El Torero Jackson Reviews
Best Mexican food in town weather we are dining in or getting it to go. The food is always on point. My family and I aways enjoy the friendly wait staff and atmosphere.
This place is my new favorite Mexican restaurant. The food and service were absolutely amazing. The heartland special with steak is so good and it's so much food that my boyfriend and I were able to split the dish and still got more than enough to fill up on. If you have not visited El Torero I highly advise you do.
Ricardo was our server. He was extremely polite, professional, and very attentive. His appearance was also very neat. He's a great representative of this establishment and makes you desire to visit again. The quality of the food was also excellent! Although I was extremely full I found it quite difficult to stop because it really was very delicious! 🍽🌮🌯🥗❤ The atmosphere and cleanliness inside of the restaurant was also very pristine. My family and I will most definitely visit this restaurant again.
The food is excellent at this location, and all staff are like family to us, they go overboard to serve us, We love them
Best Mexican in the Jackson area. Their food is very good. I have lived in Jackson all my life and I can say that they are the best. The food and the drinks are amazing and the staff is very helpful. Would suggest to all of my friends.
Very good for a lunch buffet. I was impressed. Usually on a buffet they "skimp" and put out the cheaper, simpler items, but this place had a great selection. Also the wait staff is very friendly and attentive. I didn't have to wait for refills and they bused the empty plates away quickly.
Nice atmosphere, buffet action. The chips and salsa aren't the best I've ever had but I'm ok with that since I eat too much and almost don't have room for the main entrée. Everything I've had there was awesome but a special nod for the chorizo. It's among the best I've ever had.
This is our favorite Mexican restaurant of all time!! They have great family deals that supposedly only feed four people, but the amount of food you get could easily feed five or six people. So much food for a great price! My wife and I can easily split one order of their Heartland Special (with jalapeños, of course!). Best Mexican restaurant in Southeast Missouri!!
Wonderful experience all around. We came in late with a party of six, including three kids. The food was great and our waitress was amazing. I didn't catch her name, but she was on top of her game. Will definitely be back.
Excellent food ,seasoned well but not hot ! Salsa on table set my mouth on fire ;,yes it was hot ! I ordered guacamole and i loved it ! It had chunks of avocado so soft &fresh. I love the chips w/ the guacamole &a fresh squeeze of lemon ! The staff were all helpful & there for everything we needed. Hubby & I had a wonderful meal ! You truly walk away happy with the way we were treated with respect! Plenty of food ! We walked out very full and pleased with our dining experience!!! Thumbs up all the way !!! Thank You El Torero Mexican Restaurant in Jackson !!!
Ordered dinner in for Valentine's day. Used door dash. Very prompt, very nice delivery lady. Food was VERY generous. Actually enough for 2 meals. Chimichanga meals were delicious. Everything was fresh...Loved the rice and beans. Everything was flavorful. Salsa was a little bit spicy for my palate but would have been good if I could have eaten it. That's just me tho. Would recommend to others. It was great to not get out in such bitter cold weather. Thank you.
Great food and nice staff. We have both eaten in and gotten to go. The most recent visit, the weather allowed us to enjoy outdoor seating - not much of a view (Jackson Blvd,/Hwy 61), but it was pleasant out.
I read allot of reviews Bout this location at first I was kinda concerned based on the reviews. I hope this clears up some. The food is great. It is cooked in a style to compete with mid american palletes. If you like the heat like I do ask for grilled peppers and add that to your food or tell them add spice and peppers. Its good food you should go here and eat. As far as the price for two people we fed two people and had left overs for 30 dollars. I can't get that fron bk or mcd and the foods way better than taco bell.
This visit was Sunday evening before the eclipse. They were busy as you could expect more so since Don Carlos closed at 6pm. They kept us supplied with fresh chips and untill the food arrived.
Great food. Restaurant is nice and clean. The staff is very friendly. Ordered takeout previously and got home and didn't have half of my food. Came back to pick up the rest and they gave us extra chips and salsa and 8 free tacos. Great customer service all the way around.
Always have a good experience at El Torero in Jackson! Personally think they have the best salsa! I’m a big fan of their fajitas. My husband always orders the street tacos. And of course, our favorite, the margaritas. Without a doubt, the best margaritas in Jackson and cape.
Been twice. 1st time was great. Food very good & well prepared. Service was good with a male server. Possibly a family member or owner. 2nd time - inexperienced female server. Lacked basic skills of taking care of customers. Food was good. Her poor service detracted. Just needs training. Update: Been back three times since. Haven't seen that particular server. Service & food great. We will keep coming back!! Nice place.
Lovely food & fantastic service! Spicy salsa is good for a change. One of the best lunch specials I've had around!
We stopped here on our way home to Memphis from Saint Louis. The server was super friendly and fun, and the enchiladas mango was my Dream Mexican Meal. It was huge, creamy, and delicious. Had enough leftover for lunch today, AND it’s just as yummy. Highly recommend swinging by here.

