Samurai Mama Brooklyn Reviews
It's rare to find homemade udon! We learned from a Japanese lady during COVID that this place makes their own udon. Since then we have been coming here regularly. Kind staff, beautiful dining atmosphere and delicious udon! Serving udon cold or hot. Ramen is great too! Highly recommend😍
The food was so good that it’s 5 hours later and we can’t stop talking about our dinner bc the taste is still in our mouths! Two of us had the sushi tacos and are raving about them. The dumplings were delish. Surprisingly, my favorite dish was the pickled vegetables - best pickled vegetables I’ve ever had and beautifully presented. The only dish I wouldn’t have again would be the kabocha - wasn’t as well thought out as the other dishes. The spare ribs were tasty but didn’t have enough meat on them. Def trying the Ramen next time. It looked amazing! And the service was fantastic. We will be back!
Such a great spot. It's one of the few places I keep coming back to in Williamsburg. Their iron tastes very authentic, but my favorite thing to get is the sushi taco sampler. It is fresh and each tastes distinct. Also if you're not too too hungry, try the spicy seafood miso soup. It's slightly smaller than the Udon but it's a perfect pairing for the sushi tacos.
Samurai Mama has amazing ramen! The vegetables and noodles were fresh and delicious. Loved it!
Great great food and ambiance, they even let us bring our dog inside, staff was very friendly, the gyozas are to die for, but honestly everything was delicious, we also had the ramen full on fat which was incredible you can really taste all the different flavors in one spoon. A must try from Williamsburg 🧡
Great food, the service is really appreciated! Must get: ‘Sushi tacos’ shown in pics. Don’t let the name discern you there’s no tortillas we actually found the style really appetizing as it’s not closed like a hand roll and you can see the beautiful fish presented. ‘Seaweed salad’ very gorgeous and bright, never had such fresh seaweed! We liked that you could mix the sauce in to your liking. The fried chicken was okay, perhaps we wanted it a bit more fried? Very tasty however. Skip the shrimp fried gyoza.
This was an awesome experience. First, they sat my wife and I at a giant communal table which I thought was interesting. We had enough space, and I have definitely had less space while eating. The table had the coolest collection of 🌵. We got three rolls which were fresh and delicious, one being the yellowtail belly which I would highly recommend. The rolls came with, get this, soy sauce AND soy sauce pre-mixed with wasabi, and their own ladles. We enjoyed the experience so much that we also got dessert, which was interesting and unique: some kind of matcha mochi with red bean topping. I would recommend this place to anyone!
Like poetry on a plate - both vegetarian and non vegetarian food was exceptional. No notes and highly recommended!!!
Cool vibes and good food. Totally peanut free, and the vegan ramen was solid.
Cozy woody atmosphere, comfortable seating. If you reserve on time you can easily seat a party of 20+ long table style. Great selection of Draft beer and Sake. Awesome service & welcoming vibe.
The food, service and decor are excellent. I had the veggie qyoza as an app and the mushroom avocado sushi that comes with a salad as my main meal. Both were great. My waitress picked up on the fact I was ordering veggie items and warned me that the soup is made with fish stock and offered an extra side salad which I accepted. I plan on bringing my daughter here for lunch.
I had a lovely dinner at Samurai Mama. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful — such a rare pleasure to be able to enjoy a meal without shouting over loud music or crowds. The Japanese food was excellent, especially the udon and gyoza, which were both flavorful and perfectly prepared. A great spot for a relaxed and fair priced diner.
Bathrooms were a little hard to see but that’s really about all the bad that came with it. To start, food was impeccable with the udon. The broth tastes like home and I can tell all the efforts that were put into it. The udon was perfect to the point I was contemplating ordering two. But I ended up getting a bowl of rice to mix in with the broth and it tasted just as good. The food just tasted perfect, I don’t know how else to describe it.
Snowy day in the City - come to Samurai Mama for a warm and cozy meal! Actually visit whether it’s Sakura, Summer or Autumn too! The pork gyoza were fantastic and the shrimp tempura udon made me feel as if I was back in Japan during the winter. I sat at the communal table and was treated to amazing service throughout. Kindness fills the walls of this special place. The roasted green tea was exceptional too. I am enchanted by Samurai Mama — I have made 10 visits to Japan and I am delighted when a US restaurants captures the spirit and hospitality of Japanese cuisine. Samurai Mama captured this Mississippi guy’s heart - it will do the same for you hopefully! ❤️ I will return happily!
