Charles Dickens Tavern Murcia Reviews
I have just visited the Charles Dickens after a long time and was welcomed back warmly. Luke and Roy gave me exceptional service at the bar. I had a very nice meal as well. I highly recommend the Charles Dickens, great pub, great atmosphere, great partitions.
The Charles Dickens Tavern is somewhat of a hidden gem, with the entrance being off the main drag and the venue itself being squirreled away underground. As the name might imply, the stepping into the Charles Dickens Tavern is like taking a step back in time. Rich wood paneling and soft lighting create a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the bar staff are very friendly. Make sure you try a glass of the house lager!
Fantastic British pub in Melbourne. Food was Incredible - Beer amazing. Loved it.
Great traditional style pub. Food was good with big portion sizes and good selection of beer
This place is down stairs and was amazing, great English style pub, great food and atmosphere, nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
I had such a fun time in this iconic pub in the heart of Melbourne. Great warm friendly atmosphere. I had a Hawkers lager draught, it was delicious! For a relaxed ambient time and drinks, I highly recommend this bar.
Great Pub, friendly service, good food and great atmosphere
Absolutely lovely staff, great food, great atmosphere and prices are very reasonable. Love the cosy feel of the joint. Will continue to show patronage!¡!
Brilliant British style pub, built below an arcade. Great atmosphere mainly because of all the British And Australian rugby supporters in the pub. We only had some chips from the food menu as a snack with our beer and wine. Staff very attentive, polite and welcoming. Service also very quick considering how busy it was. Totally recommend it.
Awesome place. Does what it says on the tin. Good English grub, Rugby or football on the big screen depending on which staff member you get. Even caters to the @EdmontonOilers fans who have made it their home base. AFL is not the priority, loads of well kept beers from England like Theakstons or Tetley's, as well as the the Irish favourites. Great for an afternoon sesh.
Had a great evening, lots of ambience, lots of Dickens memorabilia, I’m English so felt very much at home. We had Steak, a Schnitzel and a bangers and mash, very tasty, and I’m definitely heading back for the Ploughmans! They also have a little book exchange set up, so next visit will be taking a couple of books. Very highly recommend a visit-the Staff were great and very friendly
Visited in the evening on the weekend. Pretty busy place. Perfect atmosphere of pub. Ordered grilled chicken burger. Good amount of chips. But I would like to have a slice of cheese on it or may be a bit more of sause. My partner ordered fish and chips with tartare sauce included and it was very nice. So u would give 4.5 for food if it would be possible here.
Nestled amidst the hustle and bustle of Melbourne lies a charming oasis of tranquility and warmth - The Charles Dickens Tavern. This cozy pub has become a beloved retreat for my wife and me, offering a sanctuary away from the city's frenetic pace while still being conveniently located in its heart. From the moment you step through the door, you're enveloped in an atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era. The rustic decor, adorned with nods to the legendary author Charles Dickens, exudes an old-world charm that instantly transports you to a simpler time. Whether seated at a cozy booth or perched on a stool at the bar, every corner of this tavern feels like a welcoming embrace. What truly sets The Charles Dickens Tavern apart, however, is its ambiance. Unlike many bustling pubs in the city, this hidden gem strikes the perfect balance between liveliness and intimacy. The soft murmur of conversations mingles with the gentle clinking of glasses, creating a soundtrack that enhances rather than overwhelms. It's the ideal setting for a romantic date night, where meaningful conversations can flow uninterrupted.Of course, no review would be complete without mentioning the food and drink. The menu boasts an array of hearty pub classics and gourmet delights, all expertly crafted using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From mouthwatering burgers to savory pies, every dish is a testament to the tavern's commitment to quality. In conclusion, The Charles Dickens Tavern is a true gem in the heart of Melbourne. Whether you're seeking a cozy spot for a romantic evening or simply looking to unwind with friends over a pint, this charming pub never fails to delight. It's a place where time seems to stand still, allowing you to savor the simple pleasures of good company and great food in an atmosphere of unparalleled warmth and hospitality.
