The food was authentic Scottish, but very elevated, all locally sourced. The cocktails were delicious!

Had a really lovely meal here on the 21st December. They fitted us in last minute and were super accommodating which was really helpful as we’d had a stressful journey. We had the festive three course menu which was absolutely delicious. Haggis starter was exceptional. I had the duck and my partner had the salmon for mains and the portion sizes were really substantial. We both had the chocolate for dessert and it was simply out of this world. I would highly recommend this place. We will definitely be back.

Hadn't been for a very long time, but it was great to be back in and nothing disappointed. We had booked for 6:30 and we're the first table to be filled, so it was initially quiet but other diners soon arrived and the atmosphere was pleasing enough but not busy. Food was great. Haggis spring rolls and chicken liver parfait for starters and moist chicken roulade and perfectly cooked venison for mains. All yummy. We shared the apple crumble for pudding which was more than enough. Add in a bottle of very reasonably priced montepulciano and a couple of coffees to complete a great meal.

Such good food! Creative and well presented - fresh Scottish ingredients and traditions at the heart of each course but with a modern twist. The staff were so friendly and helpful, suggesting wines that paired perfectly with each course - and even thoughtful suggestions about things we could do on our trip to Edinburgh. Highly, highly recommend!

We came here by accident after our original booking somewhere else was cancelled without notice. I am so glad we found Merchants. They fitted us in even without a booking. The staff were incredible and every course just got better. The food was exceptional and very reasonably priced considering the quality. We had the burns weekend menu and it was delicious. It’s a hidden gem in Edinburgh and I will 100% be back!

Excellent hidden gem in the city centre. Dinner last night was exceptional. Food is superb and very well presented. Service was very friendly and top level. On a short stay in the city but would 100% return.

We visited on Christmas Day and everything was spot on. The ambience was lovely and the Christmas menu was really delicious. Beetroot as starter was very delicious. I requested potatoes without haggis with the beef dish, and the team were happy to accommodate it which I really appreciated. Service was very good and attentive, and the restaurant felt clean and cosy.

So happy to have found this hidden gem in Edinburgh. We had the Christmas menu - the options were fantastic and the food delish. The atmosphere was so cosy and inviting, but the most standout element was the people - every single team member we engaged with was super friendly and helpful. Our server, Logan, was absolutely brilliant - just the perfect level of service without being OTT. 100% recommend 🙌🏻

Less than a week out from Christmas (19th December) they managed to serve us a superb festive mid-afternoon lunch so that 12 of us could celebrate my retirement from work. A most fitting end to my many years as a wage slave. Thank you for making it memorable.

Me and my partner came here on Christmas Day for a 3 course meal. Food was all lovely and stuff was very lovely. I felt the place lacked atmosphere however this could be due to it being Christmas Day. I also felt the price was too high as it was £80 per head which the food was not up to that price however, again this was Christmas Day so naturally prices are higher everywhere.

Amazing food, service and company. I went here with my picky eater partner for our 4 year anniversary and we agree it was a spectacular meal to share for such a milestone. The service was so thoughtful and the space was beautifully lit with a warm cozy feel. Great playlist. Highly recommend.

Went for a Valentine’s date night… couldn’t fault one thing! The food was insanely delicious (especially the chicken prosciutto), the vibes were immaculate, and the staff were absolutely incredible… the waitress that served us was super sweet and made us feel so looked after!

Food, service, vibes here were all outstanding. Had the best time. Incredibly delicious dishes and cocktails. If I lived here I would bother this place weekly at least. They would be sick of me. Loved it all.

This is a genuine hidden gem in Edinburgh. The restaurant is beautiful and the moment you walk in the staff are attentive and respectful. The atmosphere is lovely, really nice restaurant vibe without being stuffy at all. The food was incredible, each course exceeded expectations and the staff were able to advise to suit our tastes. It’s often a bit of a lottery, dining in the most heavily touristed parts of Edinburgh. This place is like winning that lottery. The food is really really lovely. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. We had a dog with us and they made a real fuss of him. Reasonable prices too.

We wanted something other than just pub food and their dishes were wonderful. Their beef was cooked to perfection and the cocktails were great, especially the espresso martini. Don’t miss out on the sticky toffee pudding and the carmel sauce

Phenomenal experience here! We were the last table on a Saturday night. We were amazed by the taste and quality of food, and the superb atmosphere and service! I would visit Edinburgh again, just to have a meal here.

This meal, the ambience and service were great! Convenient location but much quieter and easier dining experience than the neighbors on grassmarket. We had 3 starters, 3 meals, and 2 desserts and they were all flawless.

We only stumbled across this lovely restaurant by taking a wrong turn. But we decided to see if they had any availability. We were greeted by very nice and polite staff and we were seated right away. The food was outstanding and the presentation of the food was amazing. Great decor and a lovely atmosphere. Would recommend for couples, groups or families.

Great restaurant if you're visiting Edinburgh. Fantastic food and great ambiance inside. I think it's worth mentioning that this place is far better than some of the reviews from 2+ years ago suggest. Cocktails were also top class and very generous in size. Great host who always had a smile and made us feel very welcome.

Visiting Edinburgh for the day and booked a 3 course lunch at Merchants to celebrate Mother's Day. Mum and Granny enjoyed themselves so job well done! Fizz on arrival and staff so accommodating to our needs. Will definitely be visiting again next time I am in Edinburgh. Food was delicious and well priced.

I have been dropping ppl of here for many years as a coach driver . Today I went in and was one of the best meals I have had . Looking at this restaurant from the outside and the location you would not think it was a most fantastic restaurant and it's deco in side is amazing . It is a must visit and you will not be disappointed

We had a wonderful dinner experience at Merchants. We had Logan as our server. He was such a great server! He had us laughing throughout the dinner! Everything was perfect! The food was absolutely amazing and the atmosphere was very comfortable. Would def recommend making this a dinner stop while you are in Edinburgh!

Had dinner with my group on our visit in Edinburgh. The resto is so red color. The food wasn't so bad. The waiter & waitress need to smile a bit.

Cool location with a great staff. Moderate portions that leave you satisfied. Nicely prepared drinks. The dessert was a fantastic way to end with a glass of port. The menu is a little limited and certainly on the art is food side, but this is a positive and a nice break from all the overdone typical Scottish style. This place has a Scottish style all to its own.

Was nice overall, scallop starter was great, turkey main was ok except they forgot roast potatoes and when they did bring them out they definitely weren’t cooked in goose fat. Friendly staff, nice decor, 10% service charge added which is fine, but then being asked to add another tip on top was a little strange. Would give 4*

Hadn’t been in decades. Used to be amazing seafood on offer, now just a fairly typical menu. The biggest shock was the rude staff, especially Laura who would perhaps account for the lack of customers in the restaurant when we visited - only three tables occupied on a Saturday night during the Fringe. Such a shame.

On reopening was looking forward to eating there. However, the service was just okay, the fish was a little dry, the beef was so overcooked and tough, it was difficult to cut and on mentioning was given more sauce! The wine bottle was brought to the table and had already been opened and when we asked why, he says I'll let the barman know?
