Kata Robata Houston Reviews
I've been a loyal fan of Kata Robata for over a decade, and they never cease to impress! The food has beautifully evolved while remaining true to its original classic and modern roots, just like my experiences there. If you're in search of high-quality traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine, look no further—Kata Robata offers an outstanding selection of sashimi, sushi, grilled meats, and hot dishes. Their diverse menu caters perfectly to both newcomers to Japanese food and seasoned enthusiasts alike. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a delightful meal, this place has you covered. Plus, the knowledgeable and attentive staff always go above and beyond to ensure a fantastic dining experience.
I dined at Kata Robata today and it was such a thoughtfully curated experience from start to finish. I began with the mixed seaweed salad, a blend of about five different seaweeds tossed with sauce tableside, and it honestly tasted floral, oceanic, and almost otherworldly. For rolls, I tried three standouts. The Tropical Spicy Tuna Roll was vibrant and balanced with the mango and wasabi vinaigrette, a solid 4 out of 5. The Ocean Picante Roll had great heat and texture from the asparagus tempura and chili oil, also a 4 out of 5. But the Rising Sun Roll completely stole the show. The yellowtail, peppercorn tuna, avocado, and truffle vinaigrette combination was refined, clean, and deeply satisfying, an easy 5 out of 5. For dessert, we shared the green tea bean cake with ice cream, soft, delicate, and incredibly fresh, followed by hot green tea that was refilled attentively without ever asking. The service, pacing, and freshness of the food made the entire meal feel special. After Uchiko, Kata Robata now firmly holds my number two spot for sushi in Houston, and honestly, on some days, it gives Uchiko real competition.
Having celebrated my birthday twice at Kata, I can safely say that this place is something you don’t want to pass on. The service is exceptional from start to finish and the restaurant itself offers a minimalist luxury feel. The black miso cod is one of the best fish dishes I have ever had, and the grilled octopus is just as good. Their sushi is fresh as well. I can’t wait to come back for another celebration or just for a nice meal.
We went here on a whim after an event to get some light sushi. We had excellent service and loved the rolls we got, the toro, tropical spicy tuna, and Texas Himachi. We felt guilty to have a picky eater who did not care for the food, but that was more about him than the selection. 3 out of 4 of us loved our meal and cocktails. We appreciated the waitress’s patience and would undoubtedly return.
We came here because I saw they have katsudon in the pictures but it turns out kastu don is for lunch only, so will need to come back for that! I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t have kastudon when I was craving for it but everything about the restaurant makes the visit worth it! We ordered a few more items than in the pictures (they’re so good that I forgot to take a picture) and we loved everything! A bit pricey but worth it!
Best Ramen i have had in years. The thing is to get a reservation if you can because you can end up waiting for awhile. The hostesses were great and the manager was nice while we waited. Great service and great food
my family came as a party of 10 and everyone enjoyed it here. our server was phenomenal and the food was amazing! the atmosphere here is also very nice as well. we enjoyed the wagyu sandos and definitely recommend it to anyone trying this place out. overall, expensive but the quality of the food is top tier!
We were very pleasantly surprised with our lunch at Kata Robata. The service was excellent, the food was great, and the restaurant was beautiful. House made seaweed salad - A unique seaweed salad that was served with a sesame vinaigrette. It was tasty, but felt a bit pricey for what it was (and the portion). We liked it, but not really at the top of the list for next time. Spicy Soy Ramen - The broth was rich, but we found the soy milk broth to be a bit overpowering. Not the best ramen we had, but it was still quite good. Sushi (Tuna, Sea Bream, Horse Mackerel, Hotate): All were excellent with a nice fish to rice ratio. The sushi rice was excellently seasoned without it being overpowering or too bland Chirashi - an impressive selection of fish over perfect sushi rice. Our selection included 2 pieces of o’toro, chu toro, blue fin tuna, salmon, salmon egg, eel, (1 piece) sea bream, amberjack, striped jack, and egg omelet. For the price, we felt that this was well worth it and it really highlighted the amazing quality of fish. Matcha shaved ice with red bean ice cream: This desert was HUGE for the price! The matcha flavor was excellent and was one of the best shaved ice that I’ve had!
Wow! Such a fantastic Japanese restaurant. Cool vibes...and more importantly delicious food. We had the Texas wagyu sando, chirashi, and the sashimi for two. The highlight/surprise of our meal was when our wonderful server asked if we wanted the shrimp heads, which we assumed to be decorative, fried. What? Obviously the answer is YES! And man, that was really the best!!! And the shaved ice was fantastic! It came with a lychee flavored condensed milk???!!! Amazing. Definitely would go again!
Kobe beef is exceptional! I like to pair it with a bowl of white rice 😃 Crab and lobster ramen is perfectly spiced and very rich. love its atmosphere. Service is excellent; very professional and pleasant. Can get really busy on weekends. I would recommend making a reservation ahead of time.
Came here to celebrate a birthday and it was the perfect choice as alway. The food was outstanding ; fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Our server was very knowledgeable and gave great recommendations from the menu that we absolutely loved. Easily the best sushi spot in Houston. Highly recommend!
Came to celebrate my birthday and Van was FANTASTIC!! Best service I’ve ever had and the food was great too! He took extra care to make sure to answer our questions and asked about allergies. The presentation was impeccable, every dish looked fantastic and tasted even better. We got the kata house salad, lobster and crab ramen, Wagyu Katsu Sando, Japanese wagyu beef, velvet lychee, and the old fashion way. All mouth watering The tomatoes were so good my husband who doesn’t like tomatoes won’t stop talking about them, and the velvet lychee was probably the best cocktail I’ve had in awhile. For desert I ordered the warm blueberry cake that came with earl gray lemon ice cream and it was just to die for! Our server brought me a serving of green tea cheesecake which was also incredible! My husband got coffee afterward and he says it’s the best coffee he’s ever had. The bathrooms were clean and had a full heated bidet and were very well decorated. Lovely experience would recommend!!
Our server was Nguyen T and he was an amazing server! His diction and recommendation was great, he suggested dishes for the table such as the Kata’s ceviche, Texas wagyu hot stone, and papaya and pork belly salad, all of which we enjoyed. He cleaned our table nicely and the other gentlemen that ran our foods were also very nice and told us each what the dishes were and what it had. It was our first time here and the hostess were welcoming and nice as we entered and as we left.
This sushi restaurant will forever hold a special place in my heart. It was the very first spot my husband and I visited together when we moved to Houston, and from that day on, it has been our go-to no matter the day, time, or occasion. I know Houston is filled with endless sushi spots, but trust me nothing compares to this one(my only opinion). The freshness, the flavors, the presentation… every bite feels like it’s made with love and perfection. The fish practically melts in your mouth, and the rolls are pure works of art. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff makes you feel like family every single time. We’ve tried other places out of curiosity, but we always find ourselves coming back here because it’s simply the best. Whether it’s a date night, a casual lunch, or just a craving we can’t ignore, this is the place we choose without hesitation. If you’re in Houston and love sushi, do yourself a favor come here. You’ll fall in love just like we did. Highly, highly recommend!
Everything pictured here was absolutely amazing. I didn’t take a picture of it, but the mac & cheese was unforgettable and the reason we went back a second time. The regular and the lobster mac is worth a try. The service is top tier. If you haven’t been to Kata Robata, what are you doing? Come check it out! Best, fresh sushi and other food items. The wagyu hot stone bowl is divine as well.
Kata Robata is an outstanding spot for a meal with friends — the atmosphere is stylish yet relaxed, and the food is top-notch. I was especially impressed by the variety of vegan options available, which made it easy to accommodate everyone in our group. Whether you're into sushi, small plates, or plant-based dishes, there’s something for everyone. Highly recommended for a casual yet high-quality dining experience in Houston!
This is hands down my favorite Japanese restaurant in town. It never fails to impress with its consistently excellent dishes and friendly service. The quality is always top-notch — everything tastes fresh and carefully prepared. I especially love the sashimi and wagyu beef — both are absolutely amazing and full of flavor. Whether it’s lunch or dinner, I always leave happy. It’s one of those places you just keep coming back to!

