fried doughnuts for dessert.
I've been coming to this place for over 20 something years. I remember the original spot on Fulton Street. I affectionately call the owner "Pops" and love his entire family. We were in Brooklyn and I knew my big sister would want to go there so I made the suggestion and we went. The new spot on Bedford has beautiful photos on the bright colored walls. As soon as you walk in you feel the love. You hear the laughter and see the eyes smiling. You smell the spices and you'll probably see one of his adorable grandchildren walking pass you. (I remember his some of his children, being that small, lol). Yesterday was no different. We wanted to stay but got our food to go and it was fantastic. I normally get the lemon chicken with jollof rice but my sister ordered something different. It was still hot 45 minutes later. The chicken breast were cut up in a tomato base sauce and my jollof rice was amazing. Im so glad I decided to get some food because I would have cheated myself out of a delicious meal. Pops wasn't there but it was great seeing his children and supporting a wonderful restaurant. My big sister enjoyed her food as well. A picture of me and Pops a few years back at the African festival! You can always catch him with a "DOPE HAT" on!
I just ordered the Mafe Ganar, and the food is amazing! 👏🏽 👏🏽👏🏽 I love how it tastes and the texture of it. At some point, my mom and I will come and visit the place. Keep up the good work, guys!
I'm obsessed with the okra and tomato dish. Food took a while to prepare, but the cook/waiter was a mother with a child wrapped on her back. Talk about traditional black love!!! Beautiful to see, feel, and eat!!
Deliiiiicious! Love the Thiebou Ganar especially but everything is always so tasty and prepared perfectly. Highly recommend 🙌😍
Haven't eaten african cuisine before Joloff - so glad we tried it because we loved it. Fresh homely food with a lot of unique flavors. Expect a little bit of wait for some of the items
My wife and I had a really nice meal here - the food is excellent and service is friendly. They also gave great recommendations about the menu. Wonderful little spot in Bedstuy!
I love the Atmosphere, It was Welcoming, Serene. Felt like Home. Plus Beautiful African Designs. Will Definitely Bring Someone here to Try Their Senegalise Jollof rice.
So good! I stopped by to try before flying out to Senegal. I was amazing. The food was delicious! The owner is so sweet. I can't wait to go back.
Arrived late into Brooklyn from New Mexico. We were very hungry and wanted something close by our Airbnb so the walk would be short. This restaurant came up in Yelp and we love trying new foods. It is a small restaurant and we were the only patrons at 10:00 at night. The food was delicious! I ordered the Tiebuu Ganar (chicken stewed in vegetables with joloff rice) and plantains. My son had the Tiebuu Jeun (baked fish with vegetables and joloff rice). We were both surpised with the flavorful dishes. I love finding small places like this that have wonderful food. Very cute establishment and polite staff. Definitely recommend the next time you are in Brooklyn!
Everything I get is amazing. They just celebrated 30 years in the community. I know why. The staff is mostly family and they make you feel like family. Pops is the best! I've been 2 days in a row lol. I'll be back again soon for some more lamb, shrimp and definitely the Joloff rice.
Exceptionally authentic flavors that transport me straight back to my grandmother’s kitchen. Every bite feels like home in the motherland.
I’ve been craving Dibi for weeks and it’s one of the most juiciest flavorful and tender lamb I’ve ever had. It’s sooo good! With the onions?! Jollof?! The ambiance is perfect, customer service 100/10 they were so sweet. I loved my food and will be back many times! Also tried the bissap and ginger mixed together! 10000/10!
Been coming here for years since their original location on Fulton Street. Watched Their daughters grow up behind the register into beautiful ladies and the food hasn’t changed. Great and fulfilling as usual. The atmosphere is is clean and authentic. New location could easily be missed if not paying attention. A must go for good Senegalese food.
perfect spot for west african cuisine! nestled in a lively neighborhood, the location is convenient and adds to the overall experience.
I love the art decisions❤️ the food is delicious 😋
This hole-in-the-wall restaurant serves amazing food (special shout out for the fish pastels) and they are more than generous with their portions. You’ll have a great experience if you come here for a meal
New York is the hub for a plethora of international cuisines. Senegalese food is one of my favorites, and Joloff is where I go to experience it. I have been coming here and bringing visiting guests, for years. The food is delicious, the staff friendly and the ambiance will make you feel like you've been transported to Senegal! Tell them "Marcus sent you"
I have been coming here for years. I love this place!
The food was really good! We got the baked fish with jollof rice, the okra and the beignets. The fish especially was a standout. And the beignets not overpoweringly sweet.
