Sekisui Midtown Memphis Reviews
My boyfriend and I were told that Sekisui in Midtown was the most authentic Japanese restaurant here in Memphis. When we visited and I had to use the bathroom and immediately saw a bidet toilet, I knew that we were told the truth. Besides the Japanese styled bathroom, the food immediately reminded me of Japan. Especially the menu and the way of ordering. We first started with the wasabi shumai and the yakitori, something I don’t typically see at Japanese restaurants. The shumai was amazing. I was glad that the wasabi was actually infused into the shumai and not within it, because when you take a bite you immediately feel the spice up your nose. The yakitori was also incredible, though a little too much sauce for my liking. The real winners were the sushi and entrée. We ordered salmon, mackerel and white tuna. The mackerel was definitely my favorite, I just love how salty the fish is. I ordered the yakiniku while my boyfriend ordered the kushiyaki steak. I am definitely biased, but I loved the yakiniku steak. It was incredibly flavorful, with the soy sauce marinated into the steak and vegetables underneath. With a side of white rice, it balanced it all out. My boyfriend’s kushiyaki steak was a little tough to eat, at least in my opinion, but he really enjoyed it. We also loved the selection of Japanese beets here as well. Will definitely come back when I am craving Japanese food again!
A true midtown Memphis staple. In addition to the relaxing, family-friendly atmosphere, Jon and Sean always deliver amazing service, and the menu is expansive and excellent! So many sushi rolls to choose from. On this particular visit, I ate 1/3 of my body weight in vegetable tempura and followed it up with an incredible vegetarian roll, and washed down with Junmai Gingo sake. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great Japanese restaurant!
This place was amazing. The price is well worth the quality of food. Definitely will be coming here again! I only wish I could give more than 5 stars on everything!
Ive eaten sushi all over the country and SekiSui midtown remains my favorite. Always a solid choice. The Jacksonville, Margot, house cucumber, and Debra roll. Nigiri regular and Uni(sea Urchin) nigiri. Miso soup and house salad. Adding more pics from another amazing meal.
Great place to eat sashimi in Memphis. And also daily special nigiris seem to be great. I'll go there again for them. In my first visit I tried Chirashi lunch special, which comes with a variety of sashimi on top of typical sour sushi rice.
Haven't been here in years, but it's still great!
Wow! Glad I finally came here. Chirashi was a huge portion with quality fish and with some good rice. Really didn’t need to get the appetizer pyramid because the chirashi was so large, but that was also very good; I ate both with no regrets. Dessert was also delicious and they have good vanilla and green tea ice cream to go with the fried banana. Excited to go back after a 100 mile bike ride and eat nonstop. Very nice waitress and staff, A++. 5 stars for local sushi joint with very good sushi, quality fish, nice people, chill vibe, comforting interior. Not a trendy upscale place if that is what you’re in the mood for. I don’t know if that even exists in Memphis (?)
Hands down the best Japanese restaurant in Memphis! The staff, the food, the ambience is nothing short of absolutely excellent! This my personal go-to place for sushi whenever I come into town! Love this place!
This is my sushi joint absolute top of the list no matter where I've eaten sushi. All of my FAVORITES are right here, including Lee, the regional manager for the Sekisui restaurants and Robata Ramen (also great stuff!). Lee is just the sweetest bubble of lovely energy that makes amazing sushi (Cory is The Man! but the rest of the sushi chefs are on point too) just that much better.
OMG!! There's delicious food here!! They have a long menu for you to choose your food. We drove by Memphis and stop here for our dinner, it was a good idea for us.
Always fresh food and the best service! Brianna is always friendly and gives the best suggestions when ordering!
I been going here 15 years. They don’t miss. Every time I go I get the SP ROLL & extra ginger dressing to dip 🥺 best sushi in memphis people.
Sekisui has the best chirashi in Memphis! No other place comes close (and if you're wondering, Red Koi easily has the worst).
Great food and Plum Sake! Fried cheesecake is a must have
Delicious sushi, great atmosphere, love coming here!
I fell in love with this joint on a trip to Memphis 4 years ago and try to come every time in in Memphis! 🖤🖤🖤
my man Jason’s favorite place
Delicious and fresh sushi! We came in shortly after they reopened for dinner and were seated right away. (Was not very busy, this was a Wednesday evening.) Parking was pretty bad, as the parking lot is tiny, but don’t let that deter you. The menu is quite large, so everyone is sure to find something. My husband and I had a total of 4 rolls and we loved them all (also got the ginger house salad and some gyoza). This is our first time to Memphis and since this was off the Beale Street/Main Street “strip” we didn’t know if it was worth checking out. We looked at the reviews, hoping we were choosing a good place and we were not disappointed. A little pricey, but sushi usually is.
My friends and I sat at the sushi bar to eat and drink. It was the greatest experience to see the sushi being created right in front of us!! Not to mention that every thing was absolutely delicious down to the edamame!!! I hate I didn't take any pictures bc the presentation was beautiful!! The ambiance was nice and the service was great!!! Looking forward to going back soon!!