I have mixed feelings about this place. I’ll start with the good stuff, the server surprised my wife with a small cake to celebrate her birthday, love the fact that he went above and beyond he also gave a decent recommendation for dishes/food BUT I felt rushed throughout my experience dining. It was probably his style of doing things but he kept fidgeting with things on our table (removing trash, aligning places/cups etc) I understand I’m an OCD person myself and I felt that he was too but i want to have a slow experience while dining. Overall the taste of the food was good, price maybe a little high but definitely worth it. I give a rating of 4/5.
I took my 10yr old niece and we really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was very nice and the service was 5 star. We Shared the Caribbean roll and that was a big mistake! It was so delicious that we each should've gotten our own. We each ordered the lobster and crab Ramen. The Ramen wasn't bad but I was expecting more. More flavor, more crab, more lobster. I'd give the Ramen dish a 5 out of 10. I will definitely go again but I would not order the same Ramen dish. Overall I really enjoyed my experience.
Our experience at Kata Robata was great. We really enjoyed everything that we ordered with the exception of the nigiri. The madai crudo was excellent and was easily the star of the show, which is interesting because it’s also a raw fish. It tasted so much more fresh than its nigiri counterparts. The wagyu sando and kobe beef skewers were also excellent in their texture and taste. I felt that the uni & king crab spoon could use a bit more uni. I could only really taste the crab during the bite but it was still overall really good. The nigiri was only decent - it was warm and reminded me of the type of fish quality you get at an AYCE sushi restaurant. There’s an increasing amount of competition in the Japanese food scene in Houston and if Kata Robata would like to stay competitive, then sourcing fresher fish would be advantageous for their business.

Food was great…service, not so much. From the time we walked in until the time our waitress came, we already had enough time to look at the menu and decide both our appetizer and lunch items (every bit of 10 min and was not acknowledged that we’d be serviced soon). It took about twenty minutes to get our appetizer out, not really a big deal. The problem we have is that they brought our food at separate times. I was going to wait to eat but my husband didn’t want my food getting cold so I already started eating while he was still waiting on his dish (both were rice bowls by the way). Not impressed as everyone makes it seem like it’s the best thing around. I can say we won’t be going back.

Actually the food is very good but do not trust their online reservation system. We had a calendar entry that was emailed to us but they would not believe their eyes. Reserve by telephone.

Side miso soup was in all chipped off and splitting wood bowl, I could taste the wood, I asked for a regular ceramic bowl but the server brought in this cheap plastic bowl with paint all pealed off. At this point just a disposable take out plastic bowl would be at least sanitary enough. Wagyu hot stone bowl 2/10. Will not come back.
