The best Chong Qing cuisine in California! Must-try: - crispy cube chicken peppercorns - fried pork intestine in mala peppercorns Make sure to dine-in to enjoy the meal while its hot. A lot of parking, but few tables. Quick preparation time. Clean restroom with running water and fresh soap. Well done!
Family loves to order 10 course meal take out meals from here. Many of their spicy dishes use the numbing “ma-la” spices - beware! Otherwise, must order everything from the salt and pepper fish, pork chop, green beans, spicy tofu, spicy fish. Enjoy!!!
Had a great lunch! At the tofu with celery, crunchy tofu cubes and eggplant. If you are vegan make sure to ask to remove meat from some of the dishes. The meal came with some good tea and plenty of rice. Thumbs up!
This place was so good !! I called ahead to ask about the veggie dishes and they said everything under the vegetables section is meat free (including seasoning) except for the vermicelli with minced pork. The eggplant and string bean dishes were my favorite and the mapo tofu was delightful. They're closed 3-5pm for dinner prep fyi !
Fried eggplant, kidney, pork belly, cumin lamb. Brilliant cooking, attentive service, lovely tea, bright dining area, generous portions and prices.
Amazing food great atmosphere. Wonderful employees.
The spice eggplant in garlic sauce is fantastic
Best szechuan restaurant in Irvine no doubt
Good authentic spicy Szechuan food.
Fried. Chicken. Cubes
Delicious food... great service....
Simply delicious Szechuan food!!
Very good
My go to spot for all things Szechuan.
Authentic and good value
Great food
Excellent.
We ordered a few items; Shredded potatoes with vinegar, cumin lamb, mashed garlic pork belly, native chicken with bones, A vegetable , vegetable fried rice, and mapo tofu(醋溜土豆丝,孜然羊肉,蒜泥白肉,土鸡,A veggie, veggie fried rice,麻婆tofu). Food was delicious. Service was quick, friendly, and accommodating.
One of OC's best restaurants! High recommendations: spicy tofu cubes, garlic achoy or bok choy, steamed rice, shredded potato with spicy vinegar sauce, the eggplant dish, and any fried fish dish (especially the salt & pepper one). It does get busy but I'm surprised they don't have a huge wait all the time!
Very good chongqing style cuisine! It is hard to find soft braised tofu around Irvine and I’m glad they have it here.
Delicious schezuan Chinese food. These guys make the best hot sour soup. The cubed spicy chicken is unique (and good).
Get take out from this place often. I’ve tried many dishes, and all have been great. Tasty, good Szechuan style food.
One of the best szhezuan food we've ever had... the bok choy was the best.. Service was a bit slow, but, it's ok they were super busy.Food that tingles the tongue and satisfies the heart!
Fantastic food, absolutely authentic Sichuan dishes. Probably the best Chinese restaurant that I have tried in southern California. Strongly recommend.
Reasonably priced, great sichuan style Chinese food. I have been coming here for last 6 years and service has always been good.
The best Chinese food we have had! Food is always consistently good.
Indians would love the sweet corn chicken soup , chicken with red peppers dry and their ginger fish .
authentic Chinese food, and my wife enjoyed much with their noodles
One of the most underrated places, in my opinion. I love the food here!
food are good with the price. is nice to have family dinner.
I lo-o-o-ove this place!!! Authentic, clean, great menu, & good service.
Very tasty food! Their green beans are awesome
Great food. Very authentic chongqing food.
You may see me here on a regular basis, almost every night. Love it!
Good restaurant for food. Parking lot is kind of crowded.
Chicken cubes with red pepper is my favorite
went today and it’s whole restaurant is empty… did they close ?
Authentic spicy Szechuan family owned restaurant!
Good food and always a crowd. Yum
this is my favorite Szechuan Chinese restaurant in Irvine....delicious....
I've been coming here for years since it's one of the first and only Szechuan restaurants that opened in Irvine. Thankfully it's authentic and super spicy, just the way I like it!! They recently updated the menu 👌🏼 I don't mind the service so much because it's typical of a Chinese restaurant, but they've seemed to have improved that too.
This restaurant offers really authentic SiChuan food at a affordable price. Had a hotpot plus a cold dish there last night and that was all good enough to feed two of us. Highly recommend this one. Five stars!
Our first time here and they're were happy to work with us! You don't get a great smell when you walk through the door but don't be fooled. The orange chicken and Mongolian beef were delicious, and the house fried rice was pretty good but could've used a tad more soy sauce. Overall a really nice restaurant with delicious food and speedy to-go orders!