I am only sad that I forgot after 10 years of patronizing Joloff I'm now doing their review. God have mercy on fools and babes lol. Joloff what is and has been my second home since their original location Fulton St has maintained the integrity and quality of their food. Even what must be two decades relocating, Covid, and growing family the love, care, passion and flavor has been consistent in every morsel. I'm grateful to be able to share with my children the love of one of our native homes Senegal 🇸🇳. I pray prosperity, abundance, and love over my family.
loved this place - first time trying Senegalese food and it was delicious. there was very kind service and traditional, cozy decor. I would highly recommend!
What an incredible meal! I am vegetarian and LOVED the Mafe Tofu. My partner said this was the best most succulent chicken he has ever had. And we got it for takeout!! Cannot wait to come in to enjoy all the other options.
The service is great, fast and friendly. The food is Delicious 😋. We had 4 different meals and all we're very tasty. Must try for a true authentic and delicious African culinary experience 5*
This review is based on the quality and preparation of the food. Five stars -- the food is excellent. The ambiance could be improved with better lighting. It's a bit too bright / harsh in there for dine-in, but again, food is excellent so I'll keep coming back.
Extremely happy to have found this beautiful spot. Food was delicious. Service a1. Zero faults. If you haven't tried West African food, get yourself here. If you have, then you'll know how good it is. Well, here it's top drawer. My parter had the Chicken Mafe Ganar - cleaned the plate. I had the Tiebou Jeun - national baked fish dish. Delicious. We will return in a matter of days. Thank you, Joloff.
The ambiance and food at this local, black owned restaurant is phenomenal. I will definitely be visiting again to try more of the delicious dishes they offered, they even have vegetarian and vegan options. Also the Joloff cocktail is a must try. They also have beautiful outdoor seating!!!
Great food, and the owner is such a nice guy. I’ve had the yassa and maffe on numerous occasions, both are great. Well-priced for the quality and the portions, which are large. Nice decor as well.
First time trying West African food! We came here for lunch after visiting the Brooklyn Museum. Ordered a Chicken entree, fried plantains, veggie pastis, and the lemon ginger drinks. We loved everything equally. The flavors were on point and had just the right amount of heat. Chicken was fall off the bone. Seated right away and service was wonderful. Generous portions and my husband and I split everything. More than enough and we took a small container home. Will return!
Truly impressed. I hadn't ever tried african food before, and this place was just perfect for that. Also super cool music playing in the background, would definitely come back if I'm in nyc:)
Each recipe maintains the integrity of its origins. The workers display consistent pleasantness. The food satisfies alongside attentive service. This spot offers the freshest ingredients without the premium cost. This restaurant's staff performs professionally.
The food here makes ordinary ingredients taste extraordinary. These people deliver consistently. Their commitment to good ingredients shows. The team is genuinely friendly and addresses all concerns. I wish my schedule allowed more visits here!
As always they provided the best service and food. The employees combine attentiveness with knowledge. Joloff deserves endless praise for its quality. The flavors were rich and satisfying. This restaurant meets standards.
This restaurant has the best African vibes — Afrobeat music in the background, beautiful décor, and a warm energy. The jollof rice and suya were absolutely delicious, full of authentic flavor. Staff were super friendly and explained the dishes well. I loved the cultural touches that made the experience feel like a trip to West Africa. Highly recommend!
First time ordering after seeing a friend post their food on instagram. The atmosphere is very inviting I wish I would’ve dined in. They opened at 1pm and I was at the door at 1259 lol. I walked out with my food at 107 and I am impressed. My food was fresh and the rice was fluffy and perfectly cooked. I ordered the croaker fish and jolof rice. I rate this food 4/5 only because I wanted a little more of a Smokey taste in my rice.
DELICIOUS senegalese food — it was our first time trying it and it did not disappoint! Staff was very sweet and lots of love was clearly put into the food, which was very hearty and flavorful! The decor is charming as well; the colorful walls, portraits, and entertainment area are a great addition to surround the food.
We loved the food at Joloff! We decided to explore a Senegalese restaurant during our visit to Brooklyn. Given that the African continent comprises more than 50 countries, African cuisine is diverse according to the region of the continent. Senegalese food is a cuisine that stands out. Pay attention when trying to locate the restaurant on Bedford Avenue, you will only see the word "Joloff" in green letters on the glass in front. If you are driving it is easy to pass by. The restaurant features small tables adorned with beautiful traditional West African fabric, and livens up the place. The service was superb, the waitress was attentive and very kind. We began with the fried yuka accompanied by a sauce and a hot ginger tea. The yuka sticks offered a delicate flavor, and the unsweetened ginger tea packed a punch. Since the ginger tea is unsweetened you have the option to add the amount of sugar you desire. The floating mint leaf in the tea added a nice touch. For our main courses, we chose Mafe Ganar – chicken stewed in peanut sauce with vegetables, served alongside jolof rice. The peanut sauce delivered a smooth balance between the peanuts and the vegetables. Another dish we tried was okra and jolof rice, which was well cooked and had a pleasant flavor profile. One thing to note is that Joloff has a comprehensive vegetarian/vegan section on the menu, a feature I have not seen in other African restaurants. Overall, Joloff impressed us with its Senegalese flavors, warm atmosphere, and excellent service. It's definitely worth a visit for those looking to explore West African cuisine.
