Kubic Mercadillo Reviews
The food and coffee were phenomenal and the service was even better! We felt like we were guests in James' home. Order as much as you can, and make sure you try the bread. Best bread I've had outside of Spain.
Had their brunch today and felt transported to Spain. I mean having a James Beard semi finalist cook for you is bomb but their bocadillos and lattes are out of this world. Can’t miss their famous Almond Pie or their eggplant croquettes. It was all too delicious for words and great vibe and service too! @chicagopescetarian
WOW… this felt like a home cooked meal, we were so blown away by how warm and welcoming chef james & his team was. It was incredibly intimate as we broke bread with the other guests at the same table. The Paella… I have never tasted anything better than this. Do yourself a favor and book the family tasting menu on Friday/Saturday night. 10/10
Bocadillo Market continues to WOW! and punch far above its weight with its new location at 1117 W Grand. We enjoyed the family style dinner in the company of many talented Michelin Star and award winning chefs at our last visit. The bonus was that the whole meal was gluten-free. So ask if it's something you need. We BYOB'ed it and the other guests brought some amazing wines that knocked our socks off. We loved the paella and the salad. The group was lively, friendly and fun. Highly recommended!
Came in this morning and it completely turned my day around. Had the most delicious mint basil latte and eggplant empanada, and got to chat with the chef and owner, James. He’s passionate about creating community and so clearly takes pride in providing a meal made with the best ingredients at fair prices. Make sure to stop in and make a point to make conversation!
This place legit has the best sandwiches in Chicago. I have been 3 times now (twice for lunch and once for the family style dinner) and each time I’ve been blown away. The calamari sandwich is the definition of heaven in your mouth. The patatas bravad might be the best I’ve ever had and that includes the ones I’ve had in Spain. Lastly the owner James is the nicest and most down to earth guy.
Great space and delicious food. The chef is personable and welcoming, and the staff are friendly. They occasionally host family style dining events and they’re a great experience. Please be sure to visit them for lunch or dinner you won’t be disappointed.
We had an amazing eight-course, family-style dinner at Bocadillo Market. The evening started with a cheese course that was a fantastic blend of Spanish flavors and set the tone for the meal. The seafood in the crudo and paella was incredibly fresh and perfectly seasoned. The patatas bravas were on point, with just the right crisp exterior and soft, fluffy interior. Dessert was a standout as well, the chocolate cake was rich without being overly sweet, beautifully balanced by the berry and pumpkin. Beyond the food, we loved the family-style dining experience, it created a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and we even made some new friends along the way. An unforgettable meal all around. Kudos to Chef James and his crew. We’ll definitely be back very soon.
Bocadillo Market is a truly special experience from the authentic Spanish food to the incredible service and atmosphere! The family style dinners provide a unique opportunity to share a beautiful meal and conversation with others while being immersed in Spanish culture. This restaurant has become one of my family’s favorite spots in the city. Come check them out!!
The Friday dinner was an incredible experience. Not only do you get to enjoy the delicious food and warm hospitality, you get to share a table with strangers who end up feeling like friends by the end of the night. Truly an experience. I barely got any photos of the delicious plating but can’t wait to go again!
We absolutely love this restaurant so much! Every dish, dessert, and coffee (basil and mint latte is my new favorite) is so delicious. But even better than the delicious top tier food is the welcoming atmosphere. James the owner and chef is so friendly and accommodating. We love to chat with him as a family. Such a beautiful addition to the neighborhood.
I’ve heard great things about this place and the food was without a doubt a banger! We ordered two sandwiches, one the lamb and the other the calamari, and had their almond pie and coffee for dessert. The food was super delicious and we’d like to come back for their dinner menu. The owner was super passionat. At first I was a bit confused if the kitchen was open for the hot meals but the owner told me they’re always ready for serving delicious food once they open. Highly recommend this place.
Food was great and delicious. GOAT sandwich nice and juicy, with right amt of spice. Only complaint is the lack of servers - when we visited it was a lean team of two and having any more than two tables would’ve stretched them. At one point it was just us and a guy came in for pickup who ended up waiting a long time since both chefs were in the back and they had nobody manning the front.
Wow. I’m not one to even give reviews but this place is a grand slam! The service is fast, friendly, informative and kind. Then the food hits and it’s amazing. Every. Single. Thing. is out of this world great. Not to be left behind, their drinks are stellar too! We had a saffron & pumpkin and mint & basil lattes. Do yourself a favor and get over here! Albie
I think the smoked lamb bocadillo is my new favorite sandwich in the city and more people need to be talking about this place. The smoked lamb is tender, rich and saucy, and the sandwich has a perfect mix of herby (cilantro), acid (pickled green beans), and crunch (carrots). The sauce soaks into the bread but it still retains a really nice crunch. It’s absolutely worth the price, especially considering it came with patatas bravas (which itself was the best version of the dish I’ve ever had). I also had a slice of their pumpkin almond cake, which was also excellent Chef James was working the counter, and he introduced himself to everyone who walked in and was eager to strike up a conversation. He couldn’t have been nicer, and is definitely part of the reason I’ll be back real soon- hopefully for one of their upcoming dinners
We loved it here. For starters the owner couldn’t be nicer. He puts in the effort to make your experience a pleasant one. The food was great. I don’t think you can go wrong with any item on the menu. Corn Lavender latte was great, and my boyfriend enjoyed his latte too. We highly recommend it here!!
The ambiance and decor gave me life. Its details and esthetics are carefully crafted. But the food…the food. I had the Spanish tortilla sandwich. The It looks so simple but in the bite complex flavors and melt in your mouth locally sourced foods satisfy your palette. If you appreciate and are knowledgeable about good food that takes time to come to your table because it is that “dumb good” then this is your place. Be ready to wait for your food because this is a small place. Do you want the Michelin-star quality of food without the pretentious environment or prices. This is it my friend. Come by for the food, coffee or Spanish-selected wine but stay for the culture. My compliments to the chef and owner!
Came here for dinner and the flavors just exploded in my mouth! Everything was rich and delicious. We got some eggplant croquettes that were creamy on the inside and wonderfully crunchy and chewy on the outside, a tempura squash on toast dish that had great texture and pops of sweetness from some honey I think, a pulled lamb entree that was rich and savory, and finished off with the almond pie that I would highly recommend. So leave room for dessert! Prices are on the higher side, nice for a special occasion. I did find the service to be a bit scattered and unrefined for the type of atmosphere and price point, but nothing terrible. A little more on the reactive side vs. proactive service. The interior mid-century style is quite nice and there are some really great furnishings inside.
