Dun Huang (Tim Ho Wan) in Irvine offers a delightful dim sum experience, particularly praised for its signature baked BBQ pork buns and red rice rolls. Customers rave about the attentive service, especially mentioning servers like Ting and Neal, and the clean, modern renovated space.
Tip: Ask for servers Neal or Ting for excellent service. Ordering via phone may be faster.
Came here twice now, both times around 5:30-6pm on a Saturday. There was no wait when we arrived, though it was about 90% full. There was a line by the time we finished. The food was great. Really authentic flavors that honestly made me feel like I was back in Hong Kong. It’s hard to find dim sum that hits that nostalgic mark, but this place does. I’d happily come back anytime when I’m craving proper Hong Kong style dim sum. We also liked their ginseng oolong tea, which was really fragrant and smooth with a gentle sweetness on the finish. We even asked if we could buy the tea leaves but they weren’t available for sale. I hope they consider offering that in the future! Service was a bit mixed, but overall fine. Our first server, Rich was friendly and gave good recommendations. The QR code ordering system wasn’t working at the time (they were still within their first month/soft opening), and there were a few small mix-ups - we received iced tea instead of hot tea, and at one point given the bill with change before we even ordered. Nothing that really bothered us, just minor kinks that probably come with a new opening. The second visit was the opposite experience, the main server was mostly absent, but what I assume was the manager was extremely friendly and proactive, which made a difference. Overall solid quality, good value and authentic flavors. Definitely recommend and would return.
We came here for a very late lunch and were lucky to have a very attentive staff serving us. My daughter likes the congee, and I like the crispy tofu. Golden lava bun is also delicious.
Awesome Dim Sum!!! I've been to Tokyo Tim Ho Wan and both restaurants exceed what you expect from a very authentic Dim Sum "house." Overall, it was very comforting and a pleasure to dine here. BZ to your outstanding crew for their attention to detail and customer service. Highly recommend this restaurant!
We had a wonderful experience at Tim Ho Wan. This was our first time visiting this location, and everything exceeded our expectations. Our server, Ting, was especially helpful and attentive. She greeted us warmly and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the meal, providing excellent service. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the tea, the signature pork buns, which were fluffy, airy, and incredibly tasty, and the Hinoki mushroom roll, which we really enjoyed. The decor is beautiful, the restaurant is spacious and well lit, and the overall atmosphere was great. We’ll definitely be coming back!
This is the first time we’ve been here since the remodel and the dinner service is like night and day. Rich was our server and he was so friendly and helpful. The food came out quickly and was very fresh. We are vegetarians and we loved the seaweed tofu as well as the fried lava egg buns. Very impressed with the taste and textures. All of the staff were very friendly and they always made sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommend.
We were warmly seated by Loi and our primary server was Dylan who was attentive, professional, friendly, and always had a smile on his face. The space is new and well-appointed. Ordering can be done via your server or using your phone; orders placed via phone arrive faster. The food arrived promptly and was expertly prepared despite the volume of covers the kitchen had to prepare. Empty plates were cleared promptly and servers were always accommodating. Props again to Dylan and Loi for a great dining experience!
I've been to the THWs in Las Vegas, Houston, and Waikiki. This one is the best of them because (1) some of the signature dishes are not found in the others, (2) the service is more attentive, and (3) the food is superior quality in taste and portions. I wish the coconut lava sesame balls were here but the white and dark chocolate ones make up for it. Parking is a challenge but it's not the restaurant's fault. The seating can accommodate small and large parties but call ahead if you have a large party to be sure.
Delicious and classic food. New menu and was excited to try new dishes. Everything was delicious and service was amazing. The waiter (Neal) gave us awesome recommendations and had a very hospitable and generous nature. My favorite items included the baked bbq buns, lava salted egg buns, and spinach and enoki dumplings. If you really like spicy food definitely recommend pork and shrimp dumplings with noodles. Also don’t forget dessert - see photo. Very traditional and very delish. Will definitely return!!
I am writing this review before we even finish our meal. The food is so good . Each dish has been delicious. Sam the manager and all of the crew are amazing. It is the best Dim Sum we have ever had. Make sure you get BBQ Pork Buns and the Crispy Shrimp Rd Rice Rolls. Pork and Shrimp Dumplings in the most amazing spicy sauce. The food quality and prices are amazing
The environment is clean and well-maintained, with a great atmosphere that makes the whole place feel very comfortable. The staff are extremely friendly, and the food is served quickly. The dishes taste excellent! Each dish has its own unique character. The restaurant offers great value for money and is definitely a place you’d want to come back to. I’ve already recommended it to friends and will return to try more dishes. Highly recommended!