Most authentic British pub I've ever been to!, plenty of British beers on trap, and the food is so British too. You'd swear you were actually in England! Loved how it is below street level down a winding staircase, plenty of tables for dining. Wife had the scotch fillet and it was so tender and cooked perfect. I has the Keema pie which was great too. Definitely a highlight of our trip.
This is a traditional British pub carpet and all! They have the most amazing Scotch eggs and a wide range of traditional ales. One of the only.pubs around showing all sport all the time. Great array of traditional English food. Friendly staff. Do yourself a favour and get a Scotch Egg.
A great traditional English style pub. The decor was lovely and the choice of beers were on point. Big screens to watch sport were great. The food was good. Ordered the special scotch egg which was perfect and the butter chicken which was okay and the fish supper which was nice. Some cool Charles Dickens inspired decor. Would definitely go back
I come here a lot and as a regular it's always a pleasure. They do the best Sunday roast lunch ever, although their entire menu is awwsome! And the Dickens lager is a great flavour....goes down well! Highly recommended...
We wanted a casual meal and decided on Pub food. Wow this Pub is an excellent mix of high quality food in a casual atmosphere.
Great little tavern hidden under the streets of Melbourne. Just happened upon the sign out the front and gave it a go; definitely recommend! Beef & guiness pie was delicious, so was the corned beef. Good atmosphere with a quiter end or a noisier end with TV's around and the footy on. Will be back.
Didn't eat, but the pints went down the hatch well. Average for the price in the city, however a great atmosphere.
I was looking for a pub while waiting for my wife and found this place using Google. Walked downstairs and went thru the door. The first impression of this pub was pretty cool and reminds me of pubs in the UK. They serve Guinness on the tap, and service was spot on. This place was packed with customers of young and old. Everyone seems to be happy, enjoying their drinks and watching the footy on TV. I will definitely be back to try their food menu as it looks very interesting.
We first came here as an alternative since another restaurant seemed to have forgotten that it was a Bank Holiday and although they accepted our reservation, when we turned up it was closed!(Sherlock Holmes… wast of time) Anyway, this turned out to be really fortunate - we were in the mood for pie and chips and The Charles Dickens Tavern delivered! Normally served with mash, the steak and Guinness pie was delicious and the staff gladly swapped out for chips. The pies were chock full of steak. Being from the UK (North) I might have preferred mushy peas but the sweet peas really went better with such a rich gravy. They also had vinegar and ketchup. Wide selection of wines and beers and great vibe - highly recommended.
Went for the sunday British roast and a chips with curry sauce. Food is always great. Lots of sport playing. Recommend booking a table, it gets busy. Staff are wonderful and they pour a Guinness properly.
We stopped here for a quick drink and a snack. Pretty busyl but we still managed to find a table for the 2 of us. Might have been harder for a bigger group. Even with 5 people in front of me to order, it took less than 5 minutes and after I ordered and told them the table number we were at, the drinks were at the table while I was sitting. Very quick service. We also got fries with gravy for a snack. The gravy was ok but the fries were great and fresh. Not the frozen overcooked ones you might get at a bar in the US. When you go, just have someone from your party sit at a table and order for them. Just remember your table number before you go up to order ;)
I was searching for an Irish pub when The Charles Dickens popped up. After reading the food reviews, I decided that this was the pub to visit for lunch. Well, I certainly made the right choice, the real ale and food were excellent. It had the character of an old British pub, something which we miss in Perth, Western Australia. I was sad to have missed the Theakston's Old Peculiar, however, The Hobgoblin Ruby ale was great! We even went back for lunch there again on our last day in Melbourne. Don’t pass this one by.
Discovered this quaint, hidden basement gem, quite by chance. This classy tribute to a typical British pub has 2 entrances- 1 on Collins St and 1 thru a back corridor and down stairs( very secret squirrel)in the Block arcade. Lots of classic English pub fare on the menu. My mum enjoyed the corned beef and I got a grilled chicken burger. All the food was simple but tasty. Loved the quaint decor in Pickwick's dining area, lots of nods to Dickens' literature and characters.
