Umma's K-BBQ Lake Forest Reviews
The food was perfect. Gluten free Korean BBQ??? Yes please. It’s been decades since I’ve had Korean spare ribs but not anymore! The bulgogi and the glass noodles were wonderful. Sweet and lots of sesame oil. If you don’t like sweet and salty meat, you might have a problem, but I loved it. I was surprised the broccoli was cold but I’m assuming that’s the way it is supposed to be. When in Rome. I also loved the fried fish. So many gluten free options and so little time. It’s a bit expensive but worth the price if you have the money or are doing something special like I did.
Friendly and helpful staff. The fish jun is my favorite thing to get but all the food I've had before is delicious. The sides are always fresh and tasty too. One of my go to Korean spots in South County.
Beef Bulgogi bowl with Korean Broccoli & Macaroni Salad was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Great food, Great Service! Order online and pick it up! Sooo good!!! My go to lunch spot when in the area!
Umma's K-BBQ in Lake Forest, CA, is an absolute gem. My friend raved about the delicious food, and I couldn’t agree more. Although there's no indoor seating, the outdoor dining area is small, but it’s an acceptable setup shared with some restaurants in a row. We always get our meals to go. The rewards program is fantastic. You'll receive text messages about 10%-30% discount deals regularly. My wife’s favorite dishes are the GF Kalbi/Beef Combo and the Katsu/Spicy Pork Combo, each served with 4 free sides. The portion sizes are generous. Next time you're in Lake Forest, CA, Umma's K-BBQ is the place to go!
First time trying and can say the food was great. Everything had flavor. Loved all the sides they offer as well, definitely a good eating spot. The cashier was helpful with showing on how to order properly.
I'm obsessed with this restaurant! Tonight, I tried the fish jun. Great flavor and texture, would try again! I haven't tried all the proteins yet, but my favorites so far are the bulgogi, the meat jun, and you can't go wrong with their kalbi. I recommend getting the combo plate so you can get two choices of protein. It's a large portion, so you can split the combo between two people, or have it as a second meal later. Unless you're like me and shamelessly eat the whole combo plate in one sitting. 😋 For the sides, I usually get the mac salad, chapchae (glass noodles), kimchi (it's probably one of my favorite sources of kimchi), and the fish cake. If I could afford to eat it every day, I would.
Absolutely amazing K-BBQ. A+ 10/10! Great portions. I've eaten here over a dozen times and every time it is phenomenal. The Spicy Pork is my go-to, Chicken Katsu second, and Beef Bulgogi third. The Fish Jun and Meat Jun are also very good, very authentic. I have not tried the Kal-Bi but fellow reviews attest it is also amazing. Their selection of Banchan is on point. I love the Kimchi, Korean Broccoli, Spicy Cucumber, Seaweed Salad, and of course their Mac Salad! Getting Chicken Katsu with all Mac Salad is soooo good. This is a mom 'n pop family run business. Last time I was in one of the owners said they were a Korean family from Hawaii, so that's why this food is so amazing, it's Korean/Hawaiian fusion come to the Mainland. I love places that do this, you're getting a mixture of culture in your dishes. You can taste the love and care with the food here. Support local small businesses and get some Umma's K-BBQ! Order online for quick pickup.
This is the first time I came here and I was so impressed with the taste and portion of their food! All freshly made and super tasty 😋! Love this place! Definitely will come back for more! Customer service is 😃 great. Very friendly staff! Forgot to take pictures until after I started eating 😂 so the box is not all full!
I'm a bit mad at myself for not reviewing this place sooner! First let me just say, I love how friendly everyone here is, it has a family business vibe to it, maybe it is? Second, I love the QUANTITY, VARIETY, and QUALITY of the food you get here for what I believe to be a very reasonable price. I think honestly you can split one order between two people. That's what I do when i am trying to be more healthy, but sometimes I let my dark passenger out and just eat the entire order myself :)
Owner was very hospitable. Offered a few salat samples so I could make me mind as to which 4 sides to chose. Got Katzu & Bulgogi. So much food, like she said some for tomorrow. Awesome. Not really a place to sit & eat unless you must. Then you can eat ur purchase.