Everything I ordered was symphony. Will be coming back. There's a few booths to sit at and a couple of tables, but then you've got the grand LONG table that I was seated at. I thought it was a company party, but it was just a long table that you could be seated at. I didn't know if I needed to ask for a private seat. I was uncomfortable at first, but I got use to sitting with strangers. I even chatted with my neighbor a bit! I firmly believe the food got me out of my comfort zone. Just a heads up. (Pictured: Hello Yellow roll, the regular Mama ramen, Miso soup)
Awesome food, awesome atmosphere, and very friendly staff. The food was all very fairly priced and well sized portions. The sushi taco set was awesome, especially the diced cabbage with yuzu that they were served with. The fried chicken was light and delicious. The black edamame was also great. And did I mention the water! Very clean and crisp tasting. Awesome experience here, must go for a good time and great food.
We just tried this place on DoorDash last night and it was delcious. We had the salmon avocado sushi tacos (delicious) and spicy tuna roll. I loved the spicy tuna roll because it came with whole pieces of tuna rather than crushed. 10/10 and can’t wait to try more of their food options!
Super delicious udon, I didn’t try a lot of menu items because my stomach had been feeling sensitive before I got there but this pork belly udon really helped my stomach feel better. The broth literally healed me fr. The pork belly was so tender it DISSOLVED into the soup I swear. Our waiter was super sweet and constantly checked in on us! I will def have to come back
This spot is a total go-to for me, it's reliably good, easy to walk in to, and has a wonderful atmosphere. I love the communal table in front! I love the Udon, and the gyoza are some of my favorite vegetarian ones in NYC. They have great quality fish and sashimi too.
This place has a phantastic atmosphere and a great food served by pleasant people at the right time, what else can is needed. I will definitely suggest to try their favorite sake, which was incredible, and a chocolate mousse dessert. Portions aren't big, but very flavorful. Price for a meal would range from 30 up to 50$ per person.
Amazing ramen. And super fresh sushi. In a city where this is very common and you can find ramen and or sushi on every other street this place is hands down the best. It has an amazing rustic Western look and feel. And the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. They have the best noodles and some of the freshest sushi I ever had. At unbeatable prices. And the portions are very good.
Perfect spot for a cozy date or a rainy day. They have separate tables for 3+ groups, but usually you seat in a big common table. Great service, very attentive and fast. I find the food top-notch. One of my favorite neighborhood spots. My recos: pork gyoza, any hot udon or ramen. You can’t get it wrong.
What an absolutely incredible spot! I had dinner with my son and his girlfriend and it was so fantastic! The quality of the food was tremendous, the sake was outstanding, and the overall vibe was just terrific. We sat at a communal table which was concerning at first, but turned out to be just fine. My only small issue that I would raise was that the temperature was a tad warm - I’m not sure if that was just this time of year though because it’s the confusing part of spring where you just don’t know whether to turn on the heat or the air conditioning so I get it. I highly highly highly recommended Samurai Mama and will definitely come back.
Samurai Mama is a place that we "happened upon," drawn in by the unique store front and subsequently delighted by its dim lighting and rustic Japanese decor. This place gets an A+ for ambiance. We love sushi and this is good sushi. We also ordered dumplings as an appetizer as well as a mama salad that they forgot to bring, but was fine because I didn't have the room that I thought I had for it. The host/service is incredibly friendly. Bathroom is clean. We really enjoyed the communal seating.
Love this place. Great food, really cool interior. It’s a bit small and can move slow but the food is worth it. Great sushi, really enjoyed the “taco set” which is just a variety of hand rolls but the all the flavors were on point. Even the vegetable rolls had great flavor and texture, some of the best vegetable rolls I’ve had. An easy place to do vegan/vegetarian with the vegetable rolls, miso soup, vegetable gyoza, etc. Their gyoza specifically are fantastic - cooked in cast iron and served with homemade sauces. Highly recommend.
This place is good! Everything was super tasty and filling. Ordered the seaweed salad, veg gyoza, ramen & dessert. Apps were creative and a good amount of food for 2 people. The Mama ramen was spectacular! Broth tasted very fatty and rich, so if you’re looking for light fare this isn’t it. The pork was amazing, I think they may have glazed it with brown sugar or something sweet but it was subtle and not overpowering. Added bonus, they provide fried garlic and white pepper to jazz it up. Mama Anmitsu dessert was fine, not my favorite but the ice cream was very good. I’m hoping to go back and try the Udon dishes. Would highly recommend this spot.
We made reservations ahead of time we arrived early they sat us. Super crowded place it seemed a little bit understaffed but they over delivered on the quality of food it was incredibly delicious. Definitely try as much as you can as they have a lot of good shareable plates and decide for yourself what you’re coming back for. The udon, the sushi tacos and the charashi were by far my favorite dishes.