The steak and Guinness pie was delicious and VERY filling and the squid main was also delicious. Friendly wait staff and a cosy vibe. Have walked past the sign for years and glad I finally took the stairs down.
Stop scrolling and start making your way here. Initially apprehensive I myself read the reviews of this place. So close to my hotel and after an entire week in Melbourne I hadn't yet found this until google maps showed me this hidden gem. I got the Sunday roast, which isn't something I normally would ever get and to my surprise the pork, potato and gravy is some of the best I have ever eaten. Great staff, very friendly helpful and attentive, food didn't take long to come and great selection of drinks if you like. Couldn't recommend this establishment enough. Keep up the good work
It's great, its food, the place, the service, the truth is I never thought that there would be such incredible places, I was having fun with my friends for a long time and we shared very happy. I invite you to visit it since its decoration takes you back to that urban history.
A great surprise to discover an underground pub I’ve walked past dozens of times without noticing. Our group of 14 was served quickly, and everyone loved their meals — from steak and parma to calamari and fries, sandwiches, and burgers. The atmosphere was lively but not too loud for a team lunch, though it may vary at other times. Really impressed and would highly recommend!
Top Sunday Roast in Melbourne! Roast pork belly and porchetta roast are at its perfect! All element were in spot, crispy crackling, soft and melted pork belly, tender and juicy meats. Best Yorkshire pudding as it’s not oily but eggy fragrant when it’s served. But among all of the best are the gravy, it’s mind blowing! Perfectly seasoned, and it’s naturally thicken by the collagen itself and taste lightly Guinness in the gravy, it’s just top! Roast veggies are perfectly cooked as well as their crispy roast potatoes. What a banger! 💯💯💯
I went in to kill some time while my wife was busy. I was pleasantly surprised to find live rugby on the big screen. Later when I asked for the T20 cricket to be played they put it on another TV for me. Very accomodating with good service. We only ate some fries so I can't really comment on food.
Absolutely incredible place, made me feel like I was back at home in England. Decorations were relevant and homely, food is incredible. I had the chicken schnitzel, perfectly cooked. Lovely pint of GUINESS and perfectly poured. Live sport is always an added bonus which range from premier league football matches to NBA games. 10/10 would 1000% come back!
You could write a novel about the food Our table had a mixture of dishes and all of them were exceptional ! Fish was cooked beautifully, hamburgers had lots of taste, lamb kofta delicious and the roast with Yorkshire pudding was to die for Staff, we’re friendly with drinks and meals coming out quickly and prices are reasonable There is a lift available if you can’t navigate stairs, this venue is definitely worth a drop in
A classic underground pub in the CBD, possibly only matched by the Sherlock Holmes nearby. I'd you're British this is a great spot, a home away from home. If, like myself, you enjoy British beers, the range on tap is pretty enjoyable. Typical pub grub options with some British flair.
🇬🇧 A TRUE TASTE OF ENGLAND… IN MELBOURNE 🇬🇧 Hidden beneath the city streets is The Charles Dickens Tavern - an underground English pub that absolutely delivered the goods — good food, great drinks, and even better vibes. We wandered in on game day with the place packed wall-to-wall with Edmonton Oilers fans (seriously, every second person in a jersey), and the energy was electric. I ordered the Fish Finger Sandwiches, expecting a nostalgic little snack — what arrived looked more like fish burgers on steroids, and honestly… divine. I barely got a pic before half the fish fell out of the bun mid-shot 😂 Gary went full Brit with bangers and mash (his standard go-to), and Tom tackled the chicken schnitzel — which was massive and gone in minutes. The drinks? Exceptional. The crowd? Rowdy in the best way. The food? Absolutely nailed it. Massive shoutout to Tom for the recommendation — and next time, I’m definitely bringing the camera.
Amazing basement pub and absolutely delicious food with lovely staff! I had the parma but asked for no ham, and they were perfectly fine with that, super accommodating and friendly. There were TVs showcasing both AFL and Soccer, which added to the lively vibe. The overall atmosphere had a classic English/Scottish/Irish pub feel, which was super awesome and made the whole experience even better. Definitely a place worth coming back to!
