The Dumb Post Inn Calne Reviews
Visiting for Christmas in nearby Studley and we came twice here for a pre dinner pint. Lovely selection of beer, some interesting whiskies and such a beautiful building. By far one of the nicest pubs in the area, beautiful building and a beautiful setting overlooking countryside for miles. We've been here in Summer too for their wonderful beer garden.
Absolutely gorgeous pub! Came here for my birthday meal in August. I was pleasantly suprised by this place -the atmosphere and the view. Food was soo tasty! Steak is to die for!On the higher end of price but we don't mind paying that for the amazing quality. My partner rang when making the booking to let them know it was my birthday meal. He asked if I could please get a slice of cake after the meal to sing happy birthday. On the day of the meal he reminded the lady again thay it was my birthday. After the meal, nothing came and we just got the bill. My partner was a bit disappointed that no one remembered about the cake after he mentioned it twice. I had an amazing time but I feel like staff should have a bit more communication, especially when it comes to an event or memorable occasion mentioned.
A fabulous character pub, we arrived at 6pm without a booking, we were shown a table and ordered 2 drinks and main meals, the duck and the guinea fowl both of which were 10/10, we would definitely recommend a visit. Total £68.50 plus £7 tip.
A quiet Monday night meal, No not at the Dumb Post, nearly every table full with people eating, that tells you the quality of the food that's served. Staff very friendly and welcoming
Booked for table of 5 (including child with high chair). Arrived, shown straight to table, high chair already there and ready. Drinks order taken promptly, and given good time to decide on food orders. Wait for food 15-25 mins. Food arrived hot and freshly plated. I ordered the Sirloin of beef, which today had been changed to Rib of beef instead, which didn’t matter, as it was perfectly cooked. Food tasted incredible. Ordered one of each of the sides on the Sunday menu, and will absolutely highly recommend the Parmesan and Leek gratin! Service was incredible, unfortunately cannot name the lovely lady who took care of us as I’ve forgotten her name, oops!
Been a regular eater here for years and it never disappoints. Stopped for a pre Christmas meal with friends, we all felt the food had gone up another notch! Had the ragu which was on point. Only niggle was it seemed a little short on staff so drinks and water took ages. Great local vibe and super friendly. Also worth a visit in the summer as the views are mega.
Hidden Gem just outside Calne we walk across the fields and encourage the kids by promising chips and a drink. Fantastic pub lively views great service.
We love the The Dumb Post Inn, the staff are great and the setting is wow. A beautiful country pub with great views over to the White Horse and beyond, it is just one of those places we love to visit every so often. We had lunch today, vegetarian burgers and a drink on the beautiful and peaceful terrace with panoramic views over the Cherhill and beyond, reminds us of parts of France, perfect thanks so much. If you are in the area for a Sunday roast you have to go here! The meat and vegetables are all grown by local farmers so supporting Uk farmers which is amazing and you can see where your food came from. They also put on the back of the menu which farm the products came from which is an amazing detail and one of the reasons we keep on coming back. The food itself is the best roast I’ve ever had no matter if it’s the lamb, beef, pork or even the chicken roast. It also comes with a bowl of veggies on the side and the whole meal is a very generous portion that you want to strive to eat very last bite as it all tastes so good. The staff are always so kind and friendly and give it a lovely local feel even to those visiting. It’s a great pub as well for views over the rolling hills and inside is equally as charming.
We've found our new favourite place to eat! We called ahead on a Monday evening to see if they could accommodate four adults, a baby and two dogs. When we arrived we were shown to our table and drinks promptly arrived. My wife cannot currently have dairy, soya and egg and eating out lately has been a bit tricky. Our waitress went to speak to the chef and returned with the menu, with ticks and amendments so we could clearly see what she could have (this included making a soup from scratch, and meant that she could choose from about 80% of the menu). We were very grateful that they were so accommodating. Service throughout the evening was attentive and friendly. The food was fab! Some excellently constructed, balanced and flavourful dishes on the Al a carte and some firm favourites on the 'Pub Classics' menu. We are already planning our return visit and we will be recommending The Dumb Post to anyone that asks.