Tim Ho Wan in Irvine has recently completed a renovation, and the updated space is clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed. The atmosphere now feels much more refined and comfortable, making it a pleasant place for a relaxed meal. The dim sum was excellent, classic selections, served hot and fresh, with well-balanced flavors and consistent quality across dishes. Service was prompt and organized even during busy hours. A solid option for dim sum in Orange County, especially if you’re looking for a space that feels polished and contemporary.
We had a great lunch here. I’ve been to their other location a few years ago and I swear the food got better. I don’t remember the siu mai being as big and juicy last time. It was sooooo delicious. The congee was warm and comforting and the bbq crispy pork buns were amazingggg. I am very sad they don’t have the custard filled sesame balls anymore. Those were one of my favorites in the past. We had several people checking on us throughout our meal and everyone was very polite. The restaurant and restroom were both very clean and nicely decorated. I will be back here next time I am back in Cali!
After seeing so many glowing reviews since their December 16th grand reopening—and loving their NYC location—I had to visit. Even in soft opening mode, they’ve absolutely hit it out of the park. With a little grace as they finish training, this could easily become the best dim sum in OC, maybe even SoCal. Highlights: 1. Space – The new dining room is spacious, beautifully designed, and blends Hong Kong/Chinese/Singapore influences with a modern OC vibe. 2. Service – Warm, thoughtful, and genuinely passionate. Bryan stood out with a true spirit of excellence—professional, enthusiastic, and a natural fit for luxury hospitality. Rich paced my meal perfectly so each dish arrived hot and enjoyable—huge difference. Travis kindly helped with my take-home sauces (much appreciated!). Josh (possibly a manager) was thoughtful and eager for feedback. A few small service hiccups, but totally understandable during soft opening. 3. Food – A massive improvement across the board. You can feel the care in the kitchen. Standouts included the pork & shrimp dumplings in chili oil (save that oil—it’s gold), xiao long bao with deep, rich broth, and the best baked BBQ pork buns I’ve ever had—fragrant, balanced, and unforgettable. The peach gum dessert was a refreshing finish (would love it thicker with coconut cream). One request: Please add cucumbers to the menu—this is a must! Overall, a fantastic experience and one I’m excited to revisit. Pls search for my yelp review for all the details (google has a character limitation).
First time ever at a Tim Ho Wan. Came in on a weekend Sunday evening. Service was great staff is supper attentive checking in when they see our table empty. They are fast about picking up empty dishes on the table and quick to refill anything you need. Seating was quick and easy. Food was delicious! we got the shrimp dumpling, pork&shrimp dumplings, bbq pork buns, pork ribs with black bean sauce, red rice rolls, xiao long bao, and sesame ball with dark chocolate and white chocolate. Although some were different than classic dim sum all was delicious. Although true to what I know dim sum it is not traditional. Everything was made with intent and it shows. Also fastest service I have ever had anywhere. Would recommend only thing is price is little more than I would normally pay and that it is not traditional dim sum.
Came here today for the **soft opening** of Tim Ho Wan's relaunch. For all the hype I saw online, there's definitely still some kinks to work out before their grand opening. 👩🏻🍳 SERVICE: I found all the staff to be incredibly friendly but they were still working out their system. The online ordering app has a "call server" function but it never alerted our server or got them to our table. There was some mix-ups with our teas and the staff was nice enough to give us a pot on the house as a thank you for our patience. I am sure that the service will improve as the team gets more experience together. 🕔 LINES: We came on Christmas Day and only waited about 20 minutes in line before the opening at 11:30. Plan accordingly and get in line early! 🥟 FOOD: I liked *most* dishes we tried. The best was the fried silken tofu bites and the spicy dumplings. The spinach enoki dumplings were beautiful in presentation but left something to be desired in flavor. The barbecue pork was great, meat was soft and had a great sauce. 🌟 OVERALL: Great interior with a friendly staff, I would definitely come back once the opening kinks have been worked out. This was also pretty affordable, ~$30/pp incl. tax+tip. Looking forward to updating the review!
The food was excellent, however the service really let this place down. Not sure what kind of system they have going but it did not work. We waiting 2 hours for our food. The waiters constantly checked in on us and acknolegded our food was missing, but as every table around us were served and eventually cleaned and left, we were still left waiting for or food. Until finally, 2 hours later, our food arrived. This wasn't just our table, there were several other tables who had the same issue, some of which called it quits.
