The Banshee Chico Reviews
The workers where soooooo nice and the food aaahhhh so good
Fantastic comfort food, great tap list and friendly staff. You might have to wait to sit, but that's kinda why it's good. The grilled cheese and tomato soup is the most underrated item on the menu, especially on a rainy day.
Excellent food. Their mac & cheese should be a national institution, and I don't even eat public-comsumption mac & cheese! The beverage selection alone is worth coming in, but this is some of the best food in Chico! Not best "bar food" in Chico, but literally just some of the best food in town. Go. Eat. Drink. Thank me later.
Not young enough to use the term, but hey here it goes...this place is a vibe. My vibe for sure. Love the atmosphere, super friendly staff, and to top it all off...actual unique dishes. Specifically speaking the French dip that is a Banh Mi with a Pho broth for dipping. Game changer! Loved it. Partner loved their Mac and cheese as well.
I like this place. Great food, big selection of liquor and tap beer, and the bartenders are very attentive. Classic Chico tall ceilings and the best mac and cheese. Guy Feiri even chowed down here. Class without pompous, service with speed.
If you want to get cocktails and beers in a pub setting in Chico but don't want to experience the rowdy party-atmosphere in so many of the other bars, this is the place. This place is more for the graduate students in compared to the undergrads, to use a fitting college-analogy. The food is excellent and I always had a great time here getting beers with friends. This was my go-to when I lived in Chico.
Fun, fun, fun! This is a classic Chico staple now! It has a dark and clean vibe with a buttload of drinks and some.of the yummiest food in the 530 plus they do not skimp on portions! The staff is all super friendly and helpful and you are guaranteed to leave full, hydrated, and happy! Definitely a must go to for downtown Chico!!
Best food, atmosphere, drinks and great spot to watch a game
The Banshee is always the best. There's an amazing bartender now that is so lovely and helpful I just have to call her out (even though I sadly neglected to get her name). I'm a new mom and haven't gotten out much lately, but she served me my first drink a few months after birth. She patiently helped me figure out what I could eat when my baby was facing some food issues, and she even remembered my drink order when I came in again. Banshee has always had the best food, but adding in this amazing service just makes it the obvious choice any time I'm going out. Thanks for helping a new momma feel like a grown up again!
Banshee. Classic downtown Chico. Great food, fun, drinks!
Love this place!! It's size is bitter-sweet (more sweet than bitter.) This is one of my favorite Bar/Restaurants in Chico. This is primarily because it is a great bar; with great food. I personally recommend the Mac-n-Cheese. I get grief from colleagues and friends because of how much I order it. As a bar, they have a great beer selection, and full service bar. You can belly-up, sit down, or just stand and converse (depending on the time of year/day... standing may be the only option... if you know Chico... you know this is expected.) I do wish it were just a little bit bigger, but it may be a blessing in disguise that it isn't... I don't need to have that much Mac-n-Cheese.
Aa I live out of town I haven't had the chance to grab something to eat here, although the menu looks fantastic. Usually, I just drop in for a drink or two. The place is great and always lively. The staff and bartenders are always nice and especially patient with us customers. Definitely recommend.
Great place. Everything we had was delicious. We had the California burger, breakfast tacos, the brisket pho-dip, pastrami bomb deluxe and pork ban-mi tacos oh and the garlic fries as an appetizer. Like I said everything was delicious. The staff was very friendly and excellent with any questions we had along with quick service. Would definitely eat here again the next time we get down that direction.
Food arrived quickly and was perfectly cooked.
Great atmosphere! The food I had was also pretty tasty (banh mi tacos). Menu isn't large but it's simple and diverse enough. Ordered three dishes (garlic parm fries, banh mi tacos and mac and cheese) between two of us. I'd rate each one 4/5. Service was great also!
The food here is absolutely amazing. I have never been disappointed. Definitely recommend the black and blu burger and Mac n cheese with added bacon and Jalapeños!! Great service, the staff is very friendly and welcoming. If you've never been you must know that the restaurant is in a bar. Don't be intimidated when walking in. You can order at the bar or sit down at a table to order. If you're interested in watching any sport games they have multiple large flat screen tvs displayed. 10/10 recommended.
Always a good place to enjoy a meal that you can’t make at home. When passing through Chico, I make sure to stop in and have some Pho and sometimes a Lemon Drop afterwards. It’s a little bit noisy and dark inside but one of my favorite restaurants.