This is my favourite pub in Australia! The Scotch Egg is ridiculously good and quite possibly the best in the World!! The Hobgoblin beer is amazing and even better than my old favourite Old Speckled Hen which they also have to do your own comparison. Staff are super friendly and lots of lovely old school pub charm.

Warm cosy pub with a great atmosphere.. Staff all really friendly.Delicious meals… cheese , onion & potato pie was so good.
Great little pub that's underground. Kilkenny and Guinness on tap. Can be a little bit noisy during peak times but if that's outmosphere you like you'll love it.
The beers on tap are excellent, and the food is top quality. It can get very crowded and noisy, but outside peak times is great for a quiet drink.
This pub is located in the basement of the building and has a cosy vibe. The staff were friendly and helpful with beer recommendations. There was clear signage at the front instructing guests to place their order at the bar and pay first. I ordered the steak and Guinness pie. It arrived piping hot and smothered in gravy. The meat was a little dry, but overall all it was a solid meal. I found it a bit loud, but that is just the style of the place. If you are looking for a quiet place to chat, this isn't it. In general, I think the friendly staff are the highlight of this place.
Nice tavern/pub in the heart of CBD, with good food and a nice selection of beers and other drinks. I ordered a steak, medium and not medium-rare, and got the medium-rare one. However, most places I have been to have difficulties with this. We would still go again, as we liked the atmosphere.
Place is very cosy, in the busier times can get raukus, staff are friendly and helpful. Food and drinks are priced in line with most bars and have a good selection.
Great British pub, nice size meals at reasonable prices. $9 fir a pint is great value and tasted good. Good menu choices, full of British classics and good menu choice for kids. Steak sandwich was very good, kids had chips and gravy which was ampl and chicken parmy was good, moist chicken with crispy outside. Awesome service. Great place to visit.
True English pub immersion with decor, dei is and atmosphere. Slightly let down but the food: bar snacks are not English, ratio gravy mash potatoes is off, peas in fish and chips are not mushy peas, no option for vinegar with chips, and corned beef is OZ version, not UK.
English style pub with pleasant atmosphere and English ales. Good solid pub food and friendly service.
How have I not been to the Charles Dickens Tavern? This was recommended my my fave nephew (only nephew heh heh) - and it was just a chance to catch up with him and a mate - and I thought it all jolly good. It was a THU night, but it was pretty busy with the after work punters - many a group table there too and many ther eto watch the footy. It had a pretty good vibe. Service was pretty quick with the meals, but being busy it took a tad longer to get a beer, but they were always friendly. I had the burger, whicch was pretty good (the burger itself lacke a little favour) but overall, it still rates. Fave nephew went with some chicken wings and they too were quite nice. Prices were reasonable too. I mention as most places seem to be crazy expensive in Melbs these days- but the CDT quite decent. Anyhoo, great wee pub in a great location. Zippy spam inclued: Had to abandon me little mat ein his igloo this night (he wasn't happy)
One of my favourite British pubs in Melbourne! Tucked away in The Block Arcade, it can get quite busy on weekends. We called them for a last-minute booking for dinner, and John was kind enough to accommodate us and book us a table! We ordered the following dishes: - Beef & Guinness Pie - Guinness braised beef in a rich gravy under a puff pastry lid with creamy mash & buttered peas. -Vegetable Lasagne - zucchini, eggplant, capsicum and red onion cooked in a rich tomato sauce, topped with béchamel & cheese, served with garlic bread. Both were well cooked, the meat in the pie was juicy & tender. The veggies in the lasagna had the perfect flavour and did not feel bland at all! They have a lot of choices of beer on tap, so we ordered the Hobgoblin (red ale, 5.2%) and Stowford Press Cider (4.5%). Friendly service, great food, and excellent drinks. They show all sports games & a proud Manchester United support club as they have dedicated a whole wall just for the club. Love the place and will come back to try more food items from their menu.
