Asian Pearl Millbrae Reviews
Best traditional dim sum in the bay area. I especially like the siu mai and char siu bao. My wife is crazy for the rice porridge. Years have passed. Ownership has changed several times. Asian Pearl has been down for several years. A couple of people told us that it has improved with a new chef, so we gave it a try. Overall I'd give the New Asian Pearl a C-. It's not a new, skilled chef. It's the same mediocre, uninspired old one. We started with baked char siu bao. They looked yummy! The bun was actually very good but the char siu in the filling was very poor quality. Not gone bad but old and flavorless. The only flavor in the filling tasted like it came directly from a jar. The siu mai tasted like it had been in a freezer for long, flavorless and clearly not fresh. We had a Singapore style fried noodle. Any decent Cantonese restaurant will kill this dish. The New Asian Pearl killed it but not in a good way. No wok hei. Zero. The pork was the same tired, old, tasteless pork used in the char siu bao. I have to be honest here and say that the shrimp was actually tasty. My wife shares that the curry flavor was off, as if it was from an expired lot of curry powder. The beef balls were actually quite good, fresh and tasty. The shrimp cham fun we didn't have, but it looked very good. The pan cooked turnip cake looked decent. The tea water could have been hotter. The tea itself was weak and probably the cheapest stuff the restaurant could buy. The service was acceptable ok. Cost. The noodle was more expensive than at Koi Palace and the dim sum was almost as expensive. Will we go back? No, but, I think if you know what to order, you could get a fairly decent dim sum lunch at an acceptable okay price but bring your own tea.
Was visiting in town and dropped by this place. Was graciously greeted by the owner at the table, asking if we were visiting and was given a table promptly. Appreciated the warm welcome! The service was great as our waitress not only took our order promptly, but also took time to share nearby recommendations for places to eat. Love the friendly service! We came in a group of 5 so we ordered a variety of plates to share. I ordered the Beef Chow Fun and Deep Fried Tiger Prawn with Salted Egg. Both dishes were yummy. I love that the beef chow fun actually had flavor and was seasoned properly, which a lot of places often don't execute well! Additionally, my friends ordered the Sweet and Sour pork, Braised Lamb in clay pot, Peking Spare Ribs, Beef Short Ribs with Papaya in Clay Pot, Gai Lan (Chinese Broccoli), BBQ Roast Pork, and Stir-Fry Ribeye Steak with Mushroom. I am so glad we are Asian and enjoy family style sharing! We ordered a few bowls of rice, which if you are Asian, RICE IS LIFE. The rice here is soft and fluffy, which is the only way you should eat rice! I love the Beef Short Ribs in Papaya in Clay Pot, and was honestly surprised by the creativity the dishes have. Usually some of the ingredients that was present in the dishes were not traditionally placed together, so it was a pleasant surprise that the place came up with the creations. They definitely executed well! All the meat dishes were great, and it was hard to pick one that was best. Even though we only ordered one vegetable dish, it was awesome. It tastes a bit different from how Chinese Broccoli is normally cooked, with is just with garlic and oil. I taste a bit of Chinese wine in it, very interesting and a great addition! Not sure why the ratings were so low at this place, as the service and food was great. Will be recommending this place to others to visit!
The truffle Peking duck & squabs are to die for. Chrispy outside & juicy inside. Everything is tasty
We recently had a xmas gathering with friends. The staff and manager were really nice, especially the manager is super awesome! We love the food and everything work out well! Thank you and we will look forward to celebrate more parties in the future!
Coming from LA, it was difficult to find a dim sum/Cantonese seafood restaurant and I finally found the perfect restaurant. I love this restaurant. It never fails to deliver in taste and quality. Best of all, they have great service and it’s super clean! I love that I can spend anywhere from $20 - $100 per person and always feel super happy and full! The fresh live seafood is the best and when the razor clams are in season, I’m here almost everyday! I highly recommend this place for casual dim sum or family dinner! They’re also super service dog friendly.