Very much a pub. The food is authentic. Friend of mine lived in Philly and swears this is the only place outside Philly he's had an authentic cheese steak. This is a place for grown up dates as it's pretty noisy and not designed for kids. Only downside being it's on the smaller side and pretty popular, so seating can be hard to come by. Staff is super friendly and down to earth.
Great service, wings off the hook, and going back tonight.
Stopped by when visiting family and I gotta say the service and food is amazing! Will be back when I visit again!
Food is always amazing here, the Mac and cheese is definitely the best in Northern California. They have vegetarian and vegan plates as well. The service is always friendly and helpful even when it’s really busy they try their best to accommodate you. The bartenders are quick and make solid drinks, definitely recommend this place to anyone.
I had to ask, upon entering, if The Banshee served lunch. My first thought was that it appears to be a bar for the most part. My wife and I were immediately, graciously seated by the front windows, and assured we had come to the place we had read the great reviews about. Long story short, we found a local dining treasure that was hidden to us until now. The Tuna Melt, Ceasar Salad, and California Burger were amazing. The service and drinks were excellent as well.
The best grilled cheese w tomato soup I've had in my life. That parmesan skirt is really something else! My first time experiencing it I was sitting at the bar alone, and I'm pretty sure my vocal responses to the deliciousness creeped out the people on either side if me. Edit: the grilled cheese is so good that I came here for it on my birthday eve. Photo evidence uploaded .
Loved the 90's music. One of the best burgers I had in sometime but the Mac and Cheese made me cry and will have to slap my Mother for being so inadequate as a cook. Damn that was good!
The Banshee is a great downtown Chico bar and restaurant experience. It's a bar atmosphere, near the university with foot traffic you'll find a mix of patrons from students to white and blue collar, giving this place a kind of charm. It can be very loud when busy. Smallish menu, great food, healthy portions, many beers on tap, mixed drinks etc. Staff is great.
The Pho is the best on the planet bar none. I don’t care that the service sometimes can be slow or even a bit rude. The pho is like that Seinfeld soup Nazi episode. Yeh it’s that good folks. So have a couple beers and chill out you’ll get your food and it’s dang good.
Yum! What a great dinner and fabulous beer selection. I love a good sour beer and they had a mango lime sour that was perfect. Food portions are large so bring an empty stomach and large appetite. Garlic fries, Ceasar salad, burger, and chicken Philly were all delicious! Atmosphere was fun and service was top notch! Reminded us of the pubs we visited in Ireland.
Ohhh this place has the best brisket sandwich. The vibes is great also. Definitely recommend.
Fabulous pub atmosphere. Great fish &chips, with a Guinness, can't be beat!!
The food is always outstanding! The atmosphere was good but a little bit loud for me. And there is no parking
Delicious food. Great bar 🍸. Just know the food is pricey, but worth it
I absolutely love this place. I get the mac and cheese with bacon, my girlfriend gets the BOJ burger and we share garlic fries, and everything is always delicious. They also do a good job of rotating out drinks on their cocktail menu. My girlfriend has been able to try something new just about every time we've gone. Can't recommend this place enough.
Can't beat the seasonal brisket pho! Hands down best tasting pho during this time of year! Grilled cheese and tomato soup was also superb!
Banshees is known for their mac and cheese, Mushroom, jalapeno and bacon. I never really liked mac and cheese but they made me a believer. It's a must try.
A local favorite. GREAT FOOD. Wide variety. Burgers are big and juicy, Philly cheesesteak super tasty. Big beer selection. Very friendly service.
Amazing food and great service and ice cold beer. Atmosphere was awesome as well will definitely be going back. Servings are huge two people can easily split.
Stopped in for a quick apatizer and a beer. They had a better selection of draft beers than a lot of places. I ordered a Great White and the Honey hot smoked wings with blu cheese. The food came quick and hot! In terms of spicy, they were not spicy at all, so if you're looking for a spicy wing you may want to try the buffalo sauce (I haven't tried it, I just assume it will have more kick). However, I was not disappointed! The honey glaze was excellent, not too sticky, sweet, and savory. The smokeyness of the chicken really came through, giving a full body blend of smokey and sweet that I loved. The chicken was cooked perfectly, hot and juicy! I will definitely go back to try more of their dishes. They have some interesting lunch combos that come with I think an entree a shot and a beer. The food is good enough that I would come here even if I wasn't going to drink.