This place is the best, I will say the BEST that I have had. My entire family LOVES the food. There are so many fantastic choices- it is a flavor explosion in your mouth. The service is really fast, we usually end up ordering around 5 dishes. If I could give 10 stars I will give it!
This is the some of the best Sichuan 川菜 I've had in the US. Ignore the bad reviews from the random white people who come here and order orange chicken and give it bad ratings. This place is legit. The portions are huge. The chef is apparently actually from Sichuan, so it's better than many of the other places around Irvine that also sell Sichuan dishes. In particular, their mapo tofu is the best I've had in the United States - when I was living on the east coast I would eagerly await flying back to CA just to come here and order it.
They serve unusual food, so different and heavenly although it could get too spicy sometimes, especially the deep fried pork intestines. The molo soup in hot, spicy pepper is soothing to the palate. Before you even start on the main course, try enjoying the wide variety of appetizers they offer. Highly recommended if you are adventurous!!
Visiting Irvine and the wife and I decided to get some Chinese for dinner. Couldn't have been happier. This place is great. I had the cured duck and she had the stir fried lamb with cumin. They were both incredibly flavorful. Great fast service.
This is the place to go for traditional Chinese szechuan family style meal. If you can't handle spicy food this may not be the place for you, though they do have a few plates that isn't so spicy. I've been coming here for years since they opened and the prices has increase quite a bit here. There tends to be a wait here during dinner time so prepare to wait. This place is a great mama pop restaurant!
Chingqing cold dishes is my ultimate dish. The one from this place has good meat quality, but not much tendon. Not the tastiest but still good
I am a Chinese. the food is really good there.
Authentic spicy Sichuan food
Try the boiled fish (水煮魚).
Best Szechuan I've found in the Irvine area
Tried shrimp noodles. It was good
Fried chicken cube is the move
Food very spicy.
Like it
Solid Szechuan cuisine.
My favorite Szechwan restaurant. Very spicy food. The must try are any of the hot pots, the cold appetizer dishes, and the fried chicken, and fried shrimp. Service is very spotty, but I like the food.
Great food!fresh grilled vegetables. Large choice of meats grilled steak chicken fish etc. The cafeteria style allows for a quick lunch, like fast food, except the food is fresh healthy, organic and very tasty.
Relatively authentic sichuan food - not spicy enough for my taste. Presentation is sloppy and prices are on the high side.
Good food, clean restaurant, fast service and consistent (have been visiting this place for over 3 years). Would recommend it to anyone looking for some szechuan food.
Came here at the recommendation of friends who live here locally. Place is small but clean and the food is excellent.
Been back twice in one week. Busy staff but friendly. Becoming one of my favorite places to go.
Taste very Chinese. Recommend for people who like spicy foods
Traditional delicious Chong Wing dishes. Reasonable price!
Good food, decent price and open on holidays.
This place has excellent Szechuan food. Service is better than average. Huge variety of things you can order. We always get the fried chicken cubes with red pepper. Love that numbing szechuan pepper! Eggplant in black bean sauce is awesome as are the wontons in the red chili oil. Also enjoy the lamb ribs. Cold appetizers in the tray are good as well. Very reasonably priced
It was my first time coming out here for a meal. I came out here to dine with family. Szechuan Cuisine Irvine turn out to be an authentic Chinese food place in Irvine. Austin was an exceptionally cool waiter and he is also tech savvy! We had Shrimp fried rice for the kids while the adults had fried chicken cubes with hot dry pepper, served with green tea, and hot and spicy fish fillet with soft tofu. By the sides, are eggplant with garlic sauce. Great place to be. We had such a good time. And the leftovers? we took them home in styrofoam packs.Whenever the opportunity opens up, I'd love to visit again.
It’s not same quality like before few years. Online Ordering system doesn’t pass instructions to chef. Thankfully they honored request in restaurant and replaced order to match request.
Good lunch spot, reasonable price, mix and match interior is little bit confusing for a Chinese restaurant.
Ok food, slow service
I placed an order online, and the order status wasn’t updated, so I had to go in to check. When I got there, they were confused about my order. Eventually I got it. The bag was tied up and hard to open. The kung pao shrimp 🍤 could have had some rice to it. Plum drink is ok.
Come back after one year and is disappointed, not feeling a bite of authentic Szechuan flavor in any of our three dishes. The whole fish is very fresh, which is all the good of it, without any Szechuan (either ChongQing or ChengDu) spicy taste which is the reason for us to go there!
They really brought the MSG game to a whole new level. I felt punished after the first bite. Growing up eating MSG and I was defeated there. It has to stop.