Absolutely lovely restaurant. The food is incredible and I got to try a new cuisine and dishes. Everything was exceptional!
Umma's is amazing! It is so flavorful and plentiful. The meat is juicy. Always very satisfied!
Best Korean/Hawaiian food in Lake Forest. I'm scared they'll recognize me from often I come here so I dress and talk differently each time.
Food is alwsys consistantly tasty.
Oh yeah, this place is good
Really tasty take out Korean. They cook your food to order and the portions are really good. The spicy pork is a definite must. The banchan sides are pretty good, too. Business was pretty good when we went.
Food is always fresh and delicious with authentic flavor. Nice portion sizes and great meat/rice ratio.
Great for some quick food - good alternative to the sit down Korean places. Walked in for take out, ordered, and was out in 5 minutes. One order can feed 2 people. Will be going back to try the other items.
My husband and I enjoyed the meat jun plate. I was surprised by the amount of food! Everything we ordered, (cucumber kimchi, Korean broccoli, japchae, tofu,) was amazing! Meat Jun is something my mom used to make and it brought back childhood memories! We will be going back again to try their other dishes! Thanks Umma!
The food is delicious and the man at the register is always so nice!
Good Korean BBQ for takeout or delivery. No room inside for dining, but you can eat at a table on the patio shared with the other shops. Highly recommend the kalbi.
We did catering for 16 people. Catering was reasonably priced and ready for pickup at the agreed time with no issues. I tried to order online but they were having technical difficulties at the time so I had to go in person for the order. It's probably best to just go in person anyway because catering required special inputs on their system and it was helpful to talk about the serving sizes.
Excellent Korean food in the Lake Forest area (finally!!). Friendly and helpful service, and the food is great. So far I have had the bbq chick and meat jun and it was lush. I appreciate the large variety of banchan you can select from (plus the requisite Hawaiian mac salad). I have to personally recommend the cabbage kimchi, cucumber kimchi and the broccoli. So good! I will definitely be coming here again to eat my way through the menu while supporting a great local business. Try them!!
Excellent BBQ Short ribs and mild kimchi which is my favorite. The owner is very friendly and clean with this one of many stores and some Korean and Hawaiian influences. Quick pick up and affordable! I will be back many more times!!!
Their Mac salad is the bomb! I'm picky about mac salad, but theirs is great. I also love their kal Be ribs, they're delicious. I really like their corn as well My wife really liked their Chicken katsu, which she's also picky about. I've also tried the bul go go and spicy pork, both were great, but I personally prefer kalbi so that's my go-to. I really hope they stick around for a long time!
So happy to have delicious Korean food in Lake Forest! Everything I've tried so far has been great. I love the chicken katsu and all the sides are so yummy. I can't wait to visit in person after covid!
My favorite local spot! The kimchi is delicious and the meat always taste so tender.
Such sweet people running this place, and such powerfully delicious food! I could eat here every day, really. So far, every single thing I've tried on their menu has been worth getting again.
i like this place a lot the katsu is really good
My office is nearby so I eat here regularly. The staff is extremely kind and quick. Food is delicious, never any issues with orders, 10/10!
Authentic af. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The galbi flavor was on point, the rice was throughly washed and the sides were great. Friendly aloha atmosphere, will be coming back.
Awesome portions! My new lunch time favorite is the BBQ chicken! The sides are awesome but I personally love the Kimchi and Mac Salad.
Delicious food. Big portions. Fast service. Now I don't have to go to Garden Grove to get Korean food. Irvine is too expensive.
Our take out spot after the water park or whenever we want something quick while in the area.
Good food and portion size!