Best roast I’ve had in a long time, amazing service and stunning views. We were a table of 10 and non of us could fault anything! 10/10
This was our first visit back after quite a few years absence, on a particularly cold but bright and sunny day.. We were met with a warm welcome and wow, it is fair to say, the pub has been transformed...... There's even heating in the gents! Joking aside, terrific food, great service, wonderful setting, even managed to bump in to some old friends. We definitely won't be leaving it long before a return visit. Before and after photos!
Worth a visit for the views and food! Excellent service too, lovely staff. We'll be back! Beautiful pub. Clean and full of character.
Went for Sunday lunch with friends, absolutely lovely, we were welcomed by friendly staff, the food was delicious, the view is absolutely beautiful! We even got a friendly hello from Oscar the parrot. What a find. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We were going on a cycle in the countryside and, lo and behold, we came across this hidden gem. The view from the pub garden is spectacular and there is such a relaxing atmosphere. We shall definitely be returning!
Probably the nicest pub we have ever stumbled across. The staff are really nice and engaging and the drinks are good and very reasonable in price. We had been expecting it to be much pricier than it was given the quality of the pub and the accompanying view. Which is also incredible. The food we had today, the mixed roast, was amazing, all five of us demolished our meals and cleaned our plates, portion sizes were perfect, enough to truly fill you up without leaving you bloated. Wonderful food. Wonderful service and a wonderful evening all around.
I had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant recently, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The fillet steak with béarnaise sauce was simply outstanding, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Each bite was a culinary delight that left me craving more. As if that wasn't enough, the dessert was a decadent chocolate brownie that was nothing short of mouthwatering. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance added to the overall charm of the place. I can't wait to return and indulge in another delightful meal! Highly recommended for anyone looking for a dining experience that exceeds expectations.
Very friendly, outstanding food, best Guinness outside of Ireland and awesome views. Worth ducking off the main road to eat and drink here. We will return.
Arrived with my family and had an amazing experience from the lovely food with delicious gravy and excellent customer service would definitely come here again and would recommend. Very accommodating and friendly
Lovely mixed grill. Some of the waiting staff when serving didnt realise what the meal came with. I had to ask for the vegetables and side of chips then had to wait a small while for these to be brought out but not too long, so was fine. Overall, it's a really lovely place to eat and drink but not sure on the male and female only glasses. This seems a bit out of touch with the times with gender equality. The sunday dinner is also very nice and would recommend.
On a lovely day, it was so nice to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful views. There were 10 in our party, yet this was no problem to them with the food coming out promptly despite it being busy. We were so well looked after by Tilly, and we will be visiting this fab pub again in the near future.
Lovely pub surrounded by beautiful scenery. The food and service were both excellent. We will be back.
Really lovely place. Walked to it from Chippenham, could easily walk to it from Calne too I reckon. The views from the garden are great, you can make out a white horse on a hill across the valley so long as the tree between here and there doesn't have leaves on it. Only had drinks which were lovely and not very expensive.
The only downside is on payment you are given the bill with different tip opportunities! I will not go to places now that do this. My local garage asks for money for charity yes or no. This is something I don’t like I will give money for good service or to charities but it must be my choice not dictated.
Always a great stop - this time for a wedding reception. The food served was lovely, the staff are really helpful as well.