We've been coming to Chong Qing Mei Wei for years. At one point it was our favorite Chinese restaurant in Irvine. Then it went downhill and we didn't come back for a while. The restaurant became good again in the last two years. Recently they've been a little inconsistent. We've experienced the following on an "off" night - cold dishes tasted different and strange (rancid and sour), fish tasted fishy and mushy (not fresh), intestine tasted funky (they didn't wash it properly so it still had who-knows-what in it), vegetable being super oily and no salt added, and missing ingredient in hot pot. We have a slight feeling that it's repeating the downhill phase from a few years back. I hope they don't. When they were good, they were really good!
We ordered tofu and vegetable soup, Kungpao chicken, cold noodle with special sauce, and beef in dry pot. The soup just tasted like white pepper and nothing else. The kungpao chicken was very Americanized and too sweet. The cold noodle’s sauce was even more sweet, like I can taste the sugar. The beef would’ve been good if there was less numbing pepper in there.
The beef is not fresh here.
Bad service and the waiters are quite rude.
My friend and I have gone to this restaurant many times prior to last evening, 7/6/16, and I have ordered take-out several times as well. I was absolutely shocked to find that the prices were considerably higher than they used to be. We're not talking 50 cents or a buck, we're talking 2 to 3 dollars MORE per item. When I questioned the manager about this, he said it was the "owner's" decision, to which I replied " And not a good one". AND to add insult to injury, they charge $1.00 for rice per item. They charged for rice before, but now with those exorbitant prices, rice should come free with the items ordered. My friend and I noticed that it was not as crowded as it used to be either, and no wonder. We usually order 4 or 5 items, so we can have leftovers, but it's so expensive now, we only ordered 3, and didn't have much to take home between us. The bill came to almost $50.00 with tax, and it really should have been $35.00. I am a senior citizen living on social security, and I absolutely cannot afford to ever eat there again. Don't get me wrong, the food is outstanding but I could only give one star because of the prices. Back to Sam Woo's next door or on Culver I guess, even though I'm partial to Szechuan as opposed to Mandarin. It's just a shame that greed has taken over the owner's conscience and spoiled it for everyone else. Can anyone suggest a good Szechuan restaurant whose prices are reasonable?
I wouldn't recommend this place unless you have time to waste. The staff is very very unwelcoming I tried to ask two different staff members about the order I placed which was supposed to be ready 20 minutes ago. The first one looked at me and said one word no then went back to the kitchen. The second looked at me and continued going through receipts without saying word. Absolutely the worst staff and not worth the trouble for the food.
This is my first time writing a Google review. This is the worst restaurant I have ever been to. The fish we ordered was not fresh. This restaurant is very dishonest. The quality falls far from the price!
No clean dishes, complete lack of service, super oily food. Won't be back!
Greasy food with poor service. Water wasn't even refilled once!
Prepare to be ignored and go hungry. My husband and I waited an hour for food and the party who ordered 15 min after us got served before us. It takes them 15 min to prepare each dish - and they don’t serve the next party until they finish every single order in the prior party (no matter how big). It is the most inefficient and asanine system. They also completed all of the to go customers prior to us. We left after an hour and will not be coming back. Avoid!
eh, i think the food was old and it had like sour vinegar type taste . the spicy chicken was ok, but i spent like 80$ on valentines day and we basically threw it out.... and i am seriously not a shy eater either. very disappointed despite the positive reviews. the garlic green beans were the best item....
Well, I've tried 2 times to eat at this place. Each time when I walked in there were tables available and no guests waiting to be seated. However in each case no restaurant staff showed the slightest interest in the fact that a customer (me) was waiting. I stood there in the entry for 5 minutes and finally got tired of being ignored. On this most recent visit I did take the opportunity to look over the buffet (??). I have to say the food looked pretty unappetizing sitting there in the steam trays. As was the case on my previous visit, I gave up on this place and went next door to the Tangdu restaurant. The food there, by the way, was very good.
I only like authentic Szechuan Chinese food unless I'm eating dim sum, so I've been looking for a good place for many years, and when I found this listing and the reviews said this place was great most of the time, I was excited to place a to-go order and drive 40 minutes round trip for a treat! NOT WORTH IT AT ALL. I guess they heard a voice without an accent and decided I didn't want the traditional spicy flavor, because what I received (picture shown) had something sort of resembling the proper flavor but with ZERO heat. I struggled to find one pepper flake in the whole thing. Adding insult, it was supposed to be ready in 10-15 minutes, and it took 40! For one dish!!! It also cost $15 for the one dish, and they weren't even going to give me rice until I looked horrified. I definitely did not drive 40 minutes to wait around for my food, and then pay $15 for a $4.99 batch of "Chinese Restaurant" food. Never again.
