Dining at Gandhi Cafe today for lunch with a friend was a pure delight. The owner's warmth and charm, the absolutely delicious food (including free extras we didn't even request), the wonderful local vibe, and the much-appreciated super-low price all added up to my simply having to write this review! Try it; you'll love it!

Delicious Indian food. Best I've had in the neighborhood. The staff is so lovely and engaging. We love it here!!!! (Also—they have amazing desserts.)

The man running this place is lovely. I stopped in the other day asking for a mango lassi to go, and I don’t think they typically do that. But he was really nice about it and the lassi was fresh and tasted homemade. I made sure to come back for dinner later in the week. Their food is great, everything is clean, the place is cute and cozy, and service is so friendly. I’m looking forward to coming back.

The go-to spot for Indian food. Some of the best items are the Samosa Chaat, the lamb specials, and the garlic naan (if you love Garlic!). The appetizer + dessert that come with the set meals can not be beat in NYC. It is hard to find a place in NYC that offers this at a reasonable cost; Gandhi Cafe threads that needle well. Service is kind and attentive. The music playing in the background is lovely.

We had the lunch specials (dhansak and saag paneer) which came with a pakora + soup app, rice, one naan, and a small mango rice pudding dessert. Service was excellent and it looks like a sweet family-run type restaurant. Def worth a visit!

In my third decade now of patronizing this West Village—nay—NATIONAL treasure of an eatery. 21 years after I first popped in for the $8 three course lunch special, the food is still delicious and nuanced, the service incredibly loving, the ambiance honey—and the lunch special is still under $10. I can't make it make sense against inflation, but I'm not complaining. Might write a poem about this place.

Gandi cafe has been my gf favorite Indian restaurant. She would be always dying to have the butter chicken there and the papadam with the chutneys. I seen her devore the whole plate 😂 but its really good overall the mango lassi too omg so rich and smooth! The prices too are very reasonable which is amazing! At the end the staff will give u a plate of payesh (rice pudding) and a mix of sweet and cumin to help digestion after your meal along side toothpicks to really get in there lol 😂. The owner was super friendly always says thank you and remembers you everytime u came! He added whipped cream to our mango lassi because last time I asked if there was any whipped cream he could add and he somehow remember from our last encounter 🥹! Overall the vibes, the food, the retro cart style is all amazing and great! Can't wait to be back again and try new items!

The perfect place for some comfort Indian food! The service is great and the restaurant owner is the sweetest man. He makes sure everyone is taken care of and goes out of his way to ensure guests are enjoying the food. The food is amazing too! Presentation is great. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Excellent little find. The food was delicious and the lunch special was very reasonable. For $9 you get a small appetizer soup combo, entrée, side of Nan, and a small dessert, perfect portion. Service was friendly. Second time was just as good. This place should be packed at lunchtime. Every visit is consistently good.

I wrote this while feeling a bit tipsy, but I believe it's still true from the bottom of my heart. I grabbed a seat just for myself, enjoying my own company, and watched the people around me—groups of friends, new lovers getting to know each other. Everyone seemed to be having a great time, savoring both the food and the atmosphere. The flavors were rich, and the naan was unforgettable—the smell of the flour, with a satisfying crisp on both the top and bottom. The lamb masala was perfect for someone like me, who can’t handle too much spice. Its sweet, creamy profile paired wonderfully with the rice and naan. I truly appreciate this restaurant, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

Best Indian food ever, it's my new favorite restaurant in NYC. I'd order from here every week if I lived here. Quiet hole in the wall, but the server was so sweet. Great speedy service, highly recommend the vegetable Thaly curry assortment.

Best Food for Dollar in the Village. Living in the village it's hard to find good meals that aren't crazy expensive. This place gives you great tasting good for a great price. The atmosphere is classic also, highly recommend. Left full and happy. They have multiple full meal lunch specials for under $10. And for anyone who hasn't ordered Indian before, get chicken Tikka Masala. It's basically chicken in a delicious cream sauce with bread and rice.

Not so conventional Halal Indian restaurant, offering unique dishes with some twist. Tried their salmon pakoras, lamb coconut kurma, lobster curry. Sorry to say, not my cup of tea, and didn’t enjoy that much. Nevertheless, good experience.

Went for late lunch close to 3pm on a weekday, restaurant was nearly empty. Ordered two lunch sets - the lamb kurma and chicken tikka (came in sizzling hot plate) which came with naan and rice to go with the curries. Lunch set came with onion Bhaji for starter and a mango rice dessert. Food was flavorful and I especially liked the naan which had a strong ghee flavor with nice crisp and chewiness to the bread. The decor of the restaurant could be improved as the lighting was quite dark, but the food is good and value for money. We paid $25 for the food (2 lunch sets) including tip. The city has good food for value places if you know where to look - this is one of them!

Service was slow, but food was fresh and flavorful. We had the mulligatawny soup which was fantastic, and the vegetable korma was creamy and filling. Fairly small space with a few tables outdoor too - my one complaint was the lack of air-conditioning during a hot summer afternoon.

Starting with good stuff - staff was great! Ambience was good too! Priced right considering the neighborhood Coming to food - - Tasteless food, seemed more experimental food - Difficult to find the eggplant in pakora (thick layer of gram flour) - Service was very slow and took ages to get the main course after appetizers.

Not sure what happened to this place. I noticed they renovated the inside when I picked up my food but the Tandoori chicken has gone straight to hell. Its basically rotisserie chicken covered it in a disgusting katsup like sauce now. It was so gross. The saffron rice was also bad.