FINALLY! A Korean BBQ restaurant that is SOUTH of Irvine! Their food is basic... but really good. The side dishes are all good, which is a true testiment of a good Korean restaurant.
Excellent food. Freshly cooked meat when you order. Delicious side dishes to pick. Best service ever! I will go back most definitely!
Ordered the regular kalbi plate on Postmates and really loved it! Serving size was very generous and the kalbi was grilled to perfection. Delivered very quickly as well!
Excellent food and service. There is outdoor space shared with other restaurants to eat, but we really find it best to take the food home.
I get the mini spicy chicken with the side of kimchi and glass noodle and it hits the spot every time. Love it!
Best Korean BBQ in Orange County
Clyde is great from a customer service standpoint. Good food and the rewards program is legit.
Highly recommend Korean, one of the best I’ve had. We ate outside in the beautiful weather.
2nd time here and I love this place! Generous portions and really delicious. Excited this is near my house.
The food was delicious and the service was fantastic! Korean style seaweed was nice and the KalBi slapped
If you factor royalty coupons, we spend around $40+ for a family of 4, but we usually skip one meal during the day. Skip either breakfast or dinner. They do serve a large portion. Great deal. Would you seriously pay $40 at MacDonalds for a family of 4 when it is not enough to feed you two meals?
First and foremost the food is absolutely delicious! Surprisingly large combos, my wife and I split the regular size combo and it's plenty of food (and I am by no means a lightweight). Our favorites mains are the katsu or the galbi with a side of the spicy pickles and cabbage salad. Would recommend!
Staff is always VERY friendly - huge fan of that! There’s 2 small tables you can sit inside to eat but otherwise I love taking the food to go.
Great plate lunch style food. Imagine the deliciousness of Kbbq with the ease of takeout. The food is cooked fresh so my kalbi ribs were tender and not dried out, so ono. Nice bonchon sides too like kimchi, sprouts and cucumber. Stoked that this place isn't far from me. Definitely coming back to try the spicy pork and more. Heads up, I tried stopping by the day before around 3, but they close for a short window between lunch and dinner, 2 to 5, so maybe that can be updated on the google listing.
Amazing! I come here multiple times a week and have never had an issue. They specifically use gluten free soy sauce (tamari) for any marinades and it is all DELICIOUS. Everyone is super nice, the food comes out great AND they have a rewards program to top it off. Highly highly recommend for anyone looking for great food for a great price.
The service is amazing! The employees were very patient and answered all of our questions about gluten free options, which they have a ton of gf to choose from. The bulgogi was perfectly cooked and well done but not dry at all, I loved it!!!!! The brown rice and spicy Cucumber was a perfect pairing with the bulgogi. I never take the time to leave reviews, but I liked this place so much that I had to leave a review for other gf peeps!
Huge delicious portions! Staff was super friendly and lovely too. ^_^
This is our go-to spot for Korean BBQ! There's plenty of parking out front, food is so delicious, and we are always greeted with a smile and treated with kindness every time we go. My favorite item is the bibimbap bowl. The banchan/side dishes are always fresh (plenty of options for vegetarians) and you can tell they use quality produce and meats for everything. There are a couple small tables to eat inside or there are some tables outside in the shared patio area. I can't wait to go back!!! 😋
Food normally is always phenomenal! The meat jun is the best. I come here very often. The staff is always very friendly. Highly recommend
As a Korean I can say food - meat and sides, are on point! Service is always friendly. The young dude who takes our orders is always friendly. Appreciate the whole experience!
This place is amazing!! A new hidden gem in the area for asian food. We love the Meat Jun and all the other meats. Chapchae noodles are superb as well as all the sides. Our new go to for a quick and delicious take home meal. Check them out and you will be hooked!! Very friendly staff as well 😀
So delicious! Fresh and tasty! All the staff are friendly and helpful! Love the food here and so will you!
Delicious food, great customer service. The combo with 4 sides, 2 proteins and rice are good for 2 people. I am a regular. It is great everytime!