This is the potion size of a chicken and chorizo quesadilla. The best ever! ✨😋😊 Amazing food. I'll be back!
Food was some of the best I have eaten. Drinks were perfect. We had a long island 🏝 ice tea and a margarita on the rocks. Both were superb. The mix didn't leave that overly sour taste, and the sweet was just right. Could be a bit cleaner, but the food and service was perfect.
Our waiter was the coolest guy ever and had the BEST recommendations! Everything we ordered was delicious and so were the chips and salsa. Can’t wait to come back!
Whoever ESSA is was the best service me and my son ever had! He was on it tonight making sure we were good! Thank you ESSA
This is going to be a review unlike any other I have written. I started off with a regular house margarita, I recommend that you do too! Chips and salsa were brought to the table immediately. Nice! The food was wonderful!!! LOL, but it wasn't what I ordered... I was in an adventurous mood and ate what was placed before me. I kinda felt bad for my server. I'm not sure that my he spoke much English. I think he might have but he did not engage in conversation, even though I came in alone and was open to it. I tried Spanish... He gave me a strange look. My Spanish is not bad. But that did not engage him either. He clearly liked his manager as they playfully joked, which speaks something very positive to me. Happy workers! And this restaurant has some very authentic meals!!! You can get anything here. Made me feel like I was south of the boarder. The staff is predominantly Hispanic which I found to be a plus. The whole atmosphere took me back to days of my youth. I will try other restaurants as is my regular routine, but I am very inclined to return to El Torero!
My family stopped by here along the way on a trip. The ambience of the restaurant is friendly, with comfortable booths. Our server was a hoot - he started out speaking Spanish, and when he got blank stares from our table, we were able to laugh about it, and he switched to English. We learned quite a bit about our server and the restaurant, as he had some free time and chatted with us. I always appreciate someone who shows their personality (I don't mind eating while being spoken to), and it made the dining experience even better. Because we had to get back on the road, we were conscious of time, and even with the chatting, the service was so fast that we were able to get back on the road in a reasonable amount of time. The prices are fair, too. We really enjoyed ourselves!
Service by Ricardo was excellent! Food was delicious! Prices were very affordable. We will be back.
This is our new favorite spot! Huge portions at phenomenal prices. Tastes amazing! Can't figure out why everyone goes to the Mexican restaurant across the street, when El Torero is more affordable, tastes better, and the service is exceptional. Plus the biggest glasses I've ever seen!
When I'm down home around Jackson Cape Girardeau area got to stop in El torero! Everything I have gotten there has been really delicious and hot one of my favorite Mexican restaurants around the area and you're getting your money's worth!

I have been here 3 times. Always before 12noon. Waiters and waitresses have been nice. Buffet stocked and food very good. You can ask for anything from the buffet that has run low or out, and they bring it. Price is good for buffet. Restaurant is clean.
Food was amazing. Family friendly. They have an awesome lunch buffet with most of your favorites. It is fairly affordable and includes a soft drink. Great place to go if you're in a hurry for lunch, everything's already prepared and ready.
The three of us were seated at a table, not a booth. They brought out our water in cold frosty mugs, which was really terrific! The chips and salsa followed, and the salsa was just okay, not very spicy…the chips are thicker than I am used to, as well. The food was good, but the queso was very watery. I think we prefer the food at La Luna or Don Carlos more. As for the service, it was good when we came in, and the food was brought to us quickly, but the waiter never came back to check on us...he just brought us the check before we finished. The place was pretty empty, too, so no excuse for not stopping by our table during our lunch. And, as far as the atmosphere, the seat cushions were dirty and a fly kept bothering us. It was annoying.
The atmosphere and booth that I was sat at was soo nice. I felt very comfortable. The menu is huge and the font is small on the dinner combo list. The server was quick and pleasant. The pollo fundido was a dish I had never tried... It was well made but now I know that it is not something I will order again. That is just me going out of my comfort zone so it is likely an amazing dish to those who order it knowing what they are getting lol.