The food tasted like a hearty homemade meal. Really enjoyed the flavors in the joloff rice. We tried the national dish (baked fish in tomato sauce) and the vegetable legume (really just potatoes) with peanut. Both were well flavored and the joloff rice tasted differently because the rice is made with the respective sauce. The fried plantains were fresh and not greasy. Also tried the vegetable fataya (bite size fried dough filled with veggie puree); these were ok. Highly recommend the food!
This was an Amazing food experience we had at Joloff restaurant! The staff was very Hospitable, attentive and accommodating. The ambiance was very vibrant and the dishes were so delicious! This restaurant is worth revisiting. Thank you for helping us celebrate our friends birthday. We enjoyed our visit and many blessings to The Chef🙏🏽
SO happy I found this spot as I love jollof rice and now can enjoy it as a vegan! We got the yucca fries, spring rolls, and 3 plates of different curries (mafe tofu, okra, and thieu tofu) all with jollof rice. We also got the house drink which was a mix of jamaica (hibiscus) and ginger which was sweet and refreshing! Great service and a super filling meal - definitely will come back next time I find myself in the neighborhood
This was my first time experiencing Senegalese cuisine and they didn't disappoint for 1 second. The decor gives you the feeling you're someplace else besides Brooklyn. Very warm and welcoming. The service was top notch too. Our server took the time to explain the dishes to make sure we choose the right one for us. The best part was she took pride in it, which made me confident the food was gonna be good. The second the food came I wanted to eat my food, my friends, and the people sitting next to me. You definitely won't be disappointed, especially if you get the okra on the side. Then was it down with some of the freshlu made juices.
A nice cozy and community spot. Perfect 4 a dinner date or Friday night out. Food portions were small with plenty of authentic Jollof rice. Drinks were great.
My mother and I have been ordering her for as long as I can remember. This was my first time sitting down and esting there. Good atmosphere and amazing food. The only shortcoming was the wait for the food. Other than that it was a great experience.
The food was great. Warm and pleasant atmosphere. I ordered my food to go and it does take time. Waited too long in my opinion. Call your order in before you come to Joloff or have it delivered.
Great food. One star off for atmosphere -- the color temperature of the lighting is very cold and makes it feel less welcoming than it could.
Just got back from visiting Sénégal for the first time, and after 2 weeks of being pampered to Authentic Senegalese cuisine, I thought that I would finally give my neighborhood Jolof restaurant a try... I enjoyed the Atmosphere, the attention, and the food. Since I was treated to dinner, I can't say much about pricing. I will definitely go back to try other dishes. 😀
I have been there s couple of times. The food and service is good. Usually i get the lamb or chicken.
It was fine. I got the Mafe Ganar. The chicken was delicious, but the jollof rice wasn't as good as it used to be when they had the spot on Fulton. I'm not sure if its still run by the same family that it was before. The okra was undercooked which was disappointing. The flavor was there, but the finish lacked 'done'. It was hard and chewy. The salad was decent, but small. The dressing was exquisite. Overall I'll give it a 7 out of 10. I only really enjoyed the chicken and salad. To spend almost $40 and not fully enjoy my entire meal is unacceptable to me. I'm saddened to leave this review. The service, atmosphere and ambiance was delightful. Blessings.
Food was solid, got the Senegalese national fish dish which was really tasty. The sides were good but not particularly special in my opinion. Definitely worth a visit though.
I’ve been wanting to try this restaurant for ages and I got to try it finally. I had the Jollof and the Dibi for delivery (Via Seamless) and I wasn’t disappointed. The packaging was great and there was no spillage. There were utensils packed as well. The portion of Jollof rice was perfect and it wasn’t too spicy. The Dibbi was grilled and seasoned well, and the portion was decent. The onions and the mustard-based sauce they used were tasty (per usual). For a takeout dish, it was done very well and I can only imagine how it is when you dine in. I was savoring my meal for hours.
This restaurant is family-run, so keep that in mind. The food is well worth the wait, however. I usually get the bissap to accompany my meal. I've only gotten lamb and fish dishes here, but they are consistently EXCELLENT. The joloff is amazing. The only small downside is the wait- don't come too hungry. Edited to add pictures and to say that the food is always so delicious. The lamb is tender and juicy, the sauces are thick and flavorful, and the bissap is refreshing. I try to stop by whenever I'm in the neighborhood.