Had to come here in my quest for visiting English / Irish pubs in the city and yes Charles Dickens was ok, glad I came. We had drinks (Proseccos and red wines) and we shared cheesy garlic bread, then husband had fish supper (yes just fish n chips with little serving of peas) while I had cheese and onion pie. Food was fine, but I do like all the English Pub touches, cute without being too kitsch. Would come again but as so many places to try may not get back for awhile! Note all tables reserved for tonight as English soccer team going for gold.
Nice bar, good selection of drinks, nice staff. It being down underground is cool because you don't realise your in the middle of the city cause it's so quiet and relaxed. The day we went it was anyways. Bathroom was really clean and well kept which is rare in Melbourne city. I had a lovely glass of wine and my husband enjoyed a beer.
First time having proper curry sauce outside of England and I've missed it! As a Leeds girl it was great to have a proper pint of Tetleys and watch the rugby. Great relaxed atmosphere and selection of beers and ciders. Can't wait to go again!
Excelente!!! Imperdible.. en un sub suelo. Toda la honda. Como si fuera en la ley seca .. recomendable
Me gustó, muy buena comida y cerveza 🍻
Good pub. Hidden away in the Block Arcade. Food was decent. We had a chicken curry and mushroom pate. Food was nice and filling. Good value.
Charles Dickens Tavern – A Hidden Gem for Sports Fans An underground sports bar that’s perfect for catching a good footy game, especially AFL. The atmosphere is lively, with passionate fans adding to the experience. It has a classic British pub vibe with a solid selection of beers — especially great if you’re into Irish brews. The draft options are excellent, and the $9 pints and $4.50–$6 schooners make it an affordable spot for a drink. Didn’t try much of the food — it seemed to be self-service — but there’s plenty of seating and it’s definitely a top pick for watching a game. Highly recommended.

Quite a quaint and cool looking place. Atmosphere was good. No one who had steak finished them. Tough as old boot leather.
Came in for a Sunday Roast which was lamb today. On arrival nothing from bar staff at all, not even acknowledgment of us arriving, Just stares until we spoke first. Lamb roast was very disappointing as it was obviously cooked some time ago and char grilled to heat it up again. The char flavour over powered the lamb totally. This place has the look of an old English pub and that's where it stops. Staff need to be proud of where they work. Maybe staff should understand what an English pub and food is really about.
Visited here before for drinks, and it had a nice traditional pub atmosphere, so thought we'd come back with some friends to try out the food. It was a Saturday night (around 6:30) and was still quite quiet, however it was picking up around 8:00pm as people arrived for the footy. We ordered a couple of Beef and Guinness Pies, the Dickens Burger, a Scotch Egg and some Chips and curry sauce. The Pie was ok, but did not compare to another similar one in a venue not too far away. I was advised the burger was tasty enough. The scotch egg was a tad pink on the inside, and the meat was quite dry, and definitely not seasoned enough. The chips were hit and miss - when the first plate came out (the burger), the chips looked golden and crispy (and they were) - when the next two portions came out, they were pale and soggy which was a huge disappointment. The curry sauce was ok but had quite a dominating fruity flavour, so not our cup of tea. Staff were friendly on both occasions, so will definitely go back for drinks, but would skip the food next time, as there's definitely better quality pub food in the vicinity for the price.
Basement beer hall. Fake English/Victorian style. Good beer selection. Crowds and noise. Food wise, the Scotch Egg & the Corn Beef were good, the burger poor and no desserts on the menu. Not gre…
$9 for a pint of coke! Need a say more! Cannot be serious, this is disgraceful. Been coming to this pub for many years, but can no longer recommend due to the price of soft drink.

$9 for a pint of soft drink. How can that be acceptable in this day and age!! A Dickens beer is $9 for a pint. So how can they justify a soft drink to cost the same price. Where have the days gone that those that may need to drive are looked after!!!! Sickening injustice!!
Yeah me and my mate came here for a pint on his 18th birthday about two weeks ago. The guy behind the counter was just really unfriendly when checking our I.D's and gave the impression he wanted to kick us to the curb even though we had done nothing wrong. Pretty much threw off the atmosphere in the pub. Won't be coming back
