Good Food & excellent Margaritas. Patio is great even on hot days with plenty of shade and the pond waterfall feature adds a nice ambiance. Service is is usually great.
Awesome food and very authentic. I was really impressed by the quality. The customer service and the hostess was very nice as well. I highly recommend this nice little Mexican food restaurant to anyone in the area.
We ordered our meal to go, but it was delicious. The rice and beans we really good. Chef's kiss to how good our food was. Would definitely recommend.
We have motorcycled past this restaurant before and have wanted to stop in and eat there. Finally got a chance and wish we would have stopped before. What a gem to find a place this nice, very good staff and excellent food. The inside is nicely decorated with bright colors and everything is very clean. There is also a big shaded outdoor patio with a fountain. Both our dishes were big, fresh and very flavorful. I would highly recommend stopping in if you are in the area. They also have a full bar.
Sadly, El Rey burned down late last year and it doesn't appear that they'll be able to rebuild--possibly an insurance issue. It will be missed as there aren't many dining options like this in the area. There are two Jilberto's within a few miles, but those are more take-out-focused while you went to El Rey to sit down with friends to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. ETA: According to the owner's reply (below) shortly after I posted, Jilberto's WILL be rebuilt! Many people will be happy to hear this. Response from the owner a day ago We are in the rebuilding process it just takes time. You should start seeing a new building go up in about 6 months.
Great food & very friendly, helpful staff. Food took a long time today because we were there for the after-church rush, but they kept the chips & salsa coming, along with quick drink refills. Sitting outside on the covered patio with the garden & waterfall is lovely!
We were out for country drive with our pup in tow. Stumbled on this place. They had several outdoor tables but that were covered from sun and rain. Service was great. Super friendly! Loved our dog and even brought her a dish of water. Food was good! Even some nonMexican dishes. Burgers, club sandwich, grilled cheese.... Had a great selection of Mexican food. Priced reasonably, casual but quality.
El Rey has the best Cadilliac Margaritas that we have ever had, nothing beats it. The food is good and the waiters are very nice, great place to go for lunch or dinner with friends or a quick bite.
Excellent red enchilada ranchera sauce - the best I've ever had. Excellent, fresh, authentic green sauce. Great chips and salsa. Neat place. Worth the drive.
Great atmosphere inside, outdoor patio seating avaliable. Staff is polite and hospitable whether ordering take out or dining in. Food tastes amazing family and I haven't ordered anything that wasn't great. Highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a great experience and excellent food or drinks.
Amazing food... we love coming here for the specialty dishes, the nice drive through the country, and the occasional Bill Murray encounter. Love these salsas they produce here, too. Love the fountain, too. Excellent all around.
A true "hole in the wall" restaurant. Worth driving to for an excursion to the countryside. Located in beautiful Pauma Valley, El Rey is a local's weekly routine. We go at least once a week. This is good tasting Mexican food along with the home style atmosphere. The staff are either family or loyal to the establishment. They've been there for a long time. The Skinny margarita is a favorite, not as sweet. Salsa too is fresh and of course the food is a choice of standard Mexican food. Who needs a menu, just imagine what you want to eat and tell them. The albundigas soup is a must.
Good old fashioned Mexican restaurant in Pauma Valley. Service is fast and friendly. We eat here about once a month. Nice patio with a gurgling fountain. Pricing is reasonable.
Party of 8. Called ahead. Table was rdy when we arrived. Immediately got our drinks from the bar. Took orders with seperate cks. Food arrived faster than expected. It was delicious. Everyone in the party loved what they ordered & we all knew we would return the next time we're in the area. Customer service was excellent!!!!
My go to Mexican breakfast place that has a full bar! I always get a Bloody Mary with my meal. This place is popular with the local farmers and their chatter. It's quite interesting. A little out of the way on Hwy76 but worth the trip.
The Albondiga soup is the best I've ever had. The rice with my wife's chimichanga plate was so tender it melted in my mouth. The chimichanga had a lot of meat and my wife really enjoyed it. Service was great. This was second time dining here and will definitely go back.
This place is a hidden gem for sure 1st time being on this street working in the area and decided to give it a try. Glad I did. The service and food were great you get chips and salsa with your order both tasty. You can sit indoors or outdoors. The food I had was bomb that means it was great. Go try to yourself next time I’m over this way i will stop again for more.
Great food and drinks. They know how to make a margarita. GG is a great server with a phenomenal attitude. Nice quiet place on a Wednesday. Will return for sure even though it is out of the way for us.
We went here for a late lunch! I love the ambiance of this place. Servers are very attentive and so nice. The food was delicious, they served a soup as well! And omygosh, that was so good! I will recommend this place 👌🏼
Cute Mexican restaurant. Indoor seating and a nice outdoor patio with waterfall. Good and friendly service. The food was excellent! We had the chicken chimichanga and camerones burrito. The chimi was stuffed full of shredded chicken. The burrito had lots of plump, juicy shrimp. We both had iced tea but there is a full bar here. Definitely will be back!!
Craving Mexican food? When in Pauma Valley make sure you stop here. The restaurant is charming, clean, the staff is friendly, and the food is delicious.
Great food Karina great customer service very highly recommended came for my wife's birthday it's a tradition you want great food come to El Rey
Very nice Mexican food, reasonable price. Nice traditional decoration inside. Friendly staff.
Was recommended this place by our Harvest Host and they weren't wrong. Great food and great service.
I have been here several times and it has been great each time. Food is superb. Service is fast and friendly. You cannot go wrong here. Highly recommended.
Delicious food, good drinks, magical atmosphere. A hidden surprise along the road! The patio was the perfect place to grab a bite on a day trip and we were blessed by the presence of a blue bird ❤
This is our "go to" birthday lunch restaurant. The food is always fresh, with daily specials and great margaritas. The atmosphere is casual, and they do not rush you!
Huge portions and service was with a smile. Food was quick and my Cadillac margaritas were strong. Try the Fiesta platter.
Quality Mexican Food, fairly priced, large portions, great atmosphere & service! Perfect margaritas! Highly recommend!