I’ve walked by Joloff Restaurant more times than I can count, and I’m kicking myself for not stepping in sooner. This Senegalese spot in Brooklyn is truly a neighborhood gem. I finally made my way inside, and wow—what a pleasant surprise! The vibes are warm, the space is inviting, and the food? Absolutely phenomenal. The joloff rice is hands-down some of the best I’ve had—perfectly seasoned, rich in flavor, and paired with fish that was tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Every bite felt like a celebration of West African culture. If you live nearby or are just visiting the area, do yourself a favor and stop by. Joloff Restaurant is serving serious flavor with a side of hospitality.
Very cute place, has a whole family run vibe. It was a long wait for service, but the food is very good. I had the chicken with Joloff rice. Good portion size and very flavorful.
I have dined at Joloff in the past and always enjoyed it. This past experience was disappointing. They didn't have ice for the beverages and they didn't go out to buy a bag of ice. The lamb was very tough. I wasn't pleased at all.
You can have broken rice Jollof, decent plate size. Appetizers are small sized. Staff tends to give you space to the point you have to go find help. Lovely drinks. Yasa is one of the best in Brooklyn.
It's a very nice atmosphere for a get together. I can't say it's authentic African seasoning because the dishes are getting blander and blander. Maybe it's mass appeal and you have to cater to American taste buds?
Got the chicken yassa (lemon-y flavor) and dibi (lamb) with joloff. Yassa had great flavor but they only gave four pieces of chicken and it hurt my stomach after. The lamb dish was so so because the meat was tough to chew. Dibi is supposed to be smaller and tender chunks of lamb. Previous reviews for this dish at this restaurant showed smaller chunks as well. I didn’t receive that. Got other cuts of Lamb that I don’t typically like to eat.
People really like this place online and it's right around the corner from where I live so I decided I would try it. I was a little disappointed because the service was extremely slow and the food wasn't that good. I love West African food and had the great opportunity to spend a summer and Mali so I was excited to try it out but I was really disappointed that I was only one of two people in the restaurant and it still took 55 minutes for a chicken dish to come out.
Food not very tasty but plentiful in quantity. Service was fair but friendly staff. Birthday celebration but we had to do it all.
TERRIBLE FOOD TERRIBLE SERVICE DO NOT eat HEAR ORDERED AT 8:20 food came to table at 9pm whattt ? Ordered appetizer spring rolls they gave me 3 box frozen rolls from target. terrible also ordered my kid fries and received them 30 min later. bill was 65$ ordered snapper fish was old and lamb has mostly bones wow God help us. Oh and joloff rice was extremely stale!
Joloff rice was not as expected very much so overrated the tilapia was overcooked and hard and the waitress was not that sociable I'm not too sure if she was not able to understand English very well. It was my husband's birthday and it was our first time there we did not receive a warm greeting it was early in the week and pretty much empty customer service could have been a little bit more friendly. We will not be dining there ever again and also the menu was a little bit deceiving.
The screen art was great but I didn't get Senegalese style from the food . The Djoul was not good I wish they had more meat in some dishes and the flavor was all the way off I wouldn't go back I just wanted to try something closer but it wasn't worth it
I ordered from them twice and NEVER AGAIN! How can you serve jollof rice at a place called jollof and have it be BLAND! I tried the veggie one since I'm vegan. The first time I ate at the actual restaurant. Thought maybe first time was just an off day but no! The second time I got side of vegetables as well as the veggie rice and again bland and not worth the time (delivery 45-1hr and they are only 5 minute drive away) or amount of money. I can cook better than this restaurant. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. Take your money to BUKA instead just a few minutes down the road. The food quality and service is MUCH better.
Actually, this place gets no stars. After traveling for 2 hours with the sole purpose of eating at this establishment for my birthday, I WAS TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED!! First off, they were closed during posted open times. Therefore, I called to confirm the time and the woman who answered said they were opening at 1pm (Saturday, August 17th). So, though it was already 1:05pm, I decided to wait a few more minutes. I called twice more, no answer. At 1:20pm, I decided to give up on my quest to taste Senegalese cuisine and walked away. The proprietors of this place are grossly unprofessional. To all the people who ate here and wrote favorable reviews, thanks for the time you took out to do so.
I feel like I’m going crazy. This food looks amazing, but if this is the same restaurant that caters Dance Africa, then something is wrong! No joloff rice, and some mayo tasting chopped chicken wrapped in a white flour tortilla. This was the only African cuisine at the festival that I could see, such a disappointment
A bad experience, and I wouldn’t repeat it. The food was not cooked in the African way we know — they completely changed all the dishes. And the worst part is that she added a tip for herself without my knowledge when I was paying. That’s really shameful.