Great food and decent prices
Food was delicious as always. I had the shrimp cancun tacos 😋 Service seemed a little rushed and a server had her elbow rested on the back of our booth above my head for a few minutes which was a little unsettling but she moved it shortly after realizing. Overall we had a great time and will be back again.

I didn't really enjoy the atmosphere in this building. I felt like they just threw odd decor together and called it good. The food was okay... I did not leave the building feeling satisfied. The cheese sauce that they put on my quesadilla was almost like queso. My husband ordered the nachos and it had the same sauce. I would have thought the cheese would have been more authentic and not feeling like it came out of a can.
My husband and I were planning to go to another Mexican restaurant on the same road, but judging on outsides, we came here, where the outside walls were stone and there was a bull statue. The service was great (polite and friendly), and the chips and salsa were promising of a good meal to come. Although the chips seemed a little stale, it didn’t affect the taste (and maybe they are just a thicker chip) and the salsa was really good. Good consistency and the right amount of heat on the back end. Unfortunately, the flavor hit its high point with the salsa. I ordered the El Torero burrito, since it’s usually a good move to go with a dish named after the restaurant. It was an el pastor (pork) burrito with third covered in green sauce, third in cheese sauce and third in red sauce. Neither sauce had much flavor or heat. The pork did have a good flavor, but it got lost in all the tomatoes, onions and peppers it was cooked with. Although I like that mix of veggies in my burrito, some bites had much more of that than the pork. My husband got the Jalisco special, which had steak, chicken and shrimp with big chunks of tomatoes, onions and green peppers. Although he said everything was cooked well, it didn’t have much flavor. Another case of Mexican food being made less delicious for midwestern palates. A shame. I have a feeling these cooks can probably cook much better food for their families.

The stuffed burrito with chicken was flavorless, I nearly sent it back. My cousin let me try his food that had steak and the it tasted amazing. Knowing that I don't think I'll order the chicken ever again. I visit MO from time to time. Also, with my group my one of us wanted a tequila sunrise but they said they were out of orange juice. Then I tried to order a virgin pina colada and they said they were out of pina colada. I just didn't understand why they were not stocked on a Friday night. It wasn't even late. Not the best experience.
Atmosphere was beautiful, but food didn’t have hardly any spice or flavor. Our server was doing too much and mansplained the menu to us. I didn’t like my margarita the first time (it was brown?) so I asked him to make me another one with top shelf. He charged a dollar more for top and made his own concoction he came up with instead of the margarita. It had way too much alcohol and I didn’t feel well after from having god knows how many liquors were mixed in there. Still giving three stars because I only visited once and I’m not from here so I know my expectations are different from locals.
Some staff can't understand English at all. Tried telling them the water is off in bathroom faucet. Charged us for cheese dip that was thin and bland as plain milk. Black beans are mushed up like refried ones. Ckn texture was spongy like tofu. At least salsa was better this time. When they asked was it good, and gave honest, tactful reply, they didn't care

