New Shanghai Restaurant Lake Forest Reviews
Went for a takeout and it was ready within 25 minutes at the latest whoch was really quick. The food was great, and the Chow Mein actually had a lot of noodles. Their menu is really d8verse, so I will definitely come back and explore it a bit more
After at least a dozen visits, I've been impressed with their consistency. Big fan of the mushu vegetable and duck dishes! The food is delicious and reasonably priced, plus the service is always friendly. So glad to have this takeout option throughout quarantine and beyond.
We've never actually eaten inside here; we always get delivery or pickup and it's always been great. Their prices are relatively low (they ARE a restaurant, not the steam-tray kind of quick-meal Chinese place), and usually very quick. They always tell us that our food will take an hour to be delivered, but more often it's at our place within half that. Sometimes they even throw in some cream cheese wontons for free! I'll really miss this place, now that I've moved away.
Been there forever, but keeps quality up. Good lunch menu as well as good selection for dinner. I like Shrimp king pao or moo shoo. Last time there I was disappointed to have to pay $11 for pork fried rice. Way out if line for the rest of the menu.
First time here. The food was really good and their prices are very reasonable, lower than many other similar restaurants. Service, from my experience, was very good, too. The restaurant is not fancy by any means but it has a very relaxed atmosphere. And no, I'm not getting freebies for good reviews, I just like to give good credit where it is rightfully due.
An unassuming place with unassuming food. This place is legit. The staff are very friendly, the prices are great, and the portions are perfect. The Chow Fun here is better than anywhere else that I've had it in all of south County, as is the mapo tofu. Will definitely be back!
My family has been coming to New Shanghai for years and years. The owner (who knows us well) has always had an enthusiastic attitude and is always pleasant to the patrons. The tea is wonderful (if that's your thing like it is ours) and the food is consistently good. This restaurant is only a few minutes from my work and located in a quiet plaza so it's easy to get in and out on my lunch break with some paper wrapped chicken.
As a family we have been going to New Shanghai for 16 years, my husband has been going for over 20. I was raised on the east coast and found this to be the best representation of the Chinese food I love. Not greasy, but perfectly seasoned. Our favorites are the House Chicken and BBQ pork fried rice, as well as the Orange Chicken and Beef & Broccoli. Everyone we take here instantly falls in love. We thank Anna and her family for running such a customer-focused business and making us feel so loved in your business.
Stopped by on my way through town and it was the best food I ate my entire trip! Very friendly and fast service, with amazing food. It was so good, I had to get take out to take home to my family! 10/10 would recommend!
First time eating here. Enjoyed the food. The orange chicken wasn't prepared how I'm used to at other restaurants. But everything else was delicious.
We have been going to New Shanghai for over 25 years and by far the best Chinese restaurant around! The consistency, quality and personal care has never failed. When we have friends over who want Chinese food, we don't hesitate to go here. Dine in or take out -the experiience is great!
Love this place. The owners and staff are extremely kind and friendly. The food is delicious, the servings are generous, and the prices are affordable. I used to come here all the time when I used to live in LF. Next time I'm in the area, I'll be sure to swing by.
Best Chinese food ever! My family and I have been coming here for over 20 plus years and we would never go anywhere else to get Chinese food! Amazing food and amazing people who work here!! Anne and family are the most amazing people we have ever met! You must try!! Best Chinese food there is!! Thank you for everything you all do we love you guys!! 💕🥰🥳😁😋
I have ordered both pick up and dine in. The food and service has been great both times. Everyone is friendly and the portions are great! My husband and i always have left overs and we eat alot. The family dinner is reasonable priced with a variety. They also offer delivery if you live close by. Unfortunately i dont live in delivery range. That being said i make the drive from aliso viejo because i like the food that much. Thank you New shanghai!
We have loved this place for years. Very yummy food. House, Orange, and Lemon chicken are my favorites. Complete meal gives soup, appetizers and tea as well. We still drive over sometimes even though it's no longer our area. Still our favorite Chinese.
New Shanghai is excellent and checks all the boxes -- delicious, fresh food, reasonably priced, small local, family-owned business, and great customer service. No delivery fees and food arrives piping hot. Mongolian beef and shrimp with string beans are the best (and low carb!!)...house fried rice and wonton soup are also favorites. Highly recommended!!!
I've been coming here for 12+ years. The food is amazing and the prices are fair. The service is always good. This place has had the same owner for almost 30 years. I LOVE eating here. The atmosphere is quiet and casual but not shabby at all. I've done many a date here and not a single one of them has complained.
Food was very good. I could see where it was more takeout than customers eating in the restaurant. But all in all, it was very good and I will go back.
I've been coming here for over 20 years. The food is consistently good and reasonably priced. I really miss seeing the owner (Anna) at the store, though everything is kept up to her exacting standards, even in her absence.
Top notch service and great food. I’ve been ordering here for years and they haven’t missed. My go to is the house special chicken. Their service matches their food quality. I messed up and grabbed the wrong order and they did everything to fix my mistake, refund my order, and get me on my way. Really great people.
Appearance doesn't say too much as the flavors are great. I even really enjoyed their complementary egg drop soup.
Just what I was expecting and more, Tasty food, good ambiance, good service they were very attentive. Definitely I’ll come back here. Big portions perfect whenever you are really hungry for Chinese food! Easy Parking access
No skimping here. Ordered the house special noodle soup since the image on the menu looked good. Food in the image = food served. Service was great and so was the pricing!
One of my favorite spots in OC. The food is always good and priced well. Would highly recommend the chicken fried rice and house special beef.
New Shangai has lovely Chinese food (I love the egg foo young). My family has ordered food and dined in for years - family business, great service.

