Spicy Asian Ithaca Reviews
I love this place so much!! Been going here every time I'm in Ithaca for 12 years now. Always delicious food, and not "American" Chinese food, but REAL Chinese food. The staff are all very friendly & accommodating, no matter your spice palette. Hands down the best Chinese restaurant in the entire southern tier & finger lakes region!
Great Asian food in the area! Great service despite being very busy!
Pretty authentic Chinese food, especially of the Szechuan cuisine. One cool thing about Spicy Asian is that they can accommodate larger groups than other Chinese spots in Ithaca. We came here with around 20 people after church, and they had no problem serving us all! 🍽️
If you can handle some spice, get Szechuan beef with dry fried potato! The beef is very tender on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside. You can ask them to make it less spicy, too.
The last comment guy is a review bot. His name is Hans Nielsen. What he is saying is not true. He wrote the same comment under fews other local restaurants. I was dining in last Friday night, and we stayed around 10:06. They didn't ask us to leave because it passed their hours.
I am a delivery driver and just had a bizarre (never happened prior) Grubhub hiccup, which left me and the restaurant unsure how to proceed.... but with their patience and undeniable exceptional customer service, the food was remade in NO time and I was still able to complete my delivery! (Not to mention, the customer added another $10 to my tip! :-)) I will ABSOLUTELY be ordering from Spicy Asian next time I'm in the mood for take out.... top notch!
Spicy Asian is my favorite asian restaurant in Ithaca, a title the Golden Dragon vacated when it closed in 1994. S.A. features wide variety of styles, all well prepared. Many dishes rely on an oily brown sauce that I've not run into elsewhere; it's good but, too much, not so much. Unlike most upstate NY asian restaurants, the menu has many dishes that are not run-of-the-mill Chinese-American food. Yay! Even if you won't try them, you can see what they are by visiting other tables. It's very much a family-run place and its nice to be recognized after you've eaten there a few times. May I recommend: the "soups-for-4" make a great meal for one. Seafood soup and Zhong's dumplings: great combo. Noodle soup w/ pork and hot pepper is filling and great for a chilly day. The salt-and-pepper shrimp is a taste and tactile delight. Visit frequently and work your way thru the menu. You'll be glad you did.
Just dropped off our daughter at college and we were hungry from all the lifting! We wanted something relatively healthy that wasn’t too heavy. Spicy Asian was great! We got fried dumplings (ok, maybe not the healthiest 😝) and were so delicious - it didn’t taste oily and they might be homemade? My husband and I shared the chicken, beef and shrimp with broccoli in garlic sauce and it was amazing. I overheard the waitress tell another table that they make their own egg rolls, so had to try that! It was very tasty (I would have preferred some meat in it but it tasted very light-perfect amount of wrapper where some places have it too thick. Excited to take my daughter here when we come visit!
This is a great place to get Sichuan food in Ithaca. I really enjoyed all their dishes. Their lamb was great. Their whole fish was very tender. I loved the egg drop soup. We had some dumplings in spicy sauce which was yummy. And the potato’s in their stir-fried shredded potato dish was crispy and savory. The service was good. We went during a weekend evening in the summer and the place was not busy. The service was prompt. Note: Not all of the staff speaks Mandarin. The first waitress we did spoke Mandarin but we had another person who served our table who did not. The inside of the restaurant is like a typical Chinese restaurant. There is also plenty of tables and seating inside. There is a parking lot outside the restaurant so we parked there. We did not have trouble finding parking (albeit we didn’t go when it was very busy).
It was very good. Ma-Po sauce is on the right track(Those who know Ma-Po would know what I mean) Shredded pork with bunch of shredded veggies and bean curd was nicely done. Stir fried pea sprouts were excellent. Hot and sour soup was very tasty as well. We also got the fried ice cream which was the best I've had from Broome county to Ithaca area, because they used a thin layer of cake instead of heavily coated coconut bits to cover the ice cream before frying. That provides some crunchiness but not as hard and tough to cut or chew through as fried coconut flakes. My 3 yo enjoyed the food as much asI did. The price was great. The service was good. There wasn't a changing table in the lady's room, but the long bench probably could work as one if I'd got desperate.
Enjoyed the food for the most part. The first time I went, the scallion pancakes were burnt, and the service can sometimes be hit or miss. But I enjoy their mapo tofu, it is quite tasty. Would generally recommend.
Nice to have some Sichuan food on our way through Ithaca. I wish they had more traditional options (as opposed to the popular American ones), but I understand that they have to sell the things that will keep them in business. (For instance, I would love 麻辣香锅!!) The pork belly sizzling pot was really good, and the Singapore noodles were spicy and they allowed us to get it vegetarian (though they also left out the egg and charged the same amount as the meaty dish). Tea is charged here, as is each additional bowl of white rice. Somewhat typical after covid, but I really wish that wasn't the case. I'm trying to avoid commenting directly on price because you can see portion size and price plainly in my pictures. They were very friendly and there are lots of menu options in general. A good 粥 would be a plus for me, as would 涼菜. But maybe the customer base isn't there (or you just ask for it, and it isn't on the menu 😁). Not a bad option for little Ithaca, but don't expect the stars lile you might get in larger cities (like Rochester -- Yummy Garden Hot Pot has it all!!).
Nice restaurant, very friendly staff. We ordered steamed dumplings, crispy duck with brown sauce and sezchuan green beans (not pictured) everything was piping hot and fresh, the duck was extremely crispy and delicious the only issue I had was canned mushrooms. The dumplings were good and the sauce was delicious. The sezchuan green beans were fresh and delicious! Covered In garlic but wasn't over powering at all. Delicious meal.
Food was okay, but nothing great or special. Portions were small. We were the only ones in the restaurant. The server was rude and had a bad attitude. When other customers arrived, they ended up leaving because the server was lecturing them. Not recommended, at least for a dine-in experience.
The food isn’t good. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you want authentic Chinese food. We ordered the beef in hot sauce, beef and radish casserole and a vegetable dish. The two meat dishes were way too salty. The beef in hot sauce was a huge letdown. It tasted nothing but saltiness. The casserole dish had pretty good flavors but also very salty. The beef and radishes were nice and tender. Did I mention it was too salty? Service is bare minimum as you would expect in most similar Chinese restaurants.
Worst Kung Pao chicken I’ve ever had — it tasted old, like it had been triple-fried and reheated. The fried rice came with no vegetables at all, just bland and greasy. The service was equally bad. The older man at the counter was extremely rude. He insisted there were no lunch specials even though it wasn’t yet 3pm. When we specifically requested “less oil and less peanuts,” he didn’t even bother to note it down or communicate it to the kitchen. To make things worse, he asked, “How is everything?” and when we honestly said the Kung Pao was bad, he dismissed it with, “Nobody else said so.” Then why even ask for feedback if you’re not willing to listen or make it right? Overall: terrible food, careless service, and no respect for customers. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