2022.08 one of my fav rest lately, personal, I guess 2022.04 first time dinner here they have daily sp. I tried the sashimi for 2. Fried vegetables and fried eggplant. 2021.09 Homemade dumpling excellent. Sushi taco is kawaii and oiishi. 2021.08 price is right. Food is gorgeous. You can feel the chef is putting their effort on it. Udon is excellent. My kids give two thumbs up. Soup base is on the light flavor side. Not like the ramen soup base. I ate chirachi, also great. Small bite size, lot of pieces. Fresh washabi.. will come again and try their donburi
It’s a small establishment , so you may be sitting neck to neck with someone else , Which wasn’t a huge deal for me and my husband . I’ve had plenty of ramen and udon experiences, as I’ve also had my fair share in Japan and many places across the globe . There aren’t many places specializing in just udon so my husband was super stoked I was able to find a place like this for our trip in Brooklyn ! And omg , it was delicious ! The texture of the udon was chewy and spot on , and you can tell they know what they are doing by tasting the broth; not overly salted and heavy, but just the right amount of season and umami that’s only achieved by authentic methods ! The waiters are also super helpful as there were so many options we were interested in… they were definitely able to give recommendations that did not disappoint! Would definitely come back again if we’re feeling some legit udon ! Keep up the good work !!
walked in on a snowy day, was able to get seated quickly! ordered ebi tempura udon with an egg and their pork gyoza. loved their gyozas!! but the udon was lacking, not sure if it was because the noodles were off but the broth was alright. service was very kind, always checked in on us and showed us around! would come back and try something else :-).
Great atmosphere and food. Usually not a big fan of fusion so was afraid to order taco sushi, but it was reminiscent of typical handrolls and they did not skimp on originality of flavor. Udon I've definitely had better in midtown, but still was original and close to top notch. The 3 kinds of soy sauce was also a nice touch.
Unique and magical experience here! The layout of the restaurant is so different. Walk in and there's the communal table room. Walk through the long narrow kitchen and you arrive at the individual tables room. Or make a short right and there's a bar/ counter area. Or a little further on the right is another room with a table and there's a tree in the corner too. Lots of wood everywhere - the signs out front, all the tables and chairs. Very strong wood element vibe throughout the restaurant. Service was spectacular, and finally the food. The incredible freaking udon soups. The mushroom udon was like drinking in the forest spirit. The pork udon so good and broth literally made me stronger. The salad, simple and straightforward. Truly great place in all respects
I decided to try this place on noodle day. Delicious food. Quick service. I wish it wasn't quite so expensive for the amount, was expecting a little more meat in my soup. But I cannot find any complaints on quality. Noodles are great. It was pretty filling. I have sensitivity to added preservatives and I didn't have any problems so they surely have a fresh made soup base. They separate the broth from the noodles so you have perfectly cooked and non soggy noodles when you want to eat it. It was about closing when I came in so I got it to go. Plus I was trying to hop on the Revel scooter before midnight... I would definitely love to have dinner in the restaurant. It has a nice ambience and decor.
The sushi here is simply outstanding—beautifully presented, precise, and deeply satisfying. The ambiance is calm and refined, the service warm and attentive without being intrusive, exactly what you want from a Japanese sushi experience. The Nagatoro stood out in particular: rich, flavorful, and delicately plated. Thoughtful touches like offering both spicy soy and regular soy were appreciated. The miso soup was a clear, comforting broth, and the salad was crisp and fresh. Everything felt considered and well executed. Absolutely worth the trip from the Upper East Side, and very much a place I’ll return to.
I been here many times and never disappoints. The food is great and I always bring a friend over when they are craving for their first time udon, ramen or their creative ideas! Now my friend had his first proper udon experience and he really loved it! (He had pork curry udon) Highly recommend the taco sushi and the spicy washugyu bukkake ramen. Now if you love the soup itself more than the food then... this might not be for you as the soup is pour on top of the food but the base is much more concentrated as they mentioned. I have no problem with either and it's actually very tasty. So if you are adventurous and want to try something out of the ordinary this is recommended for you!
loved this place! got the dipping style udon (amazing) and the sushi tacos (amazing). happy hour deal was insane and they even came over before it ended and asked ic we wanted anything else before jt was over. all around a great place with kind people- really cozy.
Vibes are immaculate ✨ I wish more restaurants had low lights and community tables. This made for good people watching while enjoying perfect Udon Curry with friends. The food is always so good—in particular stop in on cold nights or rainy days to warm up within these wooden walls. Groups, family, or date night—this place is it.