I have been coming here since I was 13. I'm 37 this year. We live far away now but my whole family will drive any length for just one meal here. The staff feel like aunties and remember u. The food is the best quality. Never disappoints.
Love the ladies that cook here for 20+ years & all are delicious! This is lake forest best Chinese food hands down, get over the rice ting for those that get outraged, it’s only $2.00 it’s okay splurge! I love this place!
For me, this is the best Chinese restaurant in Lake Forest by a long way. The food is fresh and flavorful, the staff is super nice and helpful, and orders are usually ready pretty fast. New Shanghai never disappoints. Five stars all day!

The food was delicious, but it was hard to enjoy our dinner because they had both doors open and it was REALLY cold outside. We asked if the doors could be closed and the waitress smiled and nodded, but the doors stayed open. Regardless, the food was great so we just ate quickly and left. We will return in warmer weather 😎
Nice little place about 4miles from 405freeway. All 10 of us enjoyed our family style food, so much so, we are everything. No take home leftovers. Definitely a must revisit place. 👍👍🤗
The service is friendly. The food tastes fresh and sauces are very good. Lunch special is a great value. Love the house chicken. The kids like the food as well. Located near the sports park and Foothill Ranch town center.
Do you have that restaurant you go back to years later the core memory flavors are still present when you visit again? This is the restaurant for me! I've been going here for years due to my family living in the area. It is tradition to either go to the restaurant or get take out. The hot mustard and sweet and sour sauces on the tables were always a highlight. I do wish they had more vegan alternatives but they do a pretty decent job. Highly recommend! Support local!
Like many startup restaurants, you can tell they are getting on their feet with their seating area and atmosphere. However, if you were looking for great Chinese food in the Lake Forest, foothill Ranch area this place is where it’s at. You can call ahead and get your order ready for takeout or eat in. The service is great and the people are very friendly.

After reading the reviews, I’m not sure if I just had a one-off experience. I ordered two chicken entrees, one was mostly vegetables with hardly any chicken, and the other chicken which was breaded, was very hard and crunchy. The flavor for everything was good, but probably wouldn’t order again, based off this experience.
recommended to us by the people at Power Cleaners (which we also like), just next door. very good food, reasonable prices, friendly and courteous service. my only negative is that they use Square for payment, which I don't like. But, we'll be back. Brittany Mauer-I don't disagree completely with your comment, but this place is better than others we've tried in the area. We ate there again recently and ordered a scallop dish. The scallops were apparently added in at the last minute into a pre-prepared sauce. There was little mixing of flavors, quite disappointing. But as I say the other places we've tried in the Lake Forest area are worse.
Went here as a last minute decision. The service from the employees was fantastic! As for the food, it’s ok! I had the orange chicken and white rice. Nothing out of the ordinary, the quantity of the orange chicken is good for the price though.
Located in a strip mall off Lake Forest Boulevard, New Shanghai Restaurant is described as a “warm, relaxed eatery…featuring ample Chinese classics.” We visited for dinner on a Sunday evening and when we first arrived after 7pm, we were the only customers in the entire restaurant. However it was apparent New Shanghai is the local Chinese food spot because several parties arrived after and there were numerous takeout orders during our visit. Their menu is fairly extensive, but I wouldn’t describe the Chinese cooking style as especially traditional. In fact the target audience appears to be primarily for Americans. We started with the Sizzling Rice Soup (not pictured) followed by the Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce, Mapo Tofu, House Special Chow Mein and Mu Shu Pork. Everything was good but not great. In all my years, I’ve never had Mu Shu Pork that was already wrapped. Some dishes were too sweet and others too salty. Regardless, it’s good to see that New Shanghai Restaurant seems to have consistent business, and I wish them all the best!