Held my mum's wake here. A variety of different options with food and very reasonable. They were so accommodating and supportive. Absolutely fabulous food and staff. I could not have asked for more.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Dumb Post is an absolute gem! From the moment you step inside, you’re welcomed by genuinely friendly staff who go above and beyond to make you feel at home. The service is always spot-on—attentive, professional, and warm without ever being overbearing. The atmosphere is just incredible: a perfect balance of cozy charm and lively buzz that makes it equally great for a relaxed family meal, a drink with friends, or even a special occasion. And the food—wow! Every dish is beautifully prepared, bursting with flavour, and clearly made with care. From classic pub favourites to more refined plates, the menu has something for everyone, and the quality is consistently outstanding. It’s the kind of place where you can tell the kitchen takes real pride in what they serve. One of the real highlights that sets The Dumb Post apart is their 0% IPA on draft. It’s such a thoughtful and modern touch, giving those who prefer alcohol-free options the chance to enjoy a proper pint without compromise—something you won’t find in many pubs. Overall, The Dumb Post nails it on every level: friendly faces, fantastic food, a welcoming atmosphere, and great drinks. Highly recommended—this is easily one of the best pubs around!!!!
This is a buzzing rural pub with delicious food and a genuinely warm welcome! We had a brilliant steak night here and couldn’t have been looked after better. Thank you
Great tasting food with generous portions at a decent price. Really friendly staff, very welcoming. Service was very quick too
Popped in for a drink, and they managed to fit us in for Sunday lunch despite being fully booked. We even got our order in very quickly. Table service was 10/10.
Simply amazing! Booked a meal here whilst staying nearby in the Cotswolds. You can definitely tell the food is locally sourced and everything is served fresh. Me and my partner both went for the steak (which was to die for!) a side of and fresh vegetables. Prices were very fair and staff are all very welcoming and friendly. Would highly recommend visiting, even if its just for drinks to admire the gorgeous view 😍 Also the homemade BBQ sauce was the best ive ever tried!
First visit for me On Valentine’s Day just gone , me and my partner went to the dumb post inn for a lovely 3 course meal, honestly each course was just as good as the others , such good quality food ,service and atmosphere! 🥩🍷🍻, cannot recommend it enough , I will 100% be coming back in the future. Also the view from the pub itself is amazing in the garden area , they also have an amazing tent/canopy area that has a real nice vibe to it 👌🏽. Overall great experience and definitely recommend to anyone that is thinking of going 👍🏼.
Sunday 15th Feb 2026, first visit here aftera Google lookup of good pubs in north Wiltshire. Wow, what a find. I was attracted here by the farm to fork policy using locally sourced produce. The Sunday roast (beef) was absolutely excellent. Very generous portions. The horse radish blows you head off :) again excellent. Service top notch. V friendly staff. We will be back. Recommended - but book ahead Thank Dumb Post Inn.
The Dumb Post Inn gave us a warm welcome. We celebrated our Son's Valentine Birthday here. Great service, good food and excellent value for money. Stunning views! Thank you !
We phoned last minute during Twixmas and thankfully the lovely Tina answered our call! She was able to manage a table for the 3 of us & we were so warmly welcomed by Tina & her staff upon our arrival. Service was excellent & the food was farm to table fresh & cooked beautifully. Loved the board detailing where all the meats & produce were locally sourced from! We felt so relaxed & enjoyed the festive & cosy atmosphere, the brilliant food & the lovely Tina!!! Thank you so much!!
We had a fantastic meal here for my birthday. It was the first time we'd been. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Food was delicious. And they made a special effort to bring a candle out on my dessert. The pub joined in singing happy birthday. Will definitely be back. Thank you! 😊 Made my birthday very special.
Went to The Dumb Post today for a Birthday meal. Wow, it was amazing from start to finish. The pub was very inviting, lovely atmosphere. Firstly may I say thank you to Lauren, our waitress who was sensational. She was very attentive, informative, very polite and friendly. The food was fabulous, very tasty. Please try this place, you won’t be disappointed!! See you soon 🙂
Gorgeous lunch today at the Dumb Post. Our food was beautifully presented, cooked perfectly and really tasty. Harriet the waitress was super busy but still managed to keep everything running smoothly and offer good service. Great atmosphere for a Monday lunch time and a wonderful place to sit and admire the lovely views from the window. We look forward to returning soon.