Great place for meeting up with a group. Public parking in the back that was a bit hard to find. Food came out quickly. Cheung fun could have been a little bit thinner.
Can't wait to dim sum and dine in person here again! The food here is always so good. I come here for both dim sum and dinner often, and both are great. It's a spacious and comfortable interior with lots of natural light streaming through, perfect for large family gatherings or more intimate lunch with friends. :D
If you're looking for a tasty Chinese restaurant, you've found it! The dishes cooked are classic Chinese, but not drenched in oil. There's a wide variety to choose from - includes crispy noodles with beef, Cantonese style lobster, mala fish, Peking duck, and braised lamb in clay pot. My favorite was the crispy noodles because it had the right texture and flavors.

I haven't eat here for quite a while. The dimsum is good compared to alot of other nearby Chinese restaurants. It's not busy at all so food come out super fast. Service is great. Waitress keep checking on us every 15 min. Overall I'm happy with the visit and recommend eating here.
This is one of the BEST Dim Sum places in the whole bay area. I have tried many other places like The Kitchen, HL peninsula, Koi Palace, Saigon Seafood Harbor etc. This restaurant remains on top for both its food's taste and the price. Take shrimp dumplings as an example: good shrimp dumplings should have a slightly chewy and elastic skin, and the shrimp inside should be crisp, bouncy, and refreshing — not floury or overly sticky. (The ones made by The Kitchen have a floury texture.) The shrimp dumplings from New Asian Pearl are among the better ones in the Bay Area.
High quality food. The only problem is you probably need to wait for a long time after placing your order.
Probably one of the best dim sum places in South San Francisco! We were there just before 10:30 in the morning on a Sunday and they had a line outside the restaurant. Service was good and excellent dim sum, I highly recommend this place if you're looking for authentic and freshly made dim sum!

A lot of dishes. All the ones we tried were tasty and reasonablely priced. Don't order from their preset menu which was quite expensive and not worth it. Reservation is a good idea if you have a large party.
Ordered Veggie fried rice and they did it well. Tasted really like the restaurant from mainland China and not like American arranged at all. I personally like it very much. It is quite a big portion that it supposed to share with group normally but you can doggy bag them home later.
We got the private VIP room for our rehearsal dinner. We got the menu Set B for 16 adults. The VIP room has a giant round table and all 16 of us were able to sit around it comfortably. They also had a small table at the corner where the 3 kids sat. The food was SO GOOD! We had people from different backgrounds at the dinner, and everyone enjoyed the food. My favorite dish was probably the mushroom and steak cubes. The meat was extremely tender and well marinated. We left full and happy. Apparently they also had a karaoke machine if we felt inclined to sing. Lol. We also had the room for the whole night if we wanted to stay longer. We left after the dinner though, but it's nice that we didn't feel rushed. I highly recommend this place for a big private get together.
Coming from a non Asian customer I really like the dim sum here. I always get the shrimp dumpling, rice rolls, chicken feet and beef balls. The service is quick. There is sometimes a line at 10am but not super long unless it's a big event. Not a bad place to get food. Would come again
Were surprised by several negative ratings. We thoroughly enjoyed our dim sum meal. Food was good quality. Service was better than average. We preferred cart service instead of placing our orders ahead but not a deal breaker
About 3.5 stars. Been here twice. Pretty comfortable and clean dinning area. The food are overall well done. Definitely not disappointed, but at the same time I don't feel like anything is too special. It's a safe bet to bring guests to for Chinese food in a respectable setting.
Hasn't changed in 2 decades or more. The front staff is nice, Though it is a Chinese restaurant. They didn't have a lot of what I ordered and canceled. They gave me the wrong dishes but they tasted good. Pricey dimsum.
This is one of the best restaurant in this area. It's BBQ pork bun is the best. You can't find any better in other place. Other food are also very good, but the quality is some what inconsistent. One day, I ate the siu mai taste very salty, but it usually tastes good in other day. It has its own big parking lot behind, but it is always full if you go there in lunch hour.
