Had the Korean chicken bao which was a good mix of sweet and spicy. 5/5 The walnut shrimp bao is interesting but not for me. Too sweet and dessert like but I can appreciate the hash-brown disc like puck of shrimp inside. 2/5 The crab daddy bao was interesting because I wasn’t expecting a whole fried up soft shelled little crab guy in my bao bun. A tasty dude though. 5/5 Staff are kind and make good recommendations. The duck bao bun is apparently the most bought from their selection. Looking forward to trying it next time!

Small spot with big flavors. We swung by to grab some lunch. Between my hubby and I we ordered the fried cauiliflower, two bulgogi baos, a soft shell crab bao, a Korean chicken bao, and a Memphis bao to start. My husband later ordered the Memphis, the pork belly and one more I cant remember the name of. The food was delicious! We will definitely return on a future visit to Houston.

A couple of years ago, there was restaurant food and there was food truck food. The places on wheels somehow had more boldness to make wacky stuff that didn’t seem like it should go together, but once I’d bite into it, I was like YESS! Fat Bao is that same formula but with a bathroom and no wheels. All kinds of weird flavor combos that seem unfitting until you try. I’m convinced that every one of their little baos are fire because I didn’t have a single bite that disappointed. The onion rings were unreal too. Great/quick service, and the atmosphere was good too. I’ll be back like the Terminator. So good.

I always wanted to try this place as I’ve heard good things. Man, they did not disappoint. I got their most popular buns and they are all pretty good. It tasted like the pork was the coldest out of all the three, but all the sauces were good. I would say the chicken and crab bao were the best out of three. The pork is good, but too thick for me to chew. Highly recommend trying out this place if you want to give it a shot.

We have loved fat bao for years!!!! We don't live close anymore so we don't get the opportunity to come as often but it always hits!! The fat fries with bulgogi are a MUST!

i got the pork katsu, crab daddy, and yummy byrd (from left to right). i would say my fav one is the yummy byrd! it kinda tasted like chicken alfredo. the other ones were good 7/10. i would def come back to try different kinds!

Cute little place with lots of flavorful options. They're small, so you'll want 2 or 3. Do beware if you have a Sesame allergy, as my husband's options were limited. Curry Beef was great for us both!

⚠️OINK-O-RAMA⚠️ So much yummy variety of Bao; though closer to an open face version than the dumpling style many are accustomed too; Vivé la Différencē! Saturday evening 10.27 & within an hour of closing I was nicely greeted and quickly served a Fish, the Korean Fried Chicken & the duck Bao. Fish was the stand out, KFC was really good and absent the fish would be my face... the duck was delicious and had no obvious flaws but somehow felt less than the sum of its parts (?), still worth a go if fowl is your thing + very meaty. RECOMMENDED!

I've been coming here for years and it still holds up as one of the best Bao places in Houston! A personal favorite of mine is the Yummy Byrd, which I frequently crave from here- it has a lightly cooked outer coat that slightly crunches when you bite into it, giving way to a soft interior. The description doesn't tell you this, but it is incredibly yummy and one of the only baos here whose exterior is lightly crunchy like this! Most of the rest have the typical soft bao breading (which is still very yummy and very good). My second favorite is the Pork Belly, which tastes like your standard pork belly found in many dishes, with the added bonus of having lightly crunchy cucumbers with it and a yummy hoisin sauce. Other notable flavors for me are Chicken Masala, Beef Bulgogi, and Pork Katsu. With that being said, you truthfully can't go wrong with any of the options as they're all very well-made. The meat on all the different choices is always cooked excellently, from the pork to the chicken to the curry to the fish; I've yet to try the duck though! The fries are very good here, and are extremely crunchy and satisfying to bite into. Don't be fooled by my photo, we had eaten well over half at that point. For 6 baos and fries, we spent almost $50, so do be aware that the price does stack up rather fast here. Luckily, the baos are very filling and most people can fully eat between 2-4 before feeling full. Overall, a very good place and I highly recommend trying at least once!