Atmosphere was lively but not overwhelming, music playing but not so loud you can't think or have to yell at each other. The service was fantastic, personable and friendly and made sure we were happy. The food was amazing, large portions, everyone was impressed by the food and we are very picky when we order out because it can be expensive. The price is about what you'd expect for dining out and so many times I've paid $20 for a meal I've been disappointed in but this was NOT the case, money for actual quality. You won't be disappointed 👌
Just amazing!! Love that there is options but it’s not a huge menu. Fish tacos, Mac n cheese and wings hit the spot!! Was wanting to try the pho but it’s not available during the summer. Our server was sweet and it was great that you could seat yourself. The atmosphere was nice, could make for a great date night, spot to hang with friends or wanting to grab a drink!
Food service is excellent! Mac-N-Cheese is sinfully fu-king awesome! Both Cajun & Garlic fries are fu-king rad! Atmosphere is great! The pho French dip is out of this world awesome, the duck fat fries are delicious, this restaurant was also featured on Guy Fieri's Diners Drive-Ins and Dives it's a must-try! Currently they have indoor and outdoor seating and the duck fat fries are no longer on their menu but you can get them at B-street Public around the corner. I think same owner.
This place is hands down best food that you will find at any bar in Chico. They use quality ingredients and have a great menu that is simple. The menu options are all delicious, and the cooks that work here seem to have a culture amongst themselves. If you are traveling through and visiting downtown, you owe it to yourself to drop by this establishment and try them out.
I visited for the first time today. The food was really good. The fries were so crispy and perfect, i usually don’t like steak fries that much because they are soft but I loved these. The fish tacos that my friend ordered also looked amazing. We wanted to go for the pho but they happened to be out of it. I still really enjoyed what I ordered.
The Aussie Burger is the best burger I've had in a long time! Patty was seasoned/cooked perfectly, fried egg ✔️ cheddar cheese ✔️bacon✔️bun is delish✔️ and I added on the pickled beets root✔️ and skinny sliced red onion ✔️... Ate the pickles on the side 😁. Add to it the duck fat fries and it was a glorious meal! Have never had a bad meal here. Great beer selection and great pub vibe.
Nice small bar for a drink and even better food. When it’s your first time experiencing the Banshee for food, don’t miss out on the “Pho”rench Dip sandwich. The flavors are perfect brisket very tender and always consistent. Never too busy ! Recommended!!
Excellent beer selection. Great food with very substantial portions. Good set of rotators! Often hard to find seating at peak hours so I recommend a lunch time visit. Get their pork belly tacos when available or if you like wings, their thai chili wings are amazing. They're spicy but not as hot as you'd expect. More sweet. Great food.
Beer selection is great and the food is great quality. I'm not a fan of steak fries but they serve the fries crunchy and that's the only way I want them now.
In the back we had to order from the bar because the waitress was late. No biggie. We ordered the duck fat fried French fries which were awesome. Then we ordered 3 pork tacos. 1st off they were huge and I wasn't expecting that. 2nd they had a kick. A spicy kick. I must say "damn they were good". My girlfriend had the grilled cheese and tomato soup. It was covered in grilled skirt cheese. Very nice touch as I munched on the skirt cheese. Add 2 beers and 2 glasses of wine and it was a grand total of 70 bucks. It was an overall success!!!
Delicious food! It's always tough to get a table here and they don't take reservations. The waitress told me it's a good idea to send someone from your group down 20 minutes early to get tables. Overall the service is good, food is amazing, drinks are good. They always have games on all the tvs. Bathrooms are clean. Love this place.
Very good food! I had the fish tacos I should have just ordered one they are big. My niece had the mac and cheese it was delicious. My wife had a chicken or turkey pesto sandwich that was also very good. The fries were the best I've had in ages. The Ice-T was very good too. The service was fine. Next time I'm in Chico and need lunch I would definitely go back
Banshee might be my new favorite pub in Chico. The food was excellent with good portions. Their bacon onion jam burger was one of the best I have had. I have heard their Mac N Cheese is also delicious, but I haven't tried that yet - maybe next time. They had a good selection of beer on tap, although the chalkboard they used to display their beer menu was almost unreadable due to the poor lighting. The staff was friendly and attentive and offered drink suggestions and samples. Their isn't a lot of seating so you may have to wait for a table if you go at a peak time, but its worth the wait.