I enjoyed my experience. Great atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor seating. Made the mistake of getting the burger so I can't fairly judge the food. Chips and Salsa tasted pretty good. Margarita was a bit strong on the tequila side, but I think that is my problem not an issue for most :). Probably one of the better restaurants in the area.
The food is really good and the wait staff is very nice and accommodating. The only problem I saw was the hostess did not have her hair tied back. She was in and out of the restaurant area quite often. This is not a good idea to have her hair insecured.
Quaint local Mexican restaurant. The food is typical of what you might find at larger "known name" restaurants. Prices are very reasonable and there is always a daily special. The staff has worked their for many years and if you are a local like I am they will know your name and likes. I love their Cadillac Margaritas! Great chips and salsa served with you meal. Sometimes my service has been slow and the food while good and priced well isn't exactly 5 star cuisine but I still love this local restaurant for a good quality meal at reasonable prices.
Always a go to for good Mexican food. From fried chicken to hamburgers and authentic mex, this is the place. We eat here once a month and it's always on point. My only downfall here is the chips and salsa, it's good but not amazing; too salty and vinegary at times. Other than that, hit this place up. You wont be disappointed!
We love El Rey's. They have great Mexican food and margaritas. We sat outside because we have a 2 yr old which was nice because she could run and not interrupt other tables. Thankfully we went early and there wasn't too many people outside yet. The only bad thing was the flies were horrible. They need more fans.
It's nice to see the same faces everytime. Fast service and caring staff. Many food options and not too pricey. Their flautas and Chile rellenos are excellent. Chips and salsa served while you wait. Freshly made margaritas. Servers are frequently busy so be patient. Prices went up and service down. Tried the $10 Crisp Quesadilla. Save your money..... Their air conditioning needs some help, it is muggy inside.
The food was very good and well priced. The mango margaritas with tajin are delicious. The service for the most part was pretty good. And the atmosphere was very chill. I highly recommend coming here! Especially for the margaritas😁
Very friendly staff! My experience was very pleasant. Enjoyed my meal in a cute outdoor patio seat.
Good chips and salsa, and we both enjoyed our meals. I also love the outdoor patio area.
Very friendly and helpful staff, good food and unique location.
Nice restaurant nestled in the .mountains of Pauma beautiful scenery in the patio dining area food was great at a decent price

The food is average. There was basically no clients, hence service was good. The atmosphere is nice because they have nice little patio where you can decide to eat.
The food was okay, but not great. They had a pretty diverse menu, but nothing terribly exciting. The chips were a bit on the greasy side. The enchiladas suizas were well cooked and had a very nice green salsa. The prices were also a bit high for fairly basic food.
Food was tasty but the service was slower than molasses.. the waitress that sat us down was rude. But quickly changed her tune upon her return.. didnt appreciate that a bit. Especially since we were a party of 10... the waiter was slow.. but in all fairness he was new and the kitchen is at fault for the slow service.
Taco shop food, not much variety on the menu.. Jalapeño poppers where my favorite.. I expected better but was hungry

This is not mexican food except beans, rice and chips. Fajitas sucked- where's the beef little chopped pieces of I don't know, chicken dry no flavor, shrimp ok and a whole platter of peppers and onions. Atmosphere was fly infested making it uncomfortable inside with flies buzzing around. Service superb everyone helping everyone and checking on guests. This place was recommended by others, but I am sorry I won't send anyone here. Too bad it won't be on my list of favorites. Funny everyone there was eating hamburgers, go figure.
Tonight the food was not so good. The Chicken in the Fajitas was dry and tough to chew, seemed over cooked or reheated like a microwave would produce. Texture was more like beef then chicken. Last time we had the Carnitas and again the food was less then satisfactory. Been going to Ray's for years and lately it just isn't the same.
The salsa was good and the waitress was nice, but the food was pretty bad. My soup had a huge chunk of plastic wrap in it. I can tell you, plastic is not a good flavoring.
First of all Bring Your Own fly swatter and don't order the Ortega Burger, it was not edible at all, dried meat, no seasoning, hard smashed bun and expired Ketchup. The Green chili was fairly tolerable tho. Used to eat there all the time about 20 years ago when I worked in Valley Center and food was good. Went back about a year ago and had a bad experience, thought I'd try them again cause there aren't many choices around there. Don't think I'll be going back...... And did I mention the flies?
Never got a chance to order or even get a drink of water after 20 mins😠 The hostess was RUDE! The bus boy was the only person to even acknowledge us while we were there waiting. We use to like to go there, but after this visit we won't be back! To ignore customers is just WRONG! SHAME on you EL REY Restaurant you just lost some good Customers😡