Fat Bao is a great place to stop for a quick bite to eat. There is a good variety of menu items, including fish, tofu, beef, chicken, and pork. There are also interesting appetizers like fried avocado, which is my favorite! Service is kind and timely. The facility is clean. The atmosphere is cozy like a coffee shop.

If you love bao, this restaurant is a must-visit! The menu offers a fantastic variety, from classic pork belly and crispy chicken to delicious tofu option. Each one is packed with flavor, with soft, pillowy buns with perfectly complementing fillings. Beyond the baos, there are plenty of appetizers. Our favorite is Avocado chips. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, making it a great spot for a quick bite or a relaxed meal with friends. Highly recommend!

Highly Recommend! All of their baos taste home made and from scratch. My favorite was the salmon one that had cream cheese and reminded me of a Philadelphia roll. Highly recommend their cauliflower appetizer too, there’s a lot of different spices in there that make it good. A must to try if stopping in Houston!

We tried so many types of bao and the fat fries. We got a couple of extra for our group in case we didn't get enough. My favorite ones were the Thai spicy and tuna, but the pork belly was also so tender and delicious falling apart meat with a generous portion. Don't sleep on this great find if you love bao.

We tried the Memphis, Crab Daddy, & Pork Katsu. The pork on the Memphis bao was so tender & flavorful and the spicy mayo added a nice kick. Their thin fries are so crispy and good! We also tried the dessert baos, which were really good and not overly sweet

This wasn’t the first time for us to come to Fat Bao so we knew what we were wanting / what to expect. I wish I would have taken a picture of the menu - but their prices are definitely updated and the photos on google are outdated. But also if you’re ordering online the premium is $$ We got a few shareable munchie items - the fat fries with pork belly and fat onion rings. The fries were amazing and the onion rings was good (but only with the dipping sauce - by themselves they’re bland) For our baos we got pork belly ($4.5), duck ($8), and crab daddy. The amount of filling is great; really I could have used another bao to split up the pork belly and duck into 2 baos for each one. All were great and none of them disappointed. I’m not sure the duck is worth the premium, but I still enjoyed it. For dessert we got the Banana Nutella Bao with a fried Bao with the Nutella and banana on the inside - just as you would think (but I love Nutella and banana!) and we got the special dessert they had - Thai Tea Tres Leches. Overall - we love coming to Fat Bao. It takes the traditional Bao and gives it a twist on the traditional Bao.

I recently had an amazing meal here and I can't recommend it enough! From the moment I walked in, the service was exceptional, especially thanks to a wonderful staff member named Junior. He was incredibly friendly and honest with his recommendations, which truly enhanced my dining experience. In fact, he's the reason I ended up getting desserts to enjoy later! Speaking of the food, the chicken masala bao was absolutely divine – a definite highlight and my favorite dish. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the bao itself was so soft and fluffy. I'm already looking forward to my next visit to try more of their delicious offerings and, of course, to finally dig into those desserts Junior convinced me to get! If you're looking for something new and interesting to try, Fat Bao is the place to go.

Loved the creativity by combining different food cultures! The crab one was very delicious. Asian slaw was a bit too sweet for my taste. I’d definitely go back to try different recipes.

Good food and friendly staff. I’m not a fan of picnic table style seating but their space is limited so I understand. The Fat Fish Fries are great. The wings would be outstanding but they tasted old. The chicken must be pre-cooked then they fry it before the order goes in. The batter is delicious and the crispiest batter I’ve ever had. The meat on the chicken tasted old, this why I think they refrigerate the wings after cooking the first time.