Best Mac n cheese in town.. cool service and prices are great for the quality of food.
Way better food than l would expect at a sports bar. It is very loud, though. Don't think background music is necessary. Tables are really close together. The back area to get away from the bar seems like Siberia.
I love this place, but I was overcharged on January 31st. There is no phone number on the website. Can someone reply and help resolve this situation?
We came to The Banshee last night for lunch/dinner. While the food itself was excellent, particularly the California burger, the service we received from Joe Z. significantly detracted from our overall experience. It took a considerable amount of time for him to take our order, even though he passed by our table multiple times. When he finally did approach us, his demeanor was dismissive and impatient. Specifically, when my mom politely asked about cheese recommendations for my younger sister, who has picky eating habits, Joe Z. responded with an exasperated sigh and did not answer the question. Throughout our interaction, his overall attitude was unprofessional and made us feel like an inconvenience. I understand that servers can have busy nights, but a basic level of courtesy and attentiveness is expected. Joe Z.'s behavior did not reflect the standards I would expect from The Banshee.
Got parking right in front. Score! I was there with 3 friends and we were able to snag 2 tables side-by-side at 11:30 am. Each table serves 2. There wasn't a lot of seating in the area where we ate. I don't know if there is outside seating in the back. I asked for iced tea. The server came back with a glass not quite 2/3 full. They were out and that was it. There wouldn't be more. Odd to be out of iced tea in Chico in the summer, but I guess the assumption was that most of the customers drink beer from what looks like a large assortment of brews. That's OK, what about coffee? No, we don't do coffee. Water it was for all of us. I ordered the "Braised Brisket Pho-Rench Dip", as did one of my companions. Another ordered a Quesadilla. The food arrived fairly quickly and we were served by at least 3 different people to ensure that the food arrived at the same time for all of us. I appreciated that. The food was delicious, with half a sandwich to take home. Other menu items sound good for future visits. I'm told their Mac and Cheese is really good. The server could have been better. I had to think about it before I came to that conclusion. For example, at the end of our meal, I realized that all of our water glasses were empty. I don't recall being offered additional water. I can't remember for sure if our server checked on us during the meal, but I didn't leave with the feeling that our server had been attentive. Good food, meh service.
Food was fantastic and learned about it through Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Biggest complaint was the way you order food, you have to go up to the bar for both food and drinks. It is really awkward cause there isn't really a designated spot to order so you have to find a gap in the bar, you also have to seat yourself and if you wanted more food or anything you have to go back to the bar. It is really awkward to stand waiting for a bartender to order through. The food is awesome and the people are nice but there is no real reason why there can't be a traditional waitress, it is never explained. Again, loved the place but it was just an odd experience.
Mac and cheese is great. But we were there before the crowd.....4:30 and it still felt tight in there, cramped with very few people in there and the service was pretty bad. I wasn't sure for a while if we were supposed to order before we sat down until we asked the waiter who was ignoring us.
We walked in and went to the bar to grab a menu. The waitress stopped by took out order and brought our drinks. Shortly after my girlfriend got her salad and that was it. We waited an hour before the waitress stopped by again to ask how the meal was. We told her we got the salad and nothing else. She was confused, but figured out the lost our ticket. It took almost 40 more minutes to get our food. The stuff was very apologetic. They even gave us 50% off our meal. Dispute the initial service being poor, the food was amazing, and the portion was far bigger than I expected. It seems ordering a half sandwich is the way to go. Most people who ordered a full sandwich took the second half to go.
The food was really expensive. $18.50 for a hamburger and an additional $4.00 for French fries and it was just a burger, nothing special. The fish tacos were good, but nothing special and overpriced for what you get. Prices have gone to the point of ridiculous all over, I get it, but some places serve quality and at least I feel like it was worth it.
Last Sunday evening… Female bartender edgy with plenty of attitude and awkward annoyed blank stares when taking orders. Not nice. Amazingly though, with her friends at the bar chatting and laughing seemed like a whole different person. First time here. I came for the smoked wings which were great. Other male bartender super nice with friendly demeanor. I guess if you are a regular you are treated differently. Stopped here on a road trip back from Lassen.