Ordered Heartland Special to feed 4, got home and had no shells. Called the restaurant and they apologized and asked if we could come back to get them. We live a mile or so from the restaurant so no big deal, my husband went up there. I clearly told the woman we ordered a heartland and received no shells. They gave my husband a bag with 2 foil packs with 3 shells each! Seriously rethinking ordering from this location again, the last couple times we have ordered has been messed up.
Was given the wrong food even after the person on the phone read it back to me twice. Super frustrating to get home and find out you didn’t get what you ordered. Food wasn’t even that good. Less than average I’d say. My bag of chips was less than half full as well. For $25 I’d go somewhere else.
Good solid food. Nothing extraordinary but good. Update.. last night (04-16-2023) picked up fajitas.. we were quite disappointed. I ordered the cheese dip, and it got left out. Our food had very little flavor, I've never had bland Mexican before.. it's pretty disappointing.
We used to live in MO and would frequent El Torero. We have not visited in over a year as we moved to KY. The last time we visited, the food was amazing and we LOVED the buffet they had. When we drove by, I was super excited about having lunch there. We stopped in around 1 pm on a Friday, the old El Torero would have been packed at this time of day. We walked in and unfortunately there was no buffet, we decided to go ahead and order since it was good before they had a buffet. The chips and salsa came out and the salsa tasted like tomatoes and jalapeño. It was so spicy even my spicy lovers had a hard time eating it. I expect good salsa to have some cilantro, lime and onion flavor in it, but this was horrible. We ordered some cheese dip to soften the salsa so it was edible. The cheese dip didn't have much flavor either, but it did tame down the salsa. We order a burrito, steak fajitas and chicken cheese and rice. The chicken cheese and rice was super bland, my daughters fajitas were the same and her refried beans were so hard you had to cut into them with a fork. They tasted horrible, i tried them because she hadn't touched them and I spit them out. They were crusty and the cheese on top of them looked like it was days old and not even melted. When we received our ticket, we checked to make sure our cheese dip was free because the restaurant advertised the dip was free with a $20 purchase during the "happy hour". It was not free and we had to ask for it to be taken off the bill. I was very disappointed to spend $30+ at this restaurant and I will not come back. I was informed by my brother who used to work there that management had left and opened a Mexican restaurant in Benton, MO called La Lunada. We will be going there from now on when we visit. Should have known the place was going down hill when they were offering free cheese dip and happy hour 6 days of the week. Do not go here, you will be sadly disappointed!
We ordered from here for my daughters birthday because we all love it. We've been eating here for years. When we got our order it was wrong and missing items. When I call the manager said he would issue a refund. I played phone tag with him for three weeks before finally speaking to him about he offered a credit so we reordered. When we got there to pick it up he acted like he had no idea what I was talking about. We had to order again and when we got home our order was missing items and wrong again. We won't be going back. The service has seriously gone down hill.
Service was impeccable very polite very accommodating I asked if they had Mellow Yellow she brought me Mountain Dew to most people that's the same thing but I don't like Mountain Dew because Mello Yello is a little sweeter and smoother so it's no big deal just so you no though if you don't have it say you don't we asked for a more Milder salsa and they brought us spaghetti sauce like canned or Jarred spaghetti sauce that had been heated up in a bowl I asked for guacamole and I got a mashed up avocado with nothing else in it their enchilada Supreme tasted like dirty pan and don't even get me started on their tamales it's not the worst tamale I've ever had but it's like the third worst and I have probably tried 30 different restaurants tamales they're in the bottom five for sure

I used to eat here a lot…but stopped after they constantly messed up my order. I will only go when I’m with friends and they want to go. We all joke tho about how they will mess my order up, and then often do. It’s unreal. It just got old after awhile. I’ve gotten to the point where I’d rather drive to Cape and get what I actually ordered, than deal with messed up orders…hence why I stopped going. It’s a shame because I spend a lot of money on Mexican food, and their food is usually pretty good.
Expensive - Do Not Go Here for Takeout Charged $24 for 2 Mini bags of Chips, 2 Salsas, and 1 Queso. They didn't mention price when I ordered or I'd have canceled. I was charged for a meal of 2 people. Better if I'd gone inside and had a meal. I understand charging a standard price but this is a rip off. Inside service might be different but for pickup avoid this place. Try across the street I'd say.
I have given this place a chance on several occasions to up there service. On numerous times I had to practically beg them to bring me a drink. There food here has went downhill as well. It’s like I am bothering them if I take a moment to decide what I want to eat and god forbid you need anything after you get your food. My ticket… I had to just go to check out to pay— I always tipped them because I know that’s the industry’s standard but … I am just over feeling like I am the problem. If you don’t want to work don’t show up you are running off your customers
I ordered on door dash and payed for cheese dip to get a sample cup. When I called to complain all I got was an I sorry. Never any ways to fix my experience. I will never go there again.