Authentic Korean food. The Jae yuk was so good with some very well crafted sides. I'm not often impressed, as a former expat, but it really brought me back to SK.
Food is so good here! Good quality, hope it never changes. Great attention to detail.
I originally thought this place was like a cook your own meat kbbq and was sad when I saw it wasn’t but after ordering and eating there any doubts I had went away! Extremely delicious food great prices and even better portions! The staff were all super kind you can tell they care about the quality of their food! 10/10 will be going there again
Friendly staff, very tasty food, and large portions
Umma‘s kitchen is a fabulous addition to our community! The service is always fantastic. Everyone is so nice. The food is awesome. We are so glad you moved into this space.
Visiting this area and glad to have found this little gem. I always look for a Korean restaurants In the area that I visit and this little restaurant did not disappoint. Ordered kalbi plate and spicy pork plate. Good portions and most all authentically tasty! By the way, Um-ma means mom in Korean.
I wish I could leave them six stars, food is delicious. Staff is super friendly. I highly recommend.
We love this place to get a quick fix of Korean food. The staff are always super friendly, the order always tastes great and comes out accurately. Not much of an internal atmosphere as there's only one small table inside but they do have tables outside. Highly recommend fish jun. I love the sides Korean broccoli chapchae noodles, spicy cucumbers , seaweed salad.
A local buzzing counter order Korean bbq restaurant. Umma’s offers a number of different meat dishes served over rice with a choice of home made banchan (side dishes). They are so proud of all of their items that they couldn’t even single one out to recommend, rather that any that I choose I would like. Their dishes come in two sizes, “mini” and “regular”, although I think it would be more appropriate to call them “regular” and “large”, as the mini portion was already a full meal. I ended up ordering the bulgogi (BBQ beef) plate, and it was delicious. The meat is well seasoned and well flavored and goes great with the rice. It is not overly sweet or salty, and you do get a generous serving. The meat is cooked to order, so it comes out steaming hot fresh to eat, at the cost of a small wait time to cook. They have a number of side dishes, which they are also very proud of. Macaroni salad, bean sprouts, kimchi, seasoned tofu, chap chae (glass noodles), spicy cucumber, etc. The restaurant also offers family packs with larger servings to go, and catering options.
Really enjoyed our meal here. Quick serve counter service place. You build your own plate with a protein choice and side dishes. Meat quality was good given the cost. Kalbi is an up charge but was pretty tasty. Seating is outdoor patio style shared w another restaurant. Recommend trying this place if you are visiting Irvine.
Lovely place with great options. You choose the type of plate (choice of meat + rice) you want and you get 2-4 sides depending on the size. The bulgogi is thinly sliced almost reminds me of brisket, but definitely has the bulgogi marinade. The bbq chicken is nice and tender with a good marinade as well. The macaroni salad and chap chae are my fave sides!
Simply the best Meat Jun around. Being from Hawaii this is a great alternative and really reminds me of being back home. Flavorful, always fresh. Get the Meat Jun or the Fish Jun. The spicy cucumber is the best side.
We love Umma’s for feeding larger groups. So easy and something for everyone! They also have food that they don’t have everywhere. We love their meat Jun and fish Jun!
Ummas is great! We love coming here once every 2 months or so. The atmosphere got 3 stars because there’s really nowhere to sit. They have a high top but there’s no ambiance. People there are always friendly and food is delicious:) I always order the Kalbi. The macaroni salad and Japjae are yummy. We also like the spicy cucumber:)
Love this place! I am gluten free and always looking for new places to try. So happy I found this place super close to my work. Lots of GF options and it actually tastes good too! Owners are very friendly too. Not much room to sit inside but plenty of shared tables outside.
Me encanta su comida. Excelentes sabores.