The overall dining experience at this Chinese restaurant was fine; however, there was a setback when one dish was delayed, keeping us waiting for nearly fifty minutes. Despite the wait, the taste was satisfactory, and the remaining service was acceptable. It's advisable to make reservations in advance, especially during peak hours when the restaurant tends to be crowded.
The food is tasty. Service was actually a little slow, but we weren't in a rush. We just chatted and enjoyed the meal as the dishes came out one by one.
It's alright, but seems to lack a lot of noodles and rice dishes that a typical Cantonese restaurants would have. We had lobster noodles and it was good. Went there again recently and it's improved. Good dimsum, the pork knuckle has crispy and light skin and moist meat.
Trying out this dim sum place. The roastd squad is just right except for a week's over its real age. Rice noodle is prepared the right way and not loaded with sodium nor MSG. Good move. The Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce is at par, not greasy at all. The bottom line is a little pricy for a three course meal on a dim sum Sunday lunch.
The food here is either a hit or miss. The soy sauce chow mein and shui mai were our favorites.
Pretty legit dim sum restaurant. I love the fact that they still push the carts around unlike other places where it is strictly order from the menu. More authentic and more chill. They also have other items on their menu such as the salted fish and egg fried rice, was BOMB AS F! One of the best I've had. Their tea is also really fragrant and pleasant and delicious.

Service & food good if you're a regular customer. The restaurant is usually busy and quite loud. Food can be a bit heavy in MSG, all the dishes seems to have the same flavor
Had a ten course dinner which included beef, vegetables, lobster, abalone, shrimp and scallops. Including red bean soup. Overall, the food was just average. Didn't feel any one dish was outstanding. No different than a small mom and pop restaurant but with much higher prices. I heard their dim sum was excellent. I had their deep fried taro root and it was oily and lukewarm. The red bean soup wasn't red in color. More a gray color so a bit off-putting. There are better Chinese restaurants for the price. The parking lot is behind the restaurant. Service was very good and the restaurant is family friendly. The decor looks dated and the private room is very plain looking. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here unless invited to an event.
There are much better choices in the Millbrae area nowadays... Every time I come to this place I leave disappointed. The food has gotten worse and the prices have gone up.
Came here for dim sum on a Saturday and surpringly didn't have to wait too long for a table it was just past noon. This was my first time at this location, they provide you with a menu which you can mark what you want but when we tried to turn it in the server told us the items we want were on the carts so we just had to wait until they came around. I still saw most of the surrounding tables turn in their menu to different servers. Some of the carts didn't even stop at our table, maybe because we were seated in an awkward corner. We finished eating around 1pm and by that time they were out of desserts, they didn't even have egg tarts. Probably will not return.
This place used to be our go-to (would have given it 5 stars 8 years ago). Went back and the food is just not the same. The siu mai and steamed dim sum have definitely declined in taste and quality. Hope they get their chief back soon.. they're okay but there is definitely better places now.
Porridge was good. Dim sum was just OK. Shrimp rice noodles, the shrimp didn't taste too fresh. Came here again on a Sat around 11:30, surprisingly no line... They used to be very busy in weekend, but doesn't seem like it anymore. Maybe more competitions around and it seems that the quality has gone down hill.
Food is solid. We went here for dim sum on a Friday (may be not the right time?). They did not have XLB on the menu, but since we asked they got the order in. The wrapper was not as thin as we are used to having for XLB. Shumai and shrimp dumplings were good. We also liked the shrimp noodles. Pork bbq bun was solid. Good food for the price.