The food here is great. I come here often and almost always get a negiri sampler. It's always prepared well with fresh fish, I would definitely suggest it. My fiance always gets a couple rolls and says they are great! It can take a while to order or get your food if its busy here, but it does not take away from the restuarant for me.
One of my favorite places to grab sushi and meet up with friends. Service is always friendly and fast. Food has never disappointed me. I prefer to sit at the sushi bar and people watch - - always makes for an entertaining evening, even if dining alone.
Dinner was great and the service was excellent! Sean was our server and he was great. Will definitely eat here again!
I’m not sure how to put it into words, but this is the only seikisui in Memphis as I’m concerned. The food, clearly, the best, the staff, there is no comparison to the other locations. Laid back, not a long wait and great bar and sushi chefs. The possibilities are endless!
The Sekisui Roll and the Stacy's Roll were really good! Would absolutely eat here again.
Clean and very intimate. Not a lot of parking .
Went for dinner this past Friday night with my sister. Sat outside and Paige was our server. EXCELLENT service and all the food was delicious. My favorites are the Debra Roll, tempura sweet potatoes, and Philly roll.
The web post 4:30 but it is a 5pm open, 1 bike rack, 10 parking and 1 handicap spot & entrance. You can call ahead for seating or take out & they do have 2 bars for seating singles or couples. there are several out- door pick nick style tables and I saw crayons for the kids. Everything was reasonable and my food was good but I did not eat the sushi. Best part was the staff who were helpful and knowledgeable and of course the Saki!
THIS is MY sushi joint. I eat it there or I get it to-go. I feel like I'm at home with, family when I stop by. I love the water features around the restaurant. The patio is pretty at night. I go here for all occasions: To catch up with pals, for a date night, for a lunch meeting or just to grab a meal on-the-go. To-go orders usually take 20 minutes because everything is made to order. I love the Crab Deluxe Salad! The ginger salad dressing is SO good! I wish I had the recipe. It's not watery. You can actually taste tiny bits of ginger in it. My other fave is the Red Birds Sushi roll. It has crunch crab, sweet chili sauce, and sushi shrimp on top. If you decide to check it out, you will likely see me there. LOL!
Pretty good sushi, pretty expensive , but lots of options. Service wasn't the best. Music was extremely annoying the whole time we wanted to leave because the music makes you agitated. Insulting hip hop/gangster music doesn't give any restaurant a nice atmosphere.
I ordered a chicken teriyaki as well as a sushi dinner. Based on my experience, the food was mediocre at best. I do not recommend the chicken as it is very stiff compared to regular chicken. However, the sushi was decent and worth trying.
I started with the miso soup. It had a generous amount of seaweed that tasted so much better than the dried ones you typically come across. For the entrée, the Chirashi was very good. Fresh fish selections, pickled cucumber was a nice touch, and sushi rice was mixed so well I could have eaten another bowl. The ikura was briny and octopus had a nice snap, not rubbery. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much when I walked in. When I left, I was impressed. Very nice.
Food was good but rather expensive per se, nice atmosphere specifically at this sekisui compared to the other ones I've gone to. The time I went was very heavily trafficked and had a lot of people which indicates the food is nice. Service was a bit slow because of it but if we weren't on a time crunch it would have been fine.
Very nice place to take your significant other, I enjoyed the food and the ambiance.
Goto sushi bar in Memphis. Food is good, I like the choice of rolls. Service was average and could have been more attentive. Place seems a bit run down and could be made to smell better. Prices are average.
Service was fast, portion size was on the smaller side but the food was good. The inside was cute and romantic with a faux waterfall in the entryway. Overall a good spot for a date night or a meal on an outdoor patio. Prices were in line with Sushi prices. I was concerned due to mixed reviews on Yelp but they were very busy the night we went and service didn't suffer.
Underwhelming It's good that we ordered non-shushi items because the shushi had no personality, no pops of flavor, and it didn't match the description of what was ordered. The appetizer was forgotten, and the bathroom is gross. Best part is that they have a signed guitar from Elvis Presley hanging over the hostess stand.
Went in with my family for my daughter birthday. Server did not tell us her name, asked for our drinks and I put in an order for an appetizer and my daughters meal. Another family arrived, and must have been related to our server, because after they arrived she paid no attention to us (my daughter spilled her soup and we waited 10 mins for her to come check on us. She never asked if we wanted refills, napkins) The other family got their food before us even though we ordered and arrived before they did. When we finally did get our food, I didnt have chopsticks so I sat there waiting until she eventually came over and i asked for chopsticks. This restaurant is spectacular, but the service we received was absolutely terrible. To top it off, when we were in the parking lot leaving, she came out and said goodbye to the family she catered to. I didnt even mention that it was my daughter's birthday because we were there for so long and she was so inattentive.
Brought my wife here for a dinner date. The sake was good, the edamame was good. I had the shogun and she had the daimyo. My lobster was cold and rubbery, the beef was too well done, hard to chew and drowning in sauce. The plain, white rice was probably one of the more enjoyable items. The sushi smelled slightly rancid and most of the fried vegetables weren't cooked all the way through and still has uncooked batter in the middle. Wife said her beef was also overcooked, but seemed pleased with the rest of her meal. Also, they don't seem to have any soy sauce that isn't low sodium. The wait staff was attentive and friendly.