Took order to-go with call ahead, which worked well. Had the Kalbi Short Rib over brown rice with sides of Chapchae Glass Noodles and Korean broccoli. Paired with MJ Sauce (sweet/spicy) and Teriyaki (sweet) sauce which I mixed for a flavorful combination. The short rib dinner seemed a little light for a $20 meal. Perhaps an appetizer would have been a good option. The restaurant is set up for pickup or eat in the courtyard outside. The parking lot is busy which allows for spaces to open up as customers come and go.
Umma’s K-BBQ is a fast casual Korean and Hawaiian influenced restaurant located at the corner of Trabuco Road and Bake Parkway in Lake Forest. The plaza is anchored by a McDonalds and Starbucks and there is plenty of parking available except during peak hours. Their menu is fairly extensive and even though you can dine in the outdoor courtyard, takeout is the way to go. With a combination plate, you can enjoy 2 proteins with choice of base and 4 side orders. I opted for the kalbi and spicy chicken and they did not disappoint. I also tried the spicy pork but it was unfortunately on the dryer side. White rice was my base and I chose cabbage salad, spicy cucumber and a double order of chapjae glass noodles as my side dishes. I also sampled my wife’s kimchi and mac salad which were just as tasty as the other sides. The best parts of our experience were the generous portion sizes and the exceptional service provided by the young man behind the counter. We’ll def be back!
I’m a big fan of meat jun and it can be a little hard to find it around SoCal since it’s a kind of localized Hawaiian-Korean food. This place does it well and the plates remind me of plate lunches in Hawaii. I just wish there was a bit larger portion of meat jun on the combo plate!
I enjoyed the meat jun and kalbi ribs here a lot. Both proteins are delicious and flavorful. I would also recommend getting japchae and fish cake as your side dishes. I will be back next time to try other dishes when I'm in the area.
Excellent food, fast service, it feels very cramped, however. Love the Bulgogi, the Japchae and Kimchi were very good.
The bbq was really good. The only thing was there's not much seating inside. Very convenient if your just picking up your food to go
Solid quick KBBQ. Got the kalbi plate. Fairly expensive at about 28 bucks. Flavor was on point. Meat was on the cheaper side and somewhat chewy. Would try other dishes because the flavor was hittin. Korean broccoli banchan was fire.
Chicken Katsu: super good. Thin, crispy, and big portion Rice: stale and super dry Seaweed Salad: tough to chew through and was not marinated enough. Very subtle flavor. Kimchi Cucumbers: refreshing, however subtle flavor Bean sprouts: my favorite side. Crunchy, cold, and packed with flavor Macaroni Salad: they skimped out on the mayo for sure. Was watery. Overall: the chicken katsu and the bean sprouts really saved this experience. I wish they had more sauces.
The food here is incredible! Always fresh and hot and super tasty. The people behind the counter are incredibly friendly and they get the food at fast. For how much food you get, the price is also reasonable. Cannot recommend this place enough!
Buena comida,buen servicio.
Food was good and looked very appetizing and honestly would come back for convenient meals. I got a mini plate and it was packed so full and it was good food BUT the kimchi was so insanely bland I was shocked. It was as if a real Korean didn’t even make the kimchi. Even gutjeori which is fresh unfermented kimchi is never THIS BLAND…. I was genuinely shocked how unseasoned it was. It was red kimchi that tasted like nothing sadly but everything else was good, just disappointed about the kimchi. The cabbage was good but also too sweet
White rice: too sweet. Portion of food: more than enough. Price: slightly high. Overall: not quite delicious to the Korean’s taste, at least to me.
I spent $30 on a BBQ rib meal that was more bone than meat and tasted like char and oil. The noodles tasted like char, the macaroni was pure mayo, and I can't even force myself to finish the plate. I highly regret spending my money here.
Worst service ever, i went in there and there were no other customers, there were 3 employees working and they straight up ignored me, not even a nod, i get ppl can be busy and that's perfectly fine, but not even an eye contact or saying anything at all, i guess they think i stood in front of the cash register for fun for 5 minutes? The lady literally refused to look up