We were a group of 6 people from 2 families. We made a dinner reservation on Saturday and were told it would be crowded. We got there on time and fortunately were seated after 15 minutes wait. Not bad considering they had a banquet occupying 2/3 of the restaurant space. We ordered the six dishes and most of them were above the standard of the Cantonese food, especially the daily special steam soup which I would recommend to order. BBQ pork was ok. The fat portion was not tender enough and I still felt like eating fat, not the kind it would dissolve in the mouth. The service was good and attentive overall. My major issue is the noise. The tables were so close to each other and they were all the big table. It was so hard to have a conversation and we were yelling throughout the dinner. I would definitely not go again over the weekend unless they make more spaces among tables. Will check out over the weekdays to see if it is still that packed.

I won’t come here again. Foods, services, atmosphere, etc what I paid not expected. I left sadly.
Waiter pretends to not see you when you raise your hand to get their attention. They forgot to put the actual sauce that goes with the food. Everything else is OK. I would recommend people to come and eat but make sure you get their attention first. For the price, it is not worth it. The food is not great so don't waste your time going here to pay more than you have to.
Not very good dim sum - the skin is really thick on the dumplings, things are oily, and the selection is not very good. The floor was really dirty with lots of food and crumpled napkins. Cheap, but you get what you pay for - I'd go elsewhere and wouldn't recommend this place.
Made a reservation for 7:30 pm on the day before for a party of 8 at the Millbrae restaurant. Got to the restaurant few minutes before on Saturday. They apparently had a number of 7:30 reservations. We had people from age of 9 to 83. The restaurant didn't seem to care. We got our table at 8:30 pm. It's not well managed. The food was OK. They should treat their customers better.
This was my first time having dim sum, and not everything I tried was my cup of tea, but overall, the food was pretty good. The problems for me were more around the service. I don’t know if it was because we were the only white people there, or if they just aren’t friendly to their customers and that’s normal? It did feel a little like we got a little worse service than all the other Asian folks that were there. It was challenging to get someone to come over to our table to order, get boxes, and get the check. Although, the food was good, I’m not sure if I’d go back, personally.

After our first 4 dishes came the other 2 took over 40 minutes. We asked to cancel them and they said no since they were almost out. They didn't come for another 10+ minutes.
What an absolute joke of a restaurant. My family were waiting for an hour for a table and had a number, after our number was called a different family that recently walked in and DID NOT HAVE A NUMBER decided to lie and take our table. We complained and even showed our number. Management decided not to kick the family that took our table. When confronting the family, they had a smug smile knowing full knowledge on what they did. The restaurant told us to wait even longer. We left and do not plan to comeback.
Poor service. Waiter dropped off some soup and didn’t even serve it. Just dropped off the pot. They didn’t even give us soup spoons. Are we supposed to eat with our hands? Waited over an hour and didn’t get all of our food. Pretty sure they forgot about us. First to come and last to leave. Very unacceptable.
This is the worst business ever. They have no care for service or the quality of food. Our order was 40 minutes late and the food was abysmal with mostly onion fillers for meat dishes. The worst Chinese food I have ever had. Go there if you aren’t worried about the hygiene issues or good food.
I ordered E3-Shrimp Chive Dumplings and waited for 27 minutes for them to prepare . I checked my order and found out they gave me E1 - Fried Shrimp balls. You got the wrong order. It is okay, gave them back and I waited for another 20 minutes, please make me the Shrimp Chive Dumplings. Found out they gave me A-19 steamed chive dumplings. No! I don’t want any of these. All I want is E3 shrimp chive dumplings. If they don’t have E3 at that time , just tell me. I can just leave and find another’s restaurant. No, they tried to get my money and made me wait for something I don’t want to eat. Wasted my time 40-45 minutes and my money. No business with this restaurant.
I really like eating dim sum! since eating dimsum at New Asian restaurant! Now I really hate eating dim sum! Maybe it will take a long time before I dare to eat again!
Bad service. And wait an hour for this fish, and it isn’t taste good. After we tried paying,10 minutes later the lady said their card machine is not working, and asked us to pay cash. It’s $140+! Who carries that much cash! Luckily we have some cash. The old lady was standing there watching us while we were trying to figure out how much tip to give. This lady was asking for 20% tips. Four of us will never come back.