Waited well over an hour just for a few rolls. Would have just gone up and left if not for hanging out with a few friends. If you expect decent sushi within a few hours I wouldn't come here at any busy time even if they're not that busy at the time. Waitress didn't even stop by and check with us for over a half hour.
I've been many sushi places, and this one is below the average. From 1 to 10, the food is at 4. I didn't see any freshness in sushi. The rice was dry. It didn't taste like the moistur of vinegar. It tasted like something had been for 2 or 3 days. The service was fine. They handed the food and we ate just like other restaurants. The atmosphere was just ok. We sat at the bar where they make sushi. One thing caught my attention was thier toast oven. It's very dirty. The chefs only used only one tower to clean everything from his knifes to the sushi. The cleanliness of a kitchen is the bottom line of a good restaurant. If you can't reach the bottom, you can't deliver a good service and either the qualities of the food. Better focus on the the kitchen's cleanliness and the freshness of the food.
I’ve lived in Midtown for 4 years and just now decided to give this place a try. The sushi was fine and the rest wasn’t great. The steak teriyaki I ordered wasn’t sliced up. I have been in the meat and poultry industry for years and this steak was very bottom tier steak. I fed half of it to my dog it was all fat and too tough to eat. Fried rice should also be offered. Pretty disappointed. Sushi was great though. That’s it
The health department is involved, but the kitchen in this place is disgusting. One of their own employees finally alerted the health department and they were fired and threatened by owners. The image below is 100% real and one of many disgusting peeks into the disgusting conditions hidden from customers.
Arrived 40 mins before closing to just have a dessert. Called the store beforehand to make sure it was okay to arrive and arrived 15 mins before the time the phone person told me to and I got to the door and they told me they are closed and wouldn’t let me in. Would preferred not to make the drive if they were honest over the phone.
COLD FOOD AND BAD SERVICE I took my wife here for dinner and our experience was not good. The server brought us our silverware unwrapped, touching it with her bare hands and sat it on the table. Why wasn't she wearing gloves? Why wasn't the silverware wrapped in napkins? Speaking of napkins, she never gave us any! After she dropped off our soups and salad she didn't give us any napkins, I had to find them myself. We ordered the pork dumplings for an appetizer and it was bland and not homemade, more like frozen food seared in a pan. When our entree's arrived our food was cold, the tempura was very greasy and had an odd taste. Why are they serving cold food? We also ordered one of their specialty drinks called Sekisui Punch and that's what it tasted like, fruit punch from the grocery store. Overall the experience here was disappointing and that's sad because I've heard so many good things about this place.
One of my favorite places. It's very busy so it can be a little slow sometimes but the food is worth it. Love it. Update 2018: third strike. They're out. Third time waiting over an hour for sushi. Third time being ignored for refills. Third time not receiving napkins/ chop sticks. Third time fighting off FRUIT FLIES! I've been a loyal customer for 10 years and tonight I was berated by a server because all the tables around me were upset. Sekisui, it was a good run, but we're Donne with you. Good luck.
I am currently here and I ordered shrimp tempura. Omg! The veggies and shrimp were so greasy! I wasn't able to taste any flavor only grease in my mouth. I ordered crunchy crab roll, I recieved my food first and still waiting over 20 minutes for my sushi. I won’t be back...I got to get the grease out of my mouth...
We ordered then they brought out our 1st dish and my friends and mine were both burnt! We asked them to take it back and bring us another. Waitress came back and said they didn't have any more of that dish. She said she couldn't order anything else from the kitchen because they were renovating it. What??? We finally got the couple of other things we ordered but they really didn't act like they cared at all about us or our food. Last time we'll go there!
Not very impressed by this place. The menu has plenty of options, but everything we ordered was mediocre at best. The seaweed they wrapped their sushi in was like chewing on leather and the rolls are very small. One of our rolls only had everything it was supposed to have in it on half the roll. We asked for a bowl of just plain noodles for our toddler and they said that they couldn’t do that so we ended up paying for chicken and noodles the kid wouldn’t touch. Service was unimpressive and very slow. This is not anywhere we will come back to.
Visited this establishment, and I stood there 10 minutes, waiting for someone to greet me. We sat at the bar, and still no one greeted us. Finally, after 20 minutes, we asked for some menus. Next thing we know, there are 10 other people just standing in the middle of the restaurant waiting to be greeted. This young lady then walked to the kitchen and came back and yelled they were only serving sushi and the kitchen was closed. Customer service was very lackluster, but the building looked nice.
Asked for no rice in our sushi, which my wife and I do everywhere, and it was not good at all. They wrapped all rolls in cucumber, I think because they did not know how to wrap them with seaweed when no rice is present. This made the food rather tasteless. Also, they said that it would take an hour to prepare with this special request and ended up making us wait an additional 20 minutes after reaching the restaurant. All other sushi restaurants have been able to make delicious sushi within a reasonable amount of time even with our apparently complicated orders. We have not had such bad sushi/service in quite a while and will not be returning to this place.