Overall an okay experience, wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here. We ordered the honey walnut shrimp, chow mein, and string beans chicken. The shrimp felt and tasted reheated not hot throughout even though I grabbed a bite as soon as it came out, walnuts tasted old(2/5).The string bean to chicken ratio was off again the food wasn’t hot like when coming off a pan (3/5) the chow mein was the best (5/5). Customer service was good. But, I don’t think $60 was worth it, in my opinion could get better food elsewhere and probably spend less.
At least the staff were friendly. We ordered a little over $75 worth of food just so we could try an assortment of items. The egg foo young and cream cheese wontons were average, everything else was very bland. I will not be going back. Almost forgot! We ordered General Tso's chicken and received sub-par orange chicken. 2.5 stars

This place is fine if you do not like real Chinese food. The food I had here was so flavorless and bland it reminded me of food fed to kids not ready for real Chinese food. If you want real Chinese food, I would suggest almost any other Chinese restaurant down the road in Irvine. 2 stars because the service and owners are nice--as I understand they have to cater to the tastes of their predominantly non-Asian clientele, but this place is the furthest thing from authentic Chinese food...
I ate here with my mother-in-law. It was close to her house so we picked this restaurant based on convenience. When we arrived, the sound system was playing static and no one made a move to fix/turn it off until we asked about it. The service was okay, but nothing to write home about. The food was very bland and decidedly lacking in protein content. (No shrimp in the shrimp dish.) This was probably in the bottom 20% of my Chinese restaurant experiences.
Unfortunately this was a big no for me, for portion size it was extremely expensive. The flavor also wasn't there I got the Mongolian beef and egg fried rice.
For almost $20 for each chicken dish I’m disappointed with the portion size. Ive dined in the actual restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by how much food you are given. That is what I was expecting tonight. I spent way too much money for these portions. Maybe I ordered wrong? The chicken dish on the bottom right hand side is smaller than the other for $18.99??!!! Don’t know if I will be ordering from here again.

The worst Chinese food if we believe it is Chinese!!! I have never eaten such strange and unreal Chinese food as a person who has a lot of experience in Chinese restaurants! Please don't waste people's time and money by the name New Shanghai Restaurant!!!
I read the reviews and saw the 4.2 stars so I decided to order. I honestly don't know how this place got 4 stars... The food is blah and the chicken was DRY!!! I ordered chicken and broccoli and there wasn't even any sauce on it... Just chicken, broccoli and carrots... Very very strange.. And the potstickers were pork when the website said chicken.. And they were so badly burnt I couldn't even eat them I just threw them in the trash... AVOID THIS PLACE PLEASE ITS NOT WORTH THE WAIT OR THE MONEY!!!
I have never eaten such discusting chinese food in my life. I paid 33 dollars for garbage. If i could give a ZERO, I would.! I would not recommend this place at all. Stay away.
The Orange peel chicken had no discernible chicken at all, just small pieces of breading. No included rice. No sauce on the side. Nothing but inedible bits that I wouldn’t feed to a stray dog.

This place is supposed to be among the top 10 Chinese restaurants in Lake forest. In my opinion it is in the top 10 worst Chinese restaurants anywhere. My fried rice was Stone Cold and I picked it up very very soon after I ordered. The ingredients did not seem to be fresh and the shrimp and beef and chicken were minimal. The the soup I ordered was mediocre at best. I would drive much further for much better food. Sorry but that's my opinion.
After ordering through door dash, had order accepted, waited almost an hour, then they canceled the order, stating they couldn't fulfill the order... When I called to talk to them, they said I could order through their website and still get the order... This seems ridiculous that they accepted it and already had me wait, only to cancel but still be able to fulfill other people's orders? Bad business... Won't be ordering from here again.
Do not order from them during a holiday rush. Orders were running over an hour late on Christmas Eve. I showed up when my order was supposed to be ready (an hour from when I ordered) and was told it would be another 25 minutes. I went in after 25 minutes and was told it would be another 25 minutes. I asked them to cancel my order, which I received a confirmation for, but they still charged me. Now I have to call and deal with it. Won’t be ordering from them again.