Came in for an impromptu dinner date and eating at Samurai Mama was perfect! The dishes were all playfully vibrant in both presentation and taste. We ordered the Fried Shishito Peppers & Brussels Sprouts and the Squash which both tasted delicious. For our entree we got the Kinoko Tsukeji Udon and their special Cold Ramen. The Kinoko Tsukeji udon tasted savory and deep with the dipping aspect making for the perfectly textured bite every time. The special Cold Ramen was refreshing and zesty. For a dad’s night, these two dishes felt balanced and delicious. Can’t wait until next time!
Hidden Gem for Authentic Japanese! This Japanese restaurant was a delightful surprise! From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The chef's attention to detail truly shone through. He even recommended a special cold ramen dish, perfect for a scorching NYC day - it was a visually stunning and refreshing combination of chilled noodles, crisp and colorful vegetables, and a perfectly cooked slice of chashu pork. I paired it with a refreshing Japanese IPA, and the flavors were incredible. Service was top-notch, and I felt genuinely cared for throughout my meal. Highly recommend this place - I'll definitely be back!
Delicious. The service was great. The atmosphere was fantastic. When asking for advice on an order they were happy to give it. We really enjoyed the gyoza. Crispy and flavorful, the condiments on top was amazing with it. The sukiyaki udon? Phenomenal. Highly recommend. Don't sleep on this place!!!
I cannot recommend this place enough. The ingredients are of the highest quality. It is a fairly small menu, but everything they do is incredible. The sushi tacos are wonderful. Every bite is fresh, and extremely flavorful. The garlic fried chicken is also amazing. Everything is light, and clean, while not sacrificing flavor. I need to come back to try every dish. The staff were extremely kind, helpful, and attentive. The interior decor was very nice, cozy and elegant. Great date night spot, and fairly priced too. I highly recommend this place.
A place I always return to! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with an authentic and detail-oriented feel that I really appreciate. All of the udons are amazing- the broths are rich in flavor. The gyozas are delicious, though just a little oily. The garlic fried chicken is always perfectly crispy and flavorful- not too garlicky! It comes with complementary sauces that pair really well.
Have tried this place twice and ordered once! Food is consistently good. The fried chicken 🤤😋 Cocktails are a bit disappointing. To be fair I asked to remove the ice from highball drinks, however, the right thing to do is to chill the drink first then serve is a martini size glass. Right? Isn’t it a common sense? They didn’t do that step so the drink was not cold enough. Next time I’ll try it with ice. The unfiltered sake was delicious!
Great service! I arrived prior than my friends and I was able to get a table before everyone got there. It is not an average japanese, every dish is thought through and everything is delicious! I had the "taco" set and shared some starters: the gyoza, the seaweed salad and a soup. We spent 45$/person with drinks.
Great ramen place located on one of the more busier streets in Williamsburg. It was very busy for a Friday night but we were able to get a table in the street with outside dining. The food was good but the ramen came out warm and not hot all all. It was a bit disappointing but the appetizers were cooked perfectly.
I dont venture out to Williamsburg too much but when I do I love the little trendy places. We stumbled upon this restaurant to get Japanese food. The atmosphere feels welcomed and the ingredients fresh. There uni is to die for. I would not go here to have a full stomach as can be expected at a Japanese place. But very enjoyable
Ordered the signature ramen and the gyoza as well. Gyoza (8 of them) were pretty good, large dumplings served in an iron skillet and arrived fairly quickly. Sauce was a little thick unlike traditional gyoza but flavor was good. Ramen took a long time (over 30 minutes) to arrive due to a kitchen mix-up — I was not the only customer affected. Staff were very polite and apologetic though. Large variety of toppings all put into the ramen, unlike traditional servings which try to keep the same few ingredients; chalked it up to it being an Americanized version of Japanese ramen. Broth was decent and didn’t have any overpowering flavors, although could have been a bit richer. Additional condiments of white pepper and chilis were provided which I don’t think were necessary but which other customers (Westerners, non-Asian) added in generous amounts. Ambience was good and overall vibe was very comfortable and welcoming. Overall — many differences from traditional Japanese ramen but at the same time, a great meal for freezing weather.
Don’t be fooled by its exterior- rusty brown with a Victorian doodles. The food is very Japanese, slightly fusion but dang...u feel so good after slurping down the ramen or udon. I got the ebi tempura udon which has a slight garden herbs flavor but the ebi (prawns) are not just firm but large! My partner got the mama Ramen and boy was that soup flavorful. Highly recommended place. Oh yes, the interior has a huge communal table that covers (almost) the entire room and theme here is wood and dim and romantic at night.