My friend liked her vegan burger but the atmosphere wasn’t the best. Music was way too loud- could not have a conversation :( Lighting was really dark and mostly red lol. It felt like a wanna-be goth place. Also they had no coffee :( our waitress was nice but she didn’t check in on us more than once in the 1 hour. I would have liked my water refilled at least once.
The food was different, but still good. Had the Mac and Cheese with mushrooms and some fries. Or, should I say I had that with my order of salt... Service was good and I walked in right as they were opening. I ordered take out and it took a while, but it came out hot and fresh. Atmosphere was very noisy for 11am, but it is a bar.
I ordered Two pork tacos without mayo spice sauce they had to take them back twice to make without sauce, the pork tasted as if it had water. Suggestion carnitas would be better for this dish. My husband ordered the Philly sandwich and it took a long time. Their fries were great and the dining area comfortable and nice.
Sad to say that the one thing I liked about this place, the fries, are no longer a reason to go here. Service is spotty, always had been, and now the food is just “ok” and certainly not really appropriate for the cost - probably not going back
Recent update December 2025: It seems the kitchen is supposed to close at 11pm but I'd tried to find out if this was the case before going in and couldn't find any kitchen hrs anywhere online (normally this would be posted on the menu in at least one of the pics, but since they have old menus still viewable on their Google maps, it appears the kitchen would still be cooking later into the evening with just a smaller menu). So when I went in the bartender gave me hella attitude, dawdled a lot before taking my order, and even almost forgot the half of it that included a beer, so I guess at least I know he didn't tell me no just to get my drink order. He even loudly told the cook that he likes them more than me in FRONT of me. I'd much rather be told the kitchen is closed and would gladly go elsewhere if the alternative is to be treated like that. Maybe it's just been a rough day for him but it's literally the end of finals week and I'm just tryna chill and get a fat juicy burger. I came here instead of the Bear so I could eat good local meat. Previous review: They have really good food but the sound management is incredibly bad and the noise is very harsh on the ears. The clattery kitchen noises come through very loud and clear, voices bounce around super loudly, and the music can barely compete. Way too loud even when they're slow. They really need some sound dampening tiles or something, but maybe they like it noisy so that people don't get too comfortable and hang out longer than necessary. The back room is slightly better noise-wise, but the tables fill up fast.
I used to love coming to the banshee and interacting with the bartenders but after my experience with the manager Liz here she’s ruined it for me. As I was getting off work I expected to go to the banshee grab some food and a drink but as soon as I entered and asked if the Kitchen was open Liz was nothing but rude and disrespectful as I asked. When I showed her my military ID as an identification card she couldn’t read so I showed her my other ID and she had told me it was expired when it clearly showed the expiration date of 2029. Idk if anyone else has had a a bad experience with this person but if so wouldn’t recommend coming when she’s on shift or your night won’t be as great as you expect it to be. Owners should really consider who they hire because if they get more people like Liz it won’t be a good time for business.
The place was super crowded and hot outside - we walked in to order few burgers take away, my dog was sleeping under table after long hike. Very nice waitress passed few times and pet her. Then some guy appeared - probably manager ? Waiter? and I asked if could have some water for the dog while we are waiting. He was super rude, said he doesn't want clients to slip on the water, then literally throw us away. I was completely shocked. Shame cause heard food is good, but happily there are other good burger places in town. We had no chance to try.
Was doing fine until I was getting ready to leave and a "server" came up to me and wanted to give me an entire tray of food that I didn't order. She started to argue with me when the people next to me claimed the food. That wasn't enough for her and continued to argue with me. I told her I wanted to speak to the manager when she claimed to be the manager on duty (1/3/25). Well that was enough for me, and I will be going back only to speak to the owner about it asap. BTW; wasn't the food so much as the service; yes, I get that the order was a mistake, it was THE SERVICE by that particular "waitress" that was a problem and the followup "service" I had a problem with. No, I won't be back to "discuss" that service with you. I didn't get the sense that a resolution would be possible from your staff at the time.
My family and I went in on a Sunday night for dinner. Back section was closed and we tried to find seating in the main bar area. Really strange vibe and not welcoming at all in this place. The waitress was unfriendly and not helpful. We felt uncomfortable and left. The waitress followed us out of the restaurant and ask why I was staring at her and her friends at the bar. I don’t like to be stared down and told her that. I’ve had some good meals here but won’t be going back there. Would rather eat somewhere else after this experience.