We went to this pub for a family birthday, we pre ordered the food, which made it very easy on arrival. We had a large table in a quiet part of the pub. The only downside was when the kitchen door opened there was a cold rush of air. The staff were very friendly and spoke to us throughout the meal. The food came out quite fast and the portions were quite large. The meat was well cooked, I had the mixed roast, the chicken was particularly good. There was a good selection of vegetables. Pudding was fantastic, the sorbet was very delicious, it was a very tasty combination.
I recently photographed a wedding at The Dumb Post Inn and was blown away by how gorgeous the setting is! Stunning scenery, a warm atmosphere, and such a lovely backdrop and vibe for a wedding. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout the day, which made things run smoothly. The only downside was that I was refused any food while working, which was a little disappointing during such a long day on site. Other than that, it’s a gorgeous venue and a pleasure to photograph and I do hope to return - for business or pleasure!
Overall, a nice experience and good tasting food. We had booked a table before hand and had to preorder. We were sat down early and food came out quickly. The mixed meat roast was good, especially the beef and the roast potatoes. We were told they had ran out of parsnips and so would get extra potatoes however the portion given, in my opinion, was still small (see picture). The service was quick and generally attentive. We did need to ask for the sauce options as none were given, and when the bill came it was wrong, and still wrong after the first correction. There is a limited amount of parking (we were fine, but it was quiet when we visited). The views over the hills were nice and we would go again.
Pie of the day (turkey, bacon and leek) made by the rich gravy😍! The fish and chips was rated highly as well. The Christmas pudding was disappointing (gritty) and the "brandy butter" was a poor attempt...no brandy, just tasted like whipped marg😵💫
Countryside location with amazing views over the surrounding countryside, this pub has recently been taken over. Service today a little slow but very busy, very good food we had ring sausage mash and fresh vegetables and homemade lasagne with salad garnish and garlic bread. Both were very well presented and were very tasty. Sweets were also good, two lunchtime courses for under £12 good value for money
Good wine list and some interesting menu options. My choice of the venison was almost really good! It was a shame that the rosemary was just a little overpowering; half the amount and it might have resembled a Masterchef offering :o)
My husbands birthday, recently moved to Calne so recommended by locals Main lamb dish good, desert we both ordered the pannacotta. Oh dear solid, too much gelatin, no flavour at all. Wine good and service great.
I would definitely recommend. We stopped off when travelling west. The location is beautiful- the views are absolutely stunning. A very friendly welcome - they were accommodating as we had to change the time due to traffic. I loved how the food was locally sourced and the presentation was lovely. The focaccia was really tasty and i would recommend!! The turkey meal was very nice but the gravy / sauce or something was too sweet. And for me the veg wasnt very hot. The sorbet had a good flavour but had a strange icy texture which wasnt to my liking. At the end of the meal our waiter seemed to vanish but no real issue - it was great to see a place so busy! I would like to go back and try something from their regular menu.
Seen the reviews and set in a lovely area but sunday lunch was a disappointment. The parsnip was huge and under cooked gravy was very salty and where put on a table in main walk area and had people knocking into chair all the time asked if we could be moved and was told no free tables.
It's such a shame as reviews are quite good. The lamb was tasty but wouldn't be enough to feed a small child, and this was £27. I swapped my fries for seasonal veg with my steak. but it was unseasoned boiled broccoli and kale, which was bland and boring. Overall, it was very disappointing 😞
So disappointed, Sunday lunch we both had roast lamb couple of slices of lamb, soggy potatoes and parsnip ,..Thin gravy we cut our losses and had dessert in a near by pub and we were both still hungry! as we wanted to go as its in walking distance and has two rosette .. The hunts still on for a nice Sunday lunch !
We were really looking forward to our visit for Valentine's day, as the dishes were beautifully described in the menu and on the website. Unfortunately, the food we received did not fully match those descriptions, which was quite disappointing. In addition, the menu and website stated that a complimentary dessert would be served at the end of the meal. However, this was not provided, and no explanation was given. Overall, the experience did not meet our expectations based on what was advertised. We hope this feedback will be taken into consideration to improve consistency between the menu descriptions and the actual service.