Atmosphere was great; aged dash tofu and mama mojito were extremely delicious; but sushi tacos were VERY mid. I got uni, salmon avocado, and toro. Uni was pretty fresh but slightly bitter; salmon was very ordinary and boarderline mushy/not fresh; toro was very disappointing - it was the driest toro I have had. Sushi rice was pretty good but could use a tad less vinegar. Service was pretty nice. I did not try their famous udon noodles, so this review is mostly based on sushi tacos. All in all, I would recommend here for casual Japanese food but not for their fish/sushi quality.
Very very tasty. I tried cold udon and everything on it was perfect: salmon, broth, caviar, etc. Also had an appetizer and no drinks. Total check for US$ 29 without tip, wich is no cheap, but, well is Williamsburg :/ The place it self is well decorated and the service was good and fast.
Good ramen! Generous portions of noodles with a half an egg! Came with scallions and bamboo shoots. The whole shebang! Very rare to see in ramen shops in NYC. Didn't feel like I was getting nickled and dimed on handfuls of scallions. Tonkotsu Ramen was excellent. Broth was robust and flavorful. Came with scallions, red ginger, bamboo shoots, and half an egg. Like twice the amount of noodles compared to the other ramen places. Excellent bowl of noodles 🍜 by any means. The garlic fried chicken cam out hot and crispy. Garlicky and tender on the inside and super crispy on the outisde. Great to start the meal and generous portions for two!! Had two tuna rolls and were of good quality tuna. Good portion per person if you have a sushi craving. Didn't make a reservation and waited about 35 minutes on a rainy Saturday night. Which was not at all terrible. Sat by the bar in the back which was a tad cramped and stuffy. But again not terrible. Service was okay. Seems a tad short handed from the looks of it. But adequate overall. I personally do not like communal style seating. There was a massive communal style table in the center of the small restaurant and it looked cramped. The bar seats in the back was also a bench and was a bit cramped. Overall great meal, acceptable service, okay atmosphere.
Stumbled in here on a rainy Sunday evening for dinner. Went inside to check out the menu but aroma of the food is what made the decision to stay. Ordered the Brussels sprouts and shishito peppers as a starter, I wish there was more shishitos in it but overall well seasoned. It came with this pink salt that added to the flavor. My friend ordered the speciality tacos for $30 and really seemed to enjoy the dish. It was served with soy sauce and another spicy wasabi soy sauce. The fish looked very fresh and delectable. I ordered the pork belly udon (I think it was $18). Which I found very flavorful and the perfect comfort meal for the rainy night. We also had a wasabi cocktail but we both weren’t big fans of it. The service was very attentive and the food was served promptly. We sat at the community table and although it was a shared table we were able sit comfortably. The atmosphere was not loud and we can have a pleasant conversation. Overall, would come back here again.
I had much higher hopes that what I actually ate. Maybe it was an off night, everything seemed basic and small for the price. Staff were super busy, but not attentive. Might have needed more? The food was just good, not bad, but also not the special that I was expecting to get. The portions were small. The place was loud. I would give it another chance, because my partner said it was really good.
If you have Ramen, Sushi, good music, good drinks and good service all under one roof…well I’m there. Really wanted to give 5 star review for Samurai Mama however the only minor detail holding back is the broth on their original Ramen is a bit thin and lacking that rich deep flavor. Maybe it was just a one time fluke but overall I was very content. Definitely coming back soon to try their own house made Udon.
We got the shrimp tempura udon and the chicken rice bowl. the udon did not taste hand made as advertised, seemingly over cooked and like frozen noodles made at home. The broth was good and the tempura was nice too. The chicken rice bowl was very tasty, although some rice was undercooked.
It was Saturday early lunch time. We were seated at the big table right away. I got the mushrooms Udon and my mom got beef udon. The udon noodles were nothing to write home about but soup had good flavor though it was a bit on the salty side. We got fried chicken for appetizers. It was juicy and up to par with other Japanese restaurant that serves fried chicken. My husband got tempura shrimp over rice and it was okay. The food is a bit expensive comparing to other Udon shops or Japanese restaurant that I have been too. The service was good.
Udon was pretty good, amazing noodles but broth was a bit boring. I'd go back for food except the service is really annoying. They are nice, but there were 3 separate waiters hovering over us, constantly someone refilling your cup that you took 1 sip from, removing something from the table the second you're done. They need to chill out a bit. We felt very hurried.
I didn’t enjoy the vegetarian noodles and udon. The broth lacked any flavor- tasted like water.