Fat Bao takes Chinese cuisine as its foundation and fuses it with a wide range of other influences, resulting in slider sized bao sandwiches that aim to be playful and inventive. The restaurant is counter service, offering about sixteen different bao options, along with a small selection of appetizers and desserts. We arrived for a slightly later lunch, and while it was not overly busy at first, a steady crowd built over time without ever becoming overwhelming. Ordering was straightforward, and the staff explained that most diners order two to three bao for a meal, as each is relatively small, about three to four bites each. Personally, I could have eaten four or five with an appetizer, though I arrived particularly hungry that day. Many of the offerings were intriguing, and there is no shortage of flavor here. Each filling on its own was well prepared and enjoyable. The bao themselves were also good. My main issue was that the two did not truly connect. The bao functioned more as a delivery system than as an integrated part of the dish. The fillings and the bread never quite complemented one another in a way that felt cohesive. Presentation also worked against the experience. Several fillings were quite wet, and serving multiple bao together in a cardboard bowl led to sauces bleeding into one another. This cross contamination blurred the individuality of each option. Using simple dividers or taco style holders inside the bowl would go a long way toward preserving the integrity of each bao. In the end, I enjoyed the meal, but it fell short of being something I wanted to return to. There is promise here, and the ideas are strong, but the execution needs further refinement for the experience to feel whole. My rating: ★★★☆☆ (3 stars) Rating scale: 1 star — I will never return. 2 stars — If nearby, I might return, but without urgency. 3 stars — Worth a visit if in the area, though not a destination. 4 stars — Worth going out of your way to enjoy. 5 stars — I would fly around the world for this meal.

I’ve been coming to Fat Bao since 2016. In the past, the food has always hit just right, and I have always been satisfied. Today, I was disappointed with both the food and the restaurant. I’m not sure when Fat Bao stopped having menus on hand for customers to peruse, but the lack thereof is honestly irritating. Luckily there wasn’t a line today, but it’s still a bit awkward contemplating the menu at the ordering stand (and if there had been a line, we would have held everyone up..). When I asked for a menu to look at while sitting, the (very nice) cashier told me they didn’t have any, but that I could take a picture of the menu or look online. When I asked about wifi, she said Fat Bao didn’t have wifi for guests. As a restaurant, if you’ve decided to switch to online menu only for guests, you need to have a guest wifi. When it comes to the food, I had the pork belly bao and the curry beef bao. The pork belly was strangely dry, but the flavors were decent. The curry beef was pretty good (though still had dryer beef than it used to). We got the thai tea tres leches to finish, and while it wasn’t bad, it didn’t have as much flavor as I expected. Just overall less quality than a few years ago.

Ate here for Sunday lunch rather soon after they opened. I saw another review about the front man/cashier. They weren’t the friendliest, nor was he rude. Just there. Didn’t seem to thrilled either when I asked their opinion between two choices, even when there wasn’t a line behind us. So, there was no need to rush a choice, nor was it a “long” day yet. It just seemed that we were a nuisance versus they were willing to help. I get customer/food service ISNT the greatest job… but a little effort goes a long way. The food. It was average. The Fat Caul, fried cauliflower is some slices, was okay. It was a bit too greasy for me, but the best part for me. For some reason, the pork belly just turned me off from seeing it, and could only eat a little of it. The bulgogi was probably average, it was very wet/saucy. The pork katsu was probably the best out of all of them. And the pickled red onions? Sigh. They were probably older because they had no bite to them. Slightly disappointing in comparison to the ones I make myself. However, I need to say the buns themselves were soft and fluffy. The atmosphere was meh. Just average all around. Maybe I would go again if it was “brighter”? Not even sure if that’s the right phrase.

Very mid coming from an Asian who loves bao Ambiance was quiet and nice with a good clean environment and friendly waiter. Bulgogi -3/10 : texture soft like baby food, too sweet, too salty. Very disappointing and doesn’t taste like real bulgogi too little meat. Spicy Thai - 5/10 : not crispy soggy , over powering mayo, fish was a little too tough. Katsu- 7/10: pretty good, needs more avocado and better quality katsu sauce Chips-9/10 : super good and fresh
